Well, That Happened
Hi my name is MaryAnn Preston; well, I was when I was alive. You see I died like five minutes ago. How did I die you might wonder well ...? I got bitten by a snake.
See I lived in Australia where snakes are plenty so when I went to bed, I just climbed in like usual and felt a stinging sensation in my leg. Pulled back the blankets and there it was: a Tiger Snake. A few minutes later I was in the car on the way to the hospital. Everything went black and then I get a fleeting glimpse of my body before being pulled into nothing.
Ok so it wasn't nothing but a waiting room. It looked like a cross between an airport waiting room and a doctors surgery's waiting room. It was crowded with people just standing around crying and staring into space. The large windows looking out onto a beautiful view of space.
As I stood in front of the windows looking out at the galaxies below, I slowly started to think about my death. I thought about my friends and family, and about all the things I would never do. I'd never get a job or my license, never get married or have kids. Hell, I died a virgin. I'd never get drunk or go to another party. Tears flowed down my face as I thought about what my friends and family would be feeling.
"MaryAnn Preston" a voice behind me called.
I turned to look at the person. It was a man of about forty with brown hair and blue eyes. He was thin but not in a gangly way more like a swimmer's body. His eyes held warmth and sympathy within.
"Yes"
"I'm Tony, a death consultant. Please come with me to my office"
Surprised I followed him down a long hallway for about five minutes till we reached a door with his name embossed upon it. He opened the door and strode across the room sitting in a leather office chair gazing at me across the desk.
Walking further into the room I decide to look around. The room is pretty cool. I mean it's definitely an office but it has a large wall full of books in a mahogany bookshelf. His desk was cluttered with files and a top-of-the-line computer.
Sitting down I look into his expectant face.
"MaryAnn to put it bluntly what the hell are you doing here?" he spoke.
"Um, I'm dead" I answered.
"Well duh I am aware of that but it wasn't your time. You were supposed to die at the age a hundred a three beside your husband one Jake Black, having had ten kids, thirty-two grandkids, seventy-one great-grand kids and fifteen great-great-grandkids." he said with frustration.
"Woah that's a lot of kids. I didn't put that snake in my bed, did I? No, I didn't so don't blame me!" I exclaimed.
"True, Sorry, it's just that the paperwork is a nightmare for deaths before their time. Let's see, ah amazing! You have been given a choice. This usually doesn't happen; we would usually just shunt you back into your body.
Now you have five choices. One, you may go back to your body and continue on as you have been. Two, you may go back to the moment of your birth with all memories intact and change your future. Three, you may be reborn as someone else in this world. Oh, by the way there are an infinite number of universes in existence. Four you may go on to the afterlife. And five you may be reborn into another universe as a fate changer.
A fate changer may go to up to a hundred universes before they are allowed into the afterlife. What is your choice?" he proclaimed.
I stared at him as I thought of my choices. Well, going to the afterlife was out as was going back to my body and continuing on as I had been. There were far better options. Thinking upon it some more I cast the choice of going back to my moment of birth to change my life for the other two options which were far better.
Finally, I made my choice.
"I'll take the choice as fate changer" I stated confidently.
"Are you sure? Once the choice is made there is no going back." he questioned.
"I'm sure" I answered.
"Very well, let us see what options we have to help you as fate changer." he flicked threw a folder humming slightly as he went.
"Well to help you, you have been granted the opportunity to have seven abilities. Seven being a strong number. You get to pick your abilities but keep in mind once a choice is made you can't take it back and you will be stuck with it until you are given leave to move onto the afterlife." he warned.
I thought about it long and hard tossing up the pros and cons of different abilities. Finally, after about two hours I had decided upon seven.
" Let's see I want the gamer ability, fiction adaption ability, adoptive muscle memory, enhanced senses, psychometry, empathy and shapeshifting." I smiled at him.
"Excellent choices Miss Preston. Let's see you will be born with your current memories in a preselected world. You will know it either through movie or book. Do you understand this?" he read looking up as he asked the question.
"Yes, I do" grinned nervously fidgeting in excitement.
"Great then good luck Fate Changer" he stated.
Then everything went black.
