Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUELS

Duel 003: Let the Light Shine On - Part 2

The duel between Lukas and Nelson began as their audience stood by to watch. However, while Nelson was primed and ready, Lukas was a bit surprised to see the Lightsworn cards in his deck transformed into cards he never saw before. His Kuriboh looked at him with worry.

LUKAS: 4000

NELSON: 4000

"Okay…calm down, Lukas. You can figure this out. I don't know HOW my cards magically changed like this, but…maybe it's for the best. This could prove useful. Just read the text before you go playing the card." he thought. As he read his hand of cards, Alice looked on from the side.

"What's he doing? He hasn't made a move yet." Alice thought "Is…Is there nothing he can use?" Luckily, she watched as he drew a card from his hand.

"All right. For starters, I'll place this monster face down." Lukas said as a set card appeared "Then, I'll lay this face down as well." Another card appeared, face down, on his side.

"Your move, Nelson." he said while Alice sighed with relief. Nelson smirked.

"All right then. I hope you're ready for a little carnage. My turn! I draw!" he called, drawing a card. He then glanced to Snipe Hunter, both grinning at each other.

"With that, I use my Deck Master's special ability!" he called. Lukas and Alice gasped.

"Whoa! Already?!" Lukas asked. Nelson snickered as Snipe Hunter leapt into the air and, while drawing his pistol, a spinning dice block appeared over his head.

"Once a turn, I roll a die. And if its number comes up as one, three or five…you lose a card in your hand. If its an even number, I instead get to dish out five hundred points of damage onto your life points instead! So it's a win for me either way!" he chuckled. All eyes were on the spinning dice until it eventually came to a stop, landing on a five.

"Heh heh! Looks like you're losing a card, chump! Go get 'em, Snipe Hunter!" he yelled. The monster laughed before firing his pistol at Lukas' hand, sniping the left most card from his hand. The card he was forced to give up was Solar Recharge.

"Geez. This is my first Deck Master duel and already this happens. I better be prepared for next time." he thought, sending his card away. Nelson smirked.

"Following that up is this card! I activate the Spell card known as "Shredding Destruction"!" he called. His partner looked on with a confident smile.

"Now, whenever a card on your field is destroyed, I get to hit you for five hundred points of damage. And TRUST ME. My deck has plenty of cards ready to rip yours apart." Nelson explained "Like THIS! I summon Phantom Hunter "X"!" Appearing on the field was a shadowy cloaked figure, dressed as a desparado and carried a gun in one hand. His eyes flashed a red shade.

Phantom Hunter "X"
DARK - Lv. 4 - Fiend-Type Effect Monster - ATK: 1700 | DEF: 800
Once per turn, when this card destroys a face-down monster in battle, it inflicts 500 damage to the opponent.

Lukas and Kuriboh watched as the hunter took aim at his set monster.

"But before I attack, I'll add this card to the mix. I equip Blitzkrieg Stimulant onto my Phantom Hunter! This stacks him up with another one thousand attack points!" he called, playing another card. The moment he felt the energy overtake him, the hunter let out a yell as he powered up to 2700 attack points.

"Why? Unless that monster has some ability to deal me piercing damage, I don't see the point." Lukas thought. The hunter drew his pistol out, lining up his shot at Lukas' card.

"Do it Phantom Hunter! Attack his face-down monster!" he yelled. A lightning fast dark bullet was shot, piercing clean through Lukas' set monster. But when the card was shattered, a flash of light appeared and out leapt a small white wolf that chomped down on Phantom Hunter's arm, causing them both to shatter.

"W-What the..?!" Nelson yelled. Lukas smirked.

"I'm guessing you're the "Shoot first and ask later" kind of guy. So I had this waiting for you. My face down monster was Ryko, the Enlightsworn Agent!" he shouted. A silhouette of Ryko appeared on Lukas' field, letting out a few barks.

Ryko, the Enlightsworn Agent
LIGHT - Lv. 2 - Beast-Type Flip Effect - ATK: 500 | DEF: 600
When Ryko is flipped face up, it destroys all cards the opponent controls that are in the same column as it. Any monster destroyed by this effect, however, are banished instead.

