Chapter 11
John woke up when he felt Dean climbing into his bed. Mrs. Riley's grandson had graduated to a regular bed a few months ago and she had asked John if Dean would like his race car toddler bed.
Of course she had asked in front of the child and when he heard the bed was a car he began hopping up and down while clapping his hands so he couldn't say no…besides, he knew Dean should be out of the crib at this age so he had smiled and thanked the rectory's secretary.
Now usually every morning when Dean woke up he would get out of his bed and climbed up and join John. He had to try not to laugh when Dean leaned close and said loudly in his ear, "Daddy wake? We play cars?"
He opened one eye to see Dean's smiling face a few inches away from his own. He heard Sam chuckling in his bed. "Dean, it's too early to play. Now lay down and try to get a little more sleep Ace."
John reached over and pulled Dean down so that he was snuggled against him. Dean immediately began to wiggle like a worm. "Daddy need to peepee."
John groaned, "of course you do." He said as he caught sight of Sam's blankets moving and his son was sitting up across from them.
"Come on Dean, let Dad get some more sleep. After you go potty we can make pancakes for breakfast." Sam said as he lifted the toddler and stood him next to him.
"Thanks Sammy," John said as he closed his eyes to try get some more shut eye before facing a day of a hyper toddler who he had promised to play cars with and there was no way Dean wasn't going to hold him to that promise.

John stood in the kitchen doorway and watched his sons. Sam had pulled a step stool next to him so that Dean could stand by his side and his pudgy little hands clapped as Sam flipped the pancake on the griddle.
"Mickey…Sammy made Mickey!"
John smiled as he watched the toddler. Sam and the others had told him when he came back downstairs last night about the possibility that Caleb's friend might be able to alter the spell to end it sooner.
He was slightly ashamed that his first thought was why didn't this Eabha make this offer back when it first happened. He wouldn't have given it a second thought. He would have agreed in a heartbeat so that him and Dean could have finished their mission to take out Yellow Eyes together.
Now though he wasn't sure how he felt. If she could cast this spell should he let her do it or should he let it run its course naturally? What would Dean want?
Funny that nobody ever question why Dean had reverted back so far. He was surprised that Sammy never wondered why two and not four…why not when everything changed for the small family?
Of course John knew…he was just shocked that Dean's memories went that far back but he must have remembered what it was like back then.
Him and Mary were fighting a lot and he had taken off a couple of times…leaving Mary and Dean alone for days at a time. He never realized that this had an impact on his son…that he stopped feeling completely loved and safe back then and that shattered him.
Selfishly he liked to think prior to the fire that he was a great father. That he had given Dean all the love and support a child that age would need but when he understood the meaning behind the spell he found himself feeling ashamed because obviously he had failed Dean back then.
It didn't help that after Mary died he began taking off again…of course the child would have felt afraid but he was too damn busy thinking about himself he barely gave the four year old by his side more than a passing thought beyond food and his other basic needs.
No he understood why he went so far back and he was trying to make things right for his son…for both his sons. So he wasn't sure what they should do. He was pulled out of his thoughts when he heard Dean ask Sam. "Go Rick-n-Treat soon?"
"Trick, not Rick but yup we're going tonight. You excited?" Sam asked as he flipped the Mickey Mouse shape pancake on Dean's plate before turning off the stove.
"Unhun ," the toddler said happily as Sam turned and lifted him up to place him in his high chair.
"Daddy go?" He asked as Sam strapped in before placing the plate in front of him, taking a fork and knife and cutting it up and adding syrup.
"Yup Dad's coming with us. Eat up Dean."
"Sammy milk please?"
"I've got it Sam," John said as he decided to make his present known.
"Thanks Dad. Pancakes?"
"Sounds good," he said as he placed the sippy cup of milk in front of his son.
"Today's my Saturday," Sam reminded his father. "But I should be home by 1:00."
