Chapter One

'This is for your own good.'

'This place has the tools to help you in ways that we can't.'

Trent has long learned to tune out anything of the sort. There were plenty of things that he'd been forced to endure 'for his own good'. And this school was bound to just be another failed attempt to 'help' him. Any attempt to fix whatever condition he may or may not have, never worked in the past. Why would it work now? Still without a diagnosis, so there was little that could be done to help him. So he counts the days until he would be shipped off to school, unable to miss how secretive his foster parents were acting when talking about it. While The Scotts were one of the nicest couples he'd been to stay with in a while, Trent knew that wasn't going to last long. He wasn't even mildly surprised when they announced they were enrolling him in a boarding school less than two months into his stay.

But then the time comes for him to leave, a black van pulling up outside the home. His foster parents walk outside, while he stands in the doorway. A man dressed in black gets out of the car. The man says something to his foster father that Trent can't hear, before looking over Mr. Scott's shoulder at him. Then he turns around, speaking to his passenger. A girl around his age gets out of the car, looking around her surroundings. Almost as if she'd never seen anything like it before. The man says something under his breath, that sounds like 'Kira'. The girl stops looking around, looking straight ahead at him.

"Are you ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be." He mumbles, walking over to the van. The three of them get inside the van, driving off. The home disappears into the trees the further they drive. He looks out the window, suddenly much drowsier than before. He shakes his head, attempting to shake the sleep off. He leans his head against the window, his eyes shutting for what feels like one second. But when he opens them again, it's nighttime. He tries to stretch, finding that he was still tired.

The van comes to a stop in a field of grass. The girl gets out of the van, stepping in front of the van. Through the windshield, he sees her put her arms up above her head. Waving them in seemingly random directions, until a portal opens up before them. The girl gets back in the van, which drives through the portal. The van begins to shake violently, but the two up front seem completely unfazed. And surprisingly, his eyes shut once again. This time, he wakes up in a completely different location.

He's in what looks like a principal's office, lying on a couch. He sits up, just as the door opens. The same man from the previous night entered the room. "What happened last night?"

"You fell asleep on the drive here. I thought it best to put you in my office until we could get you a room." The man walks over to the desk, taking a seat in his chair. "You are more special than you know, Trent."

He scoffs. "Yeah. That's why I got sent here, isn't it?"

"That's not what I meant. It'll all make sense in time."

Trent narrows his eyes in confusion, opening his mouth to ask him what he meant. But then the door opens once again. This time the girl from last night enters the office. "Kira's going to take you to your room."

She smiles at him, beckoning him to follow her. He stands up, following her out into the hallway. They walk down a flight of stairs that seems to go on forever. "Isn't there an elevator?"

"There is. But… it doesn't work. And take my word for it, you'll get used to the stairs." They finally reach the bottom, and she leads him into another hallway. Which leads to what almost looks like an entirely different building. The paint on the walls was yellow here, when it was red in the other building. "This is your dormitory. And this is your room."

She walks over to one of the doors, opening it. "This is my room?"

It was bigger than most of the apartments he'd stayed in over the years. "Yeah. Well, yours and your roommate's."

"Roommate?"

"Yes, your roommate." Another voice says from inside the room. A boy, not much older than him, comes into view. "And you must be my new roommate."

"I'll be leaving you alone now." Kira turns around, walking off the way they came.

"Trent, right?"

"Yeah. How did you know that?"

"The headmaster told me. My name's Conner. Are you hungry? I'll show you the cafeteria."

Before he can respond, Conner's dragging him off in the direction of the cafeteria.

Upon arriving in the cafeteria, he notices that there aren't many other students there. (And the cafeteria itself looks more like a buffet restaurant, than a school cafeteria.) Other than them, there's only a handful of other students there. And exactly three administrators. "Why are there so few kids?"

"Because classes don't actually start at Hawkins for another week. Most of the kids here now live on campus full time."

"Including you?"

"Yes. Including me."

"What does that mean for me?"

Conner stops in his tracks. "How much did the Headmaster tell you?"

"Not much. We barely even talked before Kira showed up."

Conner sighs. "Did he tell you why you were sent here?"

"No. Only that I was 'more special than I know'. And I thought I was sent here because I was 'special'. The school is called Hawkins Academy for the Gifted."

"Uh well. There's a certain word left out. The school is actually called Hawkins Academy for the Supernaturally Gifted." Conner grabs himself a tray, piling food onto his tray. Trent does the same.

"Supernaturally gifted? Are you joking?"

"Let me ask you this: have you had problems with aggression, authority, impulse control?"

"Yeah. How did you know that?"

"Because I am like you, Trent. You are special Trent. But not in the way you think."

"What are you talking about?"

Conner closes his eyes, sucking in a deep breath. When he reopens his eyes, they're not that of a human's, but of a wolf. "I'm a werewolf, Trent. And so are you."

"A werewolf? I must be dreaming."

Conner blinks, his eyes returning to normal. "You're not dreaming. This is very much real."

"You must be mistaken. I'm not a werewolf."

"We're not mistaken. I can smell it on you. Each different supernatural being has their own unique smell. They can sniff each other. A normal human can't pick it up, but those of us here can. And you have the scent of a werewolf." Conner grabs his tray, carrying it over to a table. "And your foster parents are supernatural beings as well. A witch and a warlock to be specific. Apparently the headmaster's an old friend, so when they picked up your scent, they informed the headmaster. They waited a few weeks just to make sure you didn't somehow get the scent on your clothes. And when they were sure, the headmaster and Kira came to pick you up."

"And what are they?"

"Kira's a witch. The headmaster is a vampire hunter. Retired. I think," he makes a face, "he did just shoot a goblin square in the chest last week."

"Anyways," Conner shakes his head," the headmaster usually takes his wife on recruiting trips, but she's pregnant. And a witch is required to open the portal, and Kira's been itching to get out of-"

"Portal?"

"Right. Can't believe I forgot that. The academy is surrounded by woods that hide it from onlookers. There's a portal that gives easy access to the school, but only a witch can open it."

"It wasn't a dream." Trent says aloud, before he can stop himself.

"What?"

"Nothing."
