Eugene watched in amazement and relief as his father sat up in his bed, it took all his willpower to not tackle his father and pull him into the tightest hug he could give the older man.
"H-How do you feel?" Eugene hesitantly asked his father.
"I feel fine. Better than fine, actually." Edmund declared. Then he looked at his right shoulder and frowned. "All things considered."
Eugene frowned as he remembers his father's lost arm. "I'm sorry about your arm."
Edmund shook his head. "Its not your fault. I shouldn't have been so reckless. Grabbing the moonstone like that was obviously going to do damage. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole kingdom is in ruin because of my mistake."
"Don't say that." Rapunzel said. "The Dark Kingdom has taken some damage, but it's still standing strong."
Edmund's eyes grew wide as he noticed Rapunzel. "Princess Rapunzel? Why are you here? I thought you had returned to Corona."
"I did, but I came back to help." Rapunzel replied.
Edmund nodded at her. "That's very generous of you." Then he looked around the room. "Where are the Brotherhood?"
"They're working at the moment." Varian answered. "But we can bring them here, if you want, Your Highness."
"Please do." King Edmund nodded. Then Varian ran off to get the brotherhood.
"Do you need anything else, Dad?" Eugene asked.
Edmund leaned back into his bed. "Well, I am a bit hungry-"
"Lance, get some food!" Eugene quickly ordered. Lance nodded and went to fetch some food for the king. "Anything else?"
"I should be fine." the King insisted. "However, you should inform your sister that I am awake now. I would like to see her too."
Eugene and Rapunzel frowned, worrying Edmund. "What's wrong? Where is Cassandra?"
Then Eugene spoke. "Dad, a lot has happened while you were unconscious."
When Lance returned with food and Varian returned with the Brotherhood, everyone gave Edmund a chance to eat and speak with the Brotherhood, as well as discuss how Edmund was healed.
"You're telling me that Edmund was healed by...The princess'...hair?" Hector asks.
"Exactly." Varian confirms. "It shouldn't be too shocking when you think about it. I mean, if the magic of the Sundrop went to Rapunzel, than it's only natural its healing ability would go to her too."
"I'm just glad to see you looking healthy again, your majesty." Adira said.
Edmund smiled. "Thank you, Adira." Then he frowned However, I still want to know where Cassandra is. What has happened to her?"
There was a moment of silence again, the group looked at each other, wondering who would be the one the tell the king.
Then Eugene spoke up. "Dad, we're not sure where Cassandra is. She ran off."
"That doesn't make any sense." Edmund protested. "Cassandra would never just leave the Dark Kingdom. Why would she leave?"
"She left after..." Eugene took another deep breath, then answered. "...after taking the moonstone."
King Edmund stared at his son in disbelief. "What?"
"I'm sorry, but its true, your majesty." Rapunzel said. "Princess Cassandra was able to take the moonstone and she ran away with it."
"That can't be true." Edmund denied. "My Cassie wouldn't do something so reckless. Where's Gothel? I need to speak with her."
That seemed to make the tension thicker than it already was. Then Quirin spoke. "I'm afraid we don't know where she is, either, Sir. She seemed to have disappeared shortly after Princess Cassandra left."
Edmund frowned more and sunk into his bed. He placed a hand over his face, probably to hide any tears that might form.
Then the King took a deep breath. "Leave me. I need to be alone for a bit."
Eugene frowned. "Dad-"
"Please, Eugene." Edmund gently said. "Just for a moment. I promise I will seek you out when I'm ready."
Eugene wanted to protest more, but he felt Adira gently led him out of the room. "Let's give him moment." She whispered to the prince. "I promise, we'll see him again soon."
Eugene nodded at Adira and followed as she and the others left his father's bedchamber.
After Leaving King Edmund's bedroom, they all decided to gather in the library again.
"Should we tell the King that it was Gothel who led Rapunzel to the Moonstone chamber?" Varian asked once they all settled in the library.
"I think it would be best if we don't." Quirin suggested. "I don't think he can handle the idea of his wife possibly betraying the Dark Kingdom."
Hector scoffed. "He's going to find out sooner or later. There have been rumors about what Gothel and Princess Cassandra have done."
"Rumors?" Rapunzel asked.
"I hate to say it, but he's right." Lance added. "I mean, Seeing Cassandra run off with the Moonstone and causing the Black Rocks to go away isn't something that can be easily overlooked."
"That, and its not like Gothel was very popular here." Hector added. "Honestly, most of the rumors are more about Gothel than Princess Cassandra. So, I say we tell him before he hears the rumors and thinks things are worse than they already are."
"I suppose that's true." Quirin agreed. "But for now, let's wait until he's ready to listen. After what we already told him, he may need some time before we tell him more."
Adira nodded. "I agree."
Then Eugene spoke. "Speaking of Gothel, any clue on where she might've gone."
Adira shook her head. "No, we've checked through her personal things, but there is nothing that could tell use where she might've gone."
"I think we might be going at the this the wrong way." Hector stated. "If Gothel was willing to lure Princess Rapunzel to the Moonstone chamber, then she might be willing to follow Princess Cassandra after she took the Moonstone."
"So, if we can find Cass and where she's going, we might be able to find Gothel." Eugene realized.
"And since she has the moonstone, she'll probably need to learn how to control its power." Varian added. "Maybe even look for more of the Demanitus Scroll. So, if we can located placed that were significant to Demanitus, that might lead us to not only Cass and Gothel, but to the rest of the scroll."
