The Never-Ending War Chapter 21
The blaring alarm goes off in the dorm room of Amber Riptide the group is sipping on hot drinks in mugs double checking their backpacks. All the standard gear they would carry on a mission fills the bags, food, water, camping gear, emergency medical equipment. After the Huntsmen pull on their packs and place their weapons on them. The equipment pulling on their shoulders weighs twenty Kilos; except for Paul who has an additional eight and a half Kilos of medical equipment and Tina who has an extra five kilos of ammunition for her machine gun.
Alec pats Mimi's Pack, "All good, let's go meet some soldiers." Alec steps out the door followed by Mimi then Beethoven then Raven, her heels clicking on the solid tile. Rita looks at her team her spear in one hand, she nods and follows, Paul then Tina then Danny. The group waits at the transports for the group of Cadets.
Mimi's ears perk ups everyone waits, she turns her head towards a sound no one hears.
The Cadet Lieutenant's voice can be heard over the two hundred marching feet.
We never know our mamas; the Lieutenant's voice calls out
We never knew our mamas, the rest echo
We never knew our dads
We never knew our dads
We always had a family
We always had a family
In the corps
In the corps
We all march for that
We all march for that
We all march with a hundred steps,
bring hope to all.
Serving is all we have,
serving is all we know.
With our rifle,
our guns and hope.
Tomorrow is why we fight
For all we know.
"Company halt," The young man raises his hand to signal them to stop. With a salute he stares at Alec, "First Beacon Cadet Security Company reporting."
Alec reaches out his hand to shake Gregory Smith's hand, "Glad you all could join us."
Gregory shakes the offered hand. "Glad you invited us."
The group of one hundred- and eight-armed people enter the heavy transport bullhead down to the ground level of the City of Vale. The mishmash of Huntsmen and Cadets fill the aircraft minor chatting leaves the passenger hold a loud area.
"We will be landing in Huntsman Village, then starting our run towards the wall. We shouldn't be given any problems but if we have to deal with any authorities just be respectful," Alec explains to the Lieutenant. "We will keep to main streets and should not have any trouble making it to the wall. What are your peoples average maintainable pace?"
"Hopefully around a four and half minute Kilometer but this is a long one so I would say closer to five. So, figure this whole thing will take two and a half to three hours."
"We are in no rush don't push yourselves too hard." The bullhead sets down and the doors open. Everyone exits with a calm demeanor. The group steps out and begins filing in. "Mimi, you are our lead, Raven with her. To the wall." Alec says calmly, "Beethoven, Rita, Tina and me on the flanks; Paul, Danny take up the rear." Alec looks at the Cadet commander, "Lieutenant set up is yours."
"Alright I want two columns Alpha and Bravo front, Charlie and Delta back. Officers organize your men."
The Cadets form up between the Huntsmen. Mimi looks back, "Alright let's go." She starts off in at a jog with Raven next to her. Her heels clicking as she starts off. The columns begin to follow the women at the same pace. The force draws attention as it goes down the road, armed for war and in full uniform.
As they reach the end of the Huntsman quarter, "Alright, we are coming to the end of the Huntsmen area, we are entering the main city." As they exit the Huntsmen quarter after twenty minutes of running, they cross through the unspoken separation between the huntsmen and civilian areas of the City of Vale.
The one hundred and eight pass though the lesser used side street between the two areas of the city. The wall is barely visible down the almost straight path. The group runs past civilians and a few police. At least one of the groups notices a police officer talking on a radio. The Lieutenant shifts his position in the Formation to run with Alec and Rita. "One of my people noticed that the police may have been making calls."
Rita's wings flutter, "Well we are making good time hopefully they don't stop us."
Alec keeps running. "Two police cars just blocked the two side alleys we just passed. I think this is going to be a scene. He places the headset for his scroll on his ear, "We will be using Channel two. Make sure everyone stays calm."
The Lieutenant nods as he returns to his men. The group keeps its pace as they move down the street. It had been an hour since they started and forty minutes since they left the comforts of the huntsmen quarter.
"Ten police officers are approaching on horseback," Raven calls over the radio.
"Bring us to a stop." Alec says with a sigh.
"Company halt." Mimi yells louder than needed. The small force halts, the cadets falling into a stiff marching rest and the eight Huntsmen gather at the front of the group. The police officers halt their horses and dismount. Their rifles stay on their backs.
Alec steps in front of the group with a smile, "Hello officers how can we help you."
