Chapter 5: Home

After a long hug, Harry and Sirius collapsed onto the sofa next to each other. Harry realised that he had some questions. "Sirius?" asked harry. "Yeah?" "Why didn't you come for me before?" "Well," said Sirius, "when your parents first died you were safest at the Dursleys. Don't ask – it's complicated. I tried, but it was the safest place for you. But a very good friend of mine recently made this house as safe as the Dursleys ever was, so…." Harry smiled. "One more thing - what should I call you?" asked Harry. "Sirius," said Sirius. Harry nodded. "Now that's all done, how about a tour of the house?" asked Sirius.

Sirius led him next door to the kitchen. The kitchen was painted blue. It didn't have a microwave or an oven, Harry noticed. Then they went upstairs. First, they went into the bathroom. It was painted turquoise with a big bathtub. Next, they went into the guest room. Then they went into Sirius's room. There was a big picture of four teenage boys on one wall, one of which Harry recognised as Sirius. The other wall was covered in a red and gold banner with a lion in the centre. Finally, they went into Harry's room. Harry stared. It was amazing! It had blue wallpaper and there was a big stag on the duvet cover. He had a bedside table - where there was a photo of his parents. A bookshelf stood bursting with books. There was also a chest of drawers and a toy box. While Sirius made dinner, Harry explored his new room. First he looked at the bookshelf. He had 'The Wizard And The Hopping Pot', 'The Tale Of The Three Brothers', 'Babbitty Rabbitty And Her Cackling Stump', 'The Fountain of Fair Fortune', 'The Warlock's Hairy Heart', 'A Kid's Guide to Magical Creatures' and several picture books. When Harry opened the toy box, he was amazed. There was a rubber shark and dolphin for the bath, a box of blocks, a spinning-top-like-something which Harry later learned was a sneakoscope and a stuffed toy lion. Harry liked everything in his room. He especially liked the toys and the photograph on his bedside table. Harry unpacked his stuff. He put his pyjamas and jumper in the chest of drawers. He put his toothbrush in the bathroom and his soldiers in the toy box. Harry put his teddy in the bed. "Harry, time for dinner!" Sirius called up the stairs. Harry raced downstairs. He was hungry. Dinner was a hot dog and a glass of chocolate milk.

After dinner, Harry had his first ever bubble bath. He then got tucked into bed with his teddy. "Night night Sirius," said Harry, giving his godfather a hug. "Night night mini-marauder," said Sirius, grinning. Harry didn't know what that meant, but he liked it. "Did you brush your teeth?" asked Sirius. "Yes," Harry replied. Sirius looked at harry. For the first time, he seemed to notice Harry's baggy pajamas. "Harry, do those pajamas fit you?" asked Sirius looking thoughtful. "No. They were Dudley's," Harry replied. Sirius clenched his fists. "Those people...!" He said with gritted teeth. "Don't worry. We'll go shopping tomorrow." Sirius slipped out and closed the door.

Harry gave a contented sigh. He had never been this happy in his entire life. In fact, he had never been this comfortable in his life either. All day, everything had been happening so fast he hadn't even had chance to think. But now, he was alone with his thoughts. Suddenly, the full realisation hit him. Harry had left the Dursleys at last! He had a home! He had books and toys! He had a bedroom of his own! And most important of all, he had a family. He was a wizard. All those times at the Dursleys when he done something extraordinary, it had been magic.

Harry wondered if his room was magic too. He peered at the wallpaper. The blue paper was covered in little silver broomsticks. Harry gasped - they were zooming all over the wallpaper. Suddenly, Harry heard a sound from his toy box. It was his toy lion! It was moving around and roaring! In fact, Harry noticed something at that moment - all the toys, except the ones he had bought from the Dursleys, were magical. His blocks could change colour and his sneakoscope was spinning and glowing. The bath toys weren't doing anything, but Harry was sure they could do something cool. He smiled to himself as he fell into a deep happy sleep.

The next day, when Harry woke up, he thought for a moment he was in his cupboard. Surely his godfather and everything had been a great dream. It just couldn't be real. But then he opened his eyes and saw his room. Harry jumped out of bed in excitement. It had been real! Harry slipped down the stairs, hoping his godfather wouldn't mind.

"Good morning, mini-marauder," said Sirius. "Good morning, Sirius," said Harry. "What would you like for breakfast? I can make anything." Harry wasn't sure. He had never been allowed to have anything he liked. Did he want pancakes? Or maybe he would like waffles? Then Harry thought of something he definitely would like. "Can I please have a fry up?" asked Harry tentatively. At the Dursleys, Harry never got anything he asked for - whether it was a bar of chocolate or a book from the library. Harry remembered the time two years ago when he had been out shopping with Aunt Petunia. He had spotted some brightly coloured lollipops. They looked so pretty and so tasty. "Aunt Petunia?" said Harry. "What?!" she snapped. "Please may I have a lollipop?" Harry asked. Later that night, Harry had been deprived of supper. Just because he asked for a lollipop.

"Of course you can," said Sirius. In a few minutes, Harry found himself seated at the table with a plate full of sausages, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, eggs and hashbrowns. Harry had never had so much food on his plate at one time in his life! He tucked in with gusto. "How did you sleep last night?" said Sirius through a mouth full of food. "Wonderfully," said Harry. He had never slept better. "I slept well, but I think I must've turned the wrong way in the night because I ended up with my feet on my pillow and my head on the end of the bed." "I woke up like that too!" Sirius said grinning. Harry laughed. Sirius was so funny. They chatted on like this, until they had cleared their plates. They spoke about everything from dreams to pranks that Sirius had played. It seemed that they were going to like each other a lot.