"Right," John said as he poured a cup of coffee for himself and Sam. He looked over at Dean. "So Ace…you're stuck with your old man today. What are we going to do?"
Dean looked up and gave his father a syrup smeared smile, "play cars!"
Sam snorted as he flipped several pancakes onto a plate and handed it to his father. "Don't think he's gonna let you back out of playing cars today Dad."
"Guess not," he laughed. "We'll play cars after breakfast. Then how about we go to the park?"
"Park! Swing!" Dean exclaimed.
"Who's going to the park?" Caleb asked as he came in scratching himself.
"Dude do you have to scratch your butt in the kitchen?" Sam huffed as he poured more batter onto the griddle.
Caleb smirked as he turned around, bent over and pulled his lounge pants down to moon Sam.
Dean eyes widened, "Daddy…Caleb bum bum!" He said with a giggle as he pointed his finger at Caleb's wiggling ass.
"Gee Johnson, that isn't a sight anyone needs to see." John laugh.
"Oh I didn't know there was a full moon out," called out a feminine voice.
Sam and John both burst out laughing when they saw Mrs. Riley smiling in amusement in the doorway as Caleb looked over his shoulder at the woman he known since he was a preteen and had come to live with Jim after his parents were killed.
"Umm hiya Mrs. R," he stammered as he pulled his pants up and had the good grace to blush as he slunk over and say down at the table.
"Caleb," she said as she came all the way into the kitchen. She went over and grabbed a couple of paper towels and wet them before crossing over to Dean.
"Hi Sweetie, let me clean that handsome face of yours." She cooed to Dean who giggled as he scrunched his eyes shut while she washed his face.
Mrs. Riley was the only other person besides Bobby and Rufus that knew about Dean. Sadly, she knew what they all did since her husband was killed by a rugaru thirty years ago and Jim had not only killed the monster but had offered to help her start a new life with her infant daughter when she relocated to Blue Earth.
"Did you eat Mrs. Riley?"
"I did, thank you Samuel." The older woman said as she ruffled Dean's hair before taking his empty plate and placing it in the sink. "Please let Pastor Jim know I left his sermon on his desk as well as his schedule for today's visits."
"Yes Ma'am," Caleb and Sam said at the same time.
"Alright I'm heading to my daughter's to babysit." She said as she started for the back door. "Oh and Caleb…I would suggest you don't moon Pastor Jim when he comes down for breakfast. I don't think he appreciate the show."
"Yes Ma'am," Caleb mumbled as he glared at John and Sam who began guffawing again as she pinched his cheek before she slipped out the back door. "Okay yuk it up you two." He huffed before looking over to see Dean giggling as he clapping his hands and asked the toddler, " Et tu, Brute?"

John and Jim sat in the living room waiting for Sam and Caleb to come downstairs with Dean to go Trick n Treating. Sam had tried to convince John to wear a theme costume but John flat out refused.
He didn't do it the first time around when Mary had suggested it so he wasn't about to do it now. So Caleb said he would wear the 'damn costume' and John was manning the camera.
John and Jim looked up when they heard Sam encouraging Dean to show Daddy his special costume. John picked up the camera and couldn't help grinning when Dean came scampering into the room and he finally saw the costume.
He quickly lifted the camera and snapped a shot of Dean wearing a Scooby Doo plush zip up costume with an attached head. He chuckled when Jim said, "Artie where's Dean?"
Dean giggled and ran up to the other man. "It me Uncle Jim," the boy said.
Jim made a show at looking at Dean and gasped. "John…Dean turned into a doggie ."
"Noooo…me Dean not doggie!" Dean laughed as Jim made a show of patting his head and saying, 'good doggie'.
"Ace where's Sammy and Caleb?" John asked.
Right on cue Sam and Caleb came into the room. John smirked as he raised the camera and quickly snapped a picture of the hunters.
