As usual all errors are my own...
Slowly getting into the chapters that I drew this whole thing from.
I know i said i wasnt going to include the gold, but i think in order to keep this going through season 2 i need to keep it... so no treasure hunt but the gold will be apart of this :)
I lazily swung slowly in the hammock outside the old fishing shake the morning following our marsh run the previous night. After John B revealed the compass and its connection we all new that there was more going on with Scooter Grub then we expected, and this was going to be more then a simple smuggling find. The case we had found was locked with a padlock and after everything else we were all exhausted deciding to figure out what was in the case later. Pope and Kie left about an hour after we docked at the Chateau trying to stay true to their new found curfews, and Sarah and John B had retreated to his room, Sarah wanting to be there for him as he processed their find.
I collapsed on the pull out the moment JJ and I entered. I was exhausted. Through half opened eyes I watched as he placed the case on the table in the middle of the room. It didn't take long for him to join me reaching his arm out and I instantly rolled so I was laying on him. Sleep wasn't far behind. Despite the crazy day however, I was up early, my mind racing with everything.
"How long you been up?" Sarah called walking down the steps. I sat up enough to watch her walk towards me pulling her hair up as she did so.
"Maybe an hour." I shrugged. "Boys still sleeping?"
"Yeah. Told John B I had to check in at the house and he grumble a 'love you' before passing back out." She smirked and I chuckled nodding at her.
"Need a ride?" I asked moving to sit up slowing the hammocks swaying.
"I got by bike." She shook her head and I leaned back again.
"They're going to want to get into that case so make sure you don't take long." I sighed closing my eyes as she mounted her bike. "You know how they get when they have to wait." She laughed and gave me a halfhearted salute before pedaling off down the road. After another thirty minutes watching the sunrise and staring at the marsh I decided it was time to get up. Making my way back into the house JJ was sprawled out on his stomach, one arm outstretched across the mattress, the other under the pillow his head was on.
I grabbed a water from the kitchen and sat at the table staring at the black case. I remember carrying it from the water, it had been heavy and lifting it out of the water had been a struggle. The lock on the right of the case was a standard padlock and I pulled it closer to take a better look.
"Whachya doing over there?" JJ's voice, rough and low came from the couch. Looking back towards him, he was now on his back his hand rubbing his eyes as he stretched out.
"Figuring this shit out while you and JB sleep the day away." I smirk and from his spot he tossed the pillow next to him at my direction, which I easily swatted away.
"Alright smarty pants, what'd you come up with?" He asked groaning as he sat up, running his hand through his hair.
"Whole bunch of nothing, other than grabbing some bolt cutters from the salvage yard," I shrugged.
"We can stop on our way out." John B came into the room.
"On our way … where?" I turned in my chair to follow his movement.
"My dad's compass was on Scooters boat." He said and I nodded, JJ came up leaning on the back of my chair staring curiously at his friend. "Then Lana Grubs must know something." There was really no point in arguing with him he had made up his mind and to be fair JJ and I had nothing better going on so we got ourselves dressed and out the door.
"So Grubs is on the other side of the island yeah?" I asked sliding the Twinkie side door open and stepping in finding my spot behind the drivers seat.
"Yeah, why?" John B asked starting up the old Volkswagen and it slowly rumbled to life.
"We need to make a stop on our way." I sighed feeling both boys turn to look at me.
"Little vague… care to elaborate?" John B asked pulling the gear into drive.
"My house." I said quietly leaning my head back leaning against the back of his seat.
"You're kidding right?" JJ commented and I could feel him staring at me.
"I can't keep wearing the same shirts and shorts." I smirked as I mimicked what he had told me a week ago when I had dropped him off at his house. "If we are lucky after the whole Midsummer fiasco my dad dipped back to the main land." I knew the boys were behind me having a silent conversation with their eyes and I just ignored the uncomfortable silence, opening my eyes to watch the trees pass by on the side of the road. Crossing the bridge to Figure 8 the houses went from trailers and run down shacks to ones with too many windows and multiple levels. John B parked outside a long driveway, knowing better then to pull up to the house.
