Integra was always told that Abraham Van Helsing was a good man. He was a man of integrity who loved his country so much that he captured the king of the vampires to fight against his own kind. That her grandfather sought to protect humanity at all costs and apparently to Integra, it cost him his own humanity.

It all started when Alucard had once again done something stupidly terrible and the commander had actually run out of ways to punish him. Sure some punishments were more effective than others, but Integra liked to think up more, using the same one could get at boring, so she asked Walter, "What would my great grandfather do?" Suddenly Alucard's eye narrowed in rage and was that a bit of fight? The vampire gave nasty snarl and in a flurry of buts disappeared from the office While Walter went to get a cup of tea for her. Integra wondered what had made Alucard upset. All she did was ask about her great grandfather's methods of punishment. The thought that she should demand an answer from the vampire, but Integra decided not to, she would let him cool down a bit. Then it happened several days again, but this time it was Walter who bought up Abraham, "Oh dear, I didn't mean to upset him."

"It would seem that Alucard harbors some kind of hate for my great grandfather and a bit of fear."

Alucard sulked in his chair; he had thought that Integra would be different that she would be better. Sure he annoyed her with his new discoveries or really piss her off by doing in one things or even things that border lined sexual such as phasing into her shower when she was in it- Integra had grown used to that. But to think that she would stoop so low like her great grandfather made him feel all kinds of things and none of them were nice. Perhaps he had been wrong in thinking that Integra would be different from her ancestors before her. Their last names did not have the word 'hell' in it for no reason. Alucard sighed may be the entire Hellsing line were cowards and monsters. Integra noticed that Alucard was upset at the mere mention of Abraham and she had made it her mission to find out how Van Helsing had defeated Alucard and sealed him to the family that could lead to resentment and hate. Maybe her great grandfather's journals would fill in the blanks and tell her how to punish Alucard when he did something stupid.

However when Integra reached the shelf where Abraham's journals were supposed to be, they were all gone, only one remained. Her father had shown her the journals when she was younger but never got around to reading them. "This is better than nothing" the knight said to herself. She would have Walter search to see if there any more hidden away for now this would have to do.

I have defeated the great Dracula with the help of my comrades, no more will he threaten humanity Instead I will study him, as I would study any specimen. I intend to see what makes him a vampire. Perhaps I can use him in some sort of way to fight the other denizens of the darkness including the spawns he had created. Enslaving him will take time and research, for now studying the vile creature will have to suffice at the moment he is being transported to the laboratory I had made to prepare for such research. I am eager to get started.

Research? Specimen? These terms troubled Integra, sure she did see Alucard as a slave bound to the Hellsing family but was this how Alucard became to be ? She knew that Alucard was more powerful than the average vampires her family had a hand in doing so but at what cost? She read on:

How the creature howls in torment and agony bring me much joy I must admit. This is how many of victims must have felt when he approached them with the intent of slaughtering them in his demonic eyes. They agony they felt ashen he ripped their jugulars and feasted on their blood. I have no intention on drinking the creature's foul blood, but I do not mind spilling it under my feet, if it is to protect humanity. This abortion must learn to kneel before a human master and obey every command given to it. To never raise a hand or fang to its master. I have created such a seal that would bind this abomination to the Hellsing bloodline. Once the experiments are finished then we will proceed with imbuing the beast with more power and the sealing of that power, that way only the master will be able to choose whether or not he can access it. And of course the fall safe plan has been set up. If the bond between master and slave is broken, the monster shall be destroyed no matter how much blood he consumes.

'Beast', abomination, abortion creature'; more words that bothered Integra. She was not naive to think that the resident vampire was not a monster. He was a monster in every sense of the word. Alucard was sometimes hard to control, so it took one with an iron will to control the nosferatu, Good thing Integra had that. Alucard also liked to annoy her with his ridiculous behavior like phasing into her shower while she was in it or buying a bunch of puppies and setting them loose in her office. But Integra never thought of Alucard in the terms that her great-grandfather used even if he was a pain in the ass. How could anyone think of Alucard in that manner? A big red moron or grinning idiot but 'abortion' was a word Integra had never thought of Alucard. And since she was of the line of Abraham Van Helsing, what did he truly think of her? Integra's grandfather was an unknown factor and her father Arthur's will had dwindled and so he locked Alucard away for twenty years. Integra had no idea what her uncle Richard would have done when he inevitably found the vampire. The commander sighed and closed her eyes, what the hell was going on? Integra was morbidly curious to see what else her great-grandfather had written but at the same, the torture that her great-grandfather had inflicted on Alucard. She was conflicted; to know was to make sure that she didn't do whatever the hell it was that Abraham did to the vampire. To not know was to make a terrible mistake. All of this thinking made Integra tired and soon she fell asleep in her chair.

