Ram was outside in the small garden tending to the flowers to pass the time. Awaiting for Subaru to return home from work.
She couldn't help but stare at the blue flowers that were the exact color of her sister Rems' hair. Since spring was coming. Ram decided to go out and get some blue flowers to plant in the garden. Both Subaru and Ram saw this garden as Rems' memorial, since she too loved this garden.
In fact the garden was one of the only things Subaru didn't leave to rot. Even during his two years of isolation he still went out to tend to the flowers. Not being able to stand there and watch it rot.
While looking at the blue flowers. She couldn't help but think back on times with her beloved sister Rem. Ram really wished she could be there to meet her daughter. Even though it was likely neither Ram or Subaru would end up in a relationship if Rem or Emilia were to still be alive. Ram was still grateful for the child she was about to have, but still wished her sister could be there.
Ram felt sad thoughts about to cloud around her brain, until an idea came to her mind. An idea of what she should name her child.
Since she loved the name Rem so much. It was only fitting that she called her Rem. It sounded perfect. Ram would once more have someone she could call Rem on a day-to-day basis.
Ram already loved the name Rem. She decided she would discuss it with Subaru once he returned home from work.
It was growing late into the evening when Subaru finally showed up back home. Both Ram and Subaru proceeded to have dinner before calling it a day. Usually while Subaru was getting ready for bed, Ram would usually try to fall asleep before he could enter the bedroom.
But on this particular night. Subaru walked into the bedroom to find Ram laying there with her eyes open. This was out of the ordinary. Usually Ram would always be trying to fall asleep by the time Subaru walked in the bedroom. He knew that there had to be something on her mind.
"How come you're still up? Are you thinking of something Ram?" Subaru asked as he got into bed.
"Yes… I want to discuss something with you" Ram replied.
"Well what is it?"
Ram rolled over to look at Subaru. This to him was an indicator that the topic they were about to discuss was serious and important.
She hesitated a few seconds before finally speaking of what was on her mind. "Barusu, I just wanted you to know that I have a recommendation of what to name our child" Ram said.
Subaru didn't expect this conversation to come up so soon. He expected it to come up when their child was finally born. Which by now could be anyday.
"You do?"
"Yes, I do. I want to name her… Rem"
Subaru loved the idea of naming their child Rem. It was actually the name Subaru was also thinking of possibly naming her. He was glad to see Ram also wanted to name her Rem. This is one of the rare occurrences where Ram and himself were finally on the same page about something.
"Great idea, Ram. I like that name" Subaru said.
With Ram giving him a nod. They were both in agreement of naming their child Rem. It was only fitting, since their daughter would most likely grow up loving both Ram and Subaru just like her aunt.
With naming their daughter. Subaru felt he knew his child more than just their child growing in Ram. She had a gender and a name. Next would be her appearance.
"Well Ram, any day now" Subaru said.
"I know…" Ram replied in a nervous tone.
"Are you nervous Ram?" Subaru asked.
"Obviously Barusu, I'm about to give birth. It's going to hurt"
"It's not going to be that bad Ram"
Rams face scrunched up slightly. "And how would you know, Barusu? You're not a woman"
"I know, but… I've gotten kicked in my… Lets just say i've gotten kicked in an area that's pain could be comparable to giving birth" Subaru said.
"Well how bad did it hurt?"
Subarus face went blank as he recalled the horrible pain he felt that day. "... It's gonna suck Ram. The pain was unbearable. I nearly passed out"
Rams face became full of anxiety and wrapped her arms around her stomach thinking of the pain she was going to feel at any time. She was so scared she even shed a small tear that Subaru took notice too.
"Don't cry Ram. It's not going to be that bad. I was exaggerating, it didn't hurt that bad"
"Well it's a bad time for jokes, Barusu"
"Y-Yeah… You're right. I'm sorry. But seriously don't be scared. It's going to be worth it in the end"
"Barusu, I'm going to be in pain for hours. It could be up to an entire day that I'm in labor since it's my first time giving birth"
"Look on the positive side. You're going to be at home, in this bed most likely. And plus you will have me, so I can distract you and keep you company. You will also get to hold my hand the entire time"
Subaru then realized that Ram was pretty strong. Meaning he was going to be experiencing the pain of his bones breaking as Ram squeezed his hand into dust. The doctor would probably have two patients that day.
"Alright then Barusu. I'm going to sleep" Ram said as she rolled over and closed her eyes.
"Wait! I got one quick question that's been on my mind as of late"
Ram opened her eyes and rolled over to look back at Subaru. She could tell by the look on his face that he was actually going to ask a serious question for once. "Fine. Tell me what it is"
"When your water breaks, is our child at risk of drowning?" Subaru said in a serious tone. That almost carried the tone of concern.