Nelson groaned at the lost of his card, watching as Phantom Hunter phazed away and his equip spell destroyed. Meanwhile, Ryko's illusionary form turned to Lukas.

"Heh heh! We got 'em REAL good there!"

Lukas was taken back a bit by his monster speaking to him before vanishing.

"What…was that?" he thought.

"All right, Lukas!" Alice thought, making a fist. Nelson glared angrily back.

"Not bad…but that doesn't mean MY monster's effect doesn't go off! So take this!" Nelson yelled. A negative red energy enveloped Lukas, electrifying him briefly. He stumbled back onto the ground.

LUKAS: 4000 - 500 = 3500

NELSON: 4000

"And don't forget about my Destruction card! So here's another helping!" he shouted. Lukas took another electrifying shock, losing five hundred more life points.

LUKAS: 3500 - 500 = 3000

NELSON: 4000

"Too bad you won't get to use that effect again anytime soon." Lukas replied, irritating his opponent.

"Whatever, I place two cards face down and end my turn." Nelson replied, sounding bummed out. Lukas rose from the ground before turning to his worried partner.

"Don't worry, Kuriboh. I'm fine. Now that his field is clear of monsters, we can get some payback." he said. Kuriboh nodded with confidence.

"It's my turn, Nelson! Here goes!" he shouted, drawing his card.

"I summon Jain, the Enlightsworn Exalt in attack mode!" he shouted. Appearing in a flash of light was his monster, transformed by the same magic that affected Ryko. He now sported a shiny silver lined cape with the inside colored gold, a more fancy suit of armor and wielded a sword of light.

Jain, the Enlightsworn Exalt
LIGHT - Lv. 5 - Warrior-Type Effect Monster - ATK: 2100 | DEF: 1400
This card can be Special Summoned if the owner does not control any monsters at the moment. If Summoned this way, the controller must send two cards from their Deck to the Graveyard. Once a turn, by discarding a card, Jain can protect another "Lightsworn" monster on the field from destruction until the next Standby Phase.

Snipe Hunter looked on in shock at Lukas' new monster, poised and ready.

"H-Hey man! That's CHEATING! You can't just summon a high leveled card like THAT without sacrificing another monster!" he shouted. Lukas smirked, glancing at his Deck Master.

"I can if I control no other monsters. It's one of Jain's special abilities. The only downside is I have to give up two cards from my deck." he said, sending the top cards away. As he did, he noticed one of them was his Lightsworn Wulf. However, he too was transformed and did not have the effect Lukas hoped for.

"With that cleared up, I now play a Continuous Spell of my own! Enlightened Shrine!" he shouted. Rising up behind him and Jain was a beautiful gold and marble white shrine with a statue of Celestia floating in the middle with her staff in hand.

"Now, during each Standby Phase that either player takes, my card gets a Shine Counter placed on it. What can I do with said counters? Well, you'll have to wait and find out." he said. Nelson lightly growled.

"H-Hey. Don't worry, man. You got this!" his partner called.

"Next, I'll set another monster face down on the field…" Lukas said, playing another card from his hand "…before sending Jain in for some well deserved payback!" Jain yelled before lunging across the field at Nelson.

"Attack, Jain! Shining Resonance Slice" Lukas shouted. With a swing of his blade, Nelson groaned and stuttered backwards slightly.

LUKAS: 3000

NELSON: 4000 - 2100 = 1900

Suddenly, Lukas noticed Kuriboh's wings beginning to shine. A green energy enveloped him, healing his life points slightly. It surprised all around him.

LUKAS: 3000 + 1050 = 4050

NELSON: 1900

"Was that Kuriboh's Deck Master skill?" Alice thought. Lukas turned to him.

"Hey. Did you…?" he asked before his partner nodded.

"Oh! Cool! So, if I deal battle damage, you can restore my life points by half that amount! Awesome! If we keep this up, you're as good as safe!" Lukas shouted with excitement, making a fist with one hand. Kuriboh cheered also while Nelson growled.

