San Francisco, California
A string of violent deaths led Sam, Dean and I to travel to the Golden Coast. People were being found dead on the streets, almost like they were attacked by a monster of some kind. We soon got word of a lawyer who's secretary found him violently killed in the same matter as the other reports.
I did what I could to be a professional, but it was really hard watching the secretary, who's name is Madison, gives Sam the "look," the same one that I've caught Rosemary give him multiple times at the hideout. This time, though, Sam didn't stop her. He was obviously also attracted to her as was Dean.
I had to clear my throat several times to Sam and Dean, trying to remind them that we were both on a case. However, I was mainly doing it to get Sam to stop giving Madison attention.
Yes, I'll admit it; I'm jealous. The worst part is I don't want to use my abilities to get Madison to back off because I knew that was wrong.
I just had to let it happen, and my God did it kill me...
"You think it may be possible that your ex boyfriend killed your boss?" I asked.
Madison sighed. "I don't know," she said, "He has been stalking me since the break up..."
"Was...was he violent towards you?"
She gave me a slow nod, and all of my jealousy towards her began to fade. I began to grow sympathetic towards her situation, so I took her hand and gave her a little smile.
I felt her relax and gave me a sad smile back. "People just don't know when to take no for an answer."
"Yeah," Madison said, "It's why I focused more on my work. I needed to become independent but...even then he still finds his way back to me."
"Well, that's his fault. He's a shitty man who needs to make other people feel weaker so he can feel stronger. It's...pathetic."
"I'm guessing you had your fair share of this."
"Not this far, but...my folks died when I turned 18. I began to sleep around...both with men and women. However, the first few times I tried to start something more...they would only see me as a good lay and nothing more. At first I let them think of me that way just to keep them in my life...but after I gained feelings for the next person...I just left. I was scared of the heartbreak."
Madison gave me a sympathetic look and nodded. She genuinely felt bad for me, and this caused my guilt for the earlier jealousy to worsen. Sam wasn't mine and she didn't know that I was falling in love with him.
"Why are you telling me this?" she asked.
"Well...you did kind of ask," I said chuckling.
She smirked and laughed a bit. "Yeah...I guess I kind of did," she said.
"Hey, Alice?" Sam said.
Alice was my fake name for the investigation.
Sam crooked his finger to me, letting me know that the three of us needed to talk privately.
I nodded and looked back at Madison. "Hold on," I said, "Think my partners found something."
I got up from the chair and met with Sam and Dean in the living room. "You guys have any ideas?" I asked.
"Yep..." Dean said, "Werewolf."
"Wait, really?"
"You seem surprised," Sam said.
"No it's just...you both don't come up with conclusions that quickly usually," I said, "We usually need to really research this before we settle on an agreement."
"I don't think this needs any research because of how obvious it is," Dean said.
"Yeah, you got a point. Well...it certainly explains why the bodies look so mutilated. I thought for a second it may have been a demon because of the claw marks...but this looked more than some demon attack."
"Can you...detect werewolves like you can with entities?" Sam asked.
I shook my head. "Unfortunately, no. Werewolves are out of my area. They aren't really spirits. The most I can do is, if the werewolf kills someone, I can detect the pain, but even then it's not a guarantee that the person will become a spirit. They could either move on to the other side quickly or not die immediately. I could also detect a possible change in emotions since transformations can be painful, but I don't know how long it'll be before I'm cut off from them."
"Well...either way we think we know who it is," Dean said.
"I think I do as well...the ex," I said, "It would explain why her boss was found the way he was. If the ex was violent and controlling, he's going to do everything he can to screw around with her."
"Yeah..." Sam said, "I think...one of us should keep watch for the evening while two of us go out and find this werewolf."
"Wait...one of..." It suddenly dawned on me. "You...you both can't be serious?? You want to stay the night in the hopes of getting laid???"
Dean shrugged while Sam glared at him a bit. That's EXACTLY what was happening right now.
"Dudes...for once can you control yourselves and keep your pants on?? I mean...yeah Madison is cute and all but you don't see me jumping at the opportunity to throw myself at her!"
"In my defense, Dean is the one who jumps at the opportunity," Sam said.
"I'm guessing this time you aren't going down with a fight," Dean said.
"Dude, you always get the chance...can't I have it just this once?" Sam said.
I huffed in frustration. "I'm...not staying for...this. I'll be outside by the car while you two figure this out."
I walked away before Sam and Dean could say anything. I peaked in on Madison in the dining room. "I've got another call coming in," I said, "It was nice to meet you."
Madison smiled back at me. "You too, Alice."
I waited outside by the Impala, praying to whatever was up there that this little "conflict" on who got to stay the night would be in Dean's favor.
As much as I liked Madison, I did NOT want her to have Sam. Dean could provide just as much, right?
I soon heard the apartment building door open...and my heart broke.
Dean unlocked the car and I got in with him. I knew that he lost because they decided to rock paper scissors over it.
Damnit Dean for always picking scissors.
