Marcus-Kor of Krypton
Author's Note: This is a random unimaginative story of a surviving Kryptonian form the planet's destruction but I felt like typing it out. Hope you like it.
In the fanfiction titled 'Worlds Collide' in the alternate universe referred to as Earth 38, part of the 'Arrowverse', there was a crisis that involved multiple people from alternate universes coming together. Lord Voldemort, from the Harry Potter universe, came to Earth 38 and waged War. The Avengers, The Justice League, and many other characters including the Avatar from the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, fought together and defeated him.
3 months after the events of 'Worlds Collide' a rogue Kryptonian pod finally reaches its destination.
Chapter 1
In the distant corner of the universe is a cluster of 100 billion stars called the Milky Way galaxy. Within a remote corner of the Milky Way Galaxy is a planet called Earth.
Within the habitable zone of the orbit around the red supergiant star referred to as Rao was the Planet Krypton, 3122 light-years from Earth.
On Krypton they have all of the classic cliche science fiction technology; they have food synthesizers, environmental simulators, flying cars, teleportation, and interestingly they can build all of their buildings and machinery and equipment by manipulating the growth of crystals. They had thrived and flourished. But they didn't often travel off-world. Mainly because their cells had adverse effects on anything but a red Sun.
While they lived on their home planet they lived in a Utopia. They enjoyed good food and comfort. And they studied science and the Arts. But unfortunately it went to their heads when they had thrived on their world to the point where they had insufficient power for their society and civilization, so they harvested their own molten core as a source of energy. They knew the risk, it would make their core unstable and would cause a cosmic explosion from the inside out fragmenting their Planet into multiple pieces. But they believed they would solve the problem long before the core became unstable. They never solved the problem; they never stopped harvesting, and their world was doomed.
On the Planet Krypton in July 1975 on Earth's calendar, in a remote secluded mountainous region in the southern hemisphere was a giant science lab and a hangar bay.
13 year old Marcus-Kor sat with his mother Diana-Kor as all of a sudden the ground began to shake. The seismic tremors had been becoming more frequent for the past year.
"Marcus-Kor my son.'' said the mother lovingly as tears rolled down from her eyes. "It is time."
"Time for what?" asked Marcus-Kor.
Like most of the population, he was unaware of the planet's impending destruction. The government felt that it would not be within the people's best interest to let them know that their world was doomed. The only result would be Widespread Panic.
Diana-Kor was a brilliant scientist and a master progeny of Crystal Growth engineering. She was well aware of everything that was going to happen, however she didn't expect it to happen this soon. She thought it would be at least another five years before the planet exploded and by then she hoped to have found a way to save the planet. But she was out of time.
"No time to explain, my son." she said as she then took a syringe and injected it into his neck.
He fell asleep in a matter of seconds.
She lifted him in her arms and carried him to a small spacecraft that had nothing but a cockpit.
"Madame Diana-Kor." said an artificial intelligence that spoke to the woman. "The faster than light engine is faulty. The engine will give out after 99% of the journey. He will be destined to float in the void of space unless someone finds him and plucks him out of the Void."
"We're out of time. We have no choice. Is the data download complete?"
"It is complete madam." said the artificial intelligence.
She then sprinted over to the computer terminal and pulled a purple Crystal out of the console. She then extracted an earpiece from her ear that had a flashing light on it and then placed it on to a wrist device that she was wearing. She then attached the purple crystal to the wrist device. She then removed the wrist device and placed it on the wrist of her son.
She looked down at her son who was asleep in the Pod and a tear fell from her eye onto the boy's cheek.
"You will be safe my son."
The seismic tremors continued to get worse and beams and supports began to fall from the ceiling of the lab.
"And if you could not save Krypton then you will save Earth. Launch now!"
The hatch closed on the Pod and both Marcus-Kor and everything inside the cockpit froze over with a thin layer of frost. The Pod then flew forward with its sublight engines out of the hangar Bay. Moments after the Pod was gone, the laboratory was then surrounded by an energy Shield.
The Pod flew into space, and several thousand miles to port were two other identical pods. Marcus-Kor's pod shot forward in a flash of light as it entered faster-than-light travel. The ship travelled for more than a month until it's faster-than-light drive gave out. The Pod continued towards its destination at it's snail's pace sub-light drive.