"Ain't no WAY I'm losing to some chump like you! We WILL be walking off with that stupid fuzzball and nothing is gonna stop me!" Nelson shouted. Snipe Hunter growled as well while Lukas looked back smugly.

"We'll just have to see. I'll set one more card face down and end my turn." Lukas said. With a look of anger, Nelson drew a card. At the same time, a glowing orb of light appeared above the shrine, indicating a Shine Counter.

"If we're talking about Deck Master abilities, don't forget mine! So take aim, Snipe Hunter!" Nelson shouted. His hunter leapt into the air as the dice appeared and landed on six.

"All right! This means your life points get hit! So take this!" Nelson shouted. Snipe Hunter snickered before firing a lone bullet, striking Lukas' shoulder.

LUKAS: 4050 - 500 = 3550

NELSON: 1900

"Next, I'm activating the spell card "Ammunition Reload"!" he shouted "This lets me shuffle back two cards in my hand to draw two brand new ones!" He made his move swiftly as he then drew two new cards. Looking at them made him sneer.

"I summon Phantom Hunter "Raven"!" he called. His monster materialized before taking to the skies thanks to a pair of crow-like wings on his back.

Phantom Hunter "Raven"
DARK - Lv. 3 - Fiend-Type Effect Monster - ATK: 1100 | DEF: 0
Once per turn, Raven's special ability allows him to place a "Sniper Counter" on a face-up monster the opponent controls. Any monster that is attacked with a Sniper Counter on it loses ATK equal to the number of Counters times 500.

Bringing out its sniper rifle, it marked a red glowing spot on Jain's armor.

"It's okay, Jain. Even if that dumb crow attacks you, you'll still be strong enough to clip his wings." Lukas said. But Nelson smirked.

"Really? Then tell me what happens when I do this! I play my Set card! Hunting Season - OPEN!" he called "This card lets me summon up to two OTHER monsters, one from my hand AND deck, that are the same Attribute and Type as my Raven!" Lukas and Alice gasped as a card emerged from his deck.

"So, from my deck, I'll summon ANOTHER Phantom Hunter "Raven"!" he called, bringing a second copy "And from my hand, I summon Phantom Hunter "Diaboro"!" Appearing inbetween his two Ravens was another warrior that appeared similar to his Phantom Hunter "X" but carried twin revovler guns.

Phantom Hunter "Diaboro"
DARK - Lv. 4 - Fiend-Type Effect Monster - ATK: 1800 | DEF: 400
Once a turn, Diaboro is able to increase the Levels of all other monsters the owner controls by 1 for each Sniper Counter on a monster. If used to Xyz Summon a "Phantom Hunter" card, the summoned card can attack twice the turn it is Summoned.

Nelson used Diaboro's effect to raise the Levels of both his Raven's by 1 before using the newly summoned Raven copy to put another counter on Jain. This would now cause Jain to lose 1000 points if attacked.

"With that done, I now build the overlay network with both my Phantom Hunter Ravens AND my Diaboro!" Nelson shouted. His three monsters became glowing red orbs before taking to the sky.

"With these three monsters, I can summon one of the deadliest shooters in my whole deck!" Nelson laughed "Come forth! Phantom Hunter "Doom Shooter"!" Appearing from the overlay gate was a fiendish monster, slender in frame, carrying an extra long sniper rifle with a skinny barrel. It let out a malicious laugh.

Phantom Hunter "Doom Shooter"
DARK - Rnk. 4 - Fiend-Type Xyz Monster - ATK: 2400 - DEF: 2000
Once per turn, Doom Shooter can use an Xyz Material to force the opponent to discard two cards from their hand. When Doom Shooter attacks a monster with a Sniper Counter on it, the target monster loses 800 ATK per counter.

Nelson began laughing along with Snipe Hunter.

"So, tell me. You nervous yet? Not only do I have the fire power to put your warrior to rest, but you can thank Diaboro also! He can let my Doom Shooter attack BOTH your monsters!" he shouted. Lukas' eyes narrowed.