"What are you doing?" I asked when JJ opened the door started to follow me up the drive.
"Yeah you really think I'm letting you go in there alone." He scoffed and I could tell he was not happy that I wanted to stop here in the first place.
"You realize how much of a double standard this is right?" I shook my head looking over my shoulder at him. All I got in response was a confused scowl, "You wouldn't let me go with you into your house and yet here you are following me to mine."
"If I recall you did come into my house, even when I told you not to." He said and I could tell this was not an argument worth fighting. Rolling my eyes I just focused on the long walk up the driveway. We made our way around to the back of the house and up the lattice siding on the house to the second story roof.
"The fact I have to break into my own house is ridiculous," I said under my breath as I slowly made my way to my window pushing the white trim up to lift the window. Quietly I slid into my room and held the window for JJ to follow. Grabbing a duffel bag from under my bed I tossed it to him and told him just stuff as many things as he could in there. The request instantly turned to regret when I heard him snickering in the corner.
"Why don't you ever wear these?" he asked holding up a pair of lace underwear that I had stuffed deep into one of my drawers. My cheeks started to burn as I blushed. I tore them from his grip and tossed them aside glaring at him. I was about to make a comment about the whole thing when I heard a voice down in the entryway echoing up into my room.
"What do you mean it wasn't there?" My dads voice exclaimed loudly and I froze. JJ's hand instantly went to my arm trying to pull me to the window.
"Wait." I whispered and pulled away from him moving to my door and opening it slightly with a hiss of protest coming from behind me. I raised my finger to him to 'give me a minute' and slipped out the door pressing myself to the wall beside the staircase leading down to the front door. I had heard my dad's conversations before, but this one seemed different… and what can I say curiosity got the best of me.
"Until whoever has the case is located we can't do anything." My dad continued. Looking around the wall I watched him pace pack and forth. "Are you sure he had information implicating you?" I couldn't hear what was happening on the other end of the phone but whoever he was talking to was yelling. "Have them talk to her then and get back to me." JJ came up beside me and I jumped. Putting my finger to my lips I went back to listening to the one sided conversation.
"I don't know what you expect me to here, if I don't know what information he had on you I can't begin to prepare any sort of defense. There is no case if there is no evidence as long as nothing is led back to you, you shouldn't need to worry. Just keep going about your day and we will deal with this when we have to."
"Lets go Roe." He whispered pulling me back towards the room and I hesitated for just a second looking back down at my dad as he left towards his office. Following JJ we made our way out the window and back to John B who was anxiously tapping on the side of his door.
"We good." He asked as we both got in and sat down throwing the duffle bag towards the back of the vehicle.
"Yeah we're good." I nodded with a heavy sigh. It was quiet as we drove back into the cut and towards Lana Grubs.
"I gotta admit, your father's compass in Scooter's boat, that's a freaky." JJ broke the silence reaching up and grabbing the compass from the dashboard. John B immediately went to grab it from him and JJ swatted his hand away. "I was just looking at it."
"Yeah. That's why we're going to talk to Ms. Lana, figure this whole thing out." John B sighed putting his hand back on the wheel. I moved from my spot behind John B and looked over the passenger seat resting my chin on it as I watched JJ fiddle with the compass.
"Sure why not….her husband just drowned, I'm sure would love to talk to us." I rolled my eyes, sarcasm dripping from my words. John B ignored my comment, but JJ looked at me out of the corner of my eye agreeing with my statement. Pulling into Ms. Lana's house, I couldn't help whistling as JJ let me out of the van and we approached the multi colored house.
"You know what this house looks like?" JJ asked and John B and I looked at him with eyebrow raised curiously. "Whoever lives her smokes too much weed." He emphasized the 'too' which giggled at. JJ was the last one to say there was such a thing as too much weed, but looking at all the colors of the house I couldn't argue with him.
