The next week seemed to go by rather quickly to Saphira. She and Tobias worked on the project with a fierce determination, Vladimir came up with more jokes to tell her, she spent dinners with Cynthia, and Michladen seemed to avoid her. She was okay with that, even though she still wanted to find out what was bothering him about her. And as time went on, the idea of them being her new family became solid quickly. But she did not know that at the end of the week, a culling was to take place as their hunger grew.
Saphira hummed as she bit into a piece of fruit that was similar to an apple as she walked towards the lab room. She had managed to figure out how to get to the room from her bedroom and the dining room, Vladimir still hung around in the shadows if needed, but she picked up the way very quickly. She had not seen Vladimir today, and she did wonder what the reason was. She entered the lab and looked up to speak when she saw Tobias was shirt, and wearing black pants instead of the silver he was normally wearing.
"Oh sorry!" Saphira exclaimed when she saw him, turning away as her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I had no idea you were changing."
"It's alright Saphira, there is no harm," He responds calmly. "I am merely changing into a commander's uniform."
Saphira looked back at him with curiosity, just in time to see his abs on his chest. She had not really considered that their bodies would look like that. He slipped on the black robe and covered his chest. "I did not know you could be a commander?"
"Any of us can be, I am actually the commander for the bridge whereas Vladimir he's the commander for dart training and culling," Tobias explained. "I wear both science and commander attire."
"I am surprised you have not mentioned that before," Saphira said before glancing out of the room and back at Tobias. "Speaking of, where is Vladimir?"
"He has taken a small squadron to a human world to cull," He responds, watching as Saphira's expression turned to shock at the realisation. "We are not going to let you near these people okay, so you'll only know that they will be here."
"I luckily have not yet found the room where you pod humans, but I am glad for the warning," She said with a smile.
"Tobias, the queen wishes to talk to you," Michladen's voice said sternly. "I can keep watch while you go to her."
"Very well, be nice to her okay," Tobias said with a warning glare. "Remember what Vladimir told you if you do anything."
"Of course, I do not want to hurt our precious human," The green wraith hissed, which Tobias growled at in response before leaving. Michladen sighed and looked at Saphira was looking at him, and he noticed there was a sadness in her eyes. "Why do you stare at me?"
"I just want to know what I did to make you hate me so much," She responds in the same small voice she had when she thanked him for the food. "I did not realize I had done something, and I hope that we could be friends. Even if we have to start again."
The junior commander observed her, he did not detect anything deceptive from her. It drove him mad that she was honest, he had wished she had deceived them so he could destroy the Genii. "The Genii have hurt me Saphira, that is all I will say."
He turned his head away and Saphira thought on what he said. There was so many times the wraith had been on her world and other worlds the Genii inhabited that she could not think of what he meant.
"Oh…was it that young queen that the Genii found thirty years ago and tortured to death?" Saphira asked curiously. "Was she close to you?"
Michladen turned his head towards her slightly. "Yes, yes she was. She was only a child, and I was entrusted to protect her when we visited a world that might have been home to her hive ship. But the Genii ambushed us, they knocked me out and stole the queen. No one here really knows about that, and you must not tell anyone as I am from a different hive."
The guilt on his face was clear to her. Saphira was not even born at the time this happened, she felt sad that he had this on his shoulders. Without saying anything, Saphira stepped closer to him and moved her hands around him to hug him. The wraith was so caught off guard that he was at first shocked by her reaction.
"I am very sorry, I cannot apologise for the Genii at all, but I can sympathise with you for the loss of the young queen and the responsibility that you were entrusted with had been broken," Saphira said gently. "I was not even conceived when that happened, please do not hold me accountable for what happened to that queen. I am not a Genii anymore, and I do not want to be associated with them. Thank you for telling me, I hope that you can look past the place I come from so we can be friends."
Saphira pulled away with a sigh, turning to walk over to the table to continue working on the console. It was currently only a quarter finished and she decided to continue working on it. Michladen stood in shock, this human just hugged him and sympathised with him regarding his past. He was not sure what to feel towards her anymore, the anger he had was gone and replaced with confusion. He could not see why the other wraith loved her, she is gentle and understanding. Michladen breathed deeply and regained his original stance at the door, ignoring that he basically opened up to her and the fact that she had hugged him. An hour past and Saphira heard the darts in the hangar, she did not go out but she listened as she heard people being beamed out of the darts and dragged away by the wraith. She listened to their screams and pleas, she chuckled a little and focused on her project. The door that led into the hangar opened and Vladimir walked into the lab.
