What would have happened if Nick had not accepted Judy's apology?

When Judy arrived in Zootopia she immediately made it her goal to find the lurid van that belonged to Finnick. She still didn't know where Nick might be, but she knew where his best friend was. True to her prediction, she headed to the east side of town where she had last seen his car parked. She wasn't wrong this time either - on one of the streets there was a red car on the side of the road, as if it was hidden. Rabbit parked her car opposite it and without looking at anything she quickly ran over to Finnick's car. She knocked on the red steel door, where a moment later a small fox appeared holding a baseball bat in his hands, ready to strike.

"I'm out!" He growled aggressively, but quickly changed his tone when he saw Judy. He didn't hide his surprise, staring at her until she said something.

"I need to find Nick. Can you help me, please ?" Asked Judy holding her hands crossed in a basket.

"Nick is probably sitting under the bridge by the abandoned factory as he always does...he always does when he's not happy" replied Finnick.

"oh, thank you!" Replied Judy excitedly walking back to her car. She drove off so fast that Finnick didn't even have time to answer anything for her, she was already far ahead rushing within reason to Nick. Even though she had the whole conversation prepared in her head she was still stressing about meeting him. She knew she had hurt him badly, she was ashamed to look him in the face even though she had to do it. She guessed that without his help she would not be able to solve a case that was already practically settled.

After ten minutes, Judy arrived at the place Finnick had mentioned. She stopped over a stone bridge under an old, abandoned factory. Already from the car Judy spotted a red figure sitting under the bridge. She automatically guessed that it was Nick, who was carelessly reclining in his chair as if sunbathing. She stopped at the side of the road and walked down to Nick trying to get his attention , beeping.

"How glad I am to see you Nick! I think I already know what's going on with these predators! Someone is specially giving them a special serum under the force of which they are all going wild!" Explained Judy quickly while gesturing with hand movements. Nick's reaction was actually similar to the one Judy had assumed. The fox stood up slowly as if nothing had happened and headed towards the tunnel that was implemented in the wall.

"Wow, very interesting," chuckled Nick coolly. Judy, however, was not giving up. She wanted to seize the opportunity, to throw everything at one chance.

"Nick, wait!" Judy called out. The fox stopped a few feet away, didn't turn around, listened.

"I...I know you won't forgive me, that I hurt you deeply...but I don't want other people to suffer for my faults. I need you to help me, I can't cope without you...and then when it's all over...you can forget about me, you'll be right all the time, and you always have been...that I'm just a stupid rabbit..." Said Judy almost crying by now. Her emotions had gotten the best of her to such an extent that crystalline tears began to fall from her crocus eyes. Nick sighed heavily, which got Judy's attention. He slowly turned towards the rabbit. Judy got her hopes up that he would forgive her, but his cold expression didn't indicate that.

"Listen Judy..." Nick began as he walked over to her and bent down to make eye contact with her.

"I'm glad you realised your mistake...but...but I can't help you" sighed Nick which surprised the rabbit.

"What ? What do you mean, after all..."

"I know, it was fun, but I can't help you. When you said it was our fault, that it was our genes that caused me to remember something I shouldn't have remembered long ago... do you think it feels good for us, for me, when everyone points out to me that I'm a fox? That I can't be trusted? Pff...anyway, you've shown yourself that you don't trust me" Nick sighed. Judy lowered her head down in shame. Nick was right, she had shown herself that she didn't trust for fox, even though they had gone through a fun adventure together.

"Nick..."

"I'm sorry Judy, but I can't...I wish you the best of luck with this" replied Nick slowly turning away from Judy. The rabbit still tried to stop him, but it was to no avail. The fox, however, paused for a moment taking a pen out of his pocket - the same one he had received from Judy as part of the fulfilment of his contract.

"Here, I don't think I need it for anything anymore," Nick added giving it to Judy's paws. After that he didn't stop again and walked off in his own direction.

Judy was left alone. She didn't know what to do. She can't do much on her own, she doesn't have any evidence, and the commandant won't assign anyone to her unless she finds material to back up her predictions, and she's too weak on her own. She didn't know where else to look for clues, only Nick could help her in this situation. Fox, however, can't forgive her for looking at race. Only now did she notice what a mistake she had made. She had an almost perfect partner for police work next to her, and through her stupidity and pride she had squandered that opportunity.

Judy still stood still for a few moments as she watched Nick slowly disappear into the distance without even intending to stop or anything like that. The rabbit still tried to stop him, but those attempts were unsuccessful, which left Judy even more depressed. All she had left was the pen she had used to blackmail Nick a few days earlier. She let go of the tape, there was still her recording, which was evidence in Nick's tax fraud case. After a few moments of thought, Judy deleted the recording, she wouldn't need it anymore. In its place, Judy recorded her own new recording:

"Listen Nick, I know I hurt you a lot, but you need to know that I didn't mean it. I didn't think through the consequences of my words, and now I know how you feel. I'm leaving you this pen, in case you need it."

After recording the message, Judy placed the writing object under the recliner on which Nick was lying. From what his friend had told him he often stayed here, so the rabbit was sure he would read the message and take the object in...or not. For her it was already indifferent, she wanted to get it over with.

"I have no proof, I have no partner...and I can't do it alone...it's probably time to go home " thought Judy. Although she wanted to help for Zootopia, unfortunately she couldn't. With no strength to do anything, Judy got into her car and drove away.

Epilogue

When Judy returned to her house, she was not at all cheerful. She parked by the house and got out of the car calmly heading for the door. When she stepped inside she was displeased to see her parents in the kitchen, again she would have to explain where she was and what she was doing.

"Oh, you're back! And how, did you do what you wanted?" Bonnie asked, to which Judy nodded with a small shake of her head.

"Yeah..." Added Judy quietly.

"I know that voice Judy, something didn't go your way. What happened?" Stuu asked.

"It's just that some things can't be fixed anymore, even if you want to very much. I wanted to fix something, but unfortunately it turned out not to be possible. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going upstairs to my place..." Replied Judy walking up the stairs to her room. This answer worried Bonnie and Stuu, who looked at each other with a look that signified concern.

"We'll talk to her later " said Bonnie seeing Stuu wanting to follow her daughter. Judy meanwhile locked herself in her room, turned on the radio and lay down on her bed wanting to relax a little. Unfortunately, she couldn't because the radio broadcast was going on with news of more predator wildlife. Judy turned off the radio and this time lay down on her bed cuddling into her pillow. She fell into a deep sleep.