I swallowed my pride and my jealousy, hoping Dean didn't see my disappointment when he came out. "So, where do we go from here?" I asked.
"Well, we better wait until the sun goes down a bit more," he said, "Then we see if we can find Kurt and stop him before he changes."
"Sounds good."
Dean looked over at me, his face full of confusion. "You okay there, kid?" he asked, "You've been...off since we started this case."
"Dean...I'm fine. I just...don't worry about it."
Dean seemed to get the hint and started up the car. We drove nearby Kurt's place of residency and parked not too far from the building. By the time we got there, it was dark out and the moon was beginning to rise.
His emotions I felt shifted to both a feeling of concern and annoyance. He was debating on whether or not to push the topic regarding Sam.
"Look...Dean," I said, "I can still feel your emotions. If you got something to say, just say it."
Dean sighed. "I know you think I don't know, but I'm pretty good at picking up cues when it comes to women. I know you're jealous and unhappy that Sam is spending the night with Madison."
"Dean..."
"No," he interrupted, "Just...why the hell are you doing this to yourself, Sarah?"
"It's not that simple," I said, "And I remember telling you this before. Besides, you could've standed your ground better and told Sam that you were staying the night and that's final."
"Oh, so now your pinning this on me? I seem to remember you not wanting to do something about it, and Sam's stubborn so he would've wanted a reason if I fought too hard."
I shook my head. "Whatever. Just drop it."
"No, because..." Dean said.
I let out a little hiss and glared at him. "I said...Drop. It," I said through gritted teeth.
He was taken aback by my response, but thankfully he did as I said. "This conversation isn't over, though," he said.
I rolled my eyes but suddenly, I felt a change in mood. It didn't belong to Dean. This was something else, and it was a lot stronger.
I felt...distressed. There was also a hint of pain. I immediately looked forward and realized where the manifesting was coming from.
"What? What is it?" Dean asked.
I looked over at him. "Get the silver bullets and knives," I said, "I think Kurt is turning. I'm sensing both distress and pain."
Dean looked at me wide eyed but quickly got out of the car as I did the same. Going to the trunk, we both got out the proper weapons and headed towards the building.
We headed up to Kurt's apartment and Dean quickly tried to get the door unlocked. However, the feelings of distress and pain were gone. The only emotions I sensed were Dean's and my own.
"Dean..." I said.
"What?"
"Hurry. Kurt...I can't sense him anymore."
This caused Dean to hurry up on picking the locks because he knew that if I was cut off like that easily, it was getting deadly.
Finally, the door opened and we both tip toed inside, our guns out and ready to fire when needed. We looked around and eventually came across a dead body with a figure on top of it.
Looking at the body, I saw who it was.
Kurt.
Wait...if that was Kurt...then who is on top of him...
The figure turned around and snarled at Dean. We both were in shock as we saw who the culprit was.
Madison.
She lunged at Dean, snapping and trying to claw him. I shot a bullet but only grazed her shoulder, causing her to yelp in pain. Madison turned to me and growled, getting ready to pounce on me. Dean took this opportunity to cut her arm with his knife. He tried to pin her down to go for the kill but she got the upper hand and ran out.
We both looked at each other, stunned at what just happened. How can it be Madison when she was the one who was in the most distress? It finally dawned on me.
"Dean...I don't think she knows she's a werewolf," I said.
I read through John's journal, hoping that I could find a different option that didn't involve killing Madison. Sam and Dean were both going to try to tell her the truth about what's going on, which I thought was a horrible idea as she wouldn't believe us.
She may be the werewolf, but she's not going to remember anything when she's transformed. It's close to a demon possession, but even with demons you can still remember parts of that time period, like your in the backseat of a car and unable to control whatever happens because you're not the driver.
I heard the motel door unlock and Sam and Dean came back. Both looked rather frustrated but Sam also had a hint of disappointment in his face.
"I'm guessing she didn't take it well, huh?" I asked.
"Nope," Dean said, "Pretty much threw us out of the house and told us to never come back... the same reaction when I tell a woman I don't want anything serious."
I rolled my eyes and looked back at the book. "Well...I haven't been able to find anything in your father's book. I'm trying REALLY hard, though. I really don't want to have someone killed because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time."
Dean scoffed. "Yeah, I'm sure you're looking REALLY hard."
I glared at him, throwing John's journal at Dean.
"Hey! Be careful with that!" Sam shouted.
I looked to him. "Sam...wait outside for a bit," I said.
He looked confused by this but walked out without question. I turned to Dean and stormed over to him, smacking him upside the head.
"Ow!" he said.
"That comment was a dick thing to say! Have you no shame??"
"Well, I'm sorry that the jealousy monster who has a hold on you and is making me not trust your research skills at the moment!"
Next thing I knew, my hand smacked him right across the face, leaving a bit of a red print on his right cheek. I was furious and a part of me felt bad for that sudden move, but he had no right to talk to me like that.
