Veronica yawned widely as she walked into the kitchen. Pony greeted her and jumping around while trying to lick her mistress' face. She laughed and pushed the dog away, while greeted her boyfriend. "Morning."
Logan was cooking in the kitchen, and he handed her a cup of coffee. "Morning. Do you want some pancakes?"
Veronica kissed his cheek and inhaled her coffee. "Hmm. Yes, please." Pony trotted away and plopped herself in front of the TV, watching a nature channel. "Did you feed her?"
"Yes. And now I'm gonna feed you."
"Thank you, Lieutenant." She plopped herself on the couch and changed the channel. Pony barked in protest when her favorite show was changed. "What? It's just squirrels in the woods." Pony climbed into the sofa and licked Veronica's hand, whining while doing it. The dog then pushed her body to Veronica's. "Pony! Don't sit on me! Fine, I'll change it back!"
Pony was a big black dog, some sort of a mix between a Newfoundland and a Labrador. Right now, the dog was as big as Veronica. Logan called Pony with a stern voice. "Pony. Behave. Sit, girl." The dog grunted and she plopped herself back on the floor. Veronica looked at a grinning Logan with an annoyed look. It had been three years since they adopted Pony, and the dog only listened to him. Veronica curled her lips and changed the channel back to the previous channel. Pony watched the channel intently while Veronica sighed and she drank her coffee.
They could hear the sound of the ocean from outside their window, and the people started to come to the beach area. Both Logan and Veronica moved to this beach house about a year ago – they didn't want to stay at Dick's beach house, and the last apartment they lived in was too small for the three of them. Logan purchased the house a year ago, and it wasn't cheap. But he managed to get a good deal. At first, Veronica objected to the purchase, but after a lot of cajoling and persuasion, including a romantic picnic near a private beach and sex under the starry night, she finally accepted.
Veronica was eating her pancake happily while watching the nature channel. Logan was by her side, drinking coffee. She chewed her food and made a comment, "Did you take her for a walk?" Logan nodded. "You'd think she would be tired, but apparently she still wants to watch TV. Where did she get this habit?"
"My guess from Dick," Logan answered. "Remember last summer when we went to Catalina Island and Dick babysat her?" Veronica groaned. "He also fed her some hotdogs 'cause he thought that it was funny. You know; dog eat dog?"
"That man-baby is no longer allowed to be near our baby, and preferably near us." Veronica puffed her cheeks. Logan smiled and kissed her head. "Look at her." She pointed at Pony who was still watching TV. "She's gonna end up like him, and that would be horror."
"I don't think you need to worry about that anymore. Dick is now busy trying to break into Hollywood." He shuddered. "He asked me some pointers about being an actor, and I just… blergh." Logan shook his head. "I wanted to punch him in the nuts. Like, he kept asking about which trailer he should buy for his next movie."
"Dick is gonna be in a movie?"
"Yeah, Big Dick is gonna fund it." He curled his lips in disgust. "An action movie or some sort. A neo-noir action movie starring Josh Duhamel."
"Ugh."
"You know that he was just cast as a recurring in that show, 'Cupid Party and The Zombies'?" Veronica made a face and looked at him. "What?"
"What the hell? Cupid and…"
"'Cupid Party and The Zombies'. You know that show."
"No, I don't. I never heard of the show."
"It's a show that has been on the air for more than a decade. What do you mean you never heard of the show? It's a good show." Veronica raised her eyebrow. "No, I'm serious. It's good." Logan shrugged, "Well, in early years I suppose. Not in recent years." He curled his lips. "The writers wrote so many rape storylines, it seems the only thing they know how to write."
"You watched this show? How come I never heard about this show?"
"It was on UPN." Veronica opened her mouth in awe. "And it moved to CW."
Veronica snorted, "Oh. No wonder."
"So anyway, Dick just got cast and they are filming the show here in Neptune."
Veronica snorted and put her plate away. "Looking forward to making fun of him."
Logan just laughed, "Dick told me about it. He got this part of this cool surfer dude."
"Oh, my. Golden Globes here we come!"
"Apparently, he shacked up with James Franco's assistant who in turn introduced him to a casting agent in Los Angeles. Lo and behold, he got a recurring part." Logan rolled his eyes. Veronica remembered James Franco – he wasn't a pleasant man. "He made me a promise that I would check out his acting debut in a few months."
