A/N: Okay so this story I didn't know where I was taking it really so I want to thank my friend Haley that helped me brainstorm for this chapter. Thanks for the support the first chapter has gotten.

The restaurant was full, and Kim offered a game of twenty questions to get to know each other. Adam had her laughing so hard her sides hurt by question five.

"I haven't laughed like this in a long while. Thanks for tonight even if I'm not the one you were expecting to spend it with."

"You are better than the alternative, I promise." He smiled at her.

"Let me guess, third wheel?"

"Although she claimed that it was just a few drinks and a game on the big screen."

"She has a very good persuasion game." She agreed.

"That she does. What excuse did she give you?"

"Girl's night out, claiming the need to take my mind off stuff."

"Do you mind me asking what stuff?"

"Cheating asshole ex-boyfriend." She huffed and rolled her eyes.

"Looks like we have more in common than you think." He took the last pull of his beer and flagged their waiter for another one. "I'm glad she set us up together."

"Listen Adam, you are a great guy, and as good as Hailey's intentions were about tonight, I'm not looking to start anything new with anyone."

"I'm not looking to start anything either, but that doesn't mean that we can't be friends Kim." He leaned into his elbows that were sitting on the table. "Unless making new friends isn't part of your plan either?" He winked.

"I can do friends." She agreed with a laugh. "So, where were we?"

"I was telling you about the time I went undercover with Detective Olinsky as a homeless man."

"Was he really smelling that bad?" She laughed.

"Yeah, it was disgusting as hell." He assures her. "Now come on, you must have some pretty funny stories too."

"Apart from getting lazy idiots for partners lately, nothing really interesting. It was way better when Hailey was still my partner. At least I knew someone had my back." She emptied her beer.

"You'll find another good one."

"Not if my front desk Sargent has anything to say about it." She rolled her eyes. "He doesn't exactly like me and he's doing it on purpose to give me the worst partners."

"Did you ever report him for it?"

"No because I know that he'll make my life even more miserable, so I just do the job and hope to god that I don't get killed." She shrugged.

"Adam?" He didn't think he would hear that voice ever again, or see her, but there was no mistaking it.

"Emily, Justin." He said between clenched teeth with a face smile plastered on his face.

"Small world huh?" Justin said.

Kim could feel the tension in the air around them. She didn't know what it was, but the three of them knew each other closely and she could see the tension in Adam's whole body.

"Not small enough." Adam spat, forgetting Kim was even there.

"Hi, I'm Kim, Adam's girlfriend." Kim rose to her feet and extended her hand out.

"Girlfriend, oohh." Emily said sweetly. "It's really nice to meet you." She shook Kim's hand, but Kim kept it in hers a bit longer.

"I'm sure." Kim felt like she could murder them both for some reason. "We won't keep you any longer, we were just about to get out of here, right baby?" Kim cooed at Adam.

"That's right." He stood, keeping his eyes on Kim and sending her a smile of gratitude. "We better go before we're late meeting with Jay and Hailey." He wrapped an arm around Kim's waist

"It was nice meeting you both." Kim smiled before Adam guided her away. Adam insisted on paying before they got out in the cool Chicago air. "You can breathe now Adam." She whispered after they walked a few restaurants out.

"I'm sorry about that." He breathed out. "Never expected to cross paths with them ever again."

"I know you don't want to talk about it, but would you be interested in something a bit stronger at my place, if that's okay with you?"

"Inviting me over after just one date? You surprise me Kim Burgess." He chuckled.

"I figured that you could use a friend right now." She smiled at him.

"I would love that." She gave him her address and drove herself home. "Nice place you've got here."

"It's nothing much on my cop salary, but it does the job." She shrugged, pulling a bottle of Bourbon.

"I'm really sorry about what happened at the restaurant." He took the glass that she offered him. "I didn't mean to put you in the middle of it."

"It's fine Adam." She chuckled. "I just feel like there's a story behind that though." She sat on her couch and pulled her legs to her chest.

"You remember the cheating ex?" Kim nodded. "That was her, and who I thought was my best friend." Now she knew why her feeling of wanting to kill them both had gone through her chest.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Adam."

