Chapter Five

She's always found comfort in her books. Which was why she considered the school library her happy place. (She actually liked it more than the woods, which was saying something considering the type of magic she practiced.) So she heads to the library, both to return her books from last week, and get new ones. She sets the books down in the returns, watching as they fly back on to their shelves. She then selects several books, before sitting down at a table.

Just as she opens her first book, the library door creaks open, followed by someone shouting an expletive. The librarian appears from seemingly nowhere, to silence the person. Kira stifles a laugh, looking up to see the person entering the library. "Sorry about that. I forgot to keep the door open."

"It's fine." Trent whispers back, shaking his head.

"How did you even find the library? I doubt Conner knows where it is, so he didn't tell you. Did he?"

"No. I kinda followed you." He laughs nervously, before coming to stand behind her. "What are you reading?"

She shows him the cover, and he narrows his eyes, reading off the title, "The History of Lycanthropes and Vampires? What is that?"

"Vampires and werewolves have hated each other for centuries. No one knows for sure how it started, or even when it started. Just that ever since the vampire species conception, there's been tension between the two. And when things really got bad, the witches sided with the werewolves. And seers, being the 'peacekeepers of the supernatural', sided with the vampires. It's been like that ever since."

"Wow. I've got to read this."

"Oh go ahead. I've already read it. I was just rereading it." She hands him the book, and he takes a seat next to her. She reaches for another book in her stack, however she doesn't recognize the cover of the book she grabs. She must make a noise that alerts Trent, as he looks over at her.

"What is it?"

"I don't know. I've never heard of this one before. I don't even remember grabbing it."

Trent looks at the cover, "The Medallion?"

After he reads the title, the book glows, rattling on the table for the briefest moment before coming to a stop. They both jump. "Am I going crazy, or did that book just move on its own?"

"No. It definitely moved." Trent replies, sounding just as weirded out.

She tries to open the book, but it seems to be almost glued shut. When she does get it open, it falls off the table clattering quite loudly onto the floor. Before either one of them can see what's on the page, the librarian walks over. Again appearing out of seemingly nowhere. She snatches the book up from the floor, glaring at them. However upon looking at the cover, she gasps, looking as if she was about to faint.

She waves the book in front of them, asking with fear in her voice, "where did you find this?!"

"It was just in my stack. Is there something wrong with the book, miss-"

"No no no. This shouldn't be-" she continues rambling on as she disappears into the back room.

"I wonder what that was about?" Trent says.

"Something tells me it can't be good."

A storm rages in the background, yet the academy remains unaffected. The other students in the lounge also seem completely unbothered by it. Kira flips through the book in her lap, from her position on the couch. She looks over, seeing Trent staring out the window. She gets his attention, and he turns around. Blinking as he snaps out the trance he'd been in. "Sorry. I just… Shouldn't it be raining here, too?"

"No. The portal around the campus keeps the rain out. But it's close so we can still hear it." She explains. He takes one last look out the window, before taking a seat next to her. "Now, let's get back to it."

"What are we even looking for anyway?"

"Anything on this medallion. I've never seen Hayley like that, and we've had a lot of attacks on the school over the years."

"Attacks?"

"Oh it's pretty rare. There was a dragon attack when I was in the fifth grade. A goblin not that long before you got here."

"Yeah, Conner mentioned something like that. When I was in the fifth grade, I was failing math tests."

"We teach math here, too. So you'll still get to fail math tests." She smiles at him, patting his shoulder.

"Thanks." She laughs, and he laughs along with her.

Then some of the teachers came through the lounge, and it looked as if they were in a rush. The other students in the lounge looked up, murmuring amongst themselves. The teachers then disappeared into a wall. "That can't be good."

"What?" Trent says.

"I've only ever seen them go into the room that's behind that wall one other time, and that was when we had a um… demon rat problem."

"Demon rats? Like-"

"Rats from hell? Yeah, it's exactly like it sounds," she sighs,"let's keep looking."

They both keep looking through the book, finding nothing by the time they finish it. Kira slams the book shut, loud enough for the others around to start looking. "Okay okay! Let's take a break. How about we get some dinner?"

"That sounds like a good idea."

After dinner in the cafeteria, Trent walks her to her dorm room. Once they get to her door, they stop, unsure of what to say. "I um… Thank you for tonight. I'm sorry for losing my cool earlier."

"I get it. You were frustrated and stressed. I should actually be thanking you, you've been great since I got here. And I-" he trails off, staring at her. Then he's kissing her, placing a hand on the nape of her neck. Before she can react, he's already pulled away. He looks away from her, an unreadable look on his face.

"Trent."

"I'm sorry." He shakes his head, turning around to walk away.

What leads her to do this, she doesn't know. But she kisses him. He kisses her back, grabbing her face. He smiles into the kiss before pulling away, resting his forehead against hers. She puts a hand on his chest, "you don't have to be sorry."

He laughs, before the door opens. They both turn, letting each other go. "What do we have here?"

"Krista." Kira says, heat rising to her cheeks. She walks inside her dorm room, grabbing the door to close it. "I um goodnight."

"Goodnight."
