Author's Note:

This chapter includes the canonical (ish, I add to it a bit) non-con that Damon did when he compelled Caroline in Season 1.

Autumn 2009

"His name is Stefan Salvatore, he's from Mystic Falls but hasn't returned since he was young, and there's some sort of family drama."

"You found all of that out in half a day?"

"Elena, you sound shocked."

"Well, if there's one thing you're good at, I guess it would be gossip."

"You're friends with Elena, aren't you?" a man asked her shortly after Stefan ignored her introductions.

"I don't believe we've met before."

"You're right, but I think you've met my brother, Stefan?"

"It seems that neither of you knows how to properly introduce yourselves. Caroline Forbes."

"Damon Salvatore. You're not what I was expecting."

"And what were you expecting?"

"Oh, you know all of those stereotypes about blondes, I'm sure. But you, you seem like someone worth getting to know."

"I don't date."

"What?"

"You seemed to be veering towards flirting, I just wanted to let you know. And the fact that you're like ten years older than me should have put you off initially, but in case that didn't..."

"Maybe you just haven't met the right guy yet?"

"And you are that guy?" she laughed. "I doubt it."

"Alright. At least let me walk you to your car?"

"Oh, I'm fine. I don't drive, it's not a far walk from here."

"I'll go with you, all of those animal attacks, you'll be safer with another person. I won't try anything untoward. Trust me," with a hint of compulsion.

"I guess it couldn't hurt to walk with someone else."

"Good choice, Barbie."

"It's Caroline."

"Of course, Caroline."

They walked away from the gathering, but halfway to her house Damon held her back.

"You are going to ask to come back to my place. Leave a note for your parents if they would expect that, make it simple. You're my girlfriend now," he compelled.

"Are you going to kill me?"

"Mmhmm."

If it were possible, a sob would have erupted at that, out of relief or terror she wasn't sure.

"What's the point in keeping you around? Want to beg for your life? Make yourself useful to me."

"Um. I know a lot about art and art history. I'm involved in a lot of town events, I plan about half of them."

"Well, seeing as I am a Salvatore, one of the Founding Families, I think human blood bag is the best you have to offer," he stated before biting into her flesh.

"Please, no."

"Unless I ask you a question, be quiet in my presence," he compelled.

"We're going to the Founder's Party?" she questioned.

"You're getting me into the Founder's Party. Do you not know to hide bite marks? Here, drink this."

She drinks the red liquid in the vial. "What was that?"

"Vampire blood, it'll heal up those bite marks so your stupidity doesn't get me in trouble."

"Why are you dating Caroline?" Elena asked.

"Me?"

"You are dating Caroline, aren't you?"

"Why are you opposed?"

"You don't seem like you would work well together. She's a control freak, and you need to be able to 'save' someone. Doesn't seem to fit."

"Well, our relationship has gotten me closer to you. Do you think our personalities fit?"

"I could be partial to some saving."

"Elena! Damon? What are you doing here? Aren't you here with Caroline?" Stefan interrupted.

"Do you have a problem with me speaking with Elena? She approached me, so … not my fault there. Being an incredible conversationalist that makes time go by faster than it should have, I'm guilty of that. Can you blame me?"

Autumn 2010

"I don't want my blood anywhere near your mouth, but you need vampire blood to live. Why am I saving you again? Oh, right because Elena asked me to. Good thing hospitals have syringes. Don't die, I can't imagine what you would be like as a vampire."

"Elena?" Caroline asked Katerina.

"Not quite, you can ask one of the Salvatores about who I am later. But first, you don't quite fit as a human. I am sorry about this," she concluded with a tone that she didn't know if it was sincere or not.

"Caroline!?" Bonnie shouted at her friend.

"Yes?" she smiled brightly.

"You were feeding off of him? An innocent man?! Feeding! How long have you been a monster, Caroline?"

"Um. I've been a vampire for about ten hours?"

"You're a vampire?" Elena joined the conversation.

"Yes. I was killed this morning."

"Bonnie, she'll need a daylight ring."

"Maybe she shouldn't have one, she nearly killed a man when I walked up. I'm not friends with monsters." Bonnie stormed off.

"Maybe another witch could make you one?"

"There aren't any other witches in town."

"And? Oh, come on, Care. Everyone knows the 'I can't leave town' thing is one of your desperate attention-seeking plots. Let me know how it goes." Despite her harsh words, her tone was kind if not placating.

"I guess it's time to try leaving town again," she muttered to herself before checking if her mom had returned home.

"Mom! Are you home yet?" She heard no response. Before she could leave she noticed the light on in her bedroom. A small envelope was on her bed. She carefully opened it to reveal a note and a daylight ring, a gorgeous daylight ring. As if she had crafted it, not that she could craft jewelry, but it was perfect.

"I think you'll be needing this."

"Who sent me a daylight ring?" she whispered to herself. "Well, no need to leave now. Thank you, whoever sent me this. Wait, could it be cursed? Would someone go to the effort to curse jewelry for me? I doubt it. Just put it on, Caroline."

"So, what happened to Carolyna?"

"What are you doing here, Katerina?"

"Well, she didn't recognize me. Can't exactly blame her for that one as she's seen two other people who look exactly the same. But, she was bascally human, and that means something happened."

"Why are you here? Shouldn't you be on the run?"

"Touchy subject, it is Carolyna so I shouldn't expect anything different. You wouldn't kill me now, I can be useful to you and Carolyna wouldn't appreciate it."

"How could you be useful to me?" Klaus asked.

"Tell me what happened and I can tailor my abilities to the part. And the fact that if you kill me, you lose another dopplegänger."

"It was a curse, about a decade ago. Her memories and powers were pulled away from her."

"Could she die from a wooden stake?"

"Her immortality has not changed, only her everyday access to her powers. And don't think I don't know that you turned her."

"How many spies do you have on her?"

"She doesn't require spies, Katerina."

"But you do."

"I am capable of protecting myself."

"That's not what I meant, and you know it. What's the plan? I mean, a decade? You must have at least one plan?"

"Katerina, what are you doing here?"

"Oh, you know Elijah, just talking to Klaus inquiring about Carolyna. I just saw her in Mystic Falls and was hurt she didn't recognize me."

"Ah, and has my brother explained what happened?"

"Not adequately."

"Hmm. Her personality remains, her intelligence, but her memories and vampiric abilities have been placed in a deeper level of her consciousness than she can access. To break this, she must fall in love with my brother."

"Wow, those were some smart witches, too bad they all suffered a terrible death I'm sure."

"It's not impossible to fall in love with me," Klaus defended.

"It'll be hard."

"Caroline did before."

"Yes, when you had killed how many people? Oh, wait, zero. You know her, it'll be possible, if only because of the inner Carolyna, or Kára I suppose, but it's going to talk longer than you think it's going to. You know some detail of what's going on in her life, but do you know about her tumultuous dating life."

"Katerina."

"Ahh, you shielded it from him, did you? That was either a really wise move, or one of the worst things you've ever done."

"What are you talking about?"

"I really should be going."

"What have you kept from me?" Klaus addressed Elijah, in a silent fury that worried Elijah.

"I believe it is something you should hear from Kára herself. I should also be going."

"You're pulling a Katerina? Really, brother?"

"Go away, Stefan."

"Come on, Caroline."

"I don't really want the 'So you're a vampire speech.'"

"I don't want you to become what I did."
"I haven't. And I don't really want to see any Salvatores right now."

"What did I do?"

"You knew. You put vervain in me and counted on him drinking from me. You used me, now please leave."

"If that's what you want."
