"It's obvious that the clue fire could only mean one thing!" The Streak reported to Hal and Clark, who were a part of his team, "They plan to steal the fabled flame of Rasputin. A precious ruby necklace that's on loan to the museum."
"Yeah… obviously." Hal smirked, "It's a good thing you know what you're talking about."
They arrived at the museum, just in time to see a man dressed as a magician leaving the building.
"Hold! This time we've caught you red-handed!"
"Indeed?" The magician smirked, "I've got one more trick up my sleeve."
…..
Hawkgirl, Green Guardsman and J'onn chased after the Music Master who was flying away in an old biplane.
"Yes!" The Green Guardsman cried out, "My hunch about the air crime was dead on! Music Master was after that priceless antique flyer!"
"I'll stop him!"
Hawkgirl flew under the plane, appearing in front of him and moving to force him into an early landing, only to fly into a giant green catcher's mitt.
"What are you doing?!"
"We can't destroy that plane! It's a priceless piece of our city's aviation history!"
"Then how do you propose we stop him?!"
"By using our wits!"
Hawkgirl looked over at J'onn, who gave her a sympathetic look.
….
In the centre of the city, the mayor was cutting the ribbon on a new fountain, announcing it as a tribute to the work he'd dedicated to the city.
It was no surprise that was the target for the water themed crime.
"I'll just leave with my CHILL-gotten gains!" Chuckled the Captain Cold wannabe, as Barry sped towards him.
"Chill out man!" He wisecracked, before kicking the villain in the face, sending him flying backwards, "We're putting you on ice!"
Years of pun battles with Captain Cold had prepared him for this moment.
"Forgive me if I give you the cold shoulder!"
Ice shards fired out at them, forcing him and Black Siren to dodge, Diana easily deflecting them away.
…..
"Stay still, blast you!"
Superman, Hal and Streak easily managed to dodge the blasts, with Superman and Hal firing back.
"Exit stage left!"
Firing off a few more blasts to distract the faster members of the team, the Magician headed over to a nearby phone box, entering it and vanishing in a cloud of smoke.
"What?!" Hal wrenched the door open to have a closer look, "Oh come on!"
"It's a pity he uses his powers for evil, instead of entertaining children at birthday parties."
…
"Holy Hijacking Catman!"
Batman felt like he was going to scream.
They shouldn't be taking the kid with them, definitely not this one…. There was something off about this whole situation.
As the bike sped after the truck, Catman looked over at Ray. "Hang on!" He pushed the bike to its limit, before letting go of the handlebars, preparing to jump onto the top of the trunk.
"Take control!"
For a moment, Batman assumed the other hero was speaking to him, only to see Ray press a button in the sidecar, his own handlebars appearing.
Huh… maybe a sidekick would come in useful.
Perched on the back of the bike, he was easily able to duck as badminton style shuttlecock explosives flew overhead. Catman wasn't as lucky though, one of the explosions happening too close to him as he rolled off the back of the truck, to the front of it, using his claws to cling onto the bonnet.
…
"Go left. Me and J'onn will cut him off."
The Green Guardsman frowned, "Don't forget about the plane!"
"Don't worry, I'll be gentle."
They split off into different directions, flying around the buildings, before reappearing in front of the plane.
The Green Guardsman attempt to catch it, missed.
Hawkgirl and J'onn missed as well, but gave chase immediately, the plane hitting a window cleaning scaffold in its attempt to flee.
"Steady the scaffold! J'onn and I will get the plane!"
"I can't! My ring doesn't work on aluminium!"
"Terrific! J'onn!"
"I will help them."
The Green Guardsman lingered behind as Hawkgirl gave chase. They were over a graveyard when the Music Master used his accordion to send blasts at her, sending her crashing to the ground.
….
"You can't stop my killing chill!"
"I'm just getting warmed up!"
Diana chuckled fondly, backflipping away from another blast. Barry was having far too much fun with this. She watched as Barry ran circles around the villain, removing the dentist-like headband that was the source of his powers.
"Like I said…" Barry smirked, "… You never had a snowball's chance in he- "
He was interrupted by the beeping of a truck.
"Look!"
Diana and Barry turned, to see a TNT truck heading straight for a buss full of nuns.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me!"
Knowing that Diana and Black Siren could handle the villain, Barry sped after the trunk, climbing into the driver's seat (which was suspiciously empty) and swerving it out of the way of the bus... so that he was heading straight for a building.
And the brakes weren't working.
"Come on! Come on!" He pressed down on them harder, as though that would help.
Unsurprisingly, it didn't.
Desperately, Barry jumped out, just before the truck hit the building.
BOOM!
"FLASH!"
Diana rushed over to her friend, Black Siren following on behind.
"Out cold, eh?" The villain took his headband back, picking it up from where Barry had dropped it, freezing the three in place before they could react, "It seems I've captured the greatest prize of all."
….
Catman was starting to slide under the truck as it sped up, only to be saved when Batman jumped to the top of the truck, using a hook to pull him up to safety. Together, they jumped back onto the bike.
"Thank you."
Batman just glared at him.
He had claws. Why didn't he use them when he was on the top?
Amateurs.
Especially as the kid had slowed down, so now the truck was getting away.
"What are you doing?!"
"I wanted to make sure you'd both make the jump!"
Forget it.
Sidekicks were more hassle than they were worth.
….
The Green Guardsman's eyes widened in alarm as J'onn fell to the ground, screaming in pain as he clutched at his head.
"J'ONN!"
"Nothing…" J'onn's eyes were wide, staring off at nothing, "… there was nothing. It's gone, it's all gone."
….
Hawkgirl groaned, pushing herself to her feet, cursing when she saw no sign of the plane.
"Lost them."
And then she looked over to her right, frowning when she saw a familiar name on a grave.
"Here lies Scott Mason… the Green Guardsman?"