"I apologise for not helping you get to the lab today Saphira, I had to do something today," He said apologetically. He looked around and noticed Michladen at the doorway. "Where is Tobias?"
"He's with Cynthia, and I found out he is also a commander as well," She responds plainly, looking at him with a smile.
Tilting his head, Vladimir noticed her demeaner seemed off. He glanced at Michladen with a curious expression. "Did you do something to her?"
"No, I have not," He responded calmly. "Why do you ask?"
"She seems off today," Vladimir said as he walked closer to Saphira. "Are you feeling okay?" He placed a hand on her head, making Saphira giggle as he checked her temperature. "Are you coming down with some sickness or something?"
Saphira giggled and buried her head into her elbow for a moment before looking at him. "I am okay, and I found that rather cute and amusing that you checked my temperature. Trust me, if I ever get sick, I will not leave my room. Michladen did nothing to me. You might as well go get your lunch." The commander widened his eyes at what she said. "Tobias told me where you were, don't worry. I'll be working on this."
"You really are accepting of it all it would seem," The wraith smiled gleefully. "You heard the people we brought then I assume. Good, I had worried that hearing our food you would try to save them."
"Understandable, but I did mean what I said about vengeance against the galaxy," Saphira said with a smile. "I notice you lot have been more antsy, and I assume because you're hungry. Go on, it's not fair I get to eat every day, and you are staying your hunger to talk to me."
The wraith smiled at her before sighing deeply. "Sometimes I wish I did not have to. I shall be back later."
Saphira watched Vladimir turned to leave, he placed a hand on Michladen's shoulder and they both leave her alone to go and feed. She sighed deeply and continued working on the console. She was left alone for a few hours, her mind pondered on what Michladen had told her and the more she thought about it the more angry she got for him. She already guessed that Michladen and the young queen had not provoked the Genii, and they were ambushed when the attack happened. She could not help but think of ways to make them pay for it. She did not even realize the time when she began to feel hungry. It was lunch time and she stretched her back, not noticing she had knocking something on the ground. She looked at the partially built console with a smile and turned to leave when she felt her right leg slide forward and her ankle twisted suddenly. She grabbed the table roughly, her right hand slid on the edge slightly. She winced as pain shot through her ankle, she glanced up and saw no wraith had seen it. She sighed and carefully picked up the driver tool off the ground and placed it on the table. She placed her right foot onto the ground and winced as any sort of weight caused pain to shoot through her. She did manage to get on her hands and knees to crawl to the door. She grabbed the side of the doorway to help her up and peered out, no one was around. Her hands did hurt a little bit from hitting the table hard when she grabbed it, but that did not worry her. She limped down the hallway towards her room, she did not know where Loroy's room was and she didn't want to wander around while the wraith were feeding. She could hear echoes of screaming though and she blocked them out. She never brought the communication device with her when she was out of her room, and she now realized she would need to now. Getting to her room took fifteen minutes and she hopped on her left foot to get to the door and then to the bed to sit on it.
She sighed and slid over to the table to pick up the device to press the button for Loroy. She waited for two minutes before he responded to her. "Saphira?" His voice came through in surprise. She heard the sound of someone whimpering which meant he was feeding. "Why are you calling me?"
"Sorry if I am interrupting…I…I might have hurt myself," She said slowly. "Sorry."
"Don't apologise, um…where are you? I'll send one of the others to get you to the healer room," He said, clearly concerned for her while trying to seem intimidating to the human he was feeding on at the same time.
"I am in my room, I didn't bring this device with me."
"Hopefully you won't next time, alright, Vladimir is on his way. Is it a serious injury?"
"Not really, the worst I'll have is a sprain," Saphira said, laying on her bed to relax while she waited.
"Hmm…you slipped on something, alright, I'll see you shortly," Loroy said as he turned his attention back to the human.
Saphira placed the device on the side table and relaxed, rubbing her forehead as she felt stupid for not bringing it with her. She hoped they would not prevent her from working on the project due to an ankle injury. She was hungry though, so she hoped to ask Vladimir to get some food.
"We leave you for a couple hours and something happens huh?" Vladimir joked as he entered the bedroom. Saphira sat up when she heard him and smiled. "What happened?"
