"How is she today?"
Santana jumped and turned to look at Brittany who was looking at her with concern in her eyes. "Wear a bell," Santana snipes at her before looking back at one of her abuela's magical books. If she had paid more attention growing up, if she had wanted to learn maybe she would have been better at it. "Nothing has changed. I managed to stop the bleeding, and while I was there, I did a full body scan, to make sure I didn't miss anything. I fixed what I could, but they did a number on her growing up."
Brittany nodded, "I might be able to get a read on her now, if there are things you want to know."
Santana turned to look at Brittany, it was an invasion of privacy to look into someone's past and she couldn't imagine that Charlie's past was pleasant. "No. Charlie will tell us when she's ready, I know you're curious. Fuck I'm curious as well but if she wakes up, we need to talk to her about limits. We knew that this was a real possibility but Charlie's magical stores always seemed rather endless. But she had limits and I think this is the very first time she's reached them. It's problematic because Charlie can't tell how much magic she's using to begin with."
Brittany frowned, "I thought Mike—"
"He tried, I tried, but all we've managed to do is find a work around. Clearly, it's not a practical work around," Santana grumbled. Getting Charlie to simply fire off magic as quickly as she can, did control how much magic Charlie used, but she gathered up magic quickly. Which still meant that Charlie was using more magic for simple things, then she should have.
"Have you thought about some sort of a—I don't know limiter? Something she can wear?" Brittany asked. "I mean we'd have to find someone who could create something like that, but I can start asking questions."
"Maybe, but I don't think that's going to be enough. People only generally have one type of magic, Charlie has shown an aptitude for several. Mike thinks that she can learn whatever she sets her mind too, I think he's right. I'm just glad she hasn't tried her hand at healing magic, she might be better at it than I am."
"Charlie would never be able to do what you do, it requires precision, and Charlie is like a bull in a China shop," Brittany said. "I don't think she can learn everything, there has to be some limits, or at the very least things that she can't seem to do. She seems to have no ability for anything mental so I doubt she could do what I do."
"Psychometry is rare," Santana agreed. "So maybe not everything, but things that are clearly geared for combat, the point isn't what Charlie won't be able to do it is that in theory she can." Santana frowned and shook her head. "Start asking around for limiters, if Charlie wakes up, then we'll have a discussion about it."
"It's not a matter of if Santana, you've got to have a bit more faith in your abilities, Charlie will wake up. She used a lot of magic. She's not going to be the only person to do that, she won't be the last person to do that," Brittany said. "They usually wake up—"
"It's been three days," Santana pointed out. "Three whole days. How could I not be worried?" Santana snaps and then runs a hand through her hair shaking her head slightly. "Sorry, sorry. I just—"
"You're worried, that's okay Santana." Brittany said in a soothing tone, she looks up from Santana and looks to see Charlie standing in the doorway rubbing at her eye. Her hair was wild as it normally was, and she looked slightly out of it. A small mischievous smile crosses Brittany's face, and she looks at Santana. "It means that you probably like her."
The emphasis on the word like causes Santana to look back at Brittany, irritation on her features. "She's like ten."
"I am not," Charlie said catching the end of the conversation and frowning before yawning again.
Santana jumped up and turned to look at Charlie, her eyes wide for a moment. "You're okay."
"Sleepy," Charlie mumbled. "And hungry—" Charlie stiffens as Santana enters her personal space and hugs her tightly. It takes her a long moment before she throws an arm around Santana's body in an awkward hug. It lasts a moment before she manages to separate herself from Santana. "Don't touch," she reminded Santana after a moment, as if she had just remembered she didn't like people touching her.
Santana glanced at Brittany who shrugged before sighing, "We need to talk."
"Hungry," Charlie repeated again.
Santana sighed and looked at Brittany, "Can you—"
"I'll bring something from the kitchen," Brittany said with a nod. "Burger and fries?"
"Two burgers and fries," Charlie said, yawning once more as she moved to Santana's vacated seat and sits down.
Santana frowned, "Once again, the bar isn't an all you can eat buffet," she reminds Charlie who flashes her a sleepy smile. She sighs, she'd let it go it had been 3 days since Charlie had eaten last. She wasn't even sure how to bring it up with Charlie. She crosses her arms and sighs. "How do you feel—apart from hungry and tired." When Charlie looks at her, she frowns, "Do you remember what happened?"
