Bella

It wasn't until late afternoon that I heard the foot falls of the wolves approaching. I wasn't surprised to hear that Jacob hadn't come alone. I knew Billy would have told him that someone was here with me, and being that I couldn't go into detail over the phone, I'm sure Jacob drew his own conclusions as to who had come back to Forks.

Rosalie and Emmett waited inside while I met the Jacob on the front lawn. As he stepped through the trees Embry and Sam flanked him in wolf form. I nodded to them and Embry's head bobbed back.

"Hey Jake," I greeted, offering a half smile.

"Bella."

"I wanted to let you know that Emmett and Rosalie were here." He looked at me for a moment without saying anything. We hadn't talked through Alice and Jasper coming, and now there were other members of the Cullen family. This time ones who were here to stay. "I was wondering if the offer still stood to try and renegotiate the treaty."

Sam growled, and I heard Emmett get up from the sofa inside. Jacob lifted a hand briefly and Sam backed off.

He sighed and gave me a guilty half smile, "I gotta be honest with you, I'm really relieved it's not Edward." I returned his smile with one of my own.

"I think I can agree with you on that one." Sam huffed in annoyance and Jacob rolled his eyes.

"As far as the treaty goes, it would depend on the new terms." Jacob said, Sam growled again, but Embry seemed unfazed.

"We haven't exactly figured any of that out yet. Rosalie isn't comfortable setting new terms without say from Carlisle, as he's the one who made the treaty with your grandfather in the first place."

"Why are you asking if you don't even know if you can?" I was surprised to see how swiftly Jacob was handling this, especially considering all the other things that were going on.

"I asked them not to call yet. I wanted to see how you felt about it. I know things are already complicated and that we're in uncharted waters here because I'm so new. If you, the pack, or even the council don't think new terms can be negotiated I don't want to push it." I paused and looked between the three of them before my eyes landed back on Jacob. "I just wanted to try, because you're still my best friend Jake." His brows furrowed as he thought through what I'd said.

He let out a long breath. "I'll have to speak with the council, I know the treaty well but I'll want to go though everything again so I can see what we'd be willing to modify. We may need Carlisle present if he's the one we go will have final say on your end. Can that be done?"

Rosalie was in the doorway then, "I'm sure that wont be a problem if necessary. But if for some reason he's unable I will speak with him about me finalizing things as a representative of our family." Rosalie's tone was bitter but Jacob brushed it off. He'd barely looked at her while she spoke, and he nodded to me. Sam was grumbling, I knew he wouldn't be thrilled with renegotiating, I'd imagine Paul and members of the council may not be too keen either.

"Like I said, I'll need to speak with the others. I make no guarantees. Until then, we'll need to find another meeting ground. We're going against terms of the current treaty by being here."

"Search parties halt after today, right? We could meet at the meadow." I offered.

"If you're comfortable going back there." Worry edged into Jacob's voice.

"I'm fine with it, when should we plan to meet?" I asked, I heard Emmett and Rosalie whispering in the house.

Jacob ran his hand through his hair. "I'll call a meeting this evening, I should have insight tonight but since it's Charlie's last day to search I don't know how late he'll wait to call it. Day break tomorrow should give us time. That will also give you plenty of time to contact Carlisle."

"Thanks, Jake." I said with a sad smile. He nodded and turned to the trees. Sam's eyes lingered on me for a moment before he followed Jacob and Embry back to the reservation.

I went inside and found Rosalie and Emmett standing in the kitchen.

"That sounded promising." Emmett said, grinning.

"The next question is what do we ask to change?" I looked between him and Rosalie.

"Well, the treaty is pretty straightforward. One, we keep each other's secrets- I don't think that will need revising." She looked at me for confirmation and I nodded. "Two, we don't bite humans, whether to kill or change them."

"That also still seems fair, the grey area is that I have yet to come across a human. I don't know what they smell like therefore I don't know how much control I'll have when I do finally come across one." This was something I'd already talked with Jake about, it was still one of those we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, pieces.

"If we get this in writing, we could add a disclaimer that we will do our best to guide you through the vegetarian lifestyle and if there is an accidental slip up without malicious intent the treaty remains intact." Rosalie paused for a moment, and leaned toward me, "I want you to know now, that if you agree under our treaty this associates you with our family. Are you sure that's something you're okay with?"

I thought about it for a moment. I suppose even without the intent of going back to Edward it still felt right to consider myself their family. Rosalie and Emmett had been here less than a day and I already felt far more at ease. Regardless I needed to solidify a treaty in some way with the wolves in order to maintain peace with the others in the pack. Jacob may trust me, but I needed to set some groundwork to be accepted by the others, even if it turned out to be just for a short amount of time.

"Yes, I'm okay with that." I said.

"Right on." Emmett called. He had made his way to the living room and was lounging on the couch while Rosalie and I hashed things out.

