Author's Note: I apologize for not updating this fic in a while, I've just not had much motivation for it and life got in the way a bit. I want to finish it so much though, so I sat down and wrote this and I really hope you like it!
Louisa
"Your vati tried so, so hard to make it home in time to meet you…" Agathe sighed as she used the tip of her finger to trace light circles onto the back of her daughter's palm, the newborn blinking up at her from where she was nestled in her arms while swaddled in a blanket. "He'll not be pleased that he couldn't be here for this, but things don't always go the way we want them to and we just have to deal with what's in front of us. If I know your vati though, he'll be catching the first train home because he's been so desperate to meet you and he won't wait a moment longer than necessary to hold you in his arms. You're going to love him so much. He can be a bit of a grump sometimes, especially when he's tired, but he's the most wonderful father to your brother and sister and I don't doubt for a moment that he'll be the same to you."
Her hold of her daughter tightened when she shifted into a more comfortable position in her arms, the love she had for her deepening when she arched her back and let out the mightiest yawn. It didn't surprise her in the slightest that she was so exhausted. Her birth hadn't been as traumatic as Friedrich's, not in the slightest, but it had been long and hard and she'd managed to get her shoulders stuck at one point which had led to the doctor having to intervene. It was all over now though and the two of them were finally able to get some rest. She just wished that she had her husband home. After having him present for both Liesl and Friedrich's births, having him there to hold her in his arms and praise her over and over again, it felt somewhat foreign to have done it all without him and she had to admit that she'd hated every moment.
Before her thoughts could have the chance to consume her completely, the rattle of the doorknob caught her attention and she couldn't help but smile when the door creaked open and she turned her head to watch Liesl peer around it. She should have been asleep for hours, but she knew her little girl like the back of her hand and she knew that she could never sleep when something was happening. It was truly as though she had a sixth sense for this kind of thing. Despite knowing that her husband would have taken her back to bed should he have been home, she decided that there wouldn't be much harm in letting her stay for a little while. "Come on. Come and have a cuddle with mutti, my love." She patted the vacant space on the bed, chuckling when Liesl gasped and entered the room before closing the door and hurrying towards her.
She waited for her little girl to climb onto the bed, using the quilt to hoist herself up, and crawl towards her before slipping an arm out from beneath her baby and putting it around her shoulders with a kiss to the side of her head. "Vati still isn't home and mutti is feeling lonely, so you can keep me company," She whispered when she pulled back and looked into her eyes, Liesl nodding her response before curling a hand into the front of her nightgown and beaming as she cuddled closer to her so that she could see the baby falling asleep against her chest. "You have a baby sister, how marvellous is that? She won't be able to do all that much for a while because she's very little, like Friedrich was when we brought him home from the hospital, but she'll be able to play dollhouse with you when she's a bit older and you can dress up together!"
Liesl looked up at her in silence for a time at her words before turning to her little sister again and reaching out a hand to stroke her face, a smile crossing her lips when her eyes opened at her touch. "Hi, baby…" She said quietly, her gaze falling to the baby's hand before she took it in her own and swept her thumb across her fingers. They had to have been the tiniest fingers she had ever seen! "Look, mutti, small fingers!"
"She does have small fingers, doesn't she?" Agathe gave her a squeeze. "You can give her a kiss before she goes to sleep if you want to."
"I want to!" Liesl exclaimed softly.
Shaking her head in response, laughing at her daughter's eagerness, Agathe leaned forward a little and turned in place so that Liesl could kiss her on the forehead. "Gentle, sweet-pea, that's it," She told her with pride in her eyes, her fingers brushing against the curls that hung down her back as she watched her pull back from her sister before she settled down in her arms again and she rested her forehead against her own. "Why doesn't mutti put the baby to bed? Then we can lie down and have a cuddle together, can't we? I'm certain vati and aunt Hede won't mind you spending the night with me since he won't be home tonight and she's already in bed." She pulled her closer, looking into her eyes.
"Okay." Liesl agreed before allowing her to take her arm from around her shoulders.
Once she had laid her little girl down in the Moses basket beside the bed, it took her seconds to get her settled and ease her pacifier into her mouth. "Goodnight, little one," She hummed, leaning down to brush her lips against her hairline before drawing back and shuffling closer to Liesl again. Lifting the quilt slightly, she watched her climb beneath it before the two of them laid down together and she wrapped her in her arms. "You know, vati and I still don't have a name for her at the moment. We've thought of a couple over the past couple of months, but I don't think any of them really suit her now that she's here. You're quite good at coming up with names for your dollies, so perhaps you can help us. What do you think we should name her?" She inquired, letting her hand run warmly up and down her back through her nightgown.
"Hmm…" Liesl tapped her chin as she hummed in thought, causing her to smile. "Louisa is nice! Like the dolly vati bought for me!"
Whatever she had expected her little girl to come out with, it definitely hadn't been that.
She had expected her to come out with something a little more childish if she was honest, but Louisa was a beautiful name.
A beautiful name that, if she thought about her and what her little personality was like at the moment, suited her absolutely perfectly.
"I think Louisa is a wonderful name!" She took an arm from around her to stroke her cheek. "I'll have to speak with vati, but I love it."
"You do?" Liesl asked, pure happiness in her eyes.
"I do," She nodded. "I love it so much. Just as much as I love you…"