As we go closer, the quiet that had surrounded us earlier was interrupted by yelling and smashing glass from the house. We slowed and I felt my heart begin to race as the yelling continued. I could see JJ tense and tried to get John B's attention but John B only shushed him and put his finger to his lips, slowly continuing forward.
"Bullshit!" a man yelled and something clearly shattered against the inside wall of the house.
"Maybe we should come back…" I tried to suggest staying behind the boys.
"No… no shut up." John pressed and took a deep breath as we pressed forward slowly.
"Look it's probably a little too soon…"
"Shut up JJ." John B said and JJ and I looked at each other both anxious. JJ's hands were clenched as he stepped closer slowly.
"Tell me where it is, or I'll fuck you up…" the yelling continued and then I heard a woman gasping… sobbing followed by another crash and I flinched like what ever was being thrown was coming towards me. The women screamed and I felt the anxiety turn to fear and my breathing became quicker.
"You're hurting me!"
"I.." JJ tried again but John B cut him off again and I was starting to get irritated. This was not a situation we wanted to be in, not after what happened in the Marsh, not after what JJ had been through not three days ago.
"Come on." John B whispered and before checking with us ran to the house trying to look into an open window. I lightly smacked JJ and pointed to John B as another crash rocked the small house. We quickly ran towards the house and JJ grabbed John B pulling him away from the window. I stood with my back at the far end of the house so I could look around at the front door. The yelling continued but the mens voices carried over each other and it was hard to hear what they were yelling about, but the women crying was very clear.
"Where the fuck is it!" the man demanded and I closed my eyes leaning my head against the house trying to take a few deep breaths to slow my pounding heart.
"I don't know." The women cried
"Is it here in the house?" something crashed against the wall again and the Lana cried out.
"Please!" Lana whimpered, "I… I didn't…"
"Still think we should stay?" JJ asked through clenched teeth.
"They weren't in the boat! Where is it Lana?"
"I don't know!" she screamed. There was more thuds as things were thrown and glass was breaking. To my left JJ was looking at the ground. His hands had a slight tremor and I reached out slowly moving my hand down his arm, forcing my finger into his clenched fist intertwining them with his. He relaxed slightly whispering to himself 'don't listen.' The walls of the house shuddered and I ducked my head. I watched as dust came out of the window and I scowled.
"Is that paint?" I asked as JJ ran a hand through his hair and whatever had come out the window fell from his hair.
"Yes, it's paint." John B said through clenched teeth and he tried to look through the window above him.
"Let's get the hell out of here!" one of the men said and I scooted closer to the side of the house and peered my head around to see two men slamming out the front door. The door slamming against the house. I could still hear Lana inside crying. JJ came up beside me looking over my head as John B stepped in front of me to look at the two men jumping into a large white boat parked at the end of the Grubs dock.
"Shit." I cursed looking at the boat and the men in it.
"Dude, those were the guys that shot at us!" JJ said coming to the same conclusion I had. I shoved the boys back as the boat started its engine and began to turn down the marsh. Once the boat motor could barely be heard John B was moving around us and rushing into the house. JJ's sense were on high alert as he looked in every direction as we followed fingers still intertwined. When we got in John B was kneeling by Ms. Lana, who was leaning against the bathroom wall.
I released my hand from JJ's and grabbed a rag that was laying amongst the thrown furniture. Moving into the bathroom, I knelt down in front of her, bringing the rag to a cut on her forehead. She was still sobbing and I tried to be gently as she flinched away from me. She slowly started to come back to herself, and I smiled softly at her.
"Ms. Lana?" John B called out to her drawing her attention away from and towards the door. "Hey.. Hey are you okay?"
"Dude… She's tweaking," JJ hissed and all I could do was scowl at him.
"She might need a doctor" I said as I looked at her injuries I could see. Her face was bruised and there was blood drops all down her shirt.
