Chapter Five

Draco had immediately left the floor when a crowd had started to form in front of Granger's office. The loud noise of Ronald Weasley echoed through the halls, and even though he wanted to stand up for Granger, and more importantly himself, he did not want to make matters worse. He knew most thought it was ridiculous that the Hermione Granger was doing Draco Malfoy a solid.

And she had done him a solid. She had been so amazing in the meeting. She was smart, well-rehearsed, knew exactly how to make the right arguments to persuade everyone. Almost everyone. There were still enough wizards who were doubting Draco's motive to become an Auror, and that meant there was still work to be done before Draco could start mending the wounds of his family.

On his way out of the ministry building there was a mixture of pleasantries and scolding. Draco chose to ignore the scolding and focused on those who were actually approaching him with some sort of positive small talk. There were, surprisingly, many witches quite obviously trying to flirt with him and a handful of wizards wanting to know what his ideas were, if he were to become an Auror in the ministry. But none of that seemed to matter as a flash of brown hair caught his eyes.

"Granger hold up!" He easily caught up with her, even though she was marching furiously out of the place. As he grabbed her arm, the petite girl in front of him turned quickly on her heels. "Malfoy, now is really not the time." Her face was all red with fury and her brown eyes glazed, she looked like she was about to cry. Crying girls were not really a strong suit with him. Draco mentally told himself to let go of her arm, but for some reason he just could not let go. "I am sorry for the trouble I am causing you Granger," he softly said. She shook her head and let out an exaggerated sigh, "please don't do that. It is not your responsibility to make sure other people aren't acting like childish assholes!" Draco finally let go of her arm and Granger sighed heavily as she grabbed her sides. "I will talk to you later Malfoy…" And with that she had left.

Draco would be the first to admit that many friends were not something he had. He had never had a need for that company or that empty approval which he had craved to a certain point during his school years. Many moons ago he had realised that most friendships were based on fake expectations and selfish achievements. And no one ever really listened anyway when a crazy man needed to vent.

Not that he didn't want to have someone to turn to, but that was something he was supposed to have had in a wife. A wife to have an eternal friendship with, a partnership, someone to always confide in - that was what his mother had drilled into his head from his early teenage years. And for years he had a prospect, someone his parents hadn't approved of, which had made Draco like her even more. Astoria Greengrass was now in a loving relationship with Theodore Nott, and Draco was content that she had found happiness with Theo. After dating for a handful of years Astoria could not endure Draco's post-war self-destruction and continuous battle with pureblood status and a criminal family. He hadn't blamed her - and he had almost been the one paving the way for her future relationship with Theo.

The two were sitting in front of him in his small city apartment looking grossly in love. So grossly in love that Draco couldn't help but draw a small smile in front of them. "So, my friend," Theodore started, "you have really caused quite a riot in the Ministry haven't you now?" They all chuckled a bit at this comment. "As the Head of Auror Office I shouldn't say this, but it is quite exciting actually, the place has been so boring the past months." Theodore took a sip of his tea in front of him. Draco smiled and stirred his cup. "I honestly don't know if I am insane. After the other day I don't feel like I have the biggest chances." Astoria reached out and put a delicate hand on his wrist. "That is nonsense Draco, and you know it. Everyone at this table knows how amazing this opportunity is for you, and how much you want it."

The dark blonde girl smiled at him, and he sighed. "Even though that is true, Ria, I am not sure that is enough." Draco gave her a weak smile and then stretched his arms behind his head. "Now on to something else than my probably soon-to-be failure. How is it going with you two? Have you settled into your house yet?" The couple had recently moved into a nice villa in the countryside but had yet to celebrate the move. Theodore gave Astoria a gentle smile and then turned to Draco. "Well actually we have some news to share with you Draco, we uhm…" Theodore grew quiet as if he couldn't really put words to his news. "Yes?" Draco encouraged, having most likely guessed it already. "We are expecting." Astoria finished.

Genuine laughter filled Draco as he stood from the table and reached towards his friends. "This is wonderful news! You two are going to make wonderful parents." However, he couldn't ignore the minor pang of jealousy and regret. He swallowed it, and with it, a bit of his pride as Theodore grabbed his hands, "thank you my friend. You were the first we wanted to share this with." Draco knew this was Theo's way of telling him that he wasn't risking anyone badmouthing Astoria for having gone straight from Draco to his closest friend. What this world had become.

As Astoria pulled away from him to sit back down next to Theo, she looked at Draco carefully and then said: "I really hope you find the happiness you deserve Draco". She tugged a brown curl behind her ear and then rested the same hand on her stomach. "I know I couldn't be the partner you needed, nor could you be mine, but I want to see you smile like you just did more often." Draco was lost for words and looked down. However hard it was to see them together or however jealous he was of what they shared, he couldn't help but feel a complete devotion to being the best friend to them, just because of how Astoria still treated him. "Thank you, Ria, I really don't deserve this from you, but I do appreciate it."