39 years later
The pod had finally reached its destination. It arrived in orbit of Earth. The pod's power was nearly depleted but it had enough to land. It also initiated the reanimation process of its cryogenic hibernation function. The boy who had aged less than a month in the 39 years of hibernation awoke. A little hung over by the hibernation process, but relatively alert. The last thing he remembered was his mother injecting him with a syringe. And now he was alone in the pod. He was familiar with the Pod. He had flown in it several times in the past. He looked out the window and he saw a small bright star in the distance. And what appeared to be, right above him, at least by the relativity of up and down in Space, by the current position and angle of the ship, was a planet. He saw mostly blue indicating saltwater oceans, and then a few small continents in comparison to the vast amount of water. On some of the land he saw large patches of a depressing yellow which he guessed was desert, while other parts were patches of dense green indicating a chlorophyll based vegetation. On opposite ends of the planet he saw patches of white which he concluded as Arctic ice, as well as other patches of white here and there that he concluded as atmospheric precipitation of water vapor. In one spot over the ocean he saw some of the atmospheric precipitation in a large swirling spiral which his scientific knowledge told him was a tropical storm.
Another thing he noticed was that the air inside the cockpit was stale, however the CO2 scrubbers and oxygen generator were still functioning.
The ship's autopilot then aimed the ship's nose towards the planet and the ship began its descent. The ship began to shake as the heat resistant friction proof windows were then covered in bright yellow fire as the pod entered the atmosphere. This continued on for about a minute until the ship's velocity had considerably slowed and entered into the more freezing temperatures of the lower atmosphere. The ship had done a roll manoeuvre so that the belly was now facing the ground as the ship continued its descent aiming towards one of the areas of land that would be known by the humans as the West Coast of the North American continent.
At just under the speed of sound the ship flew over the mountainous areas of British Columbia, Canada. The pod's belly scraped against the top of a tall mountain where it then continued its descent and crashed in a clearing area sliding on its belly smashing through trees and plants and Boulders along its way until it came to a complete stop.
With all power to the engines cut the ship was now in low-power mode. Young Marcus-Kor then reached out and touched the blue crystal on the console which caused the Pod's hatch to open. He then noticed the air. It was warm, but not too hot, just above standard room temperature. And then the smells. He guessed that this planet had an oxygen and nitrogen atmosphere but the equipment in the cockpit sensor display indicated a number of Industrial carbon gases. But that isn't what he could smell. He was surrounded by dense vegetation. He could smell soft bacteria rich soil. He could smell a humid tang combined with a floral scent from a variety of different plants. He stood up from his seat and climbed out of the pod. When he looked behind the Pod he saw a trail of Destruction several hundred metres long.
What to do now? That was the question that he was asking himself. He was no longer on Krypton. Didn't even know if he could get back. So he decided to explore his surroundings. He got down on one knee and he picked up a pebble on the ground. He examined it. It seemed to be a random unknown mixture compound of iron, sodium, calcium, and a few other metals on the periodic table. He looked down at his boots and he bounced up and down on the balls of his feet testing the planet's gravity. He had no difficulty carrying his own weight. He didn't know what planet he was on, but he guessed that this planet's overall Mass was slightly less than that of Krypton, therefore perhaps 10% less gravity than that of Krypton. But surprisingly a thicker atmosphere. Krypton's atmosphere is, well, 'one atmosphere', in terms of atmospheric measurement. At least 'one atmosphere' for Krypton. In comparison to krypton's atmospheric measurement of 'one atmosphere', this planet's atmospheric pressure at sea level seems to be 1.2 atmospheres. Though if his memory of his Crash Landing serves correct the mountainous region, his current geographical location is give or take a thousand metres above that of sea level.
He then looked at the pebble in his hand and then experimentally testing the muscles in his fingers he pinched the pebble with all his might.
Pebble then exploded into coarse sand between his thumb and fingers. Strange? He thought to himself, the piece of rock must have been made of a significantly more bristle compound then he had guessed. Looking at the plants around him he observed a number of weeds and shrubs. And trees. Millions of trees. The trees covered the mountains.
