...15 years before the events of HTTYD 1...

(A/N: Sons and Daughters of Berk- William Maytook. 1-1:35)

Far away, just outside of the Barbaric Archipelago's North border lies a small island with a single prominent peak. And on top of this peak sits a single nest made of large rocks. And in this nest lie 4 eggs as black as the night sky. They sit there, quietly, like they have done for last 3 months. But tonight something is different.

Tonight is the night when four new dragons shall enter this world and, God willing, will live long and prosperous lives. Their mother sits just out side the nest, watching, and thinking about how blessed she is to have not one, not two, but four beautiful eggs.

"Is it time?" The father asks as he flys in and lands next to his mate.

"Yes". She says without taking her eyes off the nest.

Just as she says so, a small cracking noise comes for the nest.

"Look!" The mother says with excitement and one of the eggs shake.

Both parents look on hopefully, ready to receive their new offspring.

Suddenly, the other eggs begin to shake and crack as well as the baby dragons push and shove to rid themselves of their newly discovered prison. Just then the first egg shatters in an explosion of purple fire and smoke, leaving behind a small baby dragon as black as the depths of the ocean and with eyes as green as emeralds.

"Welcome to the world young one," The mother said affectionately.

Both dragons sat there and looked in awe as the eggs began hatching. One by one all four eggs broke apart leaving behind four, perfect little dragons. In just one night four new dragons had entered the world. And though they didn't know it yet, they were now living in a world where the Night Fury was slowly disappearing. And all of them, especially the youngest, had a part to play in fight for the survival of their species.

Four years later...

(Midnight' POV)

Midnight slowly crept through the shadows of the thick brush around him, noiselessly stalking the deer that was in a clearing just a few hundred yards in front of him. He and his fellow siblings were sent out together with the task of bringing home a deer for the family's supper. The oldest, a female named Starlight, was leading the hunt like she always did. As the oldest of the four, she was always the one leading them in their drills and hunts and would regularly be the one who brought down the deer or sheep, or what ever they were hunting. But today was different, today she had surprised him by saying that he was to be the one who brought down the deer and the others would be there as support.

"I can do this." He said to himself as he tried to calm his racing heart. This was the first time he had been given an important role and he was nervous about messing it up.

"I just need to focus, to breath, just like mother said."

He slowly inched forward until he was in the perfect position with the deer's rump directly in front of him. He slowly glanced up at his older sister, who glanced back and nodded slowly.

"Ok, let's do this" He said.

(A/N: Astrid Finds Toothless-John Powell 1-1:23)

He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and leaped out of the bushes with a furious roar of a hunter.

"Rrrrrreeeeaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!" He shot towards the deer at lightning speed and tackled to the ground with a crash. With a practiced swipe, he broke the deer's neck, killing it instantly.

Midnight stood there, panting, and staring at the deer with pride. He had done it.

A few moments later his brother and older sister jump out of their hiding places.

"Well done Midnight!" Starlight praised as she landed in front of him. "Ya!" His brother Flash said, " I couldn't have done it better myself."

Midnight beamed, this was a big accomplishment. Now he could hunt and provide food for him self and his family. His other sister flew down from her tree and started circling the deer.

"This is a beautiful deer" She replied. "It's a shame we had to kill it."

"But without killing it we wouldn't have anything to eat tonight and I don't know about you but fish does NOT sound appetizing." Flash replied chuckle.

"I don't mind fish." Replied Nightfall. "But you are right, deer is better."

Starlight walked up alongside Midnight and gave him an affectionate nudge.

"Well this one did a fantastic job." She said. "Come on, let's bring the deer back to mom and dad."

After a couple of tries, Midnight was able to successfully lift the deer up while keeping himself balanced in the air. He was not as muscular as his brother and oldest sister so he always had trouble when it came to lifting or carrying something.

Built like his mother, he was light, slim and fast. Very fast. Even at a young age he was much faster than his siblings. He would always win every race that involved flying and he was proud of it.

His brother was like his dad. Big, strong and a powerful warrior. At a young age their father had told him to never show your enemy any signs of weakness and to fight with the ferocity of the warrior his species was know for. But sometimes he would start fights that he couldn't win and would have to call in his brother and sisters to help.

