Chapter 6: Best Friends and Protoplasm

The humans and dog hide behind some bushes to see the demons dragging people into the previous attraction that Zarkos and Tuana were using earlier in the film.

"Okay, I'm calling for help," Mary Jane took out her phone.

"No. I got this. I got this," Daphne tried to reassure her.

"Calling for help in a situation like this is the smart decision. If this was any normal case that you guys deal with then I'd agree that you could handle it, but from what Rise has told us, this is new for you," Naoto disagreed with Daphne.

Suddenly, the entrance closed, making Daphne reconsider her earlier words. Mary Jane decided to call the coast guards anyway.

"Again, smart decision," Naoto nodded.

The scene switched to the Coast Guards who answered Mary Jane's call. She reported to them that their friends were kidnapped, not specifying that monsters had committed the deed.

"Why didn't she tell them, Big Bro?" Nanako asked.

"Afraid that they wouldn't believe her and wouldn't send help," He answered.

The coast guard replied that they had a unit in the vicinity that they could send over to them. When he hung up after telling her that the unit would meet them at the pier, he turned around to his colleague and smiled evilly. Turns out that the coast guards are also on the master mind's payroll.

"Even the coast guards!?" Chie gasped.

Yu clicked his tongue in annoyance. "Makes sense, if this has been a recurring problem then the coast guards would've gotten a report long before the gang ever showed up," He said.

"Whoever is truly behind these kidnappings of college students paid off the coast guards to keep quiet. Daphne and the others might be walking into a trap," Naoto speculated.

"Why is it that the law enforcement is always useless in these things?" Yosuke groaned. He turned to Naoto quickly. "No offense!"

"None taken."

The next morning the gang woke up on the beach, Scooby's sleep growling could be heard. Strangely enough there were also voices in the background.

"Wait, do you guys hear that?" Yukiko asked.

"I do, Yuki-chan, it's beary strange," Teddie nodded his head.

"Yeah, it sounds like people. But after what happened the previous night, you wouldn't expect there to be anyone around," Yu added.

Daphne woke up to see the hotel was put back together as if nothing had happened last night. "Something messed up is happening," She alerted the others.

"Huh!? How is the hotel put back together!? Those monsters completely tore it up!" Kanji exclaimed.

"It's like magic!" Nanako gasped.

"What? Is the Coast Guard here?" Shaggy asked, waking up. He and the others were now wide awake, shocked by the restored island. "Like, what happened to the shattered windows and busted walls?" Shaggy asked.

"Yo, Red! The ball!" A girl demanded, walking over to them.

"What the hell? Why are there so many people!?" Kanji yelled.

"It really is as if last night didn't happen at all!" Rise exclaimed.

Daphne picked up the volleyball and tossed it back to her. She then looked at her friends and insisted that they should go. The next thing they all see are all of the people who were taken last night having a beach party. Acting as if there wasn't a monster attack at all.

"Anyone else think this is strange?" Shaggy asked.

"Yes, we all think the same, Shaggy," Chie answered.

"Okay, we need to split up," Daphne instructed.

"Why?" Shaggy and Scooby asked.

"Yeah, I don't think splitting up is the best option in this case. You don't really know what's going on," Naoto disagreed with the idea.

"She's trying to fill that leadership role, attempting to emulate how Fred and Velma operate," Rise explained.

"We still need to find Fred and Velma," Daphne tells him.

"I'll go this way," Mary Jane points in a direction. Shaggy and Scooby attempt to go with her, but Daphne commands them to go into a different direction.

Scooby whimpers, but Daphne holds her ground firmly.

"Aw, Scooby…" Nanako's heart went out to the dog. She really wanted to give him a hug.

Daphne walks out the pool area, looking for clues. The singer sees her and rushes over to her. He starts singing and as he gets closer to her face his eyes turn green. Daphne was put on edge instantly and quickly walked away.

"What was that!?" Yosuke yelled. Everyone was surprised by the color change of his eyes.

"Is he possessed or something?" Chie asked.

"Possessed…" Naoto hummed.

Scooby sniffed the ground to look for clues, until he sniffed out someone familiar. "Fred!?"

"FRED!?" Everyone shouted, shocked.

"Yo, the beyotch was like, "What?" And I was like, "Later on!"" Fred was talking to someone.

"Uh…does Fred seem off to anyone or is that just me?" Kanji asked.

