(A/N And our favorite character finally makes an appearance!)
He landed at a run, stumbling a little, and then dashed into the Corellian freighter. He looked around the first corner with no luck, but as he passed a holo game table he caught sight of familiar brown robes.
Dropping his helmet and falling to his knees he held his arms out for his son.
"Dad!" Grogu called excitedly as he ran to Din's embrace.
Din didn't even try to hold back the tears of joy at seeing his son again and hearing the word from his mouth.
"Grogu," he said softly as he held his son and felt whole for the first time in weeks.
Grogu clung to him nearly as tightly as Din held on to him.
After a short while they heard voices approaching the ship. Grogu cooed at him and lifted his hands. Slowly his helmet rose from where it had fallen and floated shakily over to his head.
"Thanks, kid," he smiled at him, taking hold of the helmet. "You're quite a talented little womp rat."
Grogu blew raspberries at him and then giggled. Din laughed with him.
This felt right.
.
Teena stalled them at the ship's entrance. She didn't know why, but it felt wrong to continue in, even though Luke was trying to introduce her to Grogu. She supposed she felt that the united father and son deserved some privacy.
It was easy enough to just stand her ground and let Dev and 'Sara bombard the Jedi with questions. They stayed at her side and he stayed to humor them. A lot of their questions were based in fact checking the histories that Teena had shared with them throughout their childhoods. They remembered them much like she did, as fanciful bedtime stories. But as Luke answered more and more questions it became obvious that Ahsoka and her parents had not embellished their tales.
When Din stepped down the ramp he was carrying a tiny alien with huge ears and a big smile to match. The child cooed and giggled and generally acted like this was the happiest day of his life.
"Aww!" Na'sara approached and tickled his belly, babbling sweet nothings to him. Teena could practically see the pride rolling off Din.
"Kids," Luke knelt down to the children's eye level, "this is Grogu. He's going to be a bit of a classmate of yours. Do you want to say hi?"
The girl smiled and approached. She didn't say anything, but she wiggled her fingers above his face so he could try to catch them and he giggled further at her antics.
Even Nala seemed to relax somewhat.
The ten spent the morning in friendly company, sharing jokes and stories. It was a slice of peace in a galaxy of conflict.
Finally, around mid-day, Grogu seemed to deflate a little. Everyone noticed, but Din was the one to comment.
"It's time for you to go, isn't it?" Luke offered a small, rueful smile. Grogu cuddled into the Mandalorian's arms. "Will I see him again?" Din asked.
"I imagine so, though I can't say when. Well, if you keep finding force-sensitives I suppose it won't be long." Both chuckled at that.
Teena and her own kids said their farewells to the three children. They hadn't been able to build a strong bond, but she worried over their futures.
Luke held Grogu as the three made their way onto the ship. They'd been given a tour earlier and, from outside at least, it looked like they went directly to their temporary quarters. Luke hesitated on the ramp.
"Aren't you coming?" he asked.
She, and everyone else, looked at him in confusion.
"Teena," he clarified, "are you coming?"
"I- uh- I don't understand," she unconsciously took a step back.
"You're- You- You don't know?"
"What do you mean?"
Luke seemed to contemplate something and finally stepped forward to place a hand on her shoulder.
It was overwhelming.
It was like someone was crushing her very brain. She wanted nothing more than to veer back, away from the contact, but an additional contact was made. She looked down to see Grogu looking up at her with wide trusting eyes, his hand on hers. So she tried to relax.
It was no less overwhelming, but the pain subsided.
Her own past flashed to the forefront of her mind, specific points highlighted. Some long ago: telling Ahsoka all the things she could hear when they meditated and Ahsoka correcting some of her forms; some were recent: being drawn to the children when she had no idea they were in the facility with them. She saw these instances in a new light. Ahsoka was teaching her to hide the influence and disturbance she caused in the Force. She could feel the kids calling out in the Force.
But at the same time memories that were not her own flooded her mind.
Twin suns, knowing what was going to happen moments before it did, the harsh mechanical breath of Darth Vader, Ben Kenobi.
She gasped at the same time he did.
"You knew my grandfather?"
"You're Ben's?"
They blinked at each other and this time she reached for him.
She forcefully pushed all the stories she grew up with through her mind. Who she knew her grandfather to be. Obi-Wan Kenobi.
At the same time he regaled her with the ever-present old hermit that lived just over the dunes on Tatooine. He'd later learn it was for his own protection. A few days of training. Feeling him die and not knowing how to process death with a connection to the Force. Especially when he still hadn't had time to properly mourn his aunt and uncle.
She barely noticed the tears going down her face, but she could feel the support of her ade at her right elbow and left shoulder. Her grandfather had survived the purge of the Jedi, but he didn't even know Korkie was his, let alone that he had a granddaughter.
There were other inklings she took from Luke that didn't make sense to her. It was as if Luke could still see and hear him, even though he was dead.
Luke changed the line of questioning to an image of Ahsoka.
"You know Ahsoka Tano, too?" he asked aloud as he broke their connection.
She rubbed the tears from her eyes and nodded in answer.
"I need to find her. It seems everyone knows her but me."
"She should have told me," Teena whispered, her throat clogged and tight from emotion after the revelations.
"She was trying to protect you," he tried to defend the woman he didn't even know.
"Preparing me would have been better than hiding me," she sighed.
"Teena?" Na'sara asked on her left.
"I'm okay," she smiled at her ad. [daughter/son]
"Are you sure?" Dev spoke up at her other side.
"Yeah, just...overwhelmed."
Luke offered her his hand and motioned his head towards the ramp.
She didn't step back this time, instead giving him a rueful smile.
"I can't go. I- I can't. I've lived my life so far and have my own responsibilities. I'd like to be able to keep in touch though, in case I have questions."
He chewed on his thoughts for a moment.
"If you meditate we will find you. I can't… I can't risk my wards' safety."
She nodded slowly, offering a small thanks and a gentle wave at Grogu as they ascended the ramp and the door to the Millenium Falcon closed behind them.
She could still feel her heartbeat in her ears when they finally boarded her freighter. She gave 'Sara leave to act as pilot and noticed Din falling into the copilot's seat.
She went to her quarters to rest.