"They finished filming?"
"I think they're still filming."
Pony decided that she had enough of nature channel, so she stood up and stretched her body while yawned widely. She then trotted to her bed and made herself comfortable. "Oh, you finished watching squirrels, princess? Can I change the channel now?" Veronica said loudly to her dog. Pony looked away and laid down her head on the pillow. "I swear to god; her attitude is annoying. Dick really needs to take some responsibilities."
Before Logan could reply, there was a loud knock on the door. The knock was more of a banging and it startled Pony, she started to bark. "Pony! Hush! I wanna talk to Logan and Ronnie!" They could hear Dick's voice outside the door.
"Speaking of the devil…" Logan whispered. "Do you think we should just be quiet and maybe he would go away?" Veronica didn't answer but she turned the TV off.
"I can smell pancakes from here!" Dick yelled. "You're eating!"
Veronica looked at him. "He's such a detective." Logan sighed and went to open the door. Dick made a beeline towards Veronica.
"Ronnie, you gotta help me!" He hugged her, which made her squirm, and pushed him away with her foot. "I need your help."
"What is it this time? Do you want me to find out whether your bimbo of the week cheating on you? You still owe me the payment of the last case." Veronica pushed Dick's head to the side as she stood up. "I'm gonna take a shower. Logan, maybe you can feed him and then release him somewhere? We don't take strays."
"Ronnie, I need you to find my boss' killer and proof that I didn't kill him."
Logan and Veronica stopped in their tracks. "Say that again?" Logan was surprised.
"What did you do, DICK?" Veronica asked in disbelief.
"Haven't you watch the news? They say that I'm a person of interest!" Dick yelled. Pony whined and approached him. She burrowed her head at his hand, and he immediately hugged the dog. "It's okay, baby girl. I'm okay. It will be okay."
"Don't call her that." Veronica watched their interaction, offended at the notion that Pony liked this dumb blond. "And no, we haven't watched the news. Especially Entertainment News."
"Murders aren't entertainment, Ronnie."
Veronica wanted to hit Dick, but Logan held her hand and talked to Dick in an assertive manner. "Tell us what happened, Dick. Who got murdered and why you're the person of interest?"
Dick sighed and leaned back on the couch while petting Pony. "You know that I'm an actor, right?" Logan and Veronica rolled their eyes but he ignored them. "So my boss, who got killed, was the writer-showrunner of my show –"
"Cupid Party and The Zombies, yeah," Logan said.
Dick nodded, "Remember when we used to watch the show? I still remember when your dad got us the invitation to the show's party. Remember that? Paris Hilton was there. I tried to hook up with Nikki Hilton, but she brushed me off. You hooked up with –"
Logan cut him off mid-sentence, "Let's focus on the present. You were telling us about your boss?" Veronica glared at him but he pretended not to see her dagger stare.
"Robert Thomasina, the creator, he was like, awesome. He liked me because I'm the amazing actor he ever met. He wrote this character for me named Scooter after he saw my audition. I'm the new guy who came to town after the murder of the main character –"
"Whoa, who got killed in the show?" Logan interjected.
Dick pointed at Logan, "The lead character! You didn't know? It's Ven! The show killed off Ven!" He enthusiastically said to Logan.
Logan had his mouth opened, "They killed off Ven? Fan-favorite Ven? I mean, he was the best character in that show!"
"I know, right? It was insane. How come you didn't know about this? They killed him off last season. It's the reason why they cast me, so I can be the new guy and love interest."
Logan seemed aghast with the idea, "Hold on the fuck second. YOU are gonna be the main character and love interest? Your character, whose name is Scooter? Ven was supposed to be Loretta's soulmate!"
Veronica cleared her throat and said in an annoyed tone, "Are you done with the fangirling?"
Logan shook his head, "Veronica, you don't understand. Ven Martinelli was one of the greatest fictional characters of all time." He asked Dick, "Are you saying that the show killed him off after more than fifteen years?"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. And get this:" Dick paused for dramatic effect. "Robert was killed in the same way like Ven did." He opened his arms like he was presenting a surprising fact. Indeed, it surprised Logan as he just made a face like he was in disbelief.
Veronica gritted her teeth, "My god you two. What are you saying; your boss was killed in the same manner as one of his characters? How did he die, and why you are a suspect?"