"Yeah, he seems a lot more laid back," Teddie answered.

"Not that you idiot! He meant about how Fred is speaking," Yosuke yelled at Teddie.

"He's talking like those teenagers in that training video back in the castle. But, why would he be doing that?" Yukiko reminds them.

"Maybe, he was brainwashed into speaking like them?" Chie suggested.

"That would mean everyone on the island was brainwashed in a single night. There has to be more to this," Naoto said.

"Fred!" Shaggy rushed over to him. Fred turned around to greet Shaggy and Scooby.

"What up, dog? And…dog," He looked down at Scooby.

"Keeping it real," Scooby held up a peace sign.

There was some giggling at Scooby's reply.

"Like, what happened last night?" Shaggy asked.

"We got beat like it was the lizz-nizz on Earth. You know what I'm saying, G?" Fred confused the two.

"I can barely keep up with social slang nowadays…old ones are even more confusing," Yukiko sighed.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound of glass shattering, with a loud roar following afterwards. Fred took off his glasses as Shaggy and Scooby turned in the direction of the sound.

"You hear that?" Shaggy asked. He and Scooby turned back around to see Fred and the other guests glaring at them. Fred and the guests opened their mouths and released the same green breath as the monsters from before.

The audience was shocked by the new development that has taken place.

"B-But that's the same as the monsters from last night! How is that possible!?" Chie asked.

"That means you were correct earlier, Chie-senpai," Naoto said.

"Right? About what?" The martial artist asked, confused.

"You asked whether or not the guy from earlier was possessed when his eyes turned green in front of Daphne. Since Fred and the other guests are releasing the same gas as those monsters there's only one conclusion to come to," She explained.

"Everyone who was kidnapped last night have all been possessed by the monsters that had taken them. The only question left is how or why," Yu finished her train of thought.

"AHHHHH!" Shaggy and Scooby screamed in terror and took off.

"Get the dog," Fred ordered.

"The dog? Why do they want Scooby?" Rise wondered.

Daphne exited the women's locker room only to be apprehended by Zarkos. He locked her down and grinned. "Damsel in distress!" He mocked her as he reached into her purse to take the Daemon Ritus.

"Daphne!" Rise yelled. The idol was angry at Zarkos for calling Daphne a 'damsel in distress', and now the fashionista was captured.

Shaggy and Scooby ran for their lives into an old shed. "Hurry, get the door!" Shaggy yelled. He and Scooby quickly shut the door and held it closed. The possessed Fred and others tried to break the door down. Fred's arm tore through the circular glass window on the door and tried to choke Shaggy.

"They ran straight into a dead end!" Yosuke pointed out.

"Now they have to fight their way through," Kanji hoped.

"Again! Not their thing!" Rise dashed his hopes.

"Why is Fred in a bad mood?" Scooby asked, scared.

"Yeah, he's in such a bad mood that he's trying to kill you," Naoto sweat dropped.

"He's not in a bad mood, Scoob. He's a monster!" Shaggy twisted Fred's arm to get out of the choke hold. The possessed humans continued to break the glass to reach the two chickens, Scooby turned around and smiled.

"Huh? What did he see?" Nanako asked.

Scooby tried to get Shaggy's attention. "Rhaggy, rikes!"

"I know, yikes!"

"No, bikes!" Scooby tore the tarp off to reveal two ATVs.

Kanji grinned in satisfaction, excited for what was about to happen next.

Fred's eyes widened in horror as Shaggy and Scooby crashed right through the doors on their ATVs.

"YAHOO!" Scooby howled.

"YAHOO!" Rise and Nanako joined him.

The two drove away until Mary Jane came running out of the bushes. "Rhaggy, look out!" Shaggy heard Scooby in time to spot his ATV before he could hit her.

"Thank goodness," Rise sighed in relief.

Mary Jane looked terrified. "I just saw my best friend Beth Ann. Something's wrong with her eyes."

"Like, hop on!" Shaggy told her. She hopped onto the back of his ATV just as the rest of the possessed guests finally caught up.

"Time to burn some rubber!" Chie yelled, also pumped.

Scooby took off first with Shaggy following behind him. One of the guys managed to grab a hold of the back of Shaggy's ATV. "Like, what a drag!"

"I get it!" Teddie laughed.

The guy attempted to climb onto the vehicle, but Shaggy drifted hard enough to knock him off. Mary Jane laughed the entire time, enjoying the blood pounding excitement. Scooby turned to them, his tongue hanging out of his mouth.