"Pft," it came from Theo, "Draco, you deserve our friendship just as much as we deserve yours." Three glasses were conjured with a flick from Theo's wrist and then two bottles came floating towards them. "Now let's toast to the fact that I will most likely become your boss in the near future!" Draco poured Theo and himself a glass of Firewhiskey while Theo poured Astoria a glass of pumpkin juice. "If someone doesn't kill me first," Draco toasted with humour. Theo raised his brow at Draco, "they would have to get through Granger first, and Merlin knows that woman is fiery as hell!" They clinked their glasses, and Draco thought of his encounter with a certain brunette mere days before, and decided he had to address their situation as soon as possible.

Looking at the golden plate stating, 'Deputy Head of Department of Magical Law Enforcement', he did not know why he couldn't open the door in front of him. Opening a door should be so easy. Entering the room and working on what he had wanted for years, was now closer in his reach than it had been in a very long time. But it seemed that this door, now, entailed many more problems than he had first anticipated. Was there time to back out? There was. But what would that tell the world? That he was the biggest coward to walk this earth? That nothing had changed in the past, and that he was incapable of changing himself? He was spiralling and he knew it. For no reason! Or was there a reason? Was the very reason behind this very door-

"You have a lot of nerves showing up here." Oh great. Just what he needed - a punching bag. Draco turned to face the weasel who had snug up upon him. "Are we really doing this here Weasel?" It was actually kind of hilarious how red Ronald Weasley's entire being became when he was near Draco. "The only 'weasel' here is you... Malfoy!" The last part was spat in Draco's face, and even though he knew he should be more offended and angrier at this comment, the whole thing just seemed more pathetic than anything else, and incredibly humorous, which unfortunately made him snicker. "I am sure you can do better than that Weasel." Draco knew he was pushing the limits here, but this was the most entertainment he had had in a while. Unfortunately, the redheaded man had a deep grudge against him which meant action. Weasley had his wand in Draco's face within seconds, and Draco actually had to admit that the clumsy boy, who had broken his wand with a backfiring hex, was far gone. "Malfoy, you better get away from this office, you have no right to be seeking her help. You have no-"

"No what, Ronald?" Her voice was calm but icy. "Please get out of my face and leave your nose out of this matter." She opened her office door further so both men could see her. "You have every opportunity to voice your opinions at the planned meetings, but you are not to bother Draco nor me with your petty problems at any other time." Draco noticed Weasley flinching when Granger said Draco. This was golden. "Do you have time to discuss some matters regarding my case, Hermione?" He knew he was playing with fire, but it was just too easy. And Weasley's reaction to Draco using Granger's name was priceless. "Of course, come in." Draco moved to pass her going into her office but had to catch himself as her caramel scent intoxicated him. Her voice drew him out of his momentary coma, and he moved himself. "Goodbye Ronald, you have nothing to say about me in any capacity unless I am physically trying to hurt you… which I haven't... yet." Draco did not hear what Weasley said following that as she closed the door immediately after.

As the brunette witch scampered in front of him trying to get her things in order, he pondered. Was the reason for him wanting to chicken out right there in front of him? It was a silly notion. She knew what she had gotten herself into when she had decided to help him. He hadn't chosen her! He had simply requested a case be done for him, and someone had accepted those terms. Secretly he had hoped Theo would have been the one to take his case, but of course Nott had only recently gotten himself in good graces and made Head of Auror Office. No, only a senior official would have been assigned to this or voluntarily taken it, as it seemed she had done. So why? Why was he feeling like he was doing something wrong?

"Please take a seat Malfoy," her voice made him snap his head towards her where he saw her gesturing to the visitors' chairs in front of her desk. He nodded and took a seat, crossing his legs as he leaned back. "I am very sorry about… that," she gestured to the door and Draco had to lift his brow in confusion. Did she really think it was her fault that her ex was behaving like a complete idiot and trying to be possessive over something that was clearly not his? "Please Granger," he started, "do not try and take blame for Weasley's inability to respect office decorum". Draco folded his hands in his lap and studied Granger's face as it reacted to his words. Defeat. That was the closest he could come to defining her expression.

