Sorry it's been a while. I've been quite busy. Please send reviews after you read this chapter. I would love to hear your opinions.

Into the Maze

There were images of Grievers. Edward was standing around them. A girl with dark hair and ice blue eyes was above him saying, "Everything's going to change," over and over again.

Then there was a woman who constantly said, "Wicked is good,"

Edward and his brother were with three other people. They were discussing things. One of them he called "Buddy,"

The two brothers were laying on moveable beds under sheets. They reached out their hands towards one another.

The same girl was over him, telling him the same thing again.

Then more flashbacks appeared. The lift. The closing gates. Screens showing Gladers. Then a voice crying out, "Tommy!"

Edward woke up with a jolt, breathing heavily. He pressed his hand against his forehead afraid that he might experience those horrifying dreams again.

"Hey…" a hand touched his shoulder again. He jumped. "It's alright. It's alright. It's me," the voice was sweet and gentle. It was Thomas.

"Tom…" Edward breathed.

"Are you okay?" his brother asked.

He nodded.

"Dreams,"

He nodded again.

"I couldn't sleep either too,"

"In my dream, someone was calling you Tommy. It sounded like they were crying out for you,"

Thomas stared at him blankly. Before he could ask Edward, they heard the clanking of doors opening. They turned towards the Maze doors to see them opening. Newt, Minho, and Alby were in front of them. Strangest thing was Alby was geared up to run like Minho. The brother's crossed their eyebrows. After giving Newt a nod, they disappeared through the doors.

"Why is Alby going with Minho?" Edward asked.

"I don't know. But I'm sure he knows what he's doing," Thomas said. He turned back to him. "How's your arm?"

Edward looked at his bandaged arm. He saw traces of blood damping the white but it was less painful than yesterday. "It's alright," he still noticed the worried look on Thomas's face. "It's not a life-threatening wound Tom. I'll be fine,"

Before Thomas could talk to him, they heard a voice saying, "You two are up bright and early,"

They saw it was Newt looking at them with an amused expression. "Your arm looking good Edward?"

"It's alright,"

"You should take the day off. Get your wrist resting,"

Edward wanted to protest but his brother insisted he wouldn't do work. And he nodded. A hour after breakfast, he sat on a log with Chuck watching Thomas, Newt and Zart chopping away at a log.

"Why would Alby go into the maze? He's not a runner," Edward asked.

"Things are different now. Alby went to retrace Ben's footsteps before sun down," Newt answered.

Thomas stopped doing his job. "Wiat a minute. He's going back to where Ben was just stung?"

"He knows what he's doing,"

"But what if he gets stung too?"

Newt stopped. "Minho's the best runner. Alby will be fine too as long as they stick together. He knows what he's doing. He knows better than any of us,"

"What does that mean?" Edward asked.

"You heard right? Every month, the Box sends up a new greenie. But someone had to be first. Alby was the first one to be sent up. He spent a whole month alone here. Alone before I came up,"

Edward and Thomas shared sympathetic glances with one another.

"It wasn't easy for him at all," Newt continued. "Hear this guys. When more boys started coming up one after the other every month, Alby learnt this. What's important is that we all had each other. We're in this together. We're a family now. We enter this place separately, but we leave all together,"

His words seemed to lift the brothers' concerns. Thomas kept hacking away.

"There you go Tommy," Newt praised.

The moment he said 'Tommy', Thomas stopped working. He thought back to what Edward just told him about his dream.

"Hey, are you goanna help?" Zart asked.

Thomas focused back on his task, not realising that Newt was giving him a strange glance.

Taking his glance off the three Gladers chopping at the wood, Edward looked at what Chuck was doing. "What'ya carving there Chuck?"

Chuck looked at him and saw the curious smile. He showed it. "Just a little totem,"

"Well…" Edward glanced closer seeing a face on it. "Looks rather cool so far. You're doing quite a great job,"

Chuck smiled. "Thanks," he kept on carving.

"How long have you been working on that?"

"Since I arrived here," he sounded sad.

"Hey. Don't worry. We'll get out one day. And when we do, I bet you'll be an amazing carver,"

Chuck looked at him again. "You think so?"

"You've done a wonderful job so far. I don't see what other profession you can be really good at Chuckie,"

Once again Chuck loved the complement. "If you call me Chuckie, can I call you Eddie?"

"Be my guest," Edward offered a fist and Chuck fist bumped it.

No sooner than Thomas had done a period of chopping with Newt and Zart that it began to rain. Everyone took cover under the sleeping quarters and the shelters. They were all glancing at the open gates to the maze.

"They should be back by now!" Edward said.

"What happens if they don't make it?" Thomas asked.

"They will!" Newt sounded positive. "Minho's always made it back before!"