"You think I'm scared? Fat chance. As long as you're threatening my partner, I have no reason to be scared!" he replied. Alice nodded.

"That's right! You guys are truly some of the WORST I've ever met! So it's about time you got what's coming to you!" she added. Nelson glared at her before letting out a menacing chuckle.

"I'll "get what's coming to me"? Funny. I see that more as a REASON I'm gonna win this duel and take what I want." Nelson said "Maybe this will change your tune. I use an equip spell on my Doom Shooter! Fairy Meteor Crush!" Lukas looked on nervously.

"Oh great. Now I have a reason to worry about him attacking my set card." Lukas thought, glancing briefly at it.

"And just to make sure you don't find some way to BLOCK my attack, I think I'll use this as well. I activate my Trap card, "Shadow Raven Duster!" Nelson continued, playing his second face down.

Shadow Raven Duster
Normal Trap Card
Destroy all Spell and Trap cards your opponent controls. Also, for each card destroyed, the controller sends a card from the top of their Deck to the Graveyard.

A hurricane of raven feathers came rushing at Lukas' field, taking the shape of a large twister, shredding through his Enlightened Shrine and two face down cards. The two face down cards were Breakthrough Skill and Glorious Illusion. At the same time, he watched the twister blow away three more cards from his deck.

"There goes his defense!" Alice thought. Suddenly, she remembered the effect of Nelson's active card.

"Lukas! Look out!" she yelled. Lukas gasped as the same red energy electrocuted him harshly, taking off more of his life points.

LUKAS: 3550 - 1500 = 2050

NELSON: 1900

Kuriboh turned to Lukas, showing signs of panic in its eyes.

"D-Don't worry, Kuriboh. I promise that I WON'T let him get you." he softly replied. But Nelson grew his own devilish smirk.

"Really? Looking at the situation YOU'RE in, I highly doubt that." he replied "Now, I use Doom Shooter's special ability! I give up an Xyz Material to force YOU to lose more cards!" The material phased into Shooter's rifle, firing it straight at him. While the blow did not hurt, it did cause Lukas to lose two more cards in his hand. This move left his hand completely empty.

"You were SAYING?" Nelson mockingly asked. Lukas groaned, looking at his blank hand.

"Let's wrap this up! Doom Shooter! Take out his Lightsworn Exalt first!" he ordered. Doom Shooter fired a fiery red bullet, shattering Jain with one strike. Because of the counters, his attack fell to 1600. The destruction threw Lukas to the ground as his life points took a nose dive.

LUKAS: 2050 - 1900 = 150

NELSON: 1900

"You all right?!" Alice yelled while Nelson laughed.

"It's all over kid. Doom Shooter! Use your second shot to take out his remaining monster!" he yelled. His monster grinned before lining up on his face down. Lukas gasped, remembering the card he set was Dawn Knight, a monster with 1200 defense.

"No! This…This can't be the end for me and Kuriboh! W-We just started!" he thought. But just then, he quickly thought back to when Raven Duster sent three cards of his deck away. For a brief moment, he recognized one of the cards he had seen amidst the chaos. Just as Doom Shooter fired, Lukas used the effect of said card.

"I'm not going down YET, Nelson! I activate the effect of a card YOU helped sent away! Go, Wishful Hanewata!" he called. Nelson gasped as a small fairy appeared on Lukas' field, effectively slowing down time. At the same time, Jain appeared on his field as a ghost.

Wishful Hanewata
LIGHT - Lv. 1 - Fairy-Type Effect Monster - ATK: 0 | DEF: 0
When you are attacked by an opponent's monster, you can banish this card to regain life points equal to the ATK of 1 other LIGHT monster in your Graveyard.

Lukas was able to quickly regain 2100 life points just before Doom Shooter's attack pierced through his card, revealing his Dawn Knight. The monster groaned as it shattered to pieces.

LUKAS: 150 + 2100 - 1200 = 1050
NELSON: 1900

After the chaos unfolded, all eyes were on Lukas as he hurried to get to his feet, still feeling the impact of everything thrown at him.

