Soft coos and warm humming filled the Son kitchen as Chi-Chi stood with her newborn baby in the sink. She looked down in awe at her darling boy. "Hi Goten," Chi-Chi sang as she gently rubbed the sleepy infant's stomach. Goten was fully relaxed in his mother's arms as he gave soft grunting noises of satisfaction.
It had already been a few weeks and his cord finally came off. Her baby boy was finally ready for his first bath. With Gohan off training with Piccolo and her father on a diplomatic trip, she knew this was the perfect time to have this precious moment with her son. She smiled at his little face as he curled his mouth in a little O. She could not help to admire how her son was the spitting image of his father. Goten was his last gift to her.
She was so in awe that she did not notice the gentle knocks at the door. With haste, she quickly wrapped her startled newborn in a soft towel before he could muster a cry. "Who is it," she asked as she rocked her son in her arms. She looked through the peephole to see a familiar set of blue eyebrows.
"Open up, it's me Chi-Chi," Bulma said. Chi-Chi slowly creaked the door open not wanting to break the rhythm that gave her son comfort. She smiled when she saw her friend's bright-eyed baby bouncing in his mother's arms.
"Oh Goten, I think your future friend is here." Chi-Chi sang as she smiled at Trunks.
"Oh, I know they will be the best of friends." Bulma entered the cozy home carrying her son and a large shopping bag.
"Bulma, what is that?"
"Oh, hush. You'll see soon enough!"
"I told you I was fine, I did not need anything."
"Nonsense. Besides, it's not for you. It's for little Goku Jr."
"He has a name now, Goten."
"Oh, that's beautiful." Bulma smiled at the spitting image of her late friend as his mother rocked him in her arms. There was something so comforting when she looked into his little face. It made her heart cry and smile at the same time. She wondered how his mother felt looking at the face of her late husband all over again.
Bulma sat trunks down on the couch. He was finally able to sit up on his own without too much trouble. She handed her son a toy to keep him occupied before reaching for the younger demi Sayian. "Let me see him, give 'em here."
Chi-Chi happily handed over Goten to Bulma. Her old friend had been so helpful for the past few months. She attended appointments with Chi-Chi and managed to convince her to try some Lamaze classes. She would be lying if she said she did not need the comfort of a friend during this lonely time. No one prepared her for how it would feel to give birth without him.
"We were just getting started on his first bath," Chi-Chi admitted as she took a seat next to Trunks. She laughed when the tiny boy reached for her bosom as if he wanted to latch on to her.
"Oh Trunks," his mom groaned "You are already being a bad friend. That's Goten's food. Plus, you don't even drink from the fountain of boob anymore kid." Both women laughed as Trunks babbled in response to his mother airing out his business. Bulma managed to catch her breath as she gave a head nod to her friend. "Well, go ahead. Open it."
"If you insist," Chi-Chi huffed. She knew the woman meant well, but Chi-Chi did not want anyone thinking she was in need at this time. She had been managing well with selling baked goods and help from her father. The last thing she wanted to do was be a charity case to her friends. She reluctantly grabbed the bag. It was heavy and filled to the brim with various shiny objects. The first thing she reached for was a digital camera. "Oh Bulma," she sighed as she read over the fancy Capsule Corp packaging.
"That's the newest model, best on the market. You can take pictures and record videos of the boys. I noticed you still have that rinky-dink one from years ago." Bulma smiled seeing her friend's face light up. "Keep going, there is more."
Chi-Chi reached into the bag once more pulling out a few capsules with different labels. One read baby bouncer, another high chair, and many more. "Bulma!" Chi-Chi looked on at her friend in disbelief.
"Hey, they are all made by the company, it's nothing really."
Chi-Chi reached into the bag to pull out three envelopes. The first one she opened happened to be some sort of card to a grocery store. Her stomach dropped when she looked at the limit written on the card. It was 1,200,000 Zeni. "Bulma… no absolutely not," Chi-Chi said, fighting the urge to cry.
"Oh, it's no biggie. We did their security system for their store chain and they sent me a bunch of those. There should be another one at the bottom of the bag. You have two hungry Saiyans to feed now girly" Bulma said as she rocked the now sleeping baby.
Chi-Chi took a deep swallow as she readied herself to open the next envelope. This envelope was a bit bigger. She took her time to slowly remove the folded paper. She was almost in disbelief as she read the black and white truth. She did not even try to stop the tears that started rolling down her face. "Bulma… what is this?" Chi-Chi looked to her friend for clarification only to be met with a teary set of blue eyes.
"It's just what it says. A CD for Gohan's college education. His is a bit heftier than Goten's because it won't have as much time to mature. There should be enough for him to go to whatever school he pleases."
"But why?"
"Well, thanks to you, I get to see a part of my friend live on in both of your boys. You are so great with them. It's the least I can do as a thank you for all of the grand adventures Goku gave me over the years."
"Oh, Bulma."
The two women sat and chatted as Chi-Chi opened more gifts for her and the boys when she suddenly remembered she had a half bathed infant. "Oh before you go," she said, "Do you mind filming Goten's first bath for me? I thought it was something I wanted to do alone, but you being here with me right now made me change my mind."
"Of course I can," Bulma said as she handed over the sleeping bundle to its mother.
Goten's first bath was nothing like Gohan's. She did not have her curious loud husband standing over her shoulder to film and ask a bunch of questions. She did have the comfort of a friend who wanted her to know she was not alone.
Bulma watched in awe as the mini Goku gave nothing but smiles and soft coos during his first bath. She smiled as she captured her friend's beaming face as she gently cleaned her pride and joy.
"Bulma," she said softly as she faced the camera.
"Yeah, Chi-Chi."
"Thank you for coming to check on me. This was perfect"
"Any time."
