Chapter 28
Doris McGarrett, AKA Shelburne, had been doing fine in hiding. She had a nice place in Japan, she had a quiet life as a retiree that no one questioned, and she had been happy. Did she miss her family? Yes. Did she wish that she could go home to her loving husband and most of all her two kids? Every fucking day. But she couldn't.
She couldn't because she was a spy and her family was in danger because of her. So she had had to leave, had to leave and stay away to protect them.
So imagine her surprise when she got news that someone was flashing her code name and threatening the release of a secret microfiche she swore she had hidden all too well for anyone to find, on the dark web. She had been livid. That microfiche was the only reason she was free, the secrets on that thing was why the CIA had left her alone for so long.
And Wo Fat fucking had it.
Not only did he have it, he was taunting her with it.
The message he had floated on the dark web had been very, very clear. He gave her a number to call, and they'd talk out how she could get it back. But she knew a trap when she saw one. She was a spy, just like he was. She knew his play book, just like he knew hers.
What she figured was that he would expect her to try and steal it back from him. He'd be ready for that, so she wasn't going to go that route. No, she was going to go a completely different one.
She was going to grab the one thing that she knew he'd crack for. His greatest treasure.
She was going to grab his sister.
The girl she was going to kidnap wasn't his real sister, of course. She was simply a stray he had picked up and kept, for some reason. It was completely against his natural behaviour that when Doris got the update, the notification that this girl was in his life, she had almost thought that they had the wrong man. It was clearly an imposter with real-people emotions. Wo Fat didn't have those.
But she saw pictures, and heard rumors and stories about all the stuff that he was doing for her and she had to admit that, not only was it him, but that he was clearly very attached to her for some reason.
And she was going to use that against him.
She had left Japan for Hawaii two weeks ago. She spent a full week learning the girl's patterns, only to learn that she didn't have one. In fact, Wo Fat barely let her leave the safe house he had her in, and it would not work to grab her out of that house. He was too attentive, and he rarely left her alone.
The suddenly, she started leaving the house. Doris couldn't give up that chance so she made moves to grab her. Except she had been giving Doris the slip all week.
Every time Doris tried to grab her the girl up and vanished.
She had disappeared out of cars, out of restaurants. She disappeared around a corner once and out of a changing room.
It was like she was taunting her. And it was making her angry.
Normally Doris wouldn't try this, but she had no choice. Late one night, when she was sure Wo Fat and his rabbit-masked crony were out of the house, she snuck it. The girl was alone, it was late at night she'd either be drunk or asleep. It was the easiest time to try and grab her, and hopefully this time she wouldn't just up and disappear.
She couldn't find her in any of the normal areas she frequented which meant she was in bed. So that was where Doris went.
The intention was to drug her, tie her up, get her into the car and then call Wo Fat and demand a trade.
She'd set up a trap for him to make sure he didn't double cross her. Wo Fat would no doubt do the same, but Doris was smarter than him and she knew she'd get the upper hand.
She slipped into that room and then quickly snuck up towards the bed. She was quiet, silent, there was no way that anyone could have heard anything. Except the girl rolled over, her eyes nothing but these white glowing orbs in the darkness.
That… That wasn't normal.
There was a crackle, a sort of electric hum that grated over her senses and then she was dropping. She dropped into darkness, not in the sense that she was unconscious she was very much awake, but it was dark.
Dark and she felt almost weightless. Then in the dark came a flash, a flash of bright lights and from each bright light were strings, strings of all sorts of different colors and they were moving.
She was shielded though, something was keeping them at bay.
She was surrounded by them those, these twinkling lights like stars with their strings like comet tails. They were so pretty that she almost forgot to panic about where the hell she had ended up.
Then there was another flash and in that flash, like lightning in the dark, she saw an outline. It was a figure, something large, something with what seemed to be the shadow of wings extending from it's back. Something with glowing white eyes.
Oh god.
She knew there were rumours around Wo Fat's ward, of strange happenings and abilities, but she never thought any of them were true.
A crackle of orange ran through the darkness, hitting whatever shield had been surrounding Doris.
It popped, like a bubble, against the current and her weightlessness went away. With it came the cold, and the heaviness, and the strings.
They bound her up, held her in place, visions of the past, of all her fears flashed before her eyes, as the suffocating darkness took her breath away. And it held her, until she truly was unconscious, lost in a completely different darkscape.