"S-Sheesh. Good thing…I remembered I had THAT card." he thought, successfully standing up. Nelson growled.

"Why you…you….you….How DARE you ruin my PERFECT takedown!" Nelson yelled. Lukas looked to him and chuckled.

"Like. I. Said. You're NOT getting my partner. I won't stop as long as I have the means to keep fighting!" he shouted. Nelson's anger began to boil, a vein pulsing atop his head. His partner took notice.

"Whoa whoa! Nelson! Calm down, man!" he called. But Nelson turned to him, seething anger on his face.

"SHUT UP! Do you realize how AWESOME that would've been if he hadn't RUINED it?!" he yelled.

"Y-Yeah. B-B-But remember…the kid's got nothing in his hand. All you have to do is wait one more turn and you win." he nervously replied. Alice surveyed the area, taking a brief glance at both duelists.

"I can't just sit here. I have to do something." she thought. She quietly begun sneaking away, making a break for it while Nelson was still fueled by his anger. She was able to make it out of the lot. She ran as fast as she could until she was in an area where her cell phone had regained its signal.

"There we go! Finally!" she thought, screeching to a stop. Pausing to catch her breath, she quickly dialed a number on her phone and brought it to her ear.

~ Meanwhile… ~

With no one acknowledging Alice's disappearance, the duel continued onward as Lukas and Nelson locked eyes again.

"Since you destroyed my Dawn Knight by battle, I can now send one light attribute monster from my deck to the graveyard. And the card I choose is this one…my Lightsworn Rogue, Rinyan." he said. Glancing at the card briefly, Lukas saw Rinyan was not affected by the same power as the others. But he recalled losing Lyla and Celestia, both affected by this power, to the graveyard also when the Duster ripped its way through. Though he was at boiling point, Nelson slowly regained his composure by taking slow momentary breaths.

"N-Not bad…surviving that." he muttered "You bought yourself ONE turn." He then chuckled menacingly.

"No matter what you draw, it's all over. So hurry it up….LOSER." he continued. Lukas groaned.

"Nothing's over, Nelson, until every possibility has been used up. I believe in my cards still…and belief can go a long way…especially if you're fighting for something important." he said, Kuriboh cooing softly. He slowly put his hand atop his deck, ready to draw.

"Please, if anyone is listening….help me. I…don't want Kuriboh to get hurt. I…I can't let it happen. So….please….heart of the cards….guide me." he thought. He then closed his eyes, worried to look at what he would draw. But as he started his turn, the sun symbol from the previous night manifested itself on his drawing hand. Time seemed to slow down as it emitted a soothing light, unnoticeable by Nelson or his partner.

"A true duelist can change the outcome of ANY duel with a single draw!
So as long as you don't surrender, neither will your deck!"

A voice called out to him from within his mind as he drew his card. At the same time, a brief gust of wind surged around his feet. It sent a partial shockwave in Nelson's direction, bringing a look of fright upon his monster as he could not believe what was happening either. He stumbled briefly, fighting to keep his balance.

"W-What's….happening? What's going on?!" Nelson thought. As the storm around him calmed, Lukas eyed the card he drew. And, to his surprise, he could feel a new confidence swirling up inside him. But all the while, he remained oblivious to the glowing mark on his hand. Without a word, he slapped the card on his duel disk. What appeared next was a beam of light rising up from behind him, towering above everything. It was so large that even Alice could notice from where she was. At the dueling site, Nelson could see a pair of eyes glaring back at him from within this radiant beam. They emitted a radiant ruby color, giving a look that left him frozen in fear. The light suddenly vanished, revealing a massive silver furred dragon standing at Lukas' side.

"N-No way! T-That's….!" Nelson's partner stuttered. Lukas slowly raised his head, facing Nelson once more, as his giant dragon snarled.

"Still thinking one draw doesn't matter? Well, I think my FRIEND has something to say about that. So say hello….to JUDGMENT DRAGON!" he called, his monster letting out a massive roar that shook the very ground around them. Again, even from her location, Alice could hear the dragon's roar as she looked back in surprise with eyes widened.

"W-What in the…?" she thought.