"We have received calls about an army of crazed gunmen running down the street." The highest-ranking officer replies as he walks up to the group.
"Well officer we are definitely not crazed." Alec laughs off the comment as the others shift with their weapons. "I am Alec Tross Unit leader of the Huntsman Unit Amber Riptide, this is my unit, Mimi Lieander, Beethoven Rening, Raven Luir, Rita Kong, Paul Yosif, Tina Rasputin and Danny Klean." Alec motions to each member of his unit as he tells their names. The fine Cadets with us are led by Cadet Lieutenant Gregory Smith."
The Lieutenant Steps forward a serious look on his face, He salutes, "Cadet Lieutenant Gregory Smith of the First Beacon Security Company, how may I be of service. My men are in the middle of a long run and if we stop for too long, I am afraid they may have trouble starting up again; we don't have the advantage of an activated Aura."
The Police Officer stares at the group, "We had gotten reports of a group of armed gunmen running around the city, with the Claw and the Breeds increasing in numbers locally and an increase in crime. Well, look you are obviously who you say you are, Huntsmen have a look about them and well soldiers possibly even more so. Finish your run, call us to warn us next time though, people aren't used to seeing kids such as yourselves armed like you are."
"Yes siiirrrrr," an alarm starts howling. The radios on the officers' shoulders begins screaming. The Huntsmen's earpieces went off. Alec turns immediately, "Grimm are in the city move it!"
The Police Officer looks at the Huntsman, "Three Blocks west, they came from underground. We don't have the firepower to take them on."
"Clear the Civilians. Lieutenant, you, and your men are second line kill anything that gets past us. Rita I will need a secure post, Team AMBR with me." The one hundred and eight soldiers and huntsmen start running as people running away part for the armed force heading towards the threat.
"I want the platoons to spread out behind the Huntsmen team, we will bast our firepower around the secure post. Our weapons are not designed to take out Grimm we will need to use volume of fire to provide support." Lieutenant Smith yells out to his troops as he chambers a round into his rifle.
In the minute it takes to get to the incursion the group has organized, four platoons' fan out behind the huntsmen as the start going down the street the communications are flooded with calls.
The group stops as it stares at a group of Beowolves, bodies crunch as they stare at the group. The street is covered in blood and gore, the small shops and cafes along the sidewalk have broken windows, the remnants of the large shop windows are covered in gore. The crimson liquid fills the streets.
"Well shit."
"That is not normal."
"Kill them."
Rita kicks in the door to one of the businesses and directs arcs of fire out of the building. Alec closes the range with Raven and Mimi at his side, Beethoven takes a knee and opens fire with his heavy sniper rifle. A Raven's whip flashes with speed as the wind dust makes the whip increase its speed. Mimi slams into a Beowolf with her sword and with a single shot from her weapon she cuts its head off. Alec points his weapons at another beast and fires. Tina's machine gun burps out supporting fire.
Cadets throw their fire at the monsters in front of them as the four Huntsmen prove to not be enough to stop the impossible horde of Grimm inside the walled city. The dozen Beowolves die in ten minutes. The huntsmen start pushing forward two platoons start pushing after them. Doors are kicked in and in hope of finding someone alive. A few wounded and shell-shocked civilians are dragged back to the secure area that had been created.
Alec stops the group, "We can't go any further from our Secure post, we need to find out if we can get a message back to Beacon."
"Alec something is coming," Mimi's voice sounds more worried. "We Need To Go Now!" Her voice echoes as an echo begins to chase the group as they pull back. The Cadets pull back as quickly as they can. Team AMBR moves slower to give the soldiers some time.
Alec stares down the street, "Mimi tell me what it is."
"It sounds like a million stomping feet," Mimi stares at the street. "I think it is a hoard of Lapin."
Alec activates his semblance and opens fire with one of his weapons, "I am sure it is a hoard of Lapin. We fall back now." Alec reaches for his headset, "We have Lapin, dig in and call-in support."
The Half Meter tall killer Grimm Rabbits move towards the group. They cannot move quickly but the claws on their upper arms are half their height and able to cut though anything with the given time. Their numbers were their greatest strength moving slowly towards the group. Alec enters the building that had been made into the secure post.
"Alright, Raven it is Lapin give us a run down." Alec checks his weapons and sits down, he places his knife out, then another one.