"I slipped on a tool that fell on the floor," She responded casually.
He sat down looking at her foot and lifts it gently, Saphira winced at the movement due to the pain. "Did you not see it?"
"I did not even notice anything fell, I was too focused and I was about to leave to get some food when I slipped on it," She explained, covering her eyes with her hand. "Can we go?"
"I'll accompany you," Cynthia's voice said gently as she arrived at the room. "Loroy alerted everyone about it. A sprained ankle huh?"
Saphira shrugged and Vladimir picked her up to carry her. "It was an accident. Does this put a dent in the prototype?"
"No, if you weren't able to get out of bed than yes," She said with a smile. "But you will rest for the rest of the day."
"But I can still work on it," Saphira said with a frown. She glanced at Vladimir as he walked out of the room. "You can take me back to the lab."
"I am in agreement with the queen, I will bring you your lunch after Loroy checks your ankle," He said, glancing at her kind. He could see she was determined to keep working and he understood why, but she needed rest. "Don't worry, I can entertain you while you rest."
"That would be nice, but as long as I am not stopping you from eating too," Saphira said with a slight frown. "I don't want to be the reason why you don't."
"There is enough food for a few days, do not despair Saphira," Vladimir smiled at her.
She was relieved, but she still felt guilty that they would stop feeding to tend to her. She kicked herself mentally for not being self-aware of her surroundings. When they reached the healer room, Vladimir placed her on the examination table and leaned down to undo her shoe.
"Um…shouldn't you wait for Loroy?" Saphira asked, watching him undo her shoe.
"Loroy asked me to do this, I'll be gentle," He responded and gently began to pull the shoe off. Saphira lifts her arm to bite it so she would not make so much noise, but the pain was a lot. "Almost there, you really did a number on your ankle though. It's swollen."
Cynthia walked closer to lean down, wincing at the sight as Vladimir finished removing the shoe and placed it aside. "Yes it is, hopefully it will heal quickly."
"Let me figure that out." Loroy entered the room and knelt down to inspect her foot. Saphira laid back to try and ignore the pain as he moves her ankle gently to test it. "It is definitely a sprain, it will likely take a week to heal."
"And that means someone has to carry her?" Vladimir asked, knowing it would be him who would be carrying her.
"Yes I am afraid, but it is not all bad." The healer stood up and walked over to a shelf to grab out a bandage. He returned to wrap some of the bandage around her ankle and foot to keep it from moving too much. "At least it is not broken, or that could take months to healer." He stood up with a smile and looked at Saphira. "I'll give you some pain medicine too. And if you cannot sleep…" He paused for a moment. Saphira looked at him curiously and he grabbed her hands to look at them. "And these bruises, where did they come from?"
"I grabbed the table a little bit hard to stop myself from falling," Saphira explained, pulling her hands away and looking at them. "They do not need anything to help the bruises heal."
"Good, I thought they might have a cut, but there is not any," Loroy smiled, relieved they were only bruises. "As I was saying, if you find it hard to sleep, I can give you something for that. I am sure Tobias would not enjoy you working on the prototype while half asleep."
"I would not enjoy it either." She sat up with a deep sigh. "Can I go back now?"
Loroy nods. "You may need help to use the bathroom and getting dressed." Saphira's face pale visibly, the thought of the wraith seeing her naked made her feel anxious suddenly. "There is no need to be afraid, I can do it if you would prefer."
"Um…what about a chair with wheels?" Saphira asked with an anxious smile. "I'd rather have some independence if I could."
"That could be arranged, but what are you afraid of?" Loroy asked curiously.
"She's a female Loroy, and a male that has to lift her to the toilet and bathe her probably scares her," Cynthia said bluntly. "That is normal. I could help you instead if you would like?"
"But you're the queen," Saphira responds. "I don't want you to get your hands dirty." She glanced at Vladimir and Loroy. "I'd rather just have a wheeled chair please."
"Very well, we will bring you one tonight," Vladimir said as he picked her up again. "Let's get you back to your room and I will then go get you food."
Saphira smiled at him with a nod and the wraith carried her back to her room. She was not sure if the wraith seeing her naked and vulnerable was something she would want. While the wraith may not do anything, she really was unnerved by the suggestion from Loroy, and she could tell he only offered it to help her. And she was touched, but she would rather have some independence even if it was done with a chair.
