Carlisle looked into the girl's eyes, they were filled with determination and impatience. He knew that she was serious and she will force him out if he does not speak quickly. He only hoped that she will listen to him. He did not know her story, but he could only guess the anguish and anger she has felt surrounding Aro and he did not blame her. Aro already told him it was his fault, and Carlisle was not going to make excuses for him.
"Well?" The girl said, snapping him from his thoughts. "You now have three minutes, wasting my time is not in your best interest vampire. So I suggest you get to it before I drag you out into the snow."
Carlisle breathed deeply. "My name is Carlisle, in case you were curious. If you remember me telling you that you look like someone that I know, I was not joking. He is not really a friend however, I just knew him after spending time with his coven for a small portion of my life."
"Why do you bring this up again?" Saphira questioned, she was curious to know about her father despite that her patience was thin.
"His name is Aro, and he has quite the story to tell. I feel like I am going to go out on a limb on this, so please bear with me. I know I only have a short time, but I will be as quick as I can. It was a mistake that I even was told about it, but Aro told me he had a child once. He was in an empty, cold room with only a single candle lit and he seemed so sad and regretful when I saw him." Saphira almost wanted to scoff, she did not believe he regretted anything given the many attempts she has had trying to reach out to him. But she did know she did not know what he really felt behind his castle walls. "I was not even going to linger in the room, but Aro invited me in and told me something of his past that none of the Volturi know about. He told me he had a daughter, and I don't just mean that he impregnated someone. But he carried and gave birth to a child that he remembers as very special. He told me he was transformed on her tenth birthday, and he left her. He did it out of cowardice and fear of harming her, but the regret came later. He told me she might be immortal because the circumstances of her birth made her special. And the fact that you look very similar to him, makes me think you could be his daughter."
Saphira was silent, she had to process everything he was telling her. She did not detect any deception from Carlisle, and she hoped what he said was true from her father. If he really did regret leaving her, it made her confused as to why he did not respond to her attempts of reaching out to him. She breathed deeply and bit her lip for a moment. "I am very intrigued by your story, but what makes you think I am a daughter of that vampire? Aside from my appearance, what other reasons might you find that would align me to him?"
Carlisle was caught off guard by the question and he had to think. Aro did tell him about one detail about his daughter and he had to think on it for a couple minutes. "His daughter had a special birth mark on the back of her right hand. It first looked like a normal, egg-shaped mark, but it changed when she was month old, as if the egg had hatched and a serpent-like creature came out of it. He described it like the celestial dragons of China and it grew up the right arm, coiling it's tail around her." His eyes fell upon her right arm, it was covered by the same black cloak she had worn the day they first met. "I see your arm is covered. If you have no mark, then you are not his daughter."
Saphira hesitated, she wanted to trust Carlisle, but her trust had been broken in the dust for so long. She has never been able to repair it. She did consider that perhaps it was time to fix some things she was feeling, but she knew if things do not work out, she was done. Sighing deeply, Saphira pulled the cloak away from her arm, and there it was. The vampire gasped; the black celestial dragon birth mark was completely coiled around her arm up to her shoulder. Her stern expression softened, and her eyes watered with tears threatening to well in them. "What are you doing here Carlisle? You do not need to do anything for him."
He blinked and shook his head. "No, I am not actually. I can see from your eyes that things had not been so good for you since he abandoned you. I am not here to make excuses for Aro, that is his job honestly. And I doubt any of them are good, and you probably already know that."
"I am trying to understand how he even regrets anything when he never allowed me back in," Saphira said, surprising the vampire at her statement. "I am not even sure if he recognized me or simply ignored that I could be there. If what you were told from him to be true, he should know that I would try to reach out to him. I have tried so many times, and the last time was five hundred years ago and I gave up! I am tired, and I focused of ridding the world of people who wished harm to me and the world itself. That fight ended a hundred years ago and I still am not over that pain."
Saphira did not realize tears had fallen. She wiped them away quickly as she had not meant to rant to the vampire. "I had no idea, I am sorry. I again cannot make excuses for Aro. And I have to be honest, I think he forgot your name. He would not, or could not tell me when I asked him. I do not wish to be impolite, but what is your name?"
"Saphira, that is my name. And I am not angry at you Carlisle, just know that okay. If you want to try to help me, I will allow it. Maybe having others there will make it easier on me and him to reconnect, I do not know." She swallowed as she felt her throat tighten from pain, a reaction she's had as the pain of her past is brought up and making it harder to breath. It was not just panic attacks that made her breathing harder. "Just…be prepared that I will expect it to fail. I have been hurt so many times, and all I wish is that I could die."
Carlisle listened and pondered on her words, the breaking in her voice told him everything he needed to know about her pain. The tears and the broken, defeated expression was another, and he knew this was going to be harder than he first thought. "Well, if Aro does not want you, maybe a surrogate family would be better. I do not want you to go through this life alone. No one deserves that, and I am sorry that Aro could not be part of it. And we will help you through what you need."
"Thank you Carlisle, that means a lot to me," Saphira said, her bottom lip trembled and she tried not to sob in front of him. She breathed deeply, swallowing hard and clenching her eyes shut to stop tears from falling. "I look forward to meeting the rest of your family. And I pledge my protection onto you."
"If you don't mind me asking, why exactly are you immortal?" The vampire asked curiously. "While your birth mark sort of gives me an idea, I just want you to tell me yourself."
