PERCY POV:
Working at the marine biology research center was a dream job.
Everyone was super nice, and I was doing what I loved. Beckendorf had become a mentor for me, showing me around.
Amphitrite wasn't sure about me at first, but we got along. And the cook at the cafeteria downstairs, Tyson, had made me a friendship bracelet and declared us brothers.
It was nice to know Calypso was next door. Seeing a familiar face was nice.
We ate lunch together most of the time, with Tyson sometimes joining us.
Life was good.
With Annabeth especially.
She might've been even more excited than I was for my promotion, and we found times for dates whenever we could. She had gotten to know Jason more, and I had hung out with Thalia a couple times.
Annabeth and Jason were dubbed the smart blondes, and even thought Piper and I said it playfully as a joke, they accepted it with pride and even made badges.
"Percy! We're putting in the new dolphin installment today, can you help set it up with Beckendorf?"
I glanced over at Amphitrite and grinned. "No problem." The new dolphins were a big edition to the center. Everyone was talking about them.
They were two young bottlenoses, separated from their mother in a hurricane. They were brothers too, named Kai and Cove.
After setting up the installment with Beckendorf and breathing hard from holding up all the heavy glass, I went two floors down to the cafeteria.
"Brother!"
I smiled, turning to Tyson. "Hey, Big Guy." Tyson beamed. "What do you have for us today?"
"I made chicken!"
"Ooh, sounds good. Can you put it on a plate for me?"
Tyson smiled wide, and went off into the kitchen to put together a plate. He always added something blue for me, even if it was something small.
One time he soaked a single french fry in blue food coloring. I wondered what it would be this time. I smiled in anticipation. Tyson loved playing this game.
He came out with green beans, roast chicken and bright blue mashed potatoes set on a white plate.
"Wow! You've outdone yourself, Big Guy. Did you use all of the food coloring?"
Tyson smiled. "I will need to get more tomorrow." I laughed and high fived him, and then brought my plate to my usual table where Calypso was already waiting.
"You're really good with him," she remarked.
I rolled my eyes. "It's hard not to be. He's the best. How's the art today?"
"Good," Calypso replied, taking a bite of her sandwich. "We got a new Charles White piece. You like him," she clarified when she noticed my scrunched expression.
"Cool. Are you gonna put it up front?"
"Oh, yeah. People love Charles White these days. I'm not sure how to design the modern contemporary art section, though. I can never get the measurements right."
I perked up. "You should ask Annabeth to help you. She's great with all those numbers."
Calypso scooched her chair closer to me. "You really love her, huh?"
I smiled, thinking about her golden curls and stormy eyes. "Yeah. I didn't even know what love was until now."
Calypso smiled up at me. "I'm happy for you. I really am."
"Thanks, Cali."
I heard a small, familiar scoff up ahead and looked up to find Annabeth glaring at me.
"Wise Girl? What's wrong?"
She stared at us, glancing between Calypso and I with betrayal in her eyes. Then she took a deep breath, shook her head a little bit like she was trying to shake off her emotions, and then headed back towards the door.
I stood up, frowning. "Beth-"
The door slammed. I glanced around, finding everyone silent and staring at me. I stood up more and my chair slipped back and fell to the floor with a clang.
"I- sorry, Cali, I have to go, sorry!" I gave her an apologetic smile and took off.
I sprinted out the door and wildly spun around, looking for traces of blonde hair on the street. Three blocks down, I spotted Annabeth's wool jacket and ponytail, and headed toward her as fast as I could.
"Annabeth!" I could hear the desperation in my out of breath voice, and kept going.
I kept sprinting, even through a green light, and dodged cars, calling out apologies to angry New Yorkers honking angrily behind me in cabs.
I moved in and out between the crowd of people, barely missing a guy on a bicycle. He yelled out a couple choice words at me, and I ignored him. I was close. I could see her speeding up a little. Was it to get away from me?
"Annabeth!" I knew she could hear me. Why wasn't she stopping? "Annabeth!" I finally caught up to her and grabbed her arm spinning her around and stepping back when I found tears in her eyes.
"What?" Her voice was angry and hurt, and it tore at me.
"What happened back there? Are you okay?"
Annabeth forced a smiled and pulling up her cheeks meant a couple of tears falling, which she quickly swiped away. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. What's up?"
I frowned. "What do you mean, 'what's up?' You're crying and you just ran out of the marine center cafeteria."
Annabeth shook her head and gave me an unsteady smile.
"I'm not crying," she said in a shaky, watery voice. "And I am fine. You should go back to work. And Calypso."
I stared at her, confused. "What does Calypso have to do with this?"
Annabeth laughed sarcastically and turned away. I took her hand. "Please, talk to me. What the hell is going on right now?"
"Nothing," Annabeth replied stubbornly. "Absolutely nothing. I should get going, bye."
"Don't run from me, Beth. Don't hide from me. What just happened?" Nothing was making sense right now, and Annabeth lying wasn't helping my confusion.
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. "Let me go, Percy. We can talk about it later, I guess."
I nodded, dropping her hand as a knife cut through my heart. Why was she crying?
Why was she lying to me?
And what did Calypso have to do with it?
