Chapter Eight
"What are you doing?" Krista sits up in bed with a yawn. She looks down at the backpack in Kira's hand. "Are you going out looking for Trent?"
Krista sighs, "let me get my shoes."
"You're coming? Since when did you like to help the wolves?"
"I don't. But you're my friend. And who's going to save you if you run into trouble… again?" Krista smiles, getting out of bed. "Now let's get this over with."
They walk outside through the lounge, which, with the exception of the still broken window, looked normal again. (The broken glass had been cleaned up, and the furniture was all back in its rightful place.) The further they walk into the woods, they find several wolves scattered throughout the woods. They're laid out on the ground, some were unconscious while others were barely conscious. Eventually, Kira does spot Trent lying amongst them. She rushes over to him, as he groans. She lays a blanket over him, just as he slowly sits up.
"I'm sorry." He mumbles.
"Sorry? For what?"
"For what happened last night."
"That wasn't your fault. McKayla did this, not you."
He makes a face. "What?"
"How do you know who she is?"
"Because… she's my mom."
"Your mom?"
She barely registers Krista walking off. She hangs her head. "Yes, that was my mom."
"Wow. I'd imagined meeting my girlfriend's mom going a lot better than that."
"Girlfriend?"
His eyes widen, and his cheeks redden. "Um… right… we never discussed… that. I'd like it if you were my girlfriend, if you want to be."
"I would like that." He leans in, their lips brushing. Then her phone dings from her backpack. She sighs, pulling her phone out.
Her expression must change as he asks, "what is it?"
"Classes are cancelled for the day."
"Isn't that a good thing?"
"Yeah, it's just… I don't know."
"What?"
"I can't explain it, but I feel like there's something more going on. Like last night wasn't the end." He's staring at her now. "You think I'm crazy."
"No I don't. Not at all. I actually-" the ground shakes beneath them cutting him off. The other wolves that were unconscious before had been woken up, just as confused. Krista and Connor run over to them.
"What was that?" Kira looks around, hoping to find the cause of the shaking. Then it happens again, only much more violent. And accompanied by what sounded like roaring.
"Um I think I know what that is, and we might want to run." Krista says, fear in her voice.
But before any of them can move, it happens again, once again accompanied by a roar. They decide to listen to Krista, and run towards the school. There's a heat against her back, the grass behind her burnt. "What the hell is that?!"
A large shadow comes over their heads just as they reach the school. A dragon flies above them, roaring at them. Tanya shouts from behind them, "get inside now!"
None of them hesitate, running inside the safety of the school. Tanya casts a spell, miniaturizing the dragon. The tiny dragon tries to crawl away, but is easily captured by Tanya, who carries the dragon inside in her hand. "Go to your rooms everyone."
Tanya walks off, and the rest of the wolves do the same. Trent whispers in Kira's ear, "what do you want to bet this has something to do with your feeling?"
"Why are we having another meeting?" Rocky says while taking a seat at the table.
Everyone looks at Tommy, who raises his hands. "Don't look at me. Tanya called for a meeting this time."
"Speaking of Tanya, where is she?" Kat asks.
At that moment, Tanya walks through the wall into the room. Rocky turns in his chair, raising his arms, "speak of the devil!"
Tanya rolls her eyes, but doesn't verbally acknowledge him. "I apologize for calling for our third meeting in as many days. But I'm sure you've heard of the dragon that attacked the school a little while ago."
She opens her palm, revealing the tiny dragon in her hand. "That's a dragon? What did you do to him?"
"Shrink spell, Rocky."
"Remind you to never piss you off." Rocky says.
Tanya closes her palm back. "There's this, McKayla's attack last night, and the… problem Hayley brought to our attention. All in a matter of days. I personally find it hard to believe that it's all a coincidence."
"What exactly are you saying?" Kat asks.
"I'm saying we might need to consider that Hayley might have been right."
The room goes silent, as they all look at each other. You could hear a pin drop until Rocky says, "wait wait wait, we don't even know if McKayla was looking after the medallion, or if today's dragon attack has anything to do with the medallion. And who's to say the book hasn't gotten it wrong?"
"The book is magic, Rocky. It would be impossible for it to be wrong. So if the book is here, that means the medallion is here." Kat says.
"And as for McKayla, why don't we just go ask her? Tanya?" Tommy says.
"This should be fun."
Tommy bangs on the bars, causing McKayla to groan. She sits up, a scowl on her face. Upon seeing who was standing on the other side of the cell door, she smiles wickedly. "Well well, I was hoping you'd visit."
Tommy shifts uncomfortably, while Tanya stifles a sigh while rolling her eyes. "That's not why we're here, McKayla. We want to know why you are here."
"I think it has something to do with the fact that he shot me with a tranq dart." McKayla deadpans.
"Don't play dumb, you know what she meant."
McKayla smirks, standing up, grabbing the bars. "Do I really have to spell it out for you? I want the medallion, and I'm not the only one. It's only a matter of time before every power hungry supernatural being will be knocking on your door. And judging by the roaring I heard earlier, it's already happened. And believe me, this is just the beginning."