He then looked up into the sky. It was a clear sky but not completely clear. There were a few clouds here and there and of course the Sun. It was an interesting sight to see. He was used to seeing a bright red star in the sky, and the sun being a lot bigger. He knew from his education in basic astronomy and astrophysics that the sun was a yellow dwarf star and the habitable zone of the star's orbit was approximately a 100 million kilometre radius from the Sun. He reached up towards the Sun trying in his imagination to touch it. And then he noticed his peripheral vision that the tops of the trees were moving downward.
He looked around and he saw that he was no longer on the ground. He looked down and he realized that he was twenty meters give or take above the ground. He gasped in Surprise but he stayed airborne and did not fall.
'Is this part of this planet's gravity?' He asked himself. It seems kind of random. But no other objects were floating off the ground.
'I wish I could put my feet back on the ground,' he thought to himself and slowly he began to float back down to the ground.
He smiled at himself with a laugh. He tried again only this time consciously willing himself into the air. And it works. It seemed as though his body would move wherever he would want it to go. Forward, backward, side-to-side, faster, slower. It was exhilarating!
Then there were the sounds. He heard the babble of rushing water from a stream. He heard the chirping and cawing of birds. The scuttling of little feet on the forest floor, the buzzing of insects. And it was so loud in his ears, it was almost overwhelming. He grabbed hold of a tree and while trying to shut out the sound from his mind he squeezed the tree trunk a little too hard and it crushed into splinters in his hand causing the tree trunk above it to collapse and fall the Forest floor.
"What is going on?" he asked himself again.
He then set himself down on the ground and tried to orient himself. He then heard the soft footballs of hooves. Out from behind a tree was what appeared to be some kind of animal.
'A native inhabitant. Is it intelligent?' He asked himself.
In his 13 years he had met many alien creatures. Some insectoid, some reptilian, some humanoids with four to six arms. This creature seemed to be a hoofed ruminant mammal, barely larger than himself.
"Hello?" he greeted the creature.
The creature looked up at him. He wasn't sure if it was giving off any kind of intelligence, but rather it exhibited curiosity.
He took a step forward and a twig snapped under his Boot and the alien disappeared into the woods in alarm.
When the animal went behind the plants he tried to follow it with his eyes where then the light changed, like infrared goggles or night vision helmet and he could then see through the plants as he followed the creature with his eyes. It seemed that he could see through solid objects.
Then he began to hear a rumbling sound up in the sky. When he looked in the direction of the sound he could see that at high altitude there was some kind of winged vehicle. And as he tried to focus his sight zoomed in until he could see the vehicle up close. The aircraft seem to be utilizing the law of physics principle of aerodynamics 'lift' effect with a standard law of motion using a form of crude technology of rapid-spinning-turbine air-breathing engines to propel itself forward at high velocity. Primitive technology, but clever all the same. Obviously this planet was inhabited by an intelligent race. There were plenty of alien humanoid species throughout the galaxy that by a fluke of planetary evolution looked exactly the same as kryptonians.
He will need to investigate. Though if their other vehicles are as primitive as the aircraft that he could see up in the sky then he doubted that these people would have the interstellar travel to send him back to Krypton.
It was then that the wrist device that he was wearing began to give off a beeping sound. He looked at the device on his wrist. It was the metal cuff that his mother always wore on her wrist. He took hold of the purple Crystal and pulled it off the cuff. It was then a holographic display just a few inches in width in writing.
It said, 'stab the crystal into the ground'.
This must be his mother's plan. He had seen the crystal in his mother's laboratory but he didn't know what it was for.
Shrugging his shoulders he bent down and stuck the purple Crystal into the soft dirt beneath the gravel and grass.
He waited a few moments until the crystal began to move down and was then swallowed up by the ground. He waited about another minute. Then the ground began to shake. Then slowly all around him columns and pillars of rock and Crystal began to come out of the ground. He knew what this was. This was the Kryptonian technology manipulating the growth of crystals. The purple Crystal that he stuck into the ground was programmed to quite literally grow a building.