"Let's call the sheriff's department." John B nodded.
"No, no, no! No cops please!" she suddenly cried out and I jumped slightly at the sudden outburst.
"That's not good man, Come lets just go," JJ shook his head. I was starting to agree with him. Everything about this situation was giving me a very bad vibe.
"You shouldn't be here," Lana stated grabbing my wrist pulling me towards her. My eyes grew wide and my heart about stopped. She pulled me towards her slightly looking at me, tears streaming down her face. JJ was making a step towards me but John B stopped him.
"Ms. Lana who were those guys?" I asked softly, despite the grip she had on my wrist I tried to keep my voice calm and soothing. She loosened the hands on my wrist and looked from me to the guys.
"They were looking for something."
"Does it have anything to do with this?" John B asked pulling her attention to him and he held the compass out to her. "Do you know anything about this? This was my father's and Scooter had it. Why?" Ms. Lana was slowly starting to calm down but the moment she looked at the compass, fear overwhelmed her features again. I pulled my arms away and stepped back as she turned quickly to John B.
"Scooter didn't have it, okay?" She begged. "Don't tell anyone you have it." I moved quickly out of the bathroom and JJ pulled me to him keeping a hand on me as he pulled John B's shoulder.
"Come on," he pleaded.
"Why?" John B questioned ignoring JJs tugging.
"They can't know, you've gotta get out of here."
"John B lets go." I said start to feel the panic rise in my chest.
"What do you know about the compass?" he demanded.
"Go!" she yelled, "Get out!" At that exclamation, JJ pulled John B to his feet and pulled him towards door.
"We gotta go. Lets go!" JJ stated and was able to pull John B the rest of the way out of the house. We ran back to the Twinkie all our sense on high. Turning once we reached the car I reached my hand into John B's short pocket and pulled out the keys ignoring the look I received from both of them.
"Get in the damn car." I ordered moving to the driver side. Once I heard the doors close, I put it in drive and got us as far away from the ransacked shack as I could.
"What the actual fuck." JJ breathed out and I glanced at him from the corner of my eye. He was visibly uncomfortable, and he was clenching and unclenching his fist trying to stop them from shaking. I drew my attention to the rearview mirror at John B, who was leaning back in the seat staring at the compass.
When we made it back to the Chateau, John B and JJ both separated needing space. I made a call to Pope and Kie telling them we ran into some trouble. I found JJ sitting on the dock. I made sure to make some sound as I approached so I wouldn't startle him. He didn't turn to me but he did acknowledge my approach with a small nod. Kneeling behind him I just wrapped my arms around him pressing a kiss to his shoulder. He slowly reached up to my arms and held them. I could feel his heart beating quickly in his chest. Yelling was something he dealt with enough in his own home, and he had just been drug into a situation that triggered old memories and traumas he tries to forget on a daily basis.
We didn't have to say anything. He needed something to pull him back as much as I need to just know he was there. After sitting silently, we heard tires coming towards the Chateau and for a brief second I turned quickly expecting to see the square groupers from earlier, only to reveal Kie's jeep pulling in. With a sigh of relief, I pulled JJ up and we walked towards the porch to explain the situation to Kie and Pope.
Once they were settled and JJ was able to finally talk he let everything out.
"And we were right outside like this," he said using the shacks wall to emphasize what happened "And all we hear is just 'Bam! Bam! Bam!' Knocking paint off the wall… from the inside! Alright? And I'm just looking at him, like…. Wait, look at this shit. Look at it."
He moved over to Kie and shook out his hair. I was watching the reenactment from the steps of the porch looking out over the yard. I had not desire to relive it, I was still trying to shake the uneasy feeling it had given me, my hands subconsciously going to my wrist where Lana had grabbed them.
"That's dandruff," Kie rolled her eyes, and Pope pushed JJ away from him, but he left behind the paint chips that were in his hair.