With a sigh of defeat, Granger rested her chin on her hands, "I think it has become a habit of mine," she admitted, and Draco tilted his head. "Even so, you really shouldn't do so. He needs to learn to deal with his opinions and…" Draco searched for the right word, "...emotions outside the office space." He shifted in anticipation of his following words: "no matter how much he hates me, and still loves you." Her eyes were staring into his, a wave of emotion enriched the hazel brown colour of her round orbs, before they slowly dropped to her hands. "It is still difficult for me to be around him," she admitted, "a part of me will always love him even though he broke my heart." The last part was almost a whisper and Draco leaned forward. "I understand," he whispered back before clearing his throat, "I guess I will always love Astoria as well, even though I know that she and Nott are happier than she and I ever would have been." The hazel wave of emotions shifted again; this time her eyes were filled with a vulnerability he had rarely ever seen in a person. "Malfoy…" she started but seemed to catch herself before she continued.

Draco was watching her with a guarded look. He knew what was coming, it was the whole reason he had come to her office himself this day, yet now that it was happening, he felt torn. "Even though I know I was the one who sought you out…" she was looking slightly embarrassed, a crimson colour spreading on her cheeks. "I think the fall out of us being…" she was looking for the right words. "Involved?" Draco suggested with a slight smirk on his face. She looked at him and her lips curved slightly, "yes, involved, would hurt your case more than I would like to admit." Draco raised his hands as to pause her, "I know Granger, it is why I came here today." He uncrossed his legs and leaned forward. "I won't lie to you, obviously I enjoyed myself a lot," the crimson on cheeks shone brighter at his words, "but as we both know, this case is very important to me, and I know your job is important to you as well."

The brown orbs filled with that same vulnerability again, as she looked at Draco before finding the words. "Each day I am surer about my decision to help you, Malfoy." She finally said with a smile tugged on her lips, which made Draco's lips curl slightly as well. "I appreciate that Granger, you are really giving me an opportunity here, and I won't take it for granted." He rose from his chair, and she got up as well. They walked towards the door to her office and Draco reached for the handle. He felt her delicate hand on his arm and turned to face her, "I do not regret what happened between us," she looked at him curiously, "and I hope you do not either." Draco took her hand from his arm and brushed his lips against her knuckles briefly. "Not a chance Granger, you got some wicked moves." And with a wink from him and a rosy-cheeked look from her, he left.

As Draco reached the apparition point outside the foyer of the ministry he paused, did he actually want to head home by himself? He thought of apparating to see Theo and Astoria but thought against it as he assumed they would probably prefer to be in their bliss of expecting. There was always the Zabini residence, it had been a while since he had seen Blaise and Pansy. But as he thought more about that, Draco realised that he wasn't sure if they had returned from their travels in Europe, they had begun some months ago after Pansy had given birth to their son William. No, he would probably have to go home by himself and be left alone with his thoughts, however terrifying that was.

He had never meant to sleep with Granger. The night they had first run into each other, had been surprisingly pleasant, and he had for a moment forgotten who he was, who she was, what their past entailed. He had completely forgotten it to the extent where he had let her kiss him goodnight. He knew he could have prevented it by kissing her cheek, he was raised properly after all, but her scent had lured him in. And now three weeks later, he was still being lured in. The petty schoolboy inside him was cursing him for having let things go this far, but the man, the man that he actually was, told him that he had found a spark. A spark that was worth holding on to. Of course, he agreed with her, it was dangerous for them to start something while they were making a case for him to be employed in the ministry. And it had also seemed that she was afraid. Not afraid of him, but the severe consequences of a relationship between the two of them.

It would be a lot to ask of her, perhaps too much. Especially considering his inner voices were fighting each other on whether this was a brilliant idea. And could he really put her through this kind of indecisiveness? Wasn't this one of the reasons he and Astoria hadn't worked out? Because he was always second-guessing his every move. It was a curse left behind by his parents, especially his father, that he would most likely never escape.

But he wanted to! Now was she the one to turn things around for him? Maybe, maybe not. But the times they had spent talking had been so incredibly easy. She was intelligent, obviously, it had been impossible to beat her as first in class with maybe the exception of potions, and she was witty, which was incredibly humorous for him. The kindness she showed the likes of himself was something he had only encountered with Astoria, and Granger did it despite everything he had put through the years. And her beauty. She had a glow to her that he could only think magical. He had been mesmerized by her body and what it had done to him.

As he entered his apartment Draco went straight for his shower. His mind was suddenly entirely filled with brown eyes, soft moans and Granger's body writhing beneath him. As the water hit his tense body he immediately reached for his hard cock and started stroking it while reliving the feeling and taste of Granger, and how she had come around him. He wasn't sure if it was mainly a sexual erection or if his emotional attachment to her had gotten him here, but he knew for sure that as soon as this damn case was done, hopefully ending with him becoming an Auror, he would have her again.

Hope you guys enjoyed the update!