Chuck remained a little close to a worried Edward. "They'll be back Eddie," his words didn't quite lift Edward's spirits. His mind was still glued to the image of the stung Ben attacking him, telling him it was his fault. He blocked out every other thought that came to him.

Edward. A voice called in his head. Can you hear me?

Edward almost felt his heart stop. He tried to pretend it was his imagination.

Edward don't panic. The voice sounded like a girl's voice. It was gentle and soft. They are not going to make it. Your friends aren't going to make it. You must send a search party out to find them before dark or they'll kill them.

The young teen felt his skin shaking. It couldn't be an actual girl there were no girls here.

Was he dreaming again? Was he imagining it? He was beginning to freak out.

"Hey Eddie, you okay?" Chuck asked grabbing his arm. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine," he lied. He didn't want to worry the boy. "I'm just…I'm just worried for Minho and Alby,"

"They'll be fine," the little boy assured again.

The voice didn't come back again. Edward decided to pretend it was all just a dream.

When the rain passed and it was getting close to dark, everyone gathered in front of the gates. There was silence. The brothers were getting impatient. They feared for the Glade's leader and the Keeper.

"This is ridiculous. Can't we just send someone in after them?" Thomas asked.

"It's against the rules," Gally answered. "Either they make it or they don't,"

"Haven't you ever heard of the phrase, 'No one gets left behind,'?" Edward asked crossing his arms.

"Haven't you ever heard of the word 'rules?" Gally counter argued.

Edward frowned.

"We can't risk losing anyone else," Newt said sadly.

Just then there was a whoosh of wind and then a clang of creaking echoed across the air. The gates were beginning to close slowly.

"Oh no," Chuck whispered.

Desperately Thomas peered through the doors hoping that Alby and Minho would appear in sight. He raised a hand. "Look! There!"

From out behind a corner appeared Minho and Alby.

"Wait, no. Something's wrong!" Newt was panicking.

Minho was pulling Alby by the waist. He was unconscious; he was so heavy that it slowed him down.

"Come on Minho, you can do it!" Chuck cheered.

"You can make it!" Edward joined.

But with every second that passed Minho was getting closer to getting trapped outside.

"You've gotta leave him!" yelled Gally.

"They're not goanna make it," Newt muttered.

"That's it. I'm going in," Edward tried to run in, but Gally grabbed him.

"What are you trying to do?" he demanded. "Get yourself killed? You'll be breaking the rule,"

"But they're right there. Surely we can…

"The rule is the rule!" Gally spat.

Suddenly Thomas went running into the maze.

Everyone shouted, "No!" at him and tried to pull him back.

"Tom!" Edward tried to run after him, but he was suddenly pulled back by Gally. "Let go of me!"

He elbowed Gally in the stomach and managed to free himself. But by the time, he had reached the doors. They had closed.

Thomas panted as he landed on the floor with a thud. He looked behind and saw the doors closed, separating him from the Glade, his new friends, his brother.

He looked ahead and was met with a hard-tempered face of Minho. "Nice job. You just killed yourself!"

"Tom!" Edward screamed through the crack between the doors. "Tom! Can you hear me!"

Thomas heard a muffled voice right behind him. His brother's. "Hey Ed!" he banged the door. "It's me!"

"It's me! Are you okay?"

"I'm fine!"

"Thomas!" Minho shouted behind him. "We have to find a place to hide at night. Help me drag Alby!"

Thomas looked at the desperate Asian runner with the weaker Glade leader in his arms. He looked back to the wall. He couldn't leave his brother.

"Hey! If you want to see your brother again, you have to help me hide Alby!" Minho implored. "Now come on! Before the Grievers come out!"

Thomas sighed. He turned back to the crack between the walls. "Ed! Can you hear me?"

"Yes!" his brother was relieved.

"Just hear me out! Okay! I'm goanna go with Minho!"

"No! You can't!"

"I have to! It's the only way I'll survive!"

Edward's heart was pounding with worry. But Thomas was right. "Just promise me you'll survive!"

"I will!" Thomas kept getting called by Minho. "I've gotta go! It'll be okay! It'll be okay! I'll be back with you tomorrow!" With deep regret, he pulled his hand away from the doors and rushed to help Minho with Alby.

"How could do you that?!" Edward had punched Gally in the face after turning at the Builder with an angry frown.

"You were about to run after him!"

"Well I would have rather done than just stood back and did nothing like you!"

"I saved your life!"

"Well thank you! For stopping me from saving my brother!" Edward pushed him back.

Gally grew furious. The boys started to have a rowel at each other, only to be pushed apart by Newt.

"Enough you two!" he shouted, pushing them away. Gally stood back.

Newt turned to Edward. "There's nothing you can do for him Ed except pray and hope,"

His words didn't lift Edward's spirits. He turned around and walked away from the crowd, the second in command looking out to him with deep sympathy along with Chuck.