The woman in her dress and heels stares out at the black, red and white mass stepping forward splashing the blood and guts from the already dead. "The Lapin were first reported as being a problem in the battle of Vale it is theorized that they were created to excel in the urban suicidal fighting that was happening in the city. They are a goddam horde force deadly alone but easily defeated with any normal weapons. Roughly four to eight rounds of ammunition per target with normal weapons we can probably take them out with one or two rounds."
"How many are there out there?" Alec says calmly as Beethoven aims down his rifle.
"Roughly eight thousand in eyesight, probably more."
Alec takes a deep breath behind him he hears the cadets calling over the radio, "Alright here is what we are going to do," he picks up his weapons, "get the civilians in an upper room and block it up. Tell them to stay quiet. Lieutenant your people will be the last line of defense, we will take point." The Huntsmen step outside of the building, "Tell me you got through to Beacon."
"We did, fifteen minutes before back up gets here. Multiple Grimm incursions throughout the city. Imerta says it is a planned strike." The young man with now a hundred soldiers' lives in his hands looks at his men, Machine gunners up front fire at will, medics get the civilians secured lock yourselves in there with them. Usera you too I want our comms up as long as possible." He points at two soldiers. "You too secure the outside of the room and defend it with your lives." The numerous people quickly salute and move.
The shooting starts as the soldiers open fire. Alec calmly activates his semblance and opens fire making every shot count cutting through two or three of the beasts as he begins to step forward. Mimi Climbs on top of one of her glyphs pulling Beethoven with her as he fires down with his heavy rifle using explosive rounds with infused fire dust to cut holes in the horde. Raven steps forward walking over the rubble with no problems as her gravity dust infused heels makes her steps easily, her whip slashing out cutting the monsters into pieces her dress flickering with fire and electricity as it passes onto its targets.
Behind the slow advance into darkness is Rita with her spear rifle in her shoulder already glowing as her semblance makes sure it is functioning at its peak performance. By her side is Tina her machine gun firing as she walks a stiff face holds her eyes staring forward. Danny pulls herself into the air firing at the beasts, her pistol passing from hand to hand as she moves through the sky. Paul is the last in the group as he kills the small beasts passing the group on either flank short bursts leaving his weapon as he walks.
From the building behind them every weapon the cadets have fire on the horde. Behind them the medics rush the civilians into a small top room in the building they are defending. A radio is almost thrown in followed by its operator Specialist Sargent Usera. The door is slammed as everyone inside starts reenforcing the door. Outside the two soldiers start layering rubble on the outside of the room. Once that is done, they grab their weapons and prepare to defend the room with their lives, they look at each other their smooth faces age ten years in the look as they release the bolts of their weapons.
The Huntsmen are in a melee with the monsters by the time the civilians were secured Mimi and Beethoven drop from above Mimi placing one of her cat's-eye Glyphs blocking her left flank as she hacks through a pair of monsters. Beethoven slams his hammer down on the creatures. Alec pulls one blade from the skull plate of a Lepin, his offhand empties the magazine from his second weapon. Raven is shoved into a worse position the whip is almost worthless as the beasts push in, she draws her boot knife, her whip wrapping around her waist. Raven's hands begin burn as she flicks fire dust at monsters and her knife cuts into one.
Rita kicks a dead Grimm off her spear as she brings the back of spear to another creature. Danny Slams on the ground throwing an empty magazine aside as she reloads her pistol, she pulls a knife from her belt and stabs another monster while the slide on her pistol loads another round of ammunition. Tina grabs one of the monster rabbits and tears it in half her machinegun hanging off her side empty. Paul slams another magazine into his rifle as he keeps firing at the creatures.
The Lieutenant slams a fist into one of the walls, "Alec pull back, back up is delayed." The creatures start to surround the eight huntsmen. The man jumps up a pistol in one hand and his rapier in the other. "First Squad with me we are keeping the retreat open." He runs out opening fire with his pistol, followed by twelve other Cadets.
Alec doesn't look at the other man, "How bad."
"Any back up is held up, the Army is mobilizing but they are out of position for inner wall defense. The Huntsmen are mostly tied down and Beacon is under orders not to fire into the city. Now pull back."
Without another word everyone starts to fall back as the wave of Grimm thins. The group sets down inside Tina slams her machine gun on the ground throwing another belt of ammunition into her weapon. Alec stares out as the horde begins to gather again. Single shots are heard as opportunities arise, but everyone takes the moment to prepare.