It was the middle of the night when Ro woke up her two brothers and told them she had caught an intruder.
Wo Fat had assumed it was another kidnapper as it was the most common kind of intruder. Someone was always trying to steal his little Ro away from him. He was expecting, McGarrett, on a rescue mission since he seemed to still think that Wo Fat was out for blood.
And while he got a McGarrett, it wasn't Steven who was at his feet.
Wo Fat stared down at Doris who was still crumpled on Rowan's floor.
He knew exactly what this play was. He had figured that she would realize that she wouldn't be able to get the microfiche from him, and when she did she'd try to grab his Ro instead, to leverage her against him. It was why he had been trying to keep her home so much, to keep her safe. That if she was to go out, it was a crowded place, and not somewhere she routinely went to. He never thought she'd chance taking her from the safe house, especially since Wo Fat rarely left her alone there.
What horrified him was Ro telling him that Doris had been following her around all week. There had been a series of near-misses where Rowan had to portal away before she could grab her. She had been hoping that Doris would get frustrated and come to the safe house to nab her, and that was exactly what she had done.
"Maybe we should drug her," Con had said. "Just to be safe. Just to be sure she isn't faking it."
"She took a ride through the void without my protection. She's gonna be down for the count."
Wow. Hard core. Even for her.
"Right," he said turning to Ro. "Could you please go get me something to drink? Maybe something for Con too?"
"Sure. Whiskey, right?"
Both men nodded and Ro ran off to do asked.
"Why are you sending her away?"
Wo Fat nodded down to the unconscious form of the woman who had once pretended to love him like a mother did. "Well, we have to get her ready for torture…"
"Yeah, but Ro said if we do that it's not going to work," Con reminded him which just made Wo Fat frown.
"Ro's judgement and strings are all clouded because of Steven. If we want answers, I'm going to have to make her talk. Now, can you help me pick her up so we can get her somewhere before Ro figures out what I'm doing? I'd like to escape the lecture if I could."
Con seemed to think it over, leaving Wo Fat to glare at him as he waited for him to decide. Normally Con was on Wo Fat's side, so he wasn't sure what had him pausing at that moment.
"Sorry, I liked Ro's plan better," Con said and Wo Fat's eyes narrowed.
He got half of: "Ro's plan?" out of his mouth before Con punched him. Straight to the jaw. It was an instant lights out.

Rowan had been gone a month.
That did not bode well, at all.
Either she got grabbed by her brothers and, because he had yelled at her, she didn't feel like informing him that she was at least okay. Or Wo Fat got her and a body would wash up again. He'd have to be more careful if a body did wash up, because Wo Fat was good at faking her death, but still.
He was hoping it was the first option, not the last one. He really didn't want to find another body.
On that particular day he had been off on a case. They had tied it up earlier than he thought and called his dad to see if he wanted to hang out a bit. Drink some beer, shoot the shit, watch the sun set on their beach.
His dad had been excited for that, had told him to come home, and to bring some of their favourite Indian food. Some Saag Paneer for Steve and Vindaloo for John.
He got home and found that all the lights in the house were off, which made no sense. Yes, his dad was frugal but he always had the lights on enough for Steve to see. Had he gone to sleep and forgotten? No, that wasn't like his dad at all.
He flipped them on and was immediately surprised by what was inside.
For starters, all of their furniture had been moved. The La-Z Boy chairs, the coffee table, all moved to the side. All four kitchen table chairs were in the middle of the room. Only one of them was empty, the rest were all occupied.
His dad was in one, Wo Fat was in another, and in the third was a woman that sort of looked like his mother. But his mother was dead.
All three of them were unconscious.
Steve dropped their food onto the side table and rushed towards his dad.
"How very nice to see you, Steven," a voice said and when Steve turned around to find Rowan leaning against the banister for the stairs, having clearly come from upstairs. "Are you ready for a family reunion?"
Steve glanced back to the three people tied up and then back to her. There was something about her smile that was a little more… pointy then he was used to. It was so similar to the kind of smile that Wo Fat used when he was doing something horrible to Steve, so seeing it on her face did not make him feel good about what was going to happen next.
"What have you done?" he asked.
"No one would listen... now… none of you are going to have a choice."
What the hell did that even mean?
But before he could ask her, before he could get anything else out of his face, someone hit him with a tazer and just like that he was down for the count.
