Chapter 15

John and Sam sat down on the couch in the living room of their new rental house. "I don't remember it ever taking so long to move into a furnished place before." Sam said to his father.

"That's because all our stuff fit in the Impala. We needed to borrow the truck to move all of Dean's things," his father reminded him.

Sam chuckled because he knew his father was right. They had just finished putting the full size bed that usually sat in the room they put Dean in away in the attic since his race car bed took up a good portion of the room.

They had decided to use the sun room off the living room to set up as Dean's playroom with most of his toys now sat waiting to be unpacking.

John slapped Sam on the knee, "why don't you unpack his toys while I go to the grocery store. Then we can go and pick your brother up from Jim's and then grab some lunch."

"Sounds like a good idea to me," Sam said.

"Okay, I'll be back soon," John agreed as he stood up.

John and Sam stood in Jim's kitchen as Dean laid on the floor sobbing on his stomach as he pounded his fists and kicked his legs.

"Dean Winchester that's enough," John said as he reached down and lifted the crying toddler up.

"Nooooooo!" Dean wailed.

Sam winced at the screaming tantrum his brother was currently having. "Come on Dean, calm down."

"Artieeeeee! Comes!" He screamed as he twisting his body to get away from his father.

John wrapped his arm around Dean's stomach and landed a stinging pop on his behind. "Calm down young man," he said as the toddler stopped wiggling to get out of his father's grasp.

Dean looked up at his father as he sniffled, "Artie Daddy," he cried miserably.

John sighed as he lifted the child up and brought him over to the sink and sat him down on the counter before he grabbed a clean kitchen towel and wet it. "Artie is Uncle Jim's dog," he told Dean as he began wiping the toddler's face.

"Please Daddy," Dean cried pitifully as he wrapped his arms around his neck.

"I'm sorry Ace but Artie can't come with us but you can come and visit him…promise." John told him as he hugged Dean before settling on the floor next to him.

John looked down as the dog in question came scampering over and began to lick Dean's face as the toddler turned and hugged the animal close. "I love you Artie," the child sobbed as he kissed the dog face.

Sam swallowed as he watched his brother, "Dad…"

"He needs to understand he can't have everything he wants," John said before he Sam could argue on Dean's behalf.

Dean knelt on the floor hugging his best friend gazing up at his father and brother. John swallowed as his baby boy breath hitched as his green eyes brimming with fresh tears. Closing his eyes he sighed before turning to leave the room.

"Dad?" Sam called out.

"I'm going to talk to Jim," he grumbled. He just couldn't take Dean looking at him like that. Like he was stepping on his whole world and crushing it.

Dean leaned against his brother as Sam finished reading The Poky Little Puppy. Dean yawned as he looked up at his brother. "Again?"

Sam shook his head as he leaned over and kissed the top of Dean's head. "Sorry Squirt but twice is the limit. Scoot down so I can finish tucking you in."

Dean looked around the room before looking up at Sam. "Where Daddy's bed?"

"Dad's bed is in his bedroom. This is your bedroom." Sam explained for the tenth time as he stood up and tucked him in.

"You sleep?" He asked.

Sam smiled as he put the book back on the bookshelf he had put up early that day. "No I'm not sleeping in here. Remember I showed you my bedroom earlier."

"Me sleep with you please?" Dean asked as he started to get out of the bed.

Sam shook his head. His father had warned him that Dean would probably be a little out of sorts going back into his own bedroom but they both agreed it was time.

"No Buddy but I got you this awesome nightlight and I'll leave your door open and if you need me or Dad all you have to do is call out and we'll be right here." He told him as he tucked him back in again.

"Artie?" He asked.

"He's already sleeping down by your feet," he told him.

"Love you Artie! Nighty night!" Dean said as he waved down at the sleeping dog.

"Do you have a good night for your old man?" John ask as he stood in the doorway.

"Daddy," Dean cried as he held his arms out for a hug.

"Night Ace," John said as he joined Sam by Dean's bed leaning over, giving his son a hug and a kiss on the forehead.

Sam turned on the nightlight on the bedside table and grinned when the shade began to rotate. "Now Dean watch the ceiling," he told him as went over to the door and clicked the overhead light out.

Dean gasped as he looked up at the ceiling and saw the swirling lights and fishes swimming above him. He yawned as his eyes began to droop as he watched the motions of the soothing lights as the base of the lamp played a soft lullaby.

John smiled as his Little Man tried to keep his eyes open but within a few minutes they drifted shut and he fell asleep. John and Sam headed downstairs. "Well I think we deserve a beer," John said as they walked into the kitchen. "Oh and while we're enjoying our beer you can explain to me why when I spoke to Jim earlier about Artie coming with us until Dean is settled he said it was fine since the dog is really ours anyways since you're actually the one who adopted him." He said to his son with a stern look on his face but a glint of mischief in his eyes.