The crystal was taking the raw materials around itself to construct the building. A wide variety of minerals and metals were abundant in the ground all around him. Everything that the crystal growth technology needs.
It was more than an hour later. But finally the crystal growth stopped and the structure was complete.
He had waited outside while the building had constructed itself. But now he began to enter. The place was as big as a football stadium, and nearly just as high, but from the outside it looked like just another small Mountain as camouflage to the surrounding area. Inside were beams and columns and pillars a in criss-crossing formation support structure.
He recognized the technology that had been grown. There was power generation, food processors, bathing and waste disposal area, and a sleeping area with soft surface furniture.
As he explored the inside of the structure he then saw what appeared to be a control console. He walked over to it. On the console there was some crystals and flashing lights as well as what seemed to be a handprint indentation. Both guessing the obvious and having a rudimentary knowledge of the technology he placed his hand on the handprint scanner.
An automated voice then spoke out of the console.
"DNA match confirmed; Marcus-Kor."
Then from another part of the console a small compartment then produced the same purple Crystal as before.
There was another part of the console that had a groove indentation similar to that of a human ear. He looked at the wrist device that he was wearing and he saw his mother's ear piece on it. He withdrew the ear piece and then inserted it into the console. There was then a visual display on the console that prompted him to insert the purple Crystal. He took the crystal, where then he looked around the console and found what he believed was supposed to be a key port that would fit the crystal. He inserted it.
Another five seconds of the computer compiling the data and then a holographic display appeared. It was a holographic image of his mother Diana-Kor.
"Mother?"
"Marcus-Kor my son. Are you all right?"
"More or less." said Marcus-Kor. "What happened Mother? Where am I?"
"Those are logical questions my son." said Diana. "In answer to your current location, you're on the planet Earth."
'Earth?' Thought Marcus. He had heard of Earth. But he didn't have an extensive knowledge on the planet. But that the planet was inhabited by a race of primitive humanoids that were similar in appearance to kryptonians.
"If the chronometers are correct, you left Krypton 39 years ago. And if I know correctly, you are in fact the last son of Krypton. There may have been a handful of our people who were off-world during its destruction, but they will have scattered."
"Destruction, what destruction?"
"Our planet, my son, is destroyed. Our planet had been dying for quite some time."
Marcus fell to the ground and his face turned to a look of sadness.
"What happened?" he said with despair.
"You are aware that our government harvested our molten core to feed the never ending demands for energy."
"Yes."
"What you do not know is that it made the core unstable. It disrupted our magnetic field. Our seismic stability became unstable. The planet's core was quite literally was a ticking time bomb."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to worry you. And I also had a plan to save it."
"What was this plan?"
"I'm not programmed to answer that question."
"Why?"
"I'm not programmed to answer that question either."
"I don't understand."
"I am not your real mother." said the hologram of Diana-Kor. "I am merely a carbon copy of her stored consciousness."
"So while you are fully Interactive you can only answer the right questions?" he asked.
"More or less. There are some things in conversation that I can adapt to but as for the questions that you just asked I cannot answer those ones."
"Fair enough."
"I have sent you to Earth because I believed that you would be safe here. You will need to make a home for yourself. This facility that you see around you, I created it for you. This is your 'Cavern of Knowledge'. From here you will be able to produce food, clothing, equipment, materials, anything you need. There's a shield generator for protection, though you are in a secluded location where humans rarely venture, if ever. But you might want to find company. The natives of this planet, humans, they look like kryptonians, at least anatomically. You will need to be able to blend in. Not just look like them but act like them as well. I will teach you. At this facility you will also be able to produce counterfeit human currency. It will pass as real to their financial experts. It is technically illegal. But then again, your foreign citizenship here on this world may also be. But first I believe you may have already felt the effects of the Sun."
"What effect?"
"On Krypton our species evolved to develop extraordinary abilities under the bright yellow Rays given off by a star of mostly burning hydrogen. Krypton used to have a yellow sun as our species evolved. But our sun began to die. Our sun depleted its supply of hydrogen and began to burn the heavier elements therefore leaving us without powers. But to this day we still possess these abilities under any other yellow sun. Here on Earth you Marcus have great powers."