Dick waved his hand, "I'm not a suspect per se. But apparently, because of the way Robert was murdered, the police and the ATF turned their attention to me because of my family history."
"The ATF? What are you saying…?"
"Someone put a bomb in my boss' car and blew him up." Dick curled his lips. "And the reason why they think that I'm a person of interest is that… well, Cass."
Both Logan and Veronica didn't say anything after Dick mentioned his late brother, Cassidy Casablancas. More than a decade ago, Cassidy Casablancas aka Beaver killed so many of their high school classmates and a plane full of people using explosives. Cassidy was also the one who raped Veronica all those years ago. The only people who knew about this were Logan and Veronica after they confronted Cassidy on the rooftop of The Grand Hotel.
It felt like a million years ago it happened.
Logan and Veronica already moved on from the tragedy and event that happened when they were still teenagers and just graduated from high school. It felt like a distant memory that almost made them forget it actually happened. The mere mention of his name seemed to make a tiny whiplash of memory for both of them. Logan and Veronica would never forget the way Cassidy looked at them on the edge of the rooftop and jumped into his death.
And now his name was mentioned again although it didn't have any connection with what happened with Dick's boss.
"Dick…" Logan said quietly to his best friend. "Did they say the reason why you're a person of interest is because of Cassidy?"
Dick exhaled loudly and hugged Pony tighter. "You really need to google this stuff and watch the news, man. Robert was killed with a car bomb, so naturally, they started to filter anyone who had a connection with crimes and what-not." He looked at both of them. "They found out that Big Dick is a former felon and my late little brother was a terrorist." He pointed at himself. "Naturally, I'm a person of interest."
Veronica narrowed her eyes at him. "But you didn't kill him, right?"
"Ronnie!"
Logan grimaced hearing her accusation tone. She never liked Dick, barely tolerated him. But she let her feelings aside because she loved Logan. "Veronica. I doubt that he blew up his boss and then ask you to find the culprit."
"Could be a ruse." Veronica coldly said. Cassidy's name was really damping the mood. "I'm gonna take a shower. I want him gone when I'm done." She didn't wait for his reply, just walked into the bedroom. Dick looked at her retreating to the back but didn't say anything.
Logan folded his arms and sighed. "Do you have a lawyer?"
Dick was scratching Pony's ears and quietly answered. "Yeah, I do."
"Cops already questioning you?"
"Not yet. I'm not a suspect like I mentioned. Just a person of interest." Dick huffed and stood up. "Your girlfriend sometimes can be a bitch."
"Careful now," Logan said. He needed to be the mature one in this, so he wasn't really upset with his outburst. He'd understand that Dick was afraid and angry about the whole situation especially they were dragging his family history. Veronica was still holding a grudge against what happened, and he couldn't blame her either.
Dick kissed Pony's head and headed out. "I need to clear my name, just in case. Should I go to Vinnie Van Lowe, instead?"
Logan shook his head. "Go to Mr. Mars. Maybe he can help you."
Dick raised his eyebrows, "You want me to go to the Mars Investigation and ask Papa Mars whether he can help me or not?"
"Mr. Mars is a good detective, you know that."
"He thinks I'm a moron."
"Dick, you are not... a moron. But I know you're innocent." Logan put his hand on Dick's shoulder. "When everyone accused me of killing Carrie, you were the only one who was on my side." Dick shrugged. "I don't think you have anything to do with anything, buddy."
Dick nodded and shoved his hands in his pockets. "Thanks, man."
"I'll talk to Veronica about this. I can't guarantee that she would take the case, but maybe Mr. Mars can help or at least recommend someone who can."
Both of them fist-bumped and Dick headed outside. Before he closed the door, he asked in a morose tone. "Surfing next week?"
"Yeah."
Dick nodded and left. Logan watched him from the window getting into his car. He then turned on the TV and watched the news. The TV anchors were talking about this sensational murder and even showed a few clips of the show. He pinched the bridge of his nose when they mentioned other sensational murders like Lilly Kane and Aaron Echolls' murders in Neptune and the most recent years, Carrie Bishop aka Bonnie DeVille's murder. "Fucking Neptune." He muttered. Logan expected that his name would be dragged and mentioned again. This was Neptune after all - there was no such thing as ancient history.
