Wes followed his gaze and beheld a shimmery curtain of glitter. He and Danny tiptoed toward it.
Stars and specks of light shifted and flitted here and back. Some bumped into one another, and where they collided, a shower of blue sparks rained down. Wes stared up in fascination. In front of him, Danny tentatively stuck his finger out toward it.
It acted like any dust would, in that the motion of his hand generated enough wind, minuscule amounts as it was, that it blew the glittery substance into a new cloud.
Satisfied that it was harmless, Danny stepped forward into the storm. He looked up. His hands extended to his sides like a T. Spinning around in the shimmer, he looked like a child playing in his first snowfall.
"It's okay, Wes. It won't hurt you!"
Wes stepped forward. He saw a ring of mushrooms, red with white spots, encircled the glitter. He'd heard these were called "fairy circles". He wondered vaguely if the circle was related to the glitter before he was inside the blizzard of rainbow dust.
He sighed in relief, smiling. He felt weightless. His feet weren't touching the ground. He was floating inches above it.
