Chapter Four

A Culprit Named

Lucius and Narcissa stepped through the fire and into the office first, quickly followed by their two children. Ragnok rose from his chair in greeting once their whole party had arrived, a grim look gracing the goblin Chieftain's face as he offered them a brisk nod.

"Lord and Lady Malfoy, Scion Malfoy, Miss Granger," he greeted them each in turn. "I wish that you were here for a more simple business than this."

Lucius offered a modest bow to Ragnok, showing his respect to a goblin who could easily empty his vault and make any and all financial aspirations disappear should he ever not toe the line. He may be Wizarding Aristocracy but he was far from stupid. Arrogance here would only gain him powerful and vengeful enemies.

"Chieftain Ragnok, thank you for clearing your schedule for us. If I may, I would like the inheritance test to include a paternity test as well. I want there to be no question as to who Miss Granger truly is."

Nodding at his request, Ragnok said, "The Deputy Headmistress is a loyal friend to your daughter. We would all like the confirmation of who would dare cross Lady Magic with such a heinous act as the kidnapping of a magical child." Ragnok's grim face turned feral as he continued, "Any patron of this bank who would commit such a crime would be subject to not only Ministry action but the legal ramifications thrown at them from the Goblin Hoard."

He looked terribly gleeful at the prospect, his sharp teeth showcasing a predatory smile.

Lucius silently chuckled at the bloodthirsty goblin, keeping his tone neutral as he responded, "Well, shall we see who has incurred the wrath of your mighty clan then?"

Ragnok led them across the hall from his office, knowing from his previous dealings with Lord Malfoy that nothing but the best service would be desired. If Miss Granger truly was the lost Malfoy daughter, Ragnok could not risk anyone but his most trusted knowing what was occurring that afternoon and would oversee the entire process himself to ensure not a single detail was missed. As they walked into the marble boardroom, Ragnok gestured to the closest chairs that lined the front of the ebony table as he moved to the opposite side to sit across from Hermione.

He produced a silver dagger that gleamed under the yellow candlelight and a four foot roll of parchment. Hermione's face stayed impassive as she waited for instructions on her part to play, having never entered Gringotts before for anything more than a currency exchange before purchasing school supplies.

"Miss Granger, in order to complete a full inheritance test, as well as the paternity test that Lord Malfoy has requested, you will need to prick your finger and allow seven drops of blood to fall in the center of the parchment. After your blood is added, Lord and Lady Malfoy will then each add seven drops of their own blood. If both are your parents as your school assignment suggests, the three pools of blood will merge together and write out your magical inheritance, as well as a complete history of any magical alterations that you have incurred not by your own doing, along with any magically binding contracts that are currently in your name," Ragnok explained.

Hermione cocked her head to the side, processing his words before asking, "Why not just test my blood against Draco's? Since we're twins with the same set of parents wouldn't it write up everything for both of us, thereby using less blood and proving my paternity?"

There was silence for a second before Ragnok laughed, shocking the other three Malfoys in the room who had never seen such genuine, spontaneous emotion coming from a goblin.

"Ah Miss Granger, you truly are the Brightest Witch Hogwarts has seen in many generations. Such simple logic would astound the majority of the Wizarding population. I look forward to following your career with much interest."

Hermione preened under the goblin's praise as she offered up a more familial address, "Please call me Hermione, or Adhara once this whole thing has been sorted out. I'm sure you and I will be overseeing a number of matters together for many years to come."

"Well then Hermione," he said with eager emphasis on her given name, "to answer your question, using your and Draco's blood would produce the same result. However since his paternity isn't in question and his magical inheritance is already known, that method would produce unnecessary information. Furthermore comparing you two as siblings will not dive deep enough to encounter any possible enchantments you may unknowingly be under."

Hermione nodded her acceptance of his answer before picking up the dagger to prick her finger on its fine point. She used her other hand to gently squeeze out the required seven drops before silently closing off the tiny wound with her wand. She calmly passed the dagger to Narcissa, who mimicked her movements before passing the dagger to Lucius. When the seventh drop of Lucius's blood hit the parchment, all twenty-one drops raced to converge together, scrawling out Hermione's history in elegant script. Lucius could only stare at the girl sitting between him and his wife, finally allowing himself to believe that his daughter was finally home, tears welling up in his eyes for the first time since he had lost her.

She stared back at him, a shy hopeful smile gracing her face as she whispered, "Hi Papa."

The dam broke and ten years of suppressed sorrow flowed forth, streaming down his face as he reached over to grab his little girl and bring her onto his lap. He cried for the years he had lost with her, the milestones he had never gotten to witness, and for the sheer elation he felt at finally being whole again. Hermione clung to her Papa and cried for the hard man her father had become in her absence. The man he'd been forced to be by a father whose only loves in life had been power, wealth, and status.

Draco quietly watched his normally emotionless father, gently grasping his mother's hand when he noticed that she too was crying.