"Like, duck!"

A tree branch smacked Mary Jane in the face much to Scooby's concern.

"Oh no! Is she alright!?" Nanako asked, horrified.

However, that was the least of their worries when Mary Jane looked back at Scooby. Her eyes were dark green, and she glared at him, horrifying the poor dog.

"NO!" Rise cried, the plot twist catching them all off guard.

"But that doesn't make sense! When could she have been possessed!?" Yosuke asked.

"Maybe…when they had split off, she was caught off guard by someone," Yukiko guessed.

"But, how? How did they do it so quickly?" Yu wondered.

She stretched out her face like rubber before giggling cutely at the dog.

"If she wasn't a possessed monster, I would've found that giggle cute," Yosuke sighed.

The three came to a stop at the attraction entrance from before. Shaggy and Mary Jane hopped off of their ATV.

"Yes! Yes! Are you alright? You were great!" Shaggy exclaimed, hugging her.

Everyone felt uncomfortable watching the scene of affection, knowing that the person Shaggy was hugging wasn't actually Mary Jane.

"Come on, Scooby. You gotta tell him," Rise said.

Scooby came over and started barking loudly at Mary Jane, forcing her to get away from Shaggy.

"Scooby, what are you doing, man?" Shaggy asked.

"Rhaggy, Rary Jane is a ran in a rask!" Scooby exclaimed.

"Mary Jane is a man in a mask?" Shaggy repeated.

"Scooby…" Mary Jane tried to approach, but Scooby continued to growl at her.

"Dude! What are you doing, man!?" Shaggy defended her.

"W-What? Shaggy, listen to your best friend!" Rise yelled.

"He's trying to warn you about the wolf in sheep's clothing!" Chie yelled.

"Step off, Scoob!" Shaggy yelled at his dog.

Scooby got onto his hindlegs and growled at his best friend. "Rhaggy, you're whipped!"

"He is," Everyone sweat dropped.

"I'm whipped? Yeah? Why don't you say that to my face?" Shaggy challenged.

"Stop fighting! You have much bigger things to worry about!" Rise exclaimed.

"Okay, I will. Your mommy eats cat poop!" Scooby insulted.

Shaggy thrusted a finger into the dog's face. "No, Scooby-Doo, your mom eats cat poop!" The two of them start throwing their hands around, ready to box each other.

"Bring it. You want a piece of the Shagster?" Shaggy started pushing Scooby back. The dog growled as he hopped backwards. "Feel the pain, Scooby!"

"Okay!"

"This is so dumb! Shaggy just needs to listen!" Naoto growled.

"He's too caught up in love to even bother listening to his best friend," Kanji sighed.

"Why do they all keep fighting!? Just be friends!" Rise pleaded.

"Come on! Two shots! Two shots! Me and you, me and you again. I'll give you some right now, buddy!" Shaggy yelled. He swung his arm at Scooby, but before his fist could make contact, a hole opened up beneath Scooby.

"SCOOBY!"

Rise growled at the screen in frustration. "Get in that hole right now and save your best friend!" She yelled at Shaggy.

Shaggy dropped down and looked into the hole. "SCOOB!" He yelled, his voice echoing.

He gets up, all of his previous anger gone. "Scooby's been eaten, I gotta go save him! You stay here, I'll be right back!"

"No, Shaggy," Mary Jane's voice was suddenly very deep.

"HUH!?" Everyone blanched at the sudden tone shift.

"I mean, it's too dangerous," She tried to persuade him.

"I've got to. He's, like, my best pal," Shaggy told her.

Yosuke and Yu smirked, knowing that the two would do the same for each other no matter what.

Chie and Yukiko also smiled warmly at the scene, their minds flashing back to Yukiko's dungeon. Their friendship became unbreakable.

"Friends don't quit!" Shaggy dived down to hole to save his best pal.

"That's right, Friends stick together no matter what!" Rise exclaimed, proud of Shaggy.

Shaggy slid down the tunnel and fell into a sandy cave. "Scoob?"

"Where's Scooby?" Nanako asked, worried.

"I don't know, he couldn't have gotten far," Yukiko answered.

"Don't worry, Nana-chan, I'm sure Shaggy will find him," Teddie reassured her.

Shaggy got to his feet and scanned around the cave. "Scooby-Doo…where are you?"