Newt and Chuck had noticed that Edward hadn't joined the silent feast. They went to check on the new Glader at the Homestead. He wasn't in his bunk. Turning around they saw him sitting on a log on the grass, all alone. Deep sorrow filled their eyes.

"Poor Eddie. I can't imagine what he must be going through," the youngest Glader said.

"I can," Newt said. "I know how he feels,"

Chuck could see a look of sorrow in his eyes. He wanted to ask but something told him not to.

"Is he doing okay?" Frypan approached them. "I brought him a bowl of soup,"

"I don't think soup's going to help," Newt said. He turned around to address everyone who was looking out to the young brother with deep concern. "It's best if you all leave him alone. Now get to rest everyone. We'll be up first thing tomorrow to check out those opened gates," Everyone departed to their hammocks. Newt noticed that Chuck hadn't moved.

"You can talk to him Chuck if you want," he offered. Taking one last glance at the closed gates thinking about Alby and Minho…and Thomas, Newt went to his hammock and fell asleep turning his head away from the sight of the closed doors that had trapped his friends in the maze.

Edward stared at the closed gates which his brother had run through. He heard footsteps. He turned around to see Chuck approaching him. He sat down next to him.

"Here," he offered a cup.

"Thanks," Edward took it. "It's not Gally's drink, is it?"

"Just some water from supplies. We usually save it for planting, but I thought you'd like a sip instead,"

Edward sipped it. "Thanks Chuckie," he looked again towards the maze.

"I'm sorry Eddie," the young boy apologised.

"I should be in there with him, helping him,"

Chuck turned to him. "You think he would want you in there rather than in here where you're safe?"

"It doesn't' feel right to be in here while he's out there. And like him I couldn't just stand there watching Alby and Minho getting trapped while I could've done something. Why couldn't a number of us just run inside and got both out?"

"Because it's against the rules," Chuck said. "They're there for a reason. To protect us," He sounded regretful. He didn't want to insult Thomas at all. Like Edward he was deeply worried for him.

Edward couldn't say anything else after that.

Chuck yawned. "I'm off to bed,"

Edward turned. "Goodnight Chuckie? I'm just goanna stay up a little while longer,"

Chuck patted his shoulder. "Goodnight Eddie," giving Edward a comforting smile, he walked back to the hammocks and fell asleep the moment they was resting on his.

Edward turned back towards the maze, worrying for Thomas. He didn't know what he would do without him. He was scared. He was afraid. How was he going to get to sleep? How could he turn in when Thomas could be out there? Struggling to survive against the Grievers that lurked behind those walls of stone?

Once again, he remembered Newt telling him that there was nothing he could do except hope. He decided to at least try to get to sleep.

The moment he stood up, the strange voice in his head, the same girl's voice echoed in mind again.

Edward.

Edward felt his heart stop. "Who's that?" he turned around. "Who are you?" All he saw and heard were boys snorting and snoring like pigs.

Edward.

This time Edward jumped. Who are you? He paused. Did I just speak that in my head? He pressed his hand over his gaped mouth.

Edward. The girl's voice was more gentle and less surprising. Just calm down. Just listen to me please.

Edward stopped thinking. He just stood still and kept his thoughts silent.

Edward, you have to listen to me. Thomas and your friends aren't going to survive in the Maze all by themselves.

Once again Edward was petrified. Who is this speaker? How does she know about my brother…?

Stop thinking! the voice interrupted again. Please. It's impossible to talk to you when you're thinking. Just listen please?

Edward stayed silent.

Edward. Thomas is not going to make it.

Who are you? And how do you know about my brother?

I'm…no one. Your brother won't survive. You have to get inside and save him.

But how? The gates are closed.

You know the answer. I know what your plan is and what you're thinking of.

Wait? What?

I can hear your thoughts and I know what you're planning.

You what?

Just do your plan and get inside that maze. Only you can save him. They won't harm you.

Before Edward could ask the question, the voice disappeared. His head ached again. It was so strange. He didn't know how to tell anyone including his brother about the voice. They would think he was crazy. He looked ahead to the Maze doors and saw the ivy snaking up the stone walls that stood beside it. He turned his head and saw just about everyone had fallen asleep. He stood up, holding up a determined face.

I'm going inside to save my brother.

Standing at the foot of the ivy vines, he looked up. The wall was so high. He glanced at his wounded wrist. He hoped that the climbing strength required wouldn't restrain it so much. Looking up he took a deep breath…and climbed.

What did you all think? I've added an element from the books into the movie. What did you all think? And especially about someone crying out 'Tommy'? I'm sure you can all guess who did. Please send in reviews and let me know what you all thought. I would love to know your opinions and add in any ideas. I always wanted this sotry to be a mixiture of both the books and movies. Please send in what aspects of the books you'd like me to add in and what not to add in. I hope you all have enjoyed this chapter.