"We're finally going to be a family again Mama," he whispered to her as she squeezed his hand in gratitude, only able to nod at her son's words.

As the tears calmed, Hermione gently let go of her father and slid off his lap to go back to her own chair. They had a roll of parchment to read that would be able to start giving her family and herself at least some of the answers and closure that they had all been looking for in one way or another.

Lucius's silver eyes had turned to dark grey storm clouds by the time he finished reading, their depths promising retribution for Dumbledore's misdeeds against his family. Narcissa's had sparked alive with a cold fury at what had been done to her daughter. Draco was focused on the Twin Speak, wondering how he had become so numb as to not feel the block when around her. His mind quickly shifted to planning retribution on the Weasel though upon seeing the Love Potion that had been keyed to him and regularly administered to his sister. The idea that someone would use such a vile method of coercion just to get a girl to like them made him vibrate with rage. He hadn't been there to protect her before, but that ended now.

Hermione felt waves of emotion crash over her. She was in shock at having had access to only fifty percent of her core, quiet thoughts placing her of what she would truly be capable of now in the back of her mind. There was a soul deep ache at knowing she had been so fully cut off from her brother but it was mixed with a fierce pride at having partially broken blocks placed by one of the most powerful wizards of their time with nearly no conscious effort on her part. The love she felt for Ron, or thought she felt, turned to bitter ash and loathing for his manipulation of her heart and the lengths he and his mother had gone through, even securing a second betrothal contract without her knowledge. With an un-muddled mind she could see the absurdity of her crush on him and knew she would rather be crucioed everyday of her life than be trapped in an unbreakable marriage to Ronald Weasley.

On the same thread of betrothal contracts, she was indigent about having been promised to Theodore Nott at the age of four. Not much was currently in her control and it left her feeling weak and angry with a festering ball of loathing towards Dumbledore but this was. When their meeting was over she would be sure to tell her parents exactly how she felt about them taking her life choices away when she was barely more than a toddler.

Hermione's magic physically manifested as she tried to keep her composure, her hair crackling around them as sparks of raw power raced through her frizzy tendrils. Lucius and Narcissa watched in awe, the power she was exhibiting with only the smallest access to her magical core no small feat. A core binding of fifty percent would have rendered most near squibs if not killed them slowly and painfully over an extended amount of time, and yet here she was not only keeping her power in check but sitting at the top of her class at school. She was magnificent.

Working on instinct, Draco stood up and slowly approached his sister. He reached out for her and gently ran the palm of his hand down her hair, smoothing the magic back into submission. He continued the caring action several times over till he saw her visibly relax and felt static of her core recede.

"Ragnok," Hermione addressed, her hand coming to rest over Draco's, "Please call the healer you trust most and for Bill Weasley. He's the best you have and despite his familial connection, I know he will find his mother and brother's motives just as abhorrent and can be trusted. I would like to be in full control of my own facilities sooner rather than later."

Ragnok nodded his agreement and immediately summoned for their head healer, a female goblin named Demelza. When she arrived she took one look at Adhara's Inheritance parchment and paled. To her credit she quickly composed herself before saying, "Miss Malfoy, if you and your family would please follow me down the hall, we shall get this taken care of immediately."

Draco took Ada's arm and guided her out of the room, Lucius and Narcissa following behind them with Ragnok taking up the rear. Passing a side office, he poked his head in to speak to its occupant.

"Curse Breaker Weasley?"

Bill Weasley looked up from the correspondence on his desk, pushing the stray red hairs that had escaped his ponytail back from his face.

"Yes Chieftain Ragnok, what can I do for you?"

"We have a young lady headed to Ritual Room One, with extensive magical blocks, potions of various kinds, and compulsions manipulating her system, many of which have had the time to code themselves into her magic having been put there to fester for the last ten years. I need you to be on standby in case the blocks resist the cleansing and we need to contain her magic. Given the highly sensitive nature of this case, your discretion is paramount. I was going to assign someone else for reasons that will become clear momentarily but she requested you by name."

Bill had always loved a good mystery, it was what led him into this field of study, so despite the semi-ominous tone of Ragnok he stood immediately, a course of excitement running through him at being brought in personally by the client.

"Lead on Chief."

The two entered the ritual room just as Hermione walked back in wearing only the thin ritual robe Demelza had provided for her. Bill looked left towards the family area and his eyes widened upon seeing the Malfoys before snapping back to realize he knew the girl he would be helping to save.

"Hermione? Merlin! You… your…What I mean to say is..." he sputtered.

Hermione's face lit up at seeing one of her favorite Weasleys, normally so cool and flirtatious at a loss for words.

"Thank you for bringing him in, Ragnok.

"Hi Bill, how have you been? Everything you're feeling now, that's been me for the last several hours," she said with a small laugh. "Surprise, I'm apparently the lost Malfoy Heiress. I didn't even know they had lost a child but here I am.

"However, do you mind if we get everything cleansed before we talk? It's a bit of a long story."