"So far, I can fly, superhuman strength, super hearing, and I can see through solid objects, as well as see things from far away."
"That is but five of more than 100 different abilities. Your abilities should also include lightning fast speed, and invulnerability. Should you be forced to defend yourself, you will have the power of a god. Do with these Powers as you see fit. But, be warned my son, you must never hurt these humans. It is imperative that you neither kill these humans, nor inflict any physical injury. For they will fear you. Even if your intentions are good, they will fear you. It is imperative that you do not make enemies of these humans. For even if you do in front of them a thousand good deeds, and then commit just one bad deed, those thousand good deeds will be forgotten."
"Are they hostile?"
"They suffer from extreme prejudice and xenophobia. Don't get them wrong though, they can be a great people, they intend to be, though they can be arrogant and oscillate between periods of Enlightenment and tyranny. At present they are currently at a Crossroads; their politicians are corrupt, though they are trying. If they do not fight with each other they will fight with you. But you must prove to them that you are trustworthy. You must prove to them that you would never hurt them."
"I need time to think."
"Of course. You just lost your world after all, and me. But should you need my guidance you can call upon me at any time. Take all the time you need to reflect and Ponder. Perhaps a hot bath and a hot meal."
She directed him towards the kitchen and bathroom area.
"One more thing. The wrist device that you wear on your left wrist. Tap it with your right hand and it will cover your body, as well as your eyes with an indestructible Crystal fibre fabric that will protect your body and conceal your identity. As well as any other clothing that your mind can conjure up. It will also act as a personal shield. Good night my son. Talk in the morning."
Then she disappeared and left him to be alone with his thoughts.
He took his mother's advice and prepared for himself his favourite meal from the food synthesizer and then took a hot bath. He felt better. He felt refreshed. And he had a fresh perspective. But he was still a child and he still felt the childlike desire to run off some energy.
He stepped out the front entrance of the cavern and with a thought took flight. He flew higher this time confident that his ability of flight was not going to fail him at a random moment. He flew higher than the tallest mountain. He looked around. It really was a beautiful world. The vegetation went on as far as the eye could see in every direction.
Memorizing the location of the cavern he shot off at several hundred miles an hour in a random direction. He flew for about a minute until he saw what seemed to be a human settlement. Curious, he landed on the ground near the outskirts.
He then sprinted in the direction of the town and found that he could run significantly faster than he could on Krypton. He pushed himself harder without feeling any physical fatigue and just like when he was flying ran at several hundred miles an hour. But he did not run into anything. He seemed to have reaction time as fast as his sprinting. Anything near him that went by him in a fraction of a second he was able to run around it easily.
He reached the outskirts of the town. He saw a sign at the road that was leading into the town. The sign read the words, 'Wecome to Williams Lake'.
"Hey?" said a feminine voice off to the left.
He turned and was greeted by a young human female around his age. He was in shock. She was by far the most beautiful female that he had ever seen. Her hair was a dark brown that went down below her shoulders with a streak of bright green dyed down the side. Her eyes were a tint of light green. Her skin was pale white with just a hint of pink flush. She was not like the airbrushed pages of fashion magazines, no, but rather she had a natural look that was pretty, which Marcus thought looked better.
"Hello." he greeted back.
"I haven't seen you around here before." she said with curious interest.
"I'm new around here." he said matter-of-factly.
"I'm Elizabeth." she said and she stuck her hand out.
As the seconds ticked on and she held her hand there he looked at it wondering what it signified. This was some kind of physical greeting gesture that was obvious, but what was he supposed to do, was he supposed to hold his own hand out in the same posture, or was he supposed to take her hand? He did not know these humans' customs. To do the gesture incorrectly may be offensive. He decided to take the gamble on taking hold of the girl's hand.
She then shook it.
"Nice to meet you." she said with a smile.
"Likewise." he responded.
But since she had given him her name he was wondering if he was required to give her his. Should he use his own name, or should he make up some kind of alias.
With a fraction of a second he cast around for inspiration.
"William Park." he said to her.
"Nice to meet you William." said Elizabeth. "And nice get up."
He did not understand the meaning of her words. When she said 'nice get up', that was just nonsense to him.