Integra was jolted awake by a howl of agony, looking around she knew that she was in the basement of the Hellsing Manor, but in a room she had never seen before. Instead of the rooms that Alucard and Seras usually occupied, this one looked like an operation room of the 1800s. Dim swinging lanterns swung from the ceilings and candles were attached to metal poles to illuminate room more. The stone floor was covered with large pools of blood that spilled from the occupant strapped to the table. Several men stood around the table wearing grey clothing and masks and over their clothes were brown leather aprons. Some of the men used what passed for surgical tools in that time. Others scribbled madly into notebooks including one Abraham Van Helsing. Whenever Alucard gave an anguished cry, some of the men looked uncomfortable but Van Helsing urged them to go on stating that the vampire was a monster who made his victims scream. He was merely feeling the same thing they did. This was justice for them

Integra rose from the chair and looking over one of the man's shoulder, she saw a naked Alucard chained to the table secured with blessed silver manacles. The nudeness was not surprising to the commander, there times that the vampire drove her mad, with his 'naked vampire day shenanigans. What shocked Integra was the fact that the vampire's chest and abdomen was split open everything from the waist down was peeled back and held open with large silver needles, exposing muscles, tendons and bones. The vampire's mouth was held open so that his fangs could be inspected, usually a painful extraction of one and held under a magnifying glass, notes jotted down, then shoved back into the gum, where it knitted back. Abraham wanted to see what made the vampire tick, for lack of better words. From Alucard's undead brain and heart all the way down even to his privates.

This treatment of Abraham towards Alucard sickened Integra. Sure Alucard was a monster, one that was used to hunt and kill his own kind, a slave that would serve the Hellsing blood here. But he was also a source of entertainment and wisdom, one that Integra didn't know what she would do without. The vampire's head turn towards hers and for a long moment fearful red eyes stared into sad blue ones. Alucard tried to call out to Integra, but couldn't move his lips around the silver gag. One of the men noticed and said "Sir, it looks like he's trying to say something." Abraham's cold reply was, "'It', not 'he'! Such pronouns are used to refer to humans, not monsters, like this. Let's see what this thing to trying to say." Integra's hands clenched into fists; how dare this cruel idiot refer to Alucard as an 'it'? When Alucard's mouth from the instrument keeping it open the vampire only said one word "… master..."

"Yes, yes I am your master" said Abraham impatiently.

But Alucard, still looking in Integra's direction said "No...not you, her..." Abraham and the men looked in the same direction as the vampire, but they saw nothing. Abraham sighed impatiently, "Stupid beast there is nothing there!" The other looked around fearfully, perhaps somehow Alucard had conjured up some spawn or there was some invisible apparition waiting to destroy them. Maybe it was something far stronger than the vampire that was secured to the table and she was coming to save him.

"Master..." groaned Alucard again.

Abraham had about enough and ordered that his men to continue. With his mouth forced open again, Alucard could only look pleadingly to Integra. For a moment Integra stood rooted to the place where she was, but then, after taking a deep breath, she walked over to the table, stroking the vampire's face, she said softly, "Now I understand." Slowly the room filled with a thick fog and it grew as it moved further and further from the knight, then it was dark. Integra awoke once more; she was back in the manor's library. "What the hell just happened?" the knight thought to herself. Then looking down at the journal on her lap, it all came back to her. Integra tossed the journal into the fireplace and headed towards the basement.

Integra found Alucard huddled against a wall, knees up to his chins with his arms wrapped around them. The look on his face made him look like a small child who had just seen something frightening. Without saying anything Integra sat down next to the vampire; to which Alucard slightly recoiled. The two said nothing for several minutes.

"Alucard, I am deeply sorry for what I said" said Integra softly. "I read one of my great grandfather's journals and I should have known.. "

"You couldn't have known what Abraham had done to me. I never told anyone and the journals were destroyed, or at least should have." replied Alucard

"It seems that my father either forgot one or left it there on purpose." Integra had a feeling that it was on purpose, Arthur never did anything without a good reason. Perhaps he had wanted her to be a gentler master to Alucard than his previous masters were.

Alucard gave a deep sigh, "I had a dream that I was there being experimented on again. For some strange reason you were there, master." His hand went to his face, where Integra had touched him.

"I had the same dream. Abraham was an asshole."

"I agree."

Slave and master sat in silence again, before Alucard said, "Sometimes I have nightmares about my early days here. And I think that I deserved the torture I received." Integra started to protest, but Alucard shook his head, "I believe that what happened was a way to punish me for what I did. I am a monster, but even as a human I was the same. And there are times that I don't know if God has finished punishing me". Integra had no idea what to say, so she said nothing. "I hope God is finished punishing me" murmured Alucard as placed his head in Integra's lap and drifted off to sleep. The commander rubbed Alucard's cheek softly and whispered "Now I understand, my Count. Now I understand."

The End