"Let's hope that's true." Quirin said. "Varian, you and Hector should look over some of the maps we have. Try to figure out where Princess Cassandra might go."
Varian nodded. "Will do, Dad."
"Eugene, you should let the citizens know that about King Edmund's health." Adira suggested. "Lance and I will join you to make sure things don't get out of hand."
Eugene didn't seem to like that idea. "Are you sure its not too soon?"
"We need to tell them now." Adira replied. "And it might soothe some of their concerns if they hear their king has recovered."
"I'll stay here to keep an eye on him." Quirin assured.
Eugene thought about it for a moment. Then he nodded. "Alright, I guess that sounds like a good idea." He then turned to Rapunzel. "Would you like to join us, Rapunzel? You can even bring your frog with us."
Rapunzel smiled wide. "I'd love to! I've always wanted to go see the city!"
Eugene chuckled. "Alright, then. Everyone, let's get to work."
"This is going to be great, Pascal." Rapunzel told Pascal as he sat on her shoulders. Pascal just nodded at the blond princess.
"Don't get to excited, Princess." Adira warned. "We are going through some repairs, so it may not be wonderful as you think it will be."
Rapunzel frowned a bit. "Oh, right." But she shortly gave a small smile. "Still, it would be nice to see more of the Dark Kingdom. All I've seen is the church and the castle."
"If we have time, I'll show you around." Eugene offered.
"Let's just focus on the task at hand before discussing more." Adira advised them.
The group were walking from the castle and to the city. Rapunzel noted how much different traveling to the capital city in the Dark Kingdom was compared to Corona. While the Corona's capital city was practically just outside the castle, the Dark Kingdom's castle was further away, not too far, but Rapunzel couldn't ignore that there was some distance between the castle and the capital city.
When they arrived to the city, Rapunzel took a moment to look around. While there were no more rocks poking out in the city streets, the damaged caused still remained, as there were large cracks in the ground and some of the buildings had signs of just starting to repair. Rapunzel's heart ached for the people who had to endure this.
Eventually, some of the citizens noticed Eugene and began to approach him, only to be stopped by Lance and Adira. Rapunzel watched as citizens bombarded the prince with questions.
"Can everyone be silent for a moment? I have an announcement to make." Eugene asked, raising his voice so the citizens could hear him. And eventually the people went quiet as they anxiously waiting for Eugene to speak. "First of all, I am pleased to declare that King Edmund has recovered and we suspect he will be able to resume his duties as king soon."
Rapunzel smiled as the people cheered at the news, and she was impressed with how well Eugene was able to address the people.
Then a villager spoke up. "Eugene, what about Princess Cassandra?"
Eugene frowned at that. "Excuse me?"
"Everyone's talking about how she took the moonstone and the rocks away." The villager added. "Does that mean we're finally safe?"
"Or is she planning something worse?" Another villager added.
Then another person spoke. "This is all that witch's fault, isn't it? Gothel wanted this to happen!"
Then more and more spoke up until they were arguing amongst themselves, trying to figure out who is to blame for all of this. Just as it looked like Adira and Lance would have to try and settle the people before things got out of hand, Rapunzel decided to join in.
"Enough!" Rapunzel sternly ordered. The silenced everyone immediately. Everyone was surprised at Rapunzel's tone, even Rapunzel herself, but she continued to speak. "While it is true that Princess Cassandra and Royal Consort Gothel are missing, we don't know enough to make any serious accusations."
Then Eugene spoke again. "Exactly. I know none of us are truly fond of Gothel, we cannot make any accusations at her without proof. And as for Cassandra, whatever she is doing, I can say with certain that she would never do anything to hurt the Dark Kingdom."
"How do you know that?" A villager challenged, clearly not believing what was being said.
Eugene glared at the villager. "Because Cassandra is one the most, if not the most, dedicated person to the Dark Kingdom. Everything she's ever done, it was for the well-being of this kingdom, which includes you."
That managed to silence the rather rude citizen.
And Eugene didn't stop. "You all remember everything Princess Cassandra has done for this Kingdom, such as when she personally aided the farms when pests were eating the crops. You can't just forget about all the good she's done just because of this. A situation that isn't even her fault."
There was another moment of silence amongst the crowd, but Rapunzel could tell that what Eugene said had gotten to them.
"We will discuss more later. For now, continue what you were doing." Eugene concluded, and the crowd disbanded, going back to whatever they were doing before the small group had arrived.
Adira smiled. "You handled the situation very well, Eugene. And you weren't so bad either, Princess."
Rapunzel smiled. "You think so?"
"Are you kidding? You two were great!" Lance said with a grin. "You managed to calm them down before something crazy happened, and Eugene, way to shut that one guy up."
Eugene chuckled. "Thanks. Sorry this isn't how you imagine the city, Rapunzel."
"Its alright." Rapunzel assured. "But since the Black Rocks are gone, I'm sure it won't be long before this place is as good as new."
"Eugene, why don't you show Rapunzel around some more?" Adira suggested. "I need to set up patrols and Lance has been slacking off, so I'm going to need him for a while."
Lance groaned. "Aww, do I have to?"
"She has a point, Lance." Eugene chuckled. "After all, you are supposedly a guard in training."
Lance whined again, but followed as Adira led him back to the castle.
Eugene then turned to Rapunzel and offered his arm. "Shall we?"
Rapunzel smiled and took his arm. "We shall."
