Chapter Seven
They were ushered into the cellar by one of the teachers, who checked his phone before telling all of them to get into a cage. The teacher then goes back outside, locking the door. Trent looked around the cellar, which was dark and cold and quite large. There were large cages scattered across the room. The cages themselves were about the size of a twin mattress. He can still hear the rain pouring outside. Maybe he was going crazy, but it almost sounded like the rain was hitting the door of the cellar.
Conner taps him on the shoulder, snapping him out of his trance. With a sigh, he walks towards one of the few empty cages left. Just as he does, he hears a banging noise from the outside. "What is that?"
"I don't know. But it's almost time."
The banging continues, the cellar door bursting open. Water rushes into the cellar, starting to fill the cellar. The other werewolves push to break out of their cages as the water rises. Which they eventually do, the full moon already starting to affect them. The ladder to the door had fallen, but the water had risen enough so they didn't need it. When they got out, the rain was coming down on them.
"The cellar is flooded! What do we do now?" Trent shouts over the rain.
Before anyone can answer, a cloaked figure appears in front of them.
"Do you want something to eat?"
"No."
"Do you want to go to the library?" Krista tries again.
"No."
Krista sighs. "I get that worried about Trent, but you've been staring out that window for the past hour. It's a full moon, and you probably won't see him again until tomorrow."
"I know. I just… I can't shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen tonight. Then there's what you said in the woods, and that dream…" she trails off, realizing that she's said way more than she intended to.
Krista gets up from her bed, crossing her arms over her chest. "What dream?"
"I kinda had a dream last night. And… I think my mom is coming here." The room goes silent except for the still pouring rain outside.
"Your mom?" Kira nods." Your dark magic practicing mom who hates werewolves is coming here… on a full moon? And you waited until now to say anything?"
"You know my mom has always had a flair for the dramatic. She haunted me with nightmares for weeks after I first came here, yet she never showed up here. And it can't be a coincidence that when she decides to do it again is the same night I kiss a werewolf."
Right after she says this, the lights go out in the room. Kira looks out the window, seeing that the portal was opening, letting the rain come down on the school. Kira casts a spell, creating just enough light so it wasn't pitch black. They both walk out into the hallway, finding that the lights were out there as well. "I've got a bad feeling about this."
"It'll be fine. It'll be fine." Kira chants to herself, not fully believing it herself. She closes her eyes walking in the direction of the lounge. When she opens them, she's alone and the room is completely dark. "Krista?"
She gets no response, until the door swings open. She screams, before realizing that the person who had just entered was Trent. A soaking wet Trent. "Trent! You scared me! And why are you wet?"
"Sorry. And the cellar flooded with rain water. Then there was this witch." He trails off.
"A witch?"
"She put this spell on the other wolves that put them to sleep. I thought she was going to do it to me too, but she didn't. She just walked off towards the school. I'm surprised I made it here before she did."
"I don't think you did Trent. I know this witch, and there must be a reason she let you go."
"How did you know who I was talking about?"
She bites her lip, as he approaches her. "Kira?"
"She's-"
The window breaks, glass shattering everywhere. Rain pours into the lounge, thunder clapping, and there's someone standing in the lounge. "It's her."
The woman raises her hands, and Trent goes flying across the room. He hits the wall, groaning in pain. The woman directs her attention to Kira, using her magic to lift her off the ground. She can feel someone's hands on her throat, squeezing. "Long time no see."
"Hi mom." She squeaks.
"So… where is it?"
"Where's what?"
She clenches her fist, the grip on Kira's throat tightening. "The medallion?! Where is it?!"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Her face twists in anger, before throwing Kira over her head. She fortunately landed where there wasn't any broken glass, but that didn't make the landing any less painful.
He wakes up to a sharp pain in his back. Trent groans, getting onto his feet. He's in the lounge but the room is in complete disarray. The furniture has been flipped over, there's broken glass scattered across the floor. The memories come back to him, and he looks around the room for Kira. Instead he sees a figure, frantically searching the room for something. She turns toward him, somehow completely dry from the rain. "You! Where is it?!"
"I don't know what you are talking about. And what did you do with Kira?"
"You stay away from her! I always knew you wolves were bad news!"
He opens his mouth to say something else, when he sees someone lying motionless on the ground. The person moves, and the witch turns toward her. There's a pain in his stomach, and he recognizes it as the same he felt when he first turned. But he shouts through the pain. "Stay away from her!"
The person lifts their head up, "Trent don't!"
The lounge goes completely dark just as he drops to all fours.
She can't see anything, and all she can hear is an animal growling, and her mother's screams. Lightning flashes, letting her see that Trent is attacking her mother. And he seems to be winning… for now. Then it returns to darkness for the briefest moment before light returns. "Trent!"
The two continue to fight until something hits her mother in the back. She falls to the ground, a dart sticking out of her back. The headmaster emerges from the shadows. The rain has stopped coming down on the school, but it can still be heard in the distance. Trent jumps out of the window, running off into the distance howling.
"What did you do to her?"
"It's just something to put her to sleep until we can figure out what to do with her." He looks around the lounge. "She really did a number on this place didn't she? Fortunately, it doesn't seem like she ever left the lounge, and Tanya's already fashioned a reversal for the sleeping spell she put on the rest of the students."
"So is that what you were all doing this whole time?"
"No. We were… in a faculty meeting."
"For most of the day?"
"Let's not focus on that. You should get to your room." He ushers her out of the room, but she can't help but look at the window that Trent had jumped out of. "He'll be fine. Adam will be administering the reversal to the rest of the wolves, and the portal's reclosed now."
She nods her head, but still can't shake the feeling that things were only just getting started.