Ram made a really weird face when she heard the question that unirocnalily came from Subarus mouth. She waited for him to laugh and say that he was joking. But he continued to look at her with a serious expression, awaiting her answer.
"Are you really that stupid?" Ram asked.
"What do you mean? I'm being serious. Is she actually at risk of drowning?"
Ram let out the biggest sigh Subaru had ever heard in his life. "No! What kind of question is that? She's attached to me Barusu, she will be just fine"
"Alright then, thank you for telling me that"
A couple seconds went by. Ram did not roll back over, nor did she close her eyes trying to fall back asleep. Instead she chose to lay there and continue to look at Subaru weirdly.
"Why are you looking at me like that?' Subaru asked.
"Because you are really stupid, like really stupid. That was a dumb thing to ask. This is exactly why I will be the one educating her when she gets older"
"Well I'm sorry I don't know anything about child birth"
"I'm just going to go to sleep, Barusu. You have given me enough of a headache" Ram said as she rolled back over and closed her eyes for the second time.
"You got a headache from answering a question of mine?"
Ram did not respond and continued to lay there with her eyes closed trying to get her way into dreamland. Subaru could only let out a small sigh as he also rolled over and darkened his vision with eyelids.
When the next morning finally came around. Subaru and Ram sat at the dinner table eating breakfast that Ram had prepared. Subarus attention was fixed out the window seeing the flowers start to blossom.
Spring had finally arrived. Subaru knew it was around the start of April. Since the snow commonly melted entirely nearing the end of March.
Despite living in a different world that used a slightly different calendar. Subaru still preferred the calendar from his original world, since it was easier to remember. Plus he preferred it for sentimental values.
After breakfast, it was time to head off to work. As of late, Subaru found his job to start getting unbelievably boring. Sitting there and doing papers was really starting to drain him. Everyday at work felt the same. He would sit there and do paperwork until it was time to go home.
All Subaru wanted to do all day was spend time with Ram. Before when he was by himself he actually enjoyed work, since it forced his mind off of his guilty and grieving conscience. But now that he had Ram, things were different. He finally had something to come home to.
The morning was spent wishing to be with Ram. Since it was spring and it was finally getting warmer outside they could have possibly gone to the park. They used to always go to the park before the winter came. During winter they would just stay at home near the fire. Ram also forced Subaru to bring in the other couch from the shed to put in the living room.
In fact, Ram had actually done a full reorganization of the living room. It no longer looked like Subarus decrepit makeshift bedroom. In other words. The living room looked just as it did while Rem was living with him. Returning to its neat and clean environment.
Subarus thoughts then drifted towards his daughter. He was very excited to finally see her for the first time. Also being curious as to what type of person she would grow up to be.
Would she grow up to be a cold hearted tsundere like Ram, or be cheerful and optimistic like Subaru? Only time would tell. Their daughter could possibly get a mix of both her mother and fathers personality traits.
Though while thinking happily about his future with Ram and their daughter. His attention started to shift to Rem. Subaru still felt distraught about her death. He knew Ram was definitely no different, in fact she probably had it worse.
Rem was Ram's beloved twin sister and she was dead, and it was partially Subarus fault. If he would have never ran off, Rem would probably still be here. Subaru just wanted to know how on earth Ram was able to forgive him for doing something so horrible.
An act as disgusting as this deserved the worst punishment imaginable. But instead of suffering in guilt and remorse. Subaru instead got the privilege of being able to live a happy life with Ram, even having a child with her.
Subaru had spent two years of his life suffering for what he did. But now his mood was finally changing. He was happy again, an emotion Subaru thought he would never feel again after Rem died. Not that he was always going to be sad, it was because he thought he simply did not deserve to be happy.
Being the one responsible behind the death of Emilia, Rem, and Rosswal, Subaru really didn't have any right to live a happy life. And he knew this. That's why his happy thoughts with Ram turned a bit sour at times. Since he thought he didn't deserve it.
Everytime he felt happy around Ram, he would feel himself getting sad all of the sudden. Because he felt so horrible that he was happy. One thing Subaru would say about his two years of isolation was that he never blamed anybody, or made excuses as to why he was in that position. He knew why he was there, and that it was his fault. And actually came to accept his punishment of living in eternal guilt.
The clock tower chimed in the distance, signaling to him that the day was over. Subaru took his piles of papers and set them to the side as he stood up from his desk. Finally being able to stretch his legs after another boring day of sitting at a desk and doing paperwork.
Just before he could make his way out of the building. Subarus sight caught a glimpse of a paper with a little drawing on it that he himself made. During Subarus' common sessions of extreme boredom. He would occasionally pull out a blank sheet of paper and draw whatever was on his mind.