Midnight chuckled at the memory of the time Flash has picked a fight with a Monstrous Nightmare that was teasing him pabout how weak his family was for carrying so much about each other. The fight ended with Flash shooting a distress call into the sky and calling his siblings to help him.

His oldest sister was their leader, she was smart, brave, kind, and a was always caring for her brothers and sister. She was build like her mother but had some of her father in her as well. Like Midnight, her eyes were as green as emeralds. Something they both inherited from their father.

Then there was Nightfall. She was a very quiet dragon and never said something without meaning to say it. But when she did talk, it was always with a calm and kind voice. She had dark purple eyes like her mother, and a willing heart like her father. But in a pinch, she was the fiercest fighter than any of them.

Yes, Midnight was proud to call these dragons his siblings. But he was especially proud of his parents. His mother's name was Eclipse, she was a beautiful dragon with scales that always gleamed like onyx stone and a kind smile that always showed her pride for her children. His father was a massive dragon named Shadow. Built like a mountain, he was as strong as some of the biggest dragons on the island and he was always the one who ran their hunting and fighting drills.

Midnight flew over the island to a small, secluded lake at the base of the mountain where his parents had kept his egg all those years ago. Once he and his siblings were old enough, they moved down here where they were closer to the dragon colony that lived on the island. Surrounded by night cliffs and deep in a thick forest, the lake was the perfect place to live if your are a member of a species who is beginning to slowly disappear. The thick forests were able to deter hunters but allowed for perfect cover. Then, if someone happened to make it through the forest there was the 100 ft high shear walls that surrounded the lake.

Midnight slowly landed on the bank of the lake and dropped his deer on the ground.

"Back already?" Said his mom's voice from behind him. "You all haven't been gone for but an hour."

"We got lucky" Said Starlight as she and the others landed on the bank to join their brother and mother. "We were able to find a deer quickly and it didn't take long to get into position."

Their mother turned to Midnight. "And were you the one who harvested this beautiful animal?"

"Yes mother." He replied in a respective tone.

"Well done son." She replied in her proud, soft voice that she always used to congratulate her children. " you are growing older and stronger every day. Your father and I are very proud of you all."

"Speaking of father." Said Flash. "Where is he? I hope he come soon, Im so hungry that I could eat that whole deer myself."

Their mother chuckled. "He is visiting with his friend Crest. He should be back shortly."

"I hope so." Said Flash as he hungrily eyed the deer. Midnight saw his brother look and growled at his softly.

One hour later...

(A/N: The Cove-John Powell.)

(Nightfall's POV)

As the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, Father, Midnight, and myself sat around the deer while Father showed us how to properly clean the deer so it can be eaten.

"How is was your time with Crest?" I asked.

" It was good." Father replied. "I always enjoy seeing my old friend.

"Did he have any more information on the disappearances?" Asked Midnight.

"Some." Replied Shadow. "But nothing we haven't heard before."

Crest was a female Deadly Nadder who had been one of Shadow's childhood friends. When they got older Crest moved to a small island farther south to start a family of her own. Occasionally one of them would go visit the other and check up on each other. Crest was the first to hear the rumors of Night Furys suddenly going missing.

Crest frequently came to our island so we (being my brothers and sister) were very familiar with her. She was very kind and gentle and loved to play with us.

"I hope she continues to stay out of trouble." Said Nightfall with a nervous voice. "I know she would come to any dragon's aid no mater the consequences."

"Yes." Said Shadow with a sight. "And she would almost certainly get killed if it is truly humans who have been killing us."

"Humans." Thought Nightfall. "How could such small and useless beingsbe responsible for the killing so many Night Furys?"

"You would think that humans would be to weak to kill dragons like us." Replied my brother.

"Exactly what I was thinking." I said.

"Humans appear to be very smart and resourceful." Said father. "They have built many things what can hurt a dragon before it has a chance to attack. I have personally seen what a small amount of these "weak beings" can do to a entire flock of dragons. Make no mistake, humans are no where as weak or harmless as they seem."

"Yes father." My brother and I reply in unison.

Far away from the peaceful island, on another island in the middle of an archipelago, a absolutely massive dragon with 6 eyes on it's green head slowly pulled itself out of the sea into the remains of a dead volcano.

"This will do nicely." It thought to itself. "Now all I need are dragons who are all to willing to help me wage my war on these pesky little humans."
