Chapter 7: Sleepover
It was one of the rare moments that the girls had days off at the same time and they'd decided to spend it together catching up. It took a lot of convincing from her but eventually Hiashi gave in and allowed Hinata to have Tenten, Sakura and Ino over for a sleepover.
The sun had just set when the girls were sitting outside after having dinner, enjoying the cool breeze, a welcome relief from the summer heat.
One of Tenten's hair ties had snapped.
"Shoot. You guys wouldn't happen to have an extra hair tie would you?" she asked her friends after she picked up the now snapped band from the floor. But none of them had one with them. And then an idea came to her mind, there was one other person here that she knew would have one for her. She went to their room to be sure she didn't have a spare and when she was proven right she walked to Neji's room. She called for him but there was no response and when she opened the door, it was empty. Knowing him, he was probably still out training. She walked further into his room.
For as long as they'd known each other, Tenten had never actually been in his room before, despite him having been to her place plenty of times. It was like his second home basically but for Tenten being here, it was a new experience. It was just as she expected it to be, neat and simple. His bed was to the corner by the wall, his desk was near the window and his dressing cupboard was near the door. The walls were white and grey and had a calming effect. It took her a moment to realise that his room smelled just like him and she couldn't help but feel comforted by that, and she definitely couldn't help the smile that appeared on her face. It was like his arms were around her.
She'd found a few sitting on his desk but something else caught her eye as well. It was a small wooden box, and when she looked inside she was touched at what she was. He'd really kept every single hair tie she'd given him since they were children. Memories of those times washed over her as she counted them out with a nostalgic smile. Neji Hyuuga really was something.
Realising she'd been gone longer than intended, she took one of the hair ties, tied up her hair and went back to the girls.
"You were gone a while. Did you find another hair tie?" Sakura asked as Tenten joined them again.
"Turns out I didn't have a spare with me so I borrowed one of Neji's."
"You were in his room?" Hinata asked and Tenten nodded.
"Relax Hinata, I'm sure Neji will be thrilled to know his wife was in his room."
"His what?" Tenten asked with a smirk and they all laughed.
A while later they decided to call it a night and went to bed. All of them settled in Hinata's spacious room, comfortable and in their blankets they fell asleep. It was after one a.m. when Tenten woke up. She quietly slipped out of the room and headed to the kitchen but on her way back she saw a light was on. It was Neji's room. She saw him sitting on the wooden floorboards outside and went to join him.
"You're still up, Neji?" she asked as she walked over to where he was sitting and sat next to him.
"I could say the same of you, you know."
"I just needed a glass of water, what's your excuse for being up so late?"
"I couldn't sleep. I've been thinking about us a lot. Honestly, I don't think anyone deserves you."
"Does that include you?" she genuinely asked.
"To a degree. I'm aware of how lucky I am to have you."
"And I'm lucky to have you as well, as a best friend and boyfriend. And I'd be more than happy to sing your praises right now at the top of my lungs." She laughed.
"While I don't doubt you, it's after one a.m. So it's better if you didn't, for everyone's sake." He smirked before they both laughed. A comfortable silence fell over them as they looked at the stars together.
"I'm not sure where this sudden introspection is coming from but, you really are the perfect guy for me, Neji." She said confidently "I wouldn't want to be with anyone else. And I'd like to think that I'm the perfect girl for you. Who else is going to argue with you so fiercely but also understand you without you having to say a single word to me?"
He thought over her words. Everything she said was correct. She was really like no one else. Even when they didn't agree or when they were upset with each other, Tenten always saw the best in him. She truly understood him.
"You know…" he started, suddenly feeling like sharing his feelings. He couldn't quite place why he felt like being open right now, maybe it was the timing, the fact that everyone else was asleep, it felt like the world belonged to them at the moment. "A part of me still worries about you whenever you leave on a solo mission."
Tenten raised a brow and waited for him to continue.
"It's not because I doubt your skills but rather…" his shoulders slumped and Tenten worried a little. This wasn't the first time she'd seen him like this. For the past week or so Neji had seemed quite down or like something was weighing heavy on him. She didn't want to force an answer out of him so she waited for him to open up and now seemed to be the time. "I worry that you won't come back to me."
"What makes you say that?"
"Having you in my life feels too good to be true. Will I wake up one day and you'll be gone? Am I really dating this amazing person?"
Tenten was surprised at his words. She didn't think this was where their conversation was headed.
"Neji," she sat in his lap and put her arms around him. "We've known each other since we were kids, I've seen you grow and change. I've seen your good times and bad ones too and I love being with you and having you with me. I have no intention of ever leaving, for the rest of our lives." She pulled him into a kiss and felt his arms go around her. He agreed with her as he kissed her. He never wanted to leave her side either, she meant way too much to him.
He wanted to love and protect her for as long as he could.
Man I really love these two, don't you just love them too? *sigh* we were so robbed of NejiTen but anyways, hope you enjoyed it!
Well that's it from me-