"We are fucked, aren't we?" One of the Cadets asks.
"Help will make it." Another replies.
"Right so we are fucked."
Cadet Lieutenant Gregory Smith snaps, "Cut it, we are going to hold the position alright."
Alec stares out at the gathering horde, he taps his headpiece, "This is Alec Unit leader of Huntsman Unit Amber Riptide, I am holding a position with the First Beacon Security Cadet Company. We have rescued civilians I need an evacuation or reinforcements. We are transceiver code 1184.43. This is an official S.O.S."
Inside the fortress of Beacon alarms ring out and a door to the hanger is kicked open. It breaks from the kick. Hayley doesn't even look up at the group of eight that entered the hanger. "Bullhead twelve."
"Thanks."
"Didn't expect it to be you."
"Just get us there."
Twelve Armored Carriers speed out of Beacons lowest level knocking abandoned cars out of the way as they tear down the streets. Harriet starts talking into her headset, "Alright stay into your Units everyone has their assignments, the Grimm are everywhere in the city and this is looking like a play by our friend from the warehouse." The Armored Vehicles break off split into the city."
In a police precinct in one of the more violent parts of Vale a police officer stares at a paper map. "We have officers trapped here, here and here; they are not equipped to face Grimm. I have a dozen officers trapped in here with us but there is no way we can get help to our people." Gunfire is constant from outside the office they are in. "We are pulling the old war supplies from the basement; I will let you have your take of it if you get my people to safety."
The pair of women standing with the officer looking at the map smile their red and white lipstick making him worry as they smile. "You have a deal Chief." Ones of the women says.
"We will do everything in our power to get your people to safety." The other finishes the thought.
"And the civilians." The Chief insists.
"And the civilians." They repeat in unison. The pair walks out as the Chief is handed a rifle by another officer his antlers touching the top of the door frame.
"Uh, Chief?"
"Yes, Jenkins."
"Do you think that was a good idea?"
The Chief breaks a window and points his rifle at a Beowolf, "I can say for certain that I will pay for it." The shot from his rifle ends the conversation.
A dozen uniformed personnel run around a very important man as he stares at the holographic map of the city of Vale in front of him. General Augustus Leonard Pincter watches as everything fall apart around him.
A Lieutenant runs up, "Sir the airships have launched and are sending support fighters to the city, but they are in a bit of a bind without orders to use their weapons on the city. The First Battalion is fighting all over the city with their companies caught off Guard and the eighteenth Battalion is holding positions on the wall they are doing their best to fend off attack from behind. The Seventh, Fifth and Twelfth Battalions are Deployed to the countryside."
"What is Beacon doing?"
"Deploying teams to every hot spot available but there are only a few hundred huntsmen available."
"The First Armored Corps is still in reserve, correct?"
"Yessir."
The General sighs with a weight larger than he expected. "Have the First Armored deploy in support of the Huntsmen. Gather every other man, woman or child that can carry a weapon and have them reinforce the civilian bunkers, police precincts and hospitals."
"Sir."
"Hold the line and pray to the gods and devils the Huntsmen can hold save us."
In a hospital screams and cries ring out as a woman runs down the hall, "Clear the way I am needed at the South entrance!" The under armed security officer runs down the hall a new magazine is slammed into her pistol. She sides down the stairs as she runs to a door with a dozen other people holding it back.
"Get the security gate down its going to break through."
The officer starts pulling on the gate pulling the metal gate down with all the force she can muster. The door cracks as a Grimm's paw rips the door someone screams and blood splatters across the face of the security guard. Her weapon is drawn, and the shots start to ring out. The gate slams home and locks.
A nurse grabs a young man whose leg and tail are now laying on the ground under the gate and drags him to a hospital bed.
Crimson Imerta, straps her weapon on her hip as she marches toward the bullheads. "I am going down there."
Her best friend and assistant raises his hands, "I know." The men and women behind him are wielding every weapon under the sky. "We are too."
Maximillian stares out of the view ports of The Beacon, "We will not be able to use most of our weapons unless we get precise coordinates, or someone says we can burn a city block."
Sirus smiles as he turns to walk out the bridge his mechanized suit making the bulkhead ring, "How good of shots are your people?"
"The best."
"Got it." His suit exits the bridge as Maximillian turns to the pilot.
"Bring us over Crowhide Park." He looks to his weapons officer, "All weapons are free to fire when we get coordinates."
"Yes, sir."
