Chapter Five

Revenge

It took Sakura a few seconds before she was able to move. She closed Eriol's eyes with her fingers, leaving a kiss on his lips.

"We'll never forget you," she whispered in his ear before getting up.

Tomoyo kissed him as well and grabbed Sakura's hand, wiping away her tears.

The two got into the car just as six vampires ran towards them, including Nakuru. Tomoyo stepped on the accelerator and they sped out of that street.

They didn't stop until they reached the river area. Tomoyo turned off the car's engine and they both ran towards the building where their camp was. After entering the rooftop, they locked the door and both collapsed to the ground.

"This has to be a nightmare," Tomoyo muttered, covering her face with her hands.

Sakura had her arms around her legs and was crying silently, unable to stop shaking. Neither of them slept or spoke again all night, until the sun began to rise.

Sakura was the first to stand up. She looked off into the distance, watching a range of mountains. Both of them had dark circles under their eyes, which were puffy from crying.

"I want us to bury him," Tomoyo said, getting to her feet as well.

"And I want us to get the hell out of here and never come back," Sakura replied, pointing to those mountains.

Her friend nodded and the two girls packed up the camp. They divided what they would need from Eriol's backpack into their own and left the building in silence.

Both girls walked to the car and got into it, driving towards the street where Eriol had been attacked. His body was still lying there, surrounded by a pool of his own blood.

The two friends pulled an old blanket they had found along the way out of the car and wrapped Eriol in it.

Sakura grimaced as she saw more signs of bites on his body. The vampires had drunk what was left of his blood when they left.

They put him in the boot and drove past a park. It was so beautiful that Sakura decided it was the perfect place.

They took turns using a small shovel from their backpack and, after several hours, they managed to dig a hole big enough. They put their best friend's body in it and covered it with the earth they had dug out.

Tomoyo placed a large stone she had found nearby on top. With one of Eriol's knives, she wrote his name and age on it.

Meanwhile, Sakura had been picking flowers and placing them around the grave.

"Now he'll rest forever in the city he wanted to know so much," Tomoyo whispered, pulling her close to hug her.

The two friends cried for a long time. Their hearts were broken.

They had lost their best friend, their brother... and the cause was someone who, before becoming a monster, had belonged to their community. Nakuru had known them since they were born.

They both pulled away, wiping their tears with the hem of their shirts.

"Let's get out of here," Sakura demanded in a deep voice.

Tomoyo started to walk towards the car, but Sakura grabbed her arm.

"I don't want to get back in that shit ever again."

Tomoyo turned her head, glancing at her with sad eyes.

"He gave his life so that we could have this car, Sakura. We can't just leave it here, we have to use it until there's no more gasoline left," she said, caressing her cheek.

Sakura sighed with resignation, nodding.

"We should pick some fruit. We're running low on food," she replied quietly.

They spent half an hour walking around the park, putting different fruits and berries in the bags they carried in their backpacks. They also took the opportunity to bathe in a small stream, cleaning the blood stains from their clothes.

Before leaving, they both approached their friend's grave one last time. Sakura stared at the stone that had Eriol's name engraved on it and vowed to avenge his death, thinking of him and all the moments they had lived together.

After that, the two got into the car and drove away from the park with a lump in their throats that would take a long time to disappear.

It started to rain and the gasoline ran out before they managed to get out of the city.

"I'm afraid we'll have to spend one last night in Tokyo," Tomoyo said, stopping the car.

They pulled their backpacks out of the back seat. It was already getting dark, and from what they had seen on the map, it was still a two hour walk to the outskirts of the city.

Sakura snorted in annoyance and followed her friend, sloshing through the rain to a building that looked to be in good condition. As always, they checked it was safe with their weapons in hand and climbed to the top floor.

This one had no roof, but the top floor was fully glazed and, as soon as the sun rose, its rays would reach everywhere, instantly protecting them from the vampires whom the sunlight destroyed. Not needing the tent, they simply took out their sleeping bags and placed them on the floor.