"You REALLY think I'm that much of a bitch!?" I screamed, "You really think that I'm going to allow an innocent woman get killed just like that?? I may be jealous that she keeps giving Sam those bedroom eyes, but I'm not that shallow! You know just as much as I do that there's probably no other way we could do this, and I hate that she got dragged into this! You have NO right to accuse me of not putting in my 100% and you are to NEVER talk to me like that EVER again! You understand me, Winchester??"
Dean looked at me with shock by my outburst but I could feel his guilt for what he said. Tears streamed down my face and I was shaking with fury.
"I'm sorry for smacking you like that, but..." I said.
"No, don't apologize," he said, "I did deserve that, and...if anyone should be sorry, it's me. I know you're trying. Just...yesterday when you hissed at me like that...it scared me."
"Not an excuse."
"I know it isn't. I never seen this side of you, though, at least not with me or Sam. I'm...I'm really sorry, Sarah."
I felt Dean's guilt take over him as he looked at me, tears starting to form for him but he quickly tried to wipe them away to keep me from noticing.
"I know you are," I said, "Your guilt is really strong right now. I'm angry right now, but I think I can forgive you in time."
He nodded. "I wouldn't blame you if you held it over my head for a bit," he said.
I wiped away my tears and cleaned myself up a bit. I told Sam it was okay to come back in and he still looked confused at me and Dean.
"What was that all about?" he said.
"Sam...we need to be honest with you," I said.
"What about?" he asked.
I couldn't do it. I couldn't break the news on Madison and what we had to do to stop the werewolf attacks. I turned over to Dean, pleading with my eyes for him to tell and not me.
Dean nodded and turned to Sam. "We...we don't think we can save Madison," he said.
Sam got wided eye at that statement. "What?"
"Sam...I don't think...there's any way," I said, "I'm sorry but..."
"No no no," Sam said, "We are NOT killing her. End of discussion."
"Sammy, we don't want to but..." Dean said.
"No! There has to be another way!" Sam shouted, "We can't...we just can't!"
"If you have any other ideas, we're all ears!" Dean said, "But Sam...you think if Dad knew a way to help a werewolf he would have it written down??"
"Dad didn't hesitate to kill!" Sam snapped, "We're not going to be like him!!"
Sam turned to me, tears threatening to spill. "Sarah...please," he said.
The plea in his voice is what broke me a bit. I didn't know what else to say. A mix of jealousy and sadness began to overtake me, but I knew that Madison at least deserved a chance to live.
"Find what you can at the library," I said, "I'll try to talk to Madison myself."
Sam nodded and Dean looked at me with a surprised look. Once Sam left to look for some answers, Dean grabbed me by the arm.
"What the hell was that?" he said.
"Dean...if there is another way we can help...the least we can do is try to find it," I said.
Dean looked at me with a bit of concern, wondering if I shouldn't have gotten Sam's hopes up.
However, he knew just as much as I did that there was possibly another way to do this.
2 days later
We found a lore that says that if the original werewolf that bit Madison was killed, she will be saved as the cycle will be broken. It was worth a shot.
It took her a lot of convincing, but she agreed to let Sam stay the night while Dean and I went to look for the werewolf who bit her, whom she revealed was her next door neighbor.
We managed to find him going after a sex worker and got the upper hand, but before Dean could put a bullet in him, the werewolf used his sharp claws to leave marks on my arm. It wasn't deep, but it was going to show up as a scar later on.
Once we figured out the werewolf was dead, Dean dropped me off at the motel so I can heal up while he went to go check up on Sam and Madison. I took out the first aid kit to clean my arm up and put a wrap around it so it doesn't get infected. The arm I could still move without too much issue, thankfully. I've had times where it was so bad that I couldn't move it at all without some kind of pain.
Once I finished dressing my arm, I got a text message from Dean.
Staying with Sam and Madison to make sure she doesn't turn. Will be back later on.
I texted him back an "okay" before laying down in my bed. I was exhausted as I have only gotten maybe 4 hours of sleep this week. I felt myself slowly drift off into a peaceful slumber.
That is...it was peaceful until I heard really loud banging that startled me awake.
I was about to head to the door when Dean reached it before me.
Wait...when did Dean come back?
If he's back...then where's...
Sam appeared in the doorway, completely out of breath.
"She changed," he said.
Dean's eyes widened and next thing I knew, we were all in the Impala. I was confused at first on what was going on, but then it hit me.
Sam speant the night with Madison...and she changed into a werewolf.
The cycle theory didn't work...meaning Madison had to die.
However, something I noticed when Sam came in was his neck...covered in bruises.
Not bruises...hickeys.
He did it with her.
He did it with someone that wasn't me.
A sharp pain went through my stomach as I felt my heart shatter for the third time since we started this case. I held back my tears and sat in the back quietly, worried that if I was going to talk that I was going to say something I really regretted later. The jealousy was taking a huge toll on me mixed with a feeling of guilt. This wasn't the time to feel jealous, but it was there and its grip on me was strong.
Yet, I knew what was going to happen. Madison had to be killed.
That's where the guilt came in, as Sam was obviously hurting so much. I was being selfish and I hated myself the entire car ride for feeling this way.