"It took me a long time to get over it, it still hurts, still makes me angry."

"I was angry too." She confessed. "I don't know you all that much Adam, but I do know that you don't deserve whatever she did to you."

"She left me at the altar." He downed his drink in one go. "He was supposed to be my best man."

"Bitch." She snarled.

"Down darlin'." He chuckled. "It's not right to be jealous of your boyfriend's ex." He teased, getting up to bour himself a second glass from the bottle Kim had left on her counter.

"Not funny Adam."

"I know, but it's okay, you don't have to be angry on my behalf Kim."

"What if I want to be angry on your behalf?"

"Then I will do everything in my power never to be on your bad side."

"Wise choice." She chuckled. They talked a bit more before Adam stood.

"I think I need to call it a night, it's been a long day."

"Does a friend ask for a number after a first date?" She questioned as she walked him to the door.

"What guy doesn't give a girl who pretended to be his girlfriend on a first date his number?" She questioned her with a smile. He pulled his hand out of his pocket and motioned for her to give him her phone. "Call me after Hailey hounds you for details." He smiled.

"Will do." She smiled back at him.

"Good night, Kim." He leaned in and kissed her cheek.

"Night Adam." She blushed. She closed the door behind him and poured herself another glass that she downed quickly before brushing her teeth and heading to bed. She knew Hailey would be on her in a second the next morning and she needed as much sleep as she could.

Kim groaned at the insistent knocking on her front door. Looking at her alarm, she noticed the ungodly hour considering she was off today. She flipped her pillow over her head and willed her old partner to go away so she could go back to sleep even if she knew it was unrealistic.

"Come on Burgess, I know you're in there."

"Pretend for a second that I'm not." She grumbled as she opened the door. "I'm going back to sleep." She waved her off.

"Oh no you're not." She pulled her by the arm and sat her down on one of her kitchen stools. "Tell me how your date went with Adam last night." She went straight to the point.

"First of all, Hailey, you can't force two people to spend some time together, second, we had fun until she showed up." She rolled her eyes as Hailey slipped a cup of coffee from their favourite shop in front of her.

"She? Oh my God Kim, what happened?"

"Are you familiar with a bitch called Emily and her ass of a boyfriend Justin?" She placed her elbows on her island and looked Hailey dead in the eye.

"Ouch." She winced. "I've never met her, but I know the story."

"Well, she was there with him and let's just say that it was tense, and I might have pretended to be Adam's girlfriend."

"OH MY GOD!" She squealed. "Tell me EVERYTHING."

"There's nothing much to tell." She shrugged. "As soon as he heard her voice, he became stiff, and I could feel anger bubbling at the surface, so I just had to get him out of there." She wrapped both hands around her cup and took a sip. "I asked him to come over for a drink, take the edge off and we just talked."

"Nothing happened?"

"Just a kiss on the cheek and promise to hang out again."

"I knew it." She had a grin plastered on her face. "I knew the two of you would kick it off together, I told Jay as much."

"Jay knows about this?" Kim gasped.

"Kind of, but he wasn't on board really, told me to butt out."

"And he was right Hailey. You can't just hook two people up just to see how it goes."

"That's not what I did Kim. I know the two of you have struggled and I just thought it would be good for the two of you to just think of other stuff for a little while."

"I know you have good intentions Hailey and Adam is a great guy, but I will tell you exactly what I told him. I'm not ready to get back on the horse, or even if I want to for that matter, but I did agree to hang out again in a friend capacity."

"Friend is good Kim." She reached out and placed her hand on top of Kim's. "Connor was an ass for what he did to you, and I just want to see you smile again."

"And I appreciate what you're trying to do Hailey, but I'm just not ready to get my heart stomped on again."

"That's the total opposite of what I want for you Kim. I just don't want you to close your heart off for the right guy when he comes along."

"And I promise that I won't, when I'm ready."

"Alright, that's good enough for me."

"Okay, so now that I'm fully awake with no chance to go back to bed, what do you want to do with our day off?"

"Go get changed, we're going shopping." Kim took fifteen minutes to get ready and the girls were on their way for the day together to catch up properly.