"I'll take the first watch," Sakura whispered, sitting down and holding her bow.

"I don't think we'll get much sleep today either," Tomoyo replied before lying down and turning her back to her.

Sakura closed her eyes heavily and stood up, walking over to the windows. A few tears escaped her green eyes as she thought of her friend and how she would never see him again.

It was three in the morning when Sakura heard laughter in a nearby street.

Looking through the binoculars, she recognised Nakuru and the two other vampires who had participated in the attack on Eriol.

The three of them were walking quietly in the rain, through the bushes and overturned cars in downtown Tokyo.

Sakura felt an incredible hatred coursing through her veins, poisoning her mind and heart. She approached Tomoyo quietly, pulling two of Eriol's knives and a pair of stakes from her backpack.

She walked past her, who was asleep, and started to descend the stairs quietly.

After exiting the building, she hid behind a half-wrecked truck to wait.

Earlier that afternoon, before leaving the car, she had ripped off the rearview mirror and removed the mirror to take it with her. Sakura used it to watch the three vampires still walking in her direction without being seen by them.

All her clothes were getting wet, but she didn't care. The rain wasn't too heavy and the mud that covered her neck and arms would hold for a while. Besides, thanks to the sound of the drops hitting the ground, it was harder for the vampires to hear and discover her.

When she saw that they were about forty metres away, she put the mirror away and pulled out several wooden arrows.

In one swift movement, Sakura stepped out from behind her hiding place and began firing at full speed. She hit the two men in the heart with the first two shots. Both fell to the ground and their skin instantly turned grey.

Nakuru snarled and lunged at her. Sakura grabbed Eriol's dagger, throwing it with great force.

The knife pierced through the vampire's right arm and into a metal plate behind her, trapping her.

Before she could free herself, Sakura rushed towards her and slashed her left hand with the other knife.

Nakuru's scream echoed throughout the street.

"This is for Eriol, you fucking bitch," Sakura growled, pulling out one of the stakes.

She looked Nakuru in the eye as she drove it through her heart with all her might.

Her red eyes glazed over and lost their colour, turning grey like the rest of her body.

Sakura pulled away from her, gasping for breath. It was the first time she had killed vampires in such close proximity and her hands were shaking.

She heard footsteps and turned around, bow at the ready again, but saw Tomoyo running towards her.

"Sakura, what happened?" her friend asked when she reached her side.

"They've paid for their crime," she snarled contemptuously.

Sakura pulled the knife and stake from Nakuru's body, picking up the arrows that were still stuck in the chests of the other two vampires.

"It's almost four o'clock. It's still a long way before the sun rises, and I'm sure other vampires have heard her scream," Tomoyo murmured as the two of them climbed the stairs of the building as fast as they could.

They locked themselves in the room on the top floor where they kept their things and barricaded the door with everything they could find: tables, chairs, even a wardrobe.

Tomoyo peeked out of the windows, looking down at the street.

"Fuck, there's ten of them."

Sakura got closer to her, asking for the binoculars so she could see better. Tomoyo placed them between them and they shared them, looking through at the same time.

Near the door of the building was a group of people talking in the rain and gesturing towards the three vampire corpses.

Four of them picked up the dead and dragged them away while the other six stood in the place, watching the surroundings and peering into all the vehicles. One of them turned around, pointing his hand at the building where they were.

Sakura and Tomoyo gasped, turning away from the window.

"We're screwed," Tomoyo mumbled, glancing at her wristwatch.

Sakura brought a hand to her neck. She had little mud left, the rain had dissolved it and the vampires had detected her human scent. Snorting, she clutched her bow and drew five wooden arrows from her quiver. Tomoyo loaded the gun with eight wooden bullets and passed the other, also loaded, to her. Sakura kept it in her belt and handed Tomoyo one of the knives and two stakes.

The two girls looked at each other and nodded. They just had to try to hold out until the sun came up. As soon as its light surrounded them, they could escape from there and get away from Tokyo forever.

But it was still two hours before dawn.

Can you guess who's coming in the next chapter? :P