Demelza directed Hermione to lie on the crystal slab in the center of the ritual circles that were made up of various runes burned into the marble floors. She moved her limbs this way and that till she was in the proper position, connected in some way to each circle and the runes that powered it. She then came to stand at her head, with a second goblin healer at her feet. In the outer circle stood two more, one on each side of her, while Bill stood like a sentry behind the one at her feet, his wand at the ready should there be a need to fight off the toxic magics within her.

Demelza handed Hermione an anesthetic potion, motioning for her to drink it quickly. As she consumed the vial, Bill slipped into work mode and waved his wand to conjure a diagnostic charm above Hermione. A shimmering gold light erupted from the tip and spread out shaping and weaving itself to mimic her magical core. Each thread shone into a blinding white before becoming a series of vibrantly coloured chains. Directly above her heart was a core of Smokey pink, the evidence of the love potion she had been given in small controlled doses since her stay at Grimmauld Place over the summer. Around her head was a chain of acidic green, that was slowly turning white as her mind worked even now to tear apart the blocks in her memory.

Bill held a parchment copy of the read out in his hands, the block letters forming rapidly as they scrawled across the page in haste to keep up with the magical read out. She had been through hell and didn't even know it. A full decade of manipulation and alteration done to her magic, to her very DNA, and no one had been the wiser all these years.

Bill had to restrain himself from crumpling her results in hand as he read and reread the results, seeing what his own mother had done to Hermione.

With a steadying breath for his anger, he spoke with an air of professionalism, "I suggest we start with the most recently administered modifications and work our way backwards. The longer anything has been in your system the more of a fight it will put up to stay and the more taxing it will be on your magic to remove and that of those healing you. So, an Amortentia cleanse first, followed by cleansing the Distrust compulsion since your nature is inherently trustful your body will aid us in removing it, then we can tackle the Loyalty compulsion."

Demelza nodded and lifted a staff of goblin wrought silver that was topped by a flawlessly cut diamond, beginning a hypnotic chant in Gobbledygook. The runes on the floor began to glow and pulse in beat with the silver staff. Her chant grew in tempo and volume, the magic flowing from her conduit out into the room. It circled the smoky pink of her corrupted love before engulfing it in fire. The smell of summer suffocated the pure air, choking them for several seconds before sparks rained down washing away the Amortentia from Hermione.

Now for the memory block, Bill thought, turning his wand to the chains that wrapped inside her head. More of Demelza's magic rolled out, guided by Bill's deft hand to heat and melt each chain. It was far easier and less strenuous with her mind already shattering most of the work upon her finally recognizing Draco for who was to her and his part of accepting her without question into his heart.

Bill then redirected the magic to the four red chains surrounding her core. The block on her Healing Affinity unsurprisingly broke immediately, her own magic reaching out to aid in healing itself after so many years of abuse. The Wandless and Non-Verbal blocks were quick to follow with Bill adding a small boost of his own magic as the malevolence of the curse tried to resist the healers. Finally the blood red Animagus Block, taking the strongest of the second wave from Demelza and a large push from Bill before finally melting away.

As Adhara's magic was slowly unbound, she twitched and groaned, her body trying to acclimate to the power coming into her system. A final surge of magic was released from the staff and Bill focused on the final three chains. The two violet chains glowed brightly as they resisted the goblins' combined magics, having been wrapped around her core for so long the two had become one entity. Bill dove deeper into his own power, supercharging the spell that was already at work while the other two goblin healers began chanting in time with Demelza. With a deafening crack, the blocks keeping Adhara from her twin brother collapsed and she cried out, her magic rushing out to find her brother and soothe each other. When it was unable to connect with him Hermione screamed out, pain ripping through her chest as she felt the full impact of what it would be like to lose a twin, cut off from the other half of her magic and her soul.

The final chain, black as night, squeezed around Adhara's core, tightening until her screams turned hoarse. Albus had conspired to keep her full potential locked away, and the malice contained in this block was as dark as many of the curses Bill had seen in Egypt's Pharoh's tombs. Ragnok and Bill joined their voices with the healers, each pouring as much magic as they were able into freeing the girl's magic from its final prison. As the chains on her core broke, Hermione's body thrashed about, the full force of her magic flooding her system and overwhelming her. Bill cast the strongest containment charm he knew around her to protect her family, the goblins, and himself, praying to Lady Magic that she spare them all from the explosion that was erupting from within Hermione.

As quickly as her body had been possessed, Hermione stopped all movement, falling into deep even breaths as though she was merely sleeping upon the table.

When Hermione opened her eyes, Bill slowly began to lower the shields around her, cautious about releasing her before finding out if her magic had fully stabilized. Behind him, Draco was trembling, having never witnessed a ritual of such power outside the major holidays such as Yule and Beltane. Narcissa's sobs could be faintly heard around the room as she muffled herself in her husband's chest while murder shone clear through his eyes as he began to plot the down fall of Dumbledore.