His studious son was currently decked out as the hippie dippy Shaggy and Caleb was wearing a ridiculous blond wig and an ascot. He was even more relief that he had refused to wear the costume because he wouldn't be caught dead in that get up.
"Hey Ace, go over with your brother and Caleb so Daddy can take a picture," John told his son who had begun playing with Artie.
Dean looked up at his father before turning to the two newcomers. He reached down and held onto Artie's collar as they ran over to Sammy and Caleb. The toddle giggled as Sammy scooped he up and tossed him in the air before settling him on his hip and turning so John could snap a few photos of the three of them.
Sam was a little surprised when Jim told his father to give him the camera and to go over so he could take a photo with his sons. But he was more than happy to stand next to his Dad as he draped his arm across his shoulder and Dean sat on his hip, nestled between them. He knew that was going to be a photo that was going to find its way into both men's wallets.

John smiled as Dean rested his head on his shoulder as he climbed upstairs to change his son into his pjs.
"Did you have fun trick n treating?" He asked the child after they had finished their bedtime ritual and he was tucking the exhausted toddler into his bed.
Dean nodded his head sleepily as he reached out for John. "Daddy me no like ombee," he told his father, his voice trembling slightly.
John sighed as was usually the case with pre-teen boys a few dressed like zombies pretended they were going to eat Dean while they were waiting their turn to ring the bell for one of the houses up the street.
At first Dean was fine but one of the boys got a little rambunctious and pretended he was going to bite Dean. He knew the kid didn't mean any harm and thought Dean was having fun but with any small child giggling can turn into crying in record time.
"Don't worry there's no such things as zombies and even if there was do you think either me or Sammy would let one near you."
"Daddy stomp on ombee!" Dean said as he traced the pattern of his bed spread.
"Yup Daddy stomp on zombies," John said with a smile. "You want a story?"
Dean looked over at his little bookshelf and cried. "Horton!"
"Horton it is," John told him and soon he heard the toddler soft snores. He gently untangle himself from his little octopus and was just standing up when Sam came into the room.
"Hey Shaggy," John teased.
"Very funny," Sam said with a snort. "Was he alright?"
"He's fine…told me to stomp on zombies if they come after him."
"Aww come on he knows you have to shoot them in the head." The younger man said as he pulled off the wig and grabbed a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt. "Caleb and I are going into town to grab a couple of beers."
John nodded his head, "okay, I have some research to do."
Sam smirked at his father and asked, "on zombies?"
John looked over at his son who was finishing changing and said, "cute. I want to do some research on these druids."
Sam stopped putting on his boots as he looked up at his Dad. "What?"
"I'm not letting this Eabha near him without doing my research." John told him seriously.
Sam swallowed as he looked at his sleeping brother. "Does that mean you've made a decision?"
John nodded his head sadly, "I'm sorry Sam. As much as I want to let this run its course it would be selfish of me because I would be doing it for myself and not for Dean. Your brother is an adult and if I can give him back his life then who am I to take that away from him."
Sam hated what his father was saying mostly because he knew he was right…if Dean had a choice he would choose his life to be back to normal. "Yeah, I know." He admitted miserably.
John went over and placed his hand on his son's shoulder. "I hate this too. Having this time back with him…having a chance to be a real father again. I'm not ready to let him go but I can't sacrifice Dean's chance to get to his real life back. He would never forgive that."
Sam nodded his head and did something that he hadn't done in years. He turned and wrapped his arms around his father and hugged him. John swallowed the lump in his throat as he gently lifted his arms and pulled his son closer and offering the comfort the younger man needed. "I've got you Kiddo," he murmured soothingly.

A/N: Okay don't be angry at John...he is actually trying to be a good father to Dean here. He knows Dean is an adult and if he can give his son his life back then he owes it to him.
Also I need a chance for John to offer some comfort to Sam because even though he's not pint size right now, Sammy is also John's son and he finally understands Sam needs him just as much now as Dean does.
Thanks again!
