Scene 8: Military Mess (Part 1)

Night had fallen over the harsh tundra-like landscape of the South Town's mountain region by the time Team Ikari and Team Metal Slug had arrived. Their helicopter lands on a solid patch of dry land not bitten by the frozen ice and snow. It was near pitch dark as the winds whistled through the silent surroundings, save for the rapid flashing of hazard lights dotting the facility known as Mephistopheles's Headquarters.

"Damn its cold out here!" was the first thing out of Ralf's mouth after taking one step outside of their chopper.

"It could be a lot worse if we were here during the heart of winter…" Clark states, seemingly not phased at all by the subzero temperatures.

"So I guess we need to find a way inside the complex?" Tarma asks as he peeked his head out the door.

"Yeah, because there is no way in hell I'm going to have us gather intel for Commander Heidern out here in this snowstorm," Ralf replied. "So, everyone, get your weapons and accessories ready and let's get this show on the road!"

Promptly taking the initiative to get themselves prepared on their leader's orders, the rest of the team equips their personalized items, along with some specially designed black wetsuits and matching skullcaps and boots for stealth purposes.

"Guys, there's one tiny problem with these outfits…" Fio comments as she and most of the others struggle to get theirs on.

"Yeah...they're about two-sizes too small on us!" Leona says in between grunts while trying to force hers on.

"Don't know what you guys are talking about, mine fits just fine," Marco responds with a hint of trolling in his response. This was the obvious truth, however, as his suit fitted him just fine.

Lucky bastard.

"Okay, let's start making our way toward the facility. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious on the way, and if anyone stops us, kick their ass!" Ralf instructs his team before starting their mission.

The rhythmic sound of boots crunching on the snowy ground broke the intermittent sound of the biting wind as both teams trekked across the field in a single file line. Nearing the vicinity of the complex, they stop abruptly when a well-hidden watch tower suddenly shines its spotlight mere feet from their current positions. They veer to the side in response to avoid being detected, moving directly underneath the tower to plan their next move.

"So, this could be a potential problem," Tarma states, lowering his voice.

"We'll just need to take out the guards and then we'll be able to move on undetected," Leona says.

"So, who's going up there to do the deed?" Ralf asks his team.

Before a volunteer could step forward, the door at the top of the tower opens, and out steps the guard on duty taking a smoke break.

"Let me handle this," Clark states, reaching into his accessory pouch to get something of use against the guard above…

WHACK!

...when a loud sudden crack broke through the air, followed by the guard falling over the railing and landing on the ground unconscious in front of them with a thud.

Staring at the body for a moment wondering what just happened, they turn to Marco, who juggled a couple of stones in his hand.

"...Marco, did you just throw a stone at that guard just now?" Fio asks.

"I sure the hell did. Guess that guy wasn't much of a 'rock' fan," Marco responds with an amused shrug.

With the first line of defense disabled, the team resumes their advance upon the entrance of the facility. After arriving, they took note of the metallic pylons and vertical pillars circling the entrance of what appeared to be a large rocky structure that descended underground. To their left was a moderately-sized air duct, and to their right were mine carts that sat outside of the shaft entrance.

"Here's the deal. Clark, Leona and I will sneak in through the air duct, while Fio, Marco, and Tarma enter into the shaft. Put your walkie-talkies on vibrate. If something happens, we all have each other's numbers for emergency contact purposes. We'll meet back here in an hour. Move out!" Ralf instructs, the team splitting to two separate groups as they commence the infiltration of the complex.