"The last piece of the treaty I'd imagine is what you'd like to renegotiate, which would be the boundary lines." I nodded.

"I don't know that we should necessarily change the boundaries, I realize that the lines are in place to protect both parties." I pushed my fingers through my hair. "I don't know how to handle changing a treaty when all that needs to be discussed are technicalities. I mean, I want to be able to have Jake around, but this is also your property and like you said - your family values privacy."

"Maybe we could add something along the lines of; parties will maintain guidance of boundary lines with the exception of pre-discussed verbal invitations." I looked Rosalie over for a moment.

"You know, you're pretty good at this." I grinned.

"I went through law school once, some time ago." She rolled her eyes, "It didn't exactly suit me."

"Huh, I think you would have been a great lawyer." I raised my eyebrows at her.

"That was the problem." Emmett said, "She's too cut throat to be a lawyer." I snorted.

"I hope Jacob can convince the other's to hear us out, we really wouldn't be changing much." Rosalie looked down at the paper she'd been using to write down our proposal. I imagined it was more something we could show the pack. Vampire brains didn't seem to forget vampire experiences.

"Are you ready to call Carlisle?" I asked. Emmett sat up from the couch and Rosalie nodded.

She grabbed the phone and dialed a number as Emmett leaned against the counter next to me. After two rings Carlisle picked up.

"Rose." He said, relief evident in his voice.

"Hello, Carlisle." Rosalie smiled as she responded.

"How are you? Has Emmett found you yet?" Rosalie's eye brows knitted together and she looked to Emmett and then me.

"Hasn't Alice told you?" She asked. Carlisle was quiet for a moment.

"Alice hasn't said anything to us about either of you. Will you be home soon?" Rosalie paused for a minute.

"Actually, we're in Forks," her eyes still hadn't left me. "And I need to ask you a favor."

To superhuman eyes, it was well past daybreak and we were standing in the remains of Edward's meadow.

Carlisle had been more than willing to detail the treaty to make it work better for our circumstances. He had several questions regarding how things had changed since I'd been there, and Rosalie did her best to answer his questions. I could tell that he wanted to come this way and speak with Jacob himself, but he told us with the time frame and things being fragile in Denali at the moment, it was best that he stay put.

He had a few questions about me, but Rosalie's answers were short so he didn't press.

We'd brought the paper Rosalie had written with for reference, if Jacob wanted to bring it back to the council for review. I couldn't help but feel anxious for him to arrive. For someone who had all the time in the word, I wasn't interested in waiting to see how this would turn out.

After a while three sets of paws halted outside of view. This time, all of them shifted to human form before they continued to the clearing. After a minute, Jacob, Embry and Jared pushed through the foliage.

Together they walked to the center of the meadow and halted in front of us. Embry smiled and Jake looked between Emmett and Rosalie before his eyes landed on me.

"Sam and Paul don't want to hear anything about changing the treaty. Old Quil seems to be backing them on it." I could feel a sinking in my chest. "However they don't make the final calls, and I wanted to hear you out. So tell me what you got."

Embry and Jared shared a look, and a smirk tugged at Jake's lips. I could almost hear the grin on Emmett's face. Rosalie handed the paper to me and I stepped forward offering it to Jacob.

As he reached for it I started to explain. He looked over the paper, folded it up and handed it to Jared who tucked it into his pockets. "I don't see why that wouldn't work, all you're doing is covering bases." He looked between the three of us, I glanced at Jared who seemed surprised at how little we were asking. "As far as I'm concerned these are the guidelines we'll follow. Were you able to speak with Carlisle?"

Rosalie responded, "Yes, I spoke with him yesterday. He's unfortunately unavailable to come, but allowed me to speak for my family. So long as the tribe is in agreement, we will stand by the added terms of the treaty." Jacob's eyes narrowed at her for a moment as he seemed to decide something.

"Blondie has spoken," with a grin he looked to Jared. "As long as were all on the same page, I think we can bring this back to Sam and my dad." Jared nodded, he looked back at the three of us for a moment and then walked to the trees the way he'd came.

"Let me know when you're heading back Jake, I'll be on patrol." Embry said as he moved to follow Jared. Jacob just nodded.

We stood there for a moment as we waited for the two of them to leave.

"Was there something else?" I asked, Jacob sighed.

"Not when it comes to the treaty. I just wanted to keep you up to date about what's going on with Charlie and Renee." He looked between Rosalie and Emmett, but they didn't move so he continued. "As we talked about, Renee asked Charlie to stop looking as of yesterday. Renee is staying at one of the inn's in town and has talked to Charlie about having a service for you sometime in the next two weeks. She seems to want to get on with it, but I think she's pushing Charlie to much. He's still having a hard time coming to terms with things-" Jacob trailed off for a moment as he processed whatever response or lack there of he saw on my face.