Stuff he drew included things from his original world, as to not forget what that thing looked like in his mind. But on this occasion, he drew a picture of Ram with a horn sticking out of her forehead. Subaru had gotten curious as to what Ram would look like if she still had her horn.
She looked pretty much the same as Rem when she had her horn out. The only difference being her hair band being on the left side of her eye instead of the right. Sadly, coloured pencils didn't exist in the world he was living in, so he couldn't colour it in and get the full effect the image had.
Taking the piece of paper he stuffed it into his pocket, and walked out of the bank to finally make his way home. Since it was spring finally, Subaru didn't have to walk home in the freezing cold. Also not having to walk home in the midst of night. Instead the sun stuck around in the sky as Subaru made his walk home.
Once he returned home. Walking onto the walkway, he made his way up to the front door. He slowly opened and closed the door. Just in case Ram was sleeping in bed or on the couch which was a pretty common thing to come home to since she got pregnant.
Ram did not come out to greet Subaru in her signature cold tone, meaning that she was probably asleep in the bedroom. Subaru didn't want to wake her, but just wanted to check up and see if she was doing well.
Slowly walking up to the bedroom door. He quietly opened it. He performed every action gently. Not wanting to make even the slightest of noises. Mostly because he knew full well of the consequences that would follow if he were to wake Ram from her naps.
But to Subarus unexpected surprise he found Ram laying there wide awake. But she wasn't laying there alone. She had their child resting on her shoulder. Subaru couldn't believe he missed the birth, but was happy to finally see that their child was brought into the world.
He was also relieved to not have to go through the pain of having the bones in his hand crushed into dust.
Once Subaru entered the room, Ram gave him a serious look. "Be quiet, Barusu" She said in a whisper.
"Are you kidding me, I missed the birth" Subaru said.
"You were not missing much. The doctor handed her to me and left just five minutes ago, Barusu"
Subaru walked over to get a better sight of his child. She had her face laying on Ram's shoulder so he was unable to see her eyes if they were visible.
Ram was enjoying her time holding her daughter. During the early afternoon Ram was outside in the garden tending to the flowers when she suddenly went into labor. Luckily the neighbor overheard her painful cries and went off to get a doctor for her.
What followed next were the most painful hours of her life, but it was worth it in the end. After nine months of waiting Ram had finally given birth to their daughter. Being glad to finally have the whole process over with.
The room stayed quiet for a couple minutes. Subaru couldn't take his eyes off their daughter in Ram's arms. He was overwhelmed by a tsunami of emotions, to the point all he could do was stare.
Eventually he felt that Ram had used up all her time holding their daughter, and that he deserved a turn.
"Alright Ram, your time is up. Hand her here" Subaru said as he held his arms out.
"You better not drop her, Barusu" Ram said in a very serious tone.
Subaru couldn't believe Ram thought that he was that clumsy to the point he would drop his own child. "I won't drop her, just pass her over"
Despite her reluctance Ram picked up their child and placed her in Subarus arms. Who was being as careful as he possibly could as to not drop her. Once she was handed to him, Subaru made sure to handle her gently, making sure not to wake her.
Subaru thought she was sleeping, but that thought went away when he noticed her start to open her eyes slightly. Immediately noticing that they both shared the same eye colour.
He felt proud of himself that he got himself a child. If he were to be told no more than three years ago that he would be in a different world and have a child with an Oni of all things. He definitely would have thought that they were crazy.
The very second he laid his eyes on their child he immediately knew she would grow up to be very beautiful. Subaru was also going to do everything he could to give their child the best life. Promising to take care of her everyday for the next eighteen years. Ram was no different.
Unfortunately for Subaru, it only took three minutes until Ram held her arms back out. Silently telling him that his short time with their daughter is up, and to hand her back.
Subaru just let out a sigh, but still catered to Ram's silent demand and handed her back to Ram so she could continue to hog her for the rest of the day. He wasn't too upset over it, being glad that Ram loved their daughter as much as he did.
Since Ram had just given birth only minutes ago, that left him to make dinner. He made his way to the bedroom door preparing to make dinner for both Ram and himself, but before he could leave the room Ram noticed something and stopped him.
"Barusu, look" Ram said.
Subaru stopped in his tracks and turned around to find the sight of a small horn coming out of their daughter's forehead. He didn't put much thought into whether their daughter would have a horn or not. Mostly because he didn't really care if she did or did not.
Both Ram and Subaru didn't care about how powerful their child was. They would have accepted her if she did have a horn or not. Ram especially, didn't want her daughter to be put on the same pedestal as she was. They both wanted to focus on raising their child to be a decent person and live a great life. Even willing to limit the amount of bickering that came between the both of them.