"Look at all that. All right! That's paint." He stated. "At that point, I was just like… I'm waiting for death." I cringed at his statement.
"Okay, so you guys saw the guys that shot at us right?" Pope rolled his eyes, and I could tell he wasn't quiet believing the tale JJ was telling. Kie looked at me and all I did was nod as JJ answered.
"Yeah"
"Well, did you get a good description of them? What did they look like?" Pope asked. "Anything we can bring to a police report?"
"Burly." JJ shrugged.
"Angry." I added
"That's not very helpful," Kie rolled her eyes.
"Okay, no like the type of guy at my dad's garage," JJ tried to explain better, "Seriously though, I can tell you with full confidence, these boys, these killers…" he was pulling out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket tapping them to his palm before pulling one out lighting it and taking a long drag before releasing the smoke, "They're square groupers."
"What does this square grouper look like? Specifically?" Pope asked and I could see this conversation was just going in circles. I looked over at John B who still hadn't said anything since the confrontation. Pope and JJ were still arguing when I stood up and walked over to John B.
"Hey, we're going to figure this out okay." I said softly placing my hand on his wrist. He gave me a half hearted smile and nod. "Sarah heading this way?"
"Uh yeah… bringing those bolt cutters we couldn't grab." He shrugged taking in a deep breath and putting the compass in his pocket. I turned back to the others, JJ was now leaning heavily on the shack.
"It's a heavy vibe right now, okay, I'm not liking this very much," he said exhausted.
"Why do they want the compass?" Kie asked redirecting the conversation.
"It's a piece of shit," Pope commented, "You couldn't pawn it off for like five bucks if you wanted to…" I smacked his arm as I passed him and he instantly apologized to John B, who didn't seem to hear him.
"Its got to be what's in that case." Kie added and we all looked through the window at the case sitting on the table. Whatever was in that case was a bigger headache then this whole thing was supposed to be.
"Whatever is in the case is fucking heavy." JJ commented.
"So lets find out what's in it," Sarah said coming up the steps bolt cutters in hand. She when straight to John B and he embraced her like they hadn't seen each other in weeks. The love they had for each other was something I envied. It seemed to be so easy for them and I couldn't figure out how they went on one adventure to the main land together and came back in love. I blamed my skepticism on love on the fact I had never truly felt love from any one, with my mom leaving and my dad, being… well my dad, I wasn't sure what love felt like. However, the way JJ made me feel, I wasn't sure if it was love, but I knew it was more than the how any of the other Pogues made me feel being with them.
JJ pulled me from my thoughts as he passed me, his hand on my back as we walked into the small living room area of the Chateau. We crowded around the black case all seemingly staring at it waiting for it to move, or open.
"Whatever is in here could change everything." John B said holding the bolt cutters loosely in his uncasted hand.
"Are we prepared for what's in there? I mean really prepared to deal with consequences." Pope cautioned. He was running all the scenarios over in his head and as good as all the scenarios seemed to be when I thought of them, there were those that could potentially lead us down a dark road.
"Nothing to lose." I said, it was more to myself and I hadn't realized I had said it out loud until JJ repeated the words and John B nodded.
"Alright then let's see what we got." John B said placing the bolt cutters on the lock, pushing the handles together snapping it and it fell to the table with a small thud. Looking around at us John B moved cautiously to the latches flipping them both and the case lifted slightly with a small pop as the seal released. Holding my breath, I watched him lift the lid. He lifted it about halfway before letting it fall completely open, the lid falling to the table.
"Holy shit." I said my mouth falling slightly open.
"Oh. My. God." Sarah added. Kie had her hand over her mouth and Pope had his hands on his head as he stared at the contents of the case.
"Is that…" JJ started his words lost as he stood in shock.
"It's Gold." John B. nodded. The case that I had hauled up from the Grady White, that the men had shot at them for that attacked Ms. Lana for…. It was lined with small gold bars, a wheat simple stamped on the top of them.