Saphira blinked before smirking. The sound of the wind began to pick up around the house, but not violently and she stood up from her chair. "I will show you, follow me."
Carlisle was looking at the window in confusion, the snow was blowing enough that he could not see the trees and yet the house was not shaking. He stood up and followed her to the front door and she opened it, a breeze blew into the house and she was holding her cloak up. "You can control weather?"
"In some aspect, yes," Saphira said with a shrug. "Hold these please, I won't need them." She shoved the into Carlisle's face to cover his eyes briefly.
He frowned and held it, only to realize her nightie was also in his hands. He looked up to respond when he did not see her. Carlisle stepped at the doorway, looking out as he worried that she out in the cold. He continued to look around, squinting his eyes and he heard the sound of something heavy getting closer and closer to the house. The wind and snow was still making it hard to see, but the heavy thumping stopped and Carlisle caught something when he glanced down. A large paw that resembled similarly to the foot of a tyrannosaurus, but with longer, sharper claws and a thumb that allowed the creature to grab onto stuff. The scales on her paw were darker blue on the toes, and paler on the paw itself, but the leg was nearly completely white with a crystallized glimmer on the scales. The claws were a very dark, shiny blue and they were worn, as if they had seen war more than one time. His eyes looked up slowly and the snow parted, the long neck of a dragon stood out and the bright, emerald, green eyes shown through the white. Her horns crowned her head in a twist, jagged shape, they were the same colour as her claws along with the spade shaped spines down her back. Her wings were wide and sharped with a slight transparency through them. The frosty cloud breath flowing from her nostrils told Carlisle that the cold did not bother Saphira at all, in fact she was an ice dragon.
"So it is true, you are a dragon," Carlisle said in disbelief, not even realizing that his mouth was open. "We had assumed you might be one, but it was hard as we had never met a dragon before."
"That is because you never will meet other dragons," Saphira spoke, her voice sounded more majestic and wiser than it had while in her human form. "And a main reason why I do not understand my father's rejection to my attempts to reach out to him. But I suppose seeing is not believing for some."
Carlisle smiled gently at her. "I am glad you are the only one Saphira, and we will keep your secret close to us. I can tell by your claws you have seen war, even after you have told me about the fight you had. I assume there are people out there who seek your blood?"
"I am afraid so," Saphira said with a deep sigh. "I am privileged that I can blend in with humans without drawing attention to myself. But enough of this form, turned around and I will put those back on. The snow will keep my body hidden from you."
Carlisle nodded and turned back, stretching his arm back to allow her to take the clothes. "A frost dragon huh? I knew that dragons could enjoy the snow, but everyone believes dragons breath fire."
"Ice dragon actually, and you are correct about me being able to breath fire," Saphira said gently. He felt her take her clothes from his fingers, but Carlisle did not dare to look behind him. "I cannot just transform into a single dragon Carlisle. I can control nature's elements, and they stem from those breeds in which I can transform into. You may turn around." Carlisle turned slowly as the snow and wind died down to only a gentle flutter of snow falling to the ground. "Earth, fire, water, wind, ice, lightning and nature are the dragons I can transform into, along with more magical elements of cold fire, shadow, aurora, crystal, rainbow and, like the dragon upon my arm, celestial dragon. I earned these dragons through trials and pain throughout my life, the first being fire after my father's abandonment left me with scars that still burn today."
Carlisle was not expecting to hear this revelation from Saphira. She could transform into thirteen dragon breeds, and he did not even know if could earn more. "When you say earned, what does that mean? Were you not always able to transform into them?"
"They were in my blood but receiving all that power at once would destroy someone even if they are good," Saphira explained. "It is not the same as those wolves you have made a truce with. There are two more that are still hidden, I do not think I will ever see those. Love and light, I am sure they will come should I find happiness and love if it is the quest to complete."
"I suppose the saying that great power comes with great responsibility is true for you," Carlisle said with a smile. "I am pleased that we were able to talk. I know we might not yet be friends, but I hope we can be and perhaps family."
Saphira nods slowly, glancing away for a moment. She knew that the Cullens could be killed by the newborns if they have to fight with them. But she knew it was not her fight, she did plan to go down there to give the Volturi a peak. "And for your sake, I hope you train enough to kill those newborn vampires."
"And we will," Carlisle said with confidence. "I do not expect your help at all Saphira, but I do believe we are your best chance at getting your father back. Other vampires would try to drink your blood and condemn you to looking like Aro."
"This is true, I will be watching from afar." Saphira walked past the vampire towards her front door. "You should leave now. Do not come here again, I will come to you. That is the only thing I ask, I hate being disturbed like this morning."
Carlisle was surprised that Saphira still wanted to be isolated, even if she would reach out to him when she was ready. But she had her reasons, and the pain he saw from her was enough to make him understand she needed her space. He might not be a therapist, but he wanted to try and be one for her to help her.
"I look forward to our next meeting, have a good day Saphira," Carlisle said, bowing respectfully to her.
Saphira nearly sneered at him, she hated people bowing to her. She was no king or queen, yes she was a leader in fights, but she hated people bowing to her. Especially when they know that she is a dragon. She did not desire that kind of power, her only desire was love and family. She stopped at her front door to look back to see Carlisle had gone. She gripped the archway and felt her anxiety sweep over her again. Such nice words from Carlisle, but she felt she needed more time before agreeing to any kind of plan they might have to help her.
