Chapter Three
"What the hell happened last night?" Conner groans from his bed, and Trent couldn't hold back his laughter.
"You almost got in a fight with a vampire, was poisoned, and now have a hangover."
"Ugh! I need a witch." Conner stands up from the bed.
"Hasn't Kira already done enough for you?"
Conner turns his head, looking back at him with narrowed eyes. "Who said anything about Kira?"
"I mean, you said a witch and Kira's a witch. You two are the only people I know around here."
"Uh huh. Alright, let's get going before our first class." Conner heads towards the door, and Trent follows behind him mostly to make sure he didn't do anything stupid… again.
Conner leads him to another dormitory, knocking on one of the doors. There's some shuffling from inside the room, before the door opens. "Didn't think I'd be seeing you two so soon."
"Don't we have a class together?"
"It was a joke." Kira deadpans. Her expression changes when she addresses Trent. "Hi Trent."
Kira walks further inside, but leaves the door open. Conner looks back at Trent, mouthing, "what was that?"
"What was what?" He mouths back, before walking inside.
"So where's your roommate?"
"She's in the bathroom." Kira leads them into her own bedroom. "So what is it that you want? And couldn't wait until class for?"
"I need that hangover remedy you witches make."
Kira sighs, reaching into her cabinet. She pulls out a vial of white liquid. "Between this and last night, you owe me one."
Kira hands Conner the vial, who leaves the room, letting out a thank you over his shoulder. "Speaking of last night, are you feeling better?"
"Yes Trent. I told you I just needed some sleep."
"Good good. You um had me worried there." She blushes, before he shakes his head. "I should go after him."
"Oh go ahead. I'll see you in class."
"I thought you said we were going to class?"
"We are going to class. The class is outside." Conner walks off to the left, while Trent notices Kira in the corner of his eye. He turns his head, seeing her with several adults, carrying cages into the trees. "What are they doing?"
"What?" Conner turns around, walking back towards Trent. "Damn, can't believe I forgot. A full moon must be coming soon."
"Let me guess; we're going to turn into hairy, feral beasts." He's half-joking, but Conner's still serious. "What's the point of the cages?"
"They're so we don't attack the school. Now come on, we don't want to be late on the first day. And trust me you're not going to want to miss this." Conner runs off in the same direction as before.
"The last time you said I ended up having to save your life." Trent runs after him, finding his friend already having joined the class. Trent joins him in the line of students. Kira comes to stand by them, breathing heavily. Before he can even think to question her, there's an explosion before them. A woman appears at the front of the class, presumably the teacher.
"Welcome back, class. As usual with the beginning of the year, I want to see what you've got. And how your abilities have changed over the summer." The teacher walks down the line of students, picking them in a seemingly random order to demonstrate at the front of the class.
Trent watches the many displays of power, unsure of what he was supposed to do when it came to be his turn. Then the teacher walks over to Kira, selecting her for the next display. Kira walks to the front of the class, her breathing having returned to normal, but Trent couldn't help but be a little worried about her. She takes a deep breath, closing her eyes. It becomes windy, the leaves on the ground blowing around in the breeze aimlessly. It gets stronger and stronger until it comes to a stop.
Kira opens her eyes, her eyes on him before averting her gaze. The teacher approaches him next, but doesn't say that it's his turn. "The headmaster wants to see you in his office."
Then she turns her attention to Conner, calling him forward.
He couldn't say he was surprised that he was being called to the headmaster's office, he'd actually expected it to happen. But not on his first day of school, and during his first class no less. And when he hadn't remembered doing anything wrong.
"Trent," the headmaster greets him, no sign of anger in his voice, but he couldn't be too sure, "take a seat."
He takes a seat in the chair. "Look, whatever it is I did, I'm sorry-"
"You're not in trouble, Trent. There's just some things I would like to discuss with you."
"Oh well whatever it is, can it wait?"
"No it can't. I've already informed Tanya that you won't be in her class, for today at least. I want you to get used to what you are, especially with a full moon coming up in a few days. I'd rather that not be your first experience turning."
"What does that mean?"
"I know that Conner McKnight has been helping you-"
"Kira Ford's been great as well."
"Even better. They could help you when you turn."
"You want me to turn? That's it? Can't I just do that on my own?"
"For your first? I don't think that would be a good idea."
Trent sighs, "fine. Now can I go now?"
"Trent…" Tommy sighs, "yes."
He walks back outside, glad to be done with the conversation. As he walks, Conner and Kira come to stand on either side of him. They both say at the same time, "what happened?"
"He wants me to turn."
They both exchange looks, their faces unreadable. "That's pretty bad man."
"What's the big deal?" He stops walking, turning around to face his two friends. They exchange another look. "What?"
"You're going to break every bone in your body, this isn't going to be a walk in the park."
"Conner!"
"What? I wish I had someone to tell me this stuff when I first turned."
"You could have at least been more gentle." Kira turns his head towards Trent. "Trent?"
"I'm fine. Let's just get it over with." He walks off.