"I'm sorry, what?" he said to get her to clarify.
He felt like his ignorance would make him look foolish but he was going to have to learn sometime.
"Your outfit."
He looked down at the clothes that he was wearing. He was wearing loose blue trousers of a synthesized fabric and his shirt was a synthetic microfiber white of a Standard Kryptonian style. So now that he thought about it perhaps his clothing was strange to the humans. He looked at the girl's clothing, she was wearing trousers of some sturdy blue tightly woven material that hugged her hips closely. Her shoes were practical but of no design that he had ever seen before, and her shirt was of a soft cotton fabric that hugged her torso tightly, though he could see on the shirt the outline of some undergarments that were tightly binding her developing breasts.
"I am trying out a variety of different styles." he said, hoping that his claim would be believable.
"No that's cool. I like people with unique tastes." she said with a smile. "How long have you lived in Williams Lake?"
"I actually live a few miles outside of town." he said matter-of-factly.
"Coolness." she said with a smile. "Maybe we'll see each other around."
"Likewise." he replied.
"Or perhaps I could show you around town right now?" she offered.
It was just then that his sensitive hearing was bombarded by the sound of a loud klaxon. He looked in the direction of the sound and he could see trail of smoke over the tops of the buildings.
"My baby!" said the sound of a woman screaming in panic. "My baby is in there!"
Suddenly his ability to see through solid objects turned on as he could then hear the sound of a screaming baby. He saw through all of the buildings to a house that was ablaze with flames. He saw right into a room on the upper level of the north corner of the house where there was an infant in a crib that was screaming with smoke all around.
"Oh my God!" he said with deep concern. "Someone should do something!"
"The fire department is on top of it. They'll take care of everything." said Elizabeth.
"But the fire is spreading!" said Marcus. "They won't get to the child in time!"
Now it was Elizabeth that didn't understand what he was talking about.
Heeding his mother's warning about identity concealment, "excuse me." he said to Elizabeth.
And then at barely faster than human speed he dashed out of sight.
He tapped the wrist device that he was wearing and then the wrist device began to unfold and spread across his arm. And then up his upper arm. And then over his shoulder and then around his neck and down his torso and his other arm and his legs, and then the mask appeared over his eyes. And then from his neck and shoulders down his back appeared a cape. His cape was gold while his mask was silver and the rest of his suit was a combination of gold and silver in different places. On his chest bore the coat of arms of his family, the house of Kor.
With single-minded Focus on the fact that he had the ability to save the child and no one else did he took flight and then he flew to the burning house. He broke through the bedroom window. He was surrounded by flames. He felt no heat. The baby's crib had not caught fire yet and the child was still alive. With the instinct of trying to blow out a candle he puckered his lips and exhaled hard and a white gas of freezing Arctic wind froze the fire all around him.
'Curious? I didn't know I could do that?' he thought to himself.
He was careful not to harm the child. He then grabbed the child out of the crib and he flew out of the window holding the child tightly in his arms.
He then paused as he hovered in the air several metres off of the ground at the second story window's level.
Firefighters and people all around were looking at him in awe as they also took pictures of him with handheld devices.
"Is that Superman?" asked one guy.
"No, the suit is all wrong. And he's way too young." said another guy.
"My baby!" screamed the woman on the ground in distress as one of the firefighters was trying to keep her from running into the building.
He lowered himself to the ground and handed the child to the woman.
"The child inhaled some smoke." he told the woman. "But I believe it is uninjured."
He referred to the child as 'it' as he was not entirely sure of the child's gender by facial appearance. Though now that he thought about it he could probably use his x-ray vision to just look through the child's clothing but he didn't feel that would be very appropriate.
"Thank you!" said the mother as she held the child to her tightly though the child was then taken from her by paramedics that wanted to check the baby out.
"You are a hero."
"I just knew that the baby was going to die and I couldn't allow it to happen." said Marcus.
"Who are you?"
He didn't think it was a good idea to give his alias. He then contemplated giving his real name. But in the end he decided on, no name.
"Just someone who was happy to help." he said with a tone of humility.
And then he took flight shooting off into the sky is super speed.
