Edward Nygma, a man who worked in forensics in the Gotham City Police Department gave a sigh as he sat down at his desk to eat his lunch, his lunch consisting of a bottle of water and a salad and ham sandwich.
Edward was a tall man who wore glasses, had short dark brown hair and brown eyes. Edward was of the age of twenty-eight years old, he was intelligent and he loved riddles. He often made-up riddles and told them to people as he found this fun.
Today was Edward's birthday, but he wasn't expecting anything, not any presents, or cards or even for someone to wish him a happy birthday. He wasn't very popular in the GCPD and was often teased because of his riddles. He knew what people thought of him, he knew what they said about him behind his back…He knew that people thought that he was creepy, annoying, and weird.
He didn't have any friends, though Jim Gordon was nice to him, and he wasn't close to his family so he didn't have any birthday plans, though he was planning later on after work buying himself a cupcake from a nearby bakery as a small birthday treat to himself. Nothing big, but still, it would be something nice for himself to enjoy on his birthday.
Edward was about to unwrap his sandwich and start eating his lunch when he heard a knock on his door.
Surprise filled Edward at the interruption, and he wondered for a moment that it might be Jim Gordon or Harvey Bullock wanting his forensic help to solve a case.
Edward put down his sandwich, stood up before walking to the door and opening it to reveal a man.
The man looked quite handsome, possibly in his middle to late twenties, he had vivid pretty emerald green eyes, wore round, black glasses and had short, jet-black messy hair. On the man's forehead he had a unique looking scar which was in the shape of a lightning bolt. The man had a slender but slightly muscled build, was of average height and was currently looking nervous.
The man looked familiar to Edward, and he was sure that he had met this man before during work but he couldn't remember the name.
Edward smiled at the man, "Hello, can I help you?" he said politely and with a smile upon his face.
The man nodded, "Yes, um…Edward Nygma, um…is it…Is it your birthday today?" asked the man.
Edward brown eyes widened with surprise for a brief moment and a touched sort of feeling washed over him. Someone, even if he didn't work closely with them, remembered his birthday. Well, he did tell some people at work last week that his birthday was coming up so maybe this man had overheard and wanted to be nice.
"Y..Y..Yes , yes it is."
The man smiled shyly, looking relieved and he got something out from behind his back. Edward's eyes went to what the man had in his hands and he saw that it was a gift wrapped present, it looked hand wrapped with the good kind of wrapping paper and it had a envelope taped to it which Edward assumed contained a card.
"This is for you, I hope you like it. Happy…Happy Birthday"
Edward smiled happily, as he accepted the gift "Thank you so much, whatever it is I am sure that I will love it" he said.
The man smiled and still remained standing there. "And I..I also have something else to say if you don't mind"
Edward watched as the man in front of him blushed again and he looked nervous again.
"Yes, of course you can. Say what you want. What is it?"
The man continued to look nervous and after a moment of silence as though to calm his nerves he spoke, saying something that made Edward feel very surprised yet again.
"I…I like you…in a romantic way, um…I have a crush on you. Um…and I think the riddles you tell people are…are..I think they're clever."
The man in front of him blushed again and this time Edward was blushing now, his mouth slightly agape with shock.
"Um….right , yes. That's what I wanted to say. Um…I hope you enjoy the rest of your birthday today Nygma, bye" said the man before then soon quickly leaving the room.
Edward, feeling speechless and hoping that the man had been genuine in his words, felt himself happy as he returned to his desk. He was clutching the present in his hands, holding onto it as though whatever was hidden inside was something precious. His hands were shaking with happy emotion at what had just occurred to him.
It was his birthday today and someone, an attractive someone, had wished him happy birthday, given him a present and confessed romantic feelings towards him. He felt happy and his hands continued to tremble as he opened the present carefully.
He opened the card first, as that is the proper way to go about opening presents. He looked at the card and saw that the card was one of the store-bought ones, the design on it had balloons, a gift displayed on a blue background with the words in different colours that said Happy Birthday! He opened up the card and read it, inside the card it said:
To Edward Nygma
Happy Birthday!
I hope you have a great day and like the present
- Your co worker Harry Potter
"So that's his name" muttered Edward out loud to himself with a happy smile, "One mystery down"
He moved onto the present itself after putting the card gently down upon his desk.
It appeared that the man who had given the present was terrible at present wrapping, but Edward didn't mind, he loved challenges and anyway he found it amusing. He chuckled softly to himself.
He carefully unwrapped it, and once unwrapped he placed the wrapping paper on his desk, neatly folded.
Relief and happiness and that same touched feeling that he had felt before washed through him as he saw what he had received as a birthday present. It was a box of chocolates, with a good brand and he saw that on the back of the box it had a good selection so there was sure to be a good amount of the chocolates that he would enjoy. The chocolates weren't the only thing in his present however and this was the thing he received that made him really happy.
It was a book, specifically a leather-bound book and handwritten inside in neat writing was riddles, lots of riddles, riddles on almost every single page. He flipped the pages all the way back to the very first page and saw that there was a note.
Reading the note, he saw that it said:
Edward Nygma, I know you like riddles so I looked up some on the internet and filled this book with them. I hope you like it!
Edward was still smiling as he still sat staring at his birthday present and his birthday card. Everything about it was so thoughtful and it was so nice to receive a confession on his birthday from someone.
He stayed at the desk for some time, thinking to himself and eating his lunch. He decided that he would give his answer to the confession tomorrow so he could have tonight to think it over and in the meantime, he wanted to thank Harry for the present, card and making him feel so happy and accepted on the day of his birthday.