Rise didn't freak out about it this time, considering she was worried about Scooby's wellbeing.

Shaggy walked down the cave tunnel and arrived at a ritual altar with a large green glow about it.

Everyone stared at the altar with amazement, the growing questions in their minds only increasing as they continued to watch.

Shaggy hesitated for a moment before walking into the altar, hoping to not get caught by anyone. The hipster arrived at the big glowing bowl in the middle and peered inside of it.

"What is that? It looks like water, but something completely different," Yukiko observed.

"Are those jellyfish?" Yu wondered, hoping for the camera to eventually zoom in.

"Shaggy! Shaggy!"

"Velma!?" Rise gasped, hearing the female detective's voice.

"Where is she? I don't see her anywhere," Teddie said.

Shaggy looked around trying to find Velma. He then looked down into the bowl, his eyes widened when he saw one of the little blue heads talking to him.

"Velma's a freaky head ghost!" Chie screamed.

Shaggy waved at it.

"Don't just wave at it!" Yosuke yelled.

Shaggy reached into the bowl and grabbed Velma's head. "Thanks, Shaggy. Boy, am I glad to see you. Let me go so I can return to my body. Then get out of here before they steal your protoplasm too," Velma informed him.

"Protoplasm?" Kanji tilted his head.

"Souls."

"What?" Everyone looked at Naoto.

"That's a pool of souls," She answered. Her words only increased the creepy atmosphere in the room.

He nodded his head and released her soul. "I always knew you were a hero, Shaggy!" Velma shouted before leaving.

Rise smiled at those words. During the whole film Velma always appreciated Shaggy and Scooby, even in the cartoons she holds the two in high regards. "A beautiful friendship," She said, giggly.

Velma's soul crashed right into her possessed body. "Jinkies!" Her body flopped onto the ground; a green light erupted from her chest. The monster that was inhibiting it was ejected out seconds later. It growled at the detective before wilts started popping up on its body. Until it exploded due to the sunlight. Velma could only stare in shock as she put her glasses back on.

"That's it! That's why they inhabit human bodies! They're weak to sunlight!" Naoto exclaimed.

"So, whoever's the mastermind behind this has been taking the bodies of college students and putting these demons in them. Though, the reason behind it is still unknown," Rise summarized.

"Shaggy!" Fred's head popped up next.

"Yes! Shaggy can save Fred next!" Rise cheered.

"Hey, buddy," Shaggy reached in and grabbed Fred's soul.

"Shaggy! Someone must've spiked my root beer last night. Talk me down, man." Fred panicked.

"Fred, you're a frigging protoplasmic head," Shaggy told him.

"I know," Fred tried not to cry.

"Aw, Fred," Chie felt bad for him.

"But I'm still the best-looking protoplasmic head here," Fred said, seriously.

"Okay, you know what…" Chie sighed.

Shaggy bopped his soul, sending Fred spiraling out of the cave. His head flew uncontrollably through the hotel, trying to get to his body.

"On your right. Your left. I'm coming, good-looking!" Fred's soul bounced off the door, failing to enter his own body. He bounced all over the hotel before flying off into a random direction.

Everyone laughed at Fred's failed attempt to enter his own body, wondering where his soul was possibly going to go.

Shaggy pulled up a random soul, the guy thanking Shaggy for helping him. "Sorry, I'm looking for my friends," Shaggy plunged the head back down.

"I don't feel bad for that guy," Yosuke said.

"Same. Shaggy's on a mission that will hopefully lead to all of them being freed later," Rise said.

Shaggy scanned the inside of the bowl before finally finding who he was looking for. He pulled his hand back up with Daphne's soul.

"Daphne!" Rise and Nanako cheered.

"Put me back, Shaggy. I'll figure a way out myself," Daphne said, stubbornly.

"Now is not the time to be stubborn," Naoto frowned.

"Like, how?" Shaggy asked.

"I don't know. I'll use my tongue as an oar and swim to the edge," Daphne replied.

"That's stupid! Accepting help doesn't make you weak," Kanji huffed.

"Sorry," Shaggy bobbed her head and sent her spiraling out of the cave. Now that he's gotten all of his friends, Shaggy looked over and saw the Daemon Ritus sitting on a pedestal.

"The Daemon Ritus!" Yukiko exclaimed.

"Shaggy just saved the days in more ways than one!" Rise grinned, proudly.