I was distracted with the anomaly of what my mother was doing. I wasn't sure if this was Renee's way of grieving or if this had to do with her hatred of Forks. I didn't know how I expected her to take the news of my death, but fast tracking to a memorial service so she could get the hell out of town wasn't it.

Jacob watched me for another moment before he spoke again, "I was asked to help plan the service. And now that we've talked about modifying the treaty, I was wondering if I'd be able to stop by and get your input. I know it's kind of a weird thing to ask, but I thought maybe you would want some say in how the service went."

I thought about that for a moment. Did I want a say? Would it be weird to want to make suggestions for a memorial service for myself? I didn't know what I would want my service to look like, maybe something small and simple that would reflect my old life. But as I thought about it, an idea popped in my head.

"I think I'd like that." I told him, Jacob nodded. I could at least try to help Charlie get through his grief. Maybe I could write a speech with Jacob.

"So it's okay if I pop in here and there to talk about the service?"

"Yes, Jake. It's fine." Jacob nodded in the direction on Rosalie.

"I wasn't asking you." His eyes shifted to Rosalie and Emmett snorted.

"Yes, dog breath. You can pop in." Rosalie snipped.

"Great," he said, "Well I'll see you soon then, Bella."

"See you soon, Jake."

Jacob walked through the tree line and I turned to Rosalie and Emmett.

"You know, I'm not really ready to go spend another day at the house, and I'm thirsty again. Do you know any good places to go hunting?" I asked. Emmett grinned wide.

"Hell yeah!" He said, then he took off.

Emmett, Rosalie and I had ran east into the Olympic National Park. This was the farthest from Forks I'd gone since my transformation. Rosalie had instructed me not to breathe as we ran, in case we crossed any humans on our path.

We darted through the brush, up the mountain, and I couldn't help but relish in the feeling of being free. I enjoyed that I had a familiar place to go back to when I wasn't sure where to start in this new life. But it was euphoric to be wild. It made me understand the nomadic lives vampires like Laurent and James lead.

Emmett stopped suddenly and wheeled around.

"Do you smell that?" He asked, a sloppy smile plastered across his face. For the first time since we'd left the clearing I inhaled deep.

I recognized the scent of prey and my throat immediately began to burn. This was the most delicious blood had smelled since I transitioned and I momentarily panicked. Was this what human blood smelled like? I looked over at Rosalie with wide eyes. She gave me an encouraging smile.

"Predatory animals taste more like the real thing." She explained.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" Emmett goaded.

I closed my eyes and surrendered to my senses, and as soon as I located the lion I took off.

When Rosalie said they tasted better, she wasn't lying. The lion's blood was the sweetest and most satisfying blood I'd had yet. I tried to take my time and savor it, but the fire in my throat pulled mouthfuls at a time and it was over in seconds.

When I was done I found my way back to Emmett and Rosalie. Emmett had his arms crossed and was nodding at me, his eyebrows raised.

"A speed eater huh? Someday we ought to have a competition. I bet I'll wipe the floor with you." I raised an eyebrow at him.

"I'll take that bet," I smirked and Rosalie snorted, shaking her head.

We spent another couple hours going after smaller prey. Rosalie and Emmett hunted more out of courtesy than need, and Rosalie explained that after your first year as an immortal, you gain a better handle on the thirst and can go longer periods without feeding.

Once I was full, we began heading back to the house. None of us were in a rush to get back so when we finally reached the house it was evening.

Just as we were about to jump across the river at the back lawn, Rosalie stopped.

"Bella, hold your breath. Go back into the woods and stay out of sight." There was alarm in her quiet voice and I wanted to ask what was going on, but I did as she said and retreated.

I hid myself in a high tree branch several yards from the river as she and Emmett leapt across and disappeared to investigate the house.

A minute later Rosalie bound back over the river and stopped at the base of my tree. I stepped down, landing in front of her.

"What happened?" I asked.

"When you get back to the house I want you to prepare yourself, there was a human there. The scent isn't as strong as it would be if they were still here - but this will be your first time smelling a human without tainted blood." I looked at her, startled.

"Who? Why?" She just shook her head.

"Emmett is heading to boundary lines to see if he can find out more information from Jacob or a member of the pack. We checked everywhere, in and around the house and whoever it was has left. In the meantime, this may be a good opportunity for you to smell a human without posing a threat to them." I swallowed, and after a second I nodded. Rosalie nudged me toward the house and I walked forward and leapt over the river.

I held my breath until we got inside, and then I inhaled a quick, short breath.

The scent that filled my nose was far more delicious than I could bear. Even with my thirst quenched my throat burned hot at the scent. Saliva pooled in my mouth, and I fought against the urge to find whoever this was. I closed my eyes and pushed against the need. I forced myself to inhale again, and do what I could to ignore the pain. I tried to push past the taste of it on my tongue, and as I inhaled again, familiarity set in.

My eyes flung open in horror and Rosalie's expression was alert.

"It was my dad." I gasped. "Charlie was here."