Charlie thinks for a moment, and looks up at Santana. "There was a person who had my face!"
Santana winced, she had promised that they would discuss it, but she hadn't expected it to be so soon. "Is that all you remember? I need you to tell me what you remember from that day."
"I followed you—"
"I told you to stay put. I'm actually pretty sure that I said for you to stay put." Santana interrupts, narrowing her eyes slightly. She's rewarded with Charlie smiling, like she was pleased with herself.
"I helped, and I got bored so I decided to follow you to help if you got caught and you did." Charlie responded with a shrug. "They already knew who I was so I didn't need the mask," Charlie muttered to the last part. "But there was someone with my face, we could have been sneaky."
Santana sighed of course Charlie's mind would go back to that, "You said you didn't want to know about your family remember?" When Charlie makes a face and nods, Santana sighs. "You have an identical twin sister Charlie, that's why you look like her."
Charlie stared at her for a moment, "She has my face."
"That's generally what identical means." Santana responded dryly.
"I have a sister?"
"Yes, older by a few minutes if the birth certificate is to be believed." Santana tilts her head when Charlie frowns at this. "You're upset about not being older?"
Charlie shrugged and huffed at this piece of her information.
Santana inhales and shakes her head, "We can go over your family later if you want, but right now I need you to focus on what happened that day. What were you thinking?"
Charlie shrugged, "She was really dangerous."
"Who?" Santana prompts. "Did she have magic?"
Charlie shrugged her shoulders once more, "I don't know who she was, but she didn't have magic but she hit me with a war hammer. It hurt, she also hurt my nose."
"So, you felt threatened and you—?" Charlie frowns at the questions and she sighed. "Charlie, I know you dislike being asked a million questions, but I felt your magic. It was like a beacon. That's why I'm asking you these questions so I know what happened and what you were thinking."
Charlie sighs, "Faster, I thought I needed to be faster," Charlie says as Brittany returns with a bag of food. She grins and moves towards it. "So, I was."
"Faster?"
"Yes," Charlie said with a pleased smile.
Santana glanced at Brittany for a moment, who looked slightly confused. "Charlie when you use magic, do you just sort of think of what you want to do and it happens."
Charlie stuffed some fries into her mouth and gave Santana a look like she was asking a silly question. "Yeah. Most of the time, sometimes I can't do things. Other times I can."
Santana bit her lip, trying to think about it logically. "Have you ever done that sort of thing before? Gone faster?"
"No," Charlie answered with her mouth filled with burger.
"She was under a certain amount of stress, and her adrenaline was pumping throughout her body," Brittany said. "Remember when I twisted my ankle and danced on it anyway? And you got super pissed at me? Maybe it's like that?"
Santana frowned, it would certainly explain some of the findings that she had made. Certainly, why she had slept like she had, now that she thought about it, Charlie had been moving rather sluggishly, "Do you feel okay? By that I mean do you feel like you normally do?"
"I feel tired Santana, and hungry, and my body feels super heavy." Charlie answered wiping the ketchup off her lips.
Santana pulled out a seat and looked at Charlie, "I'm not surprised you feel like shit. When you use that much magic, your body needs time to recuperate. That's why you're hungry right now," Which meant that Charlie would probably eat a thousand dollars worth in food before she was back to normal. "You've been asleep for three days."
Charlie snorted, "No I haven't, I took a nap."
"Charlie. That was three days ago." Brittany said gently. "Mike is working downstairs, it's been three days."
Charlie nearly dropped her burger, and looked at Santana. "What?"
"You drained yourself completely, and you did some massive damage to your body. I did my best to heal what I could, but you can't keep doing this. In fact, I'd say you can't do this ever again, you could have died." Santana said firmly.
"I can't use magic?"
"You can use magic just fine but you need to find your limits Charlie, what you did could have killed you." Santana said. "If you had done that when we had first met, you would have died."
Charlie nodded, "That's never happened before," she says with a shrug.
There was a part of Santana that was about to drop it when she saw the shrug, "No. Charlie. No. You don't get to shrug it off, do you understand what you did?"
"Saved you and Mike." Charlie responded with her mouth full.
Brittany snorted as Santana's eye twitched, "Thank you for that," she said.
"Don't encourage her." She's rewarded for her concern with a small smile from Charlie and she reaches and gently pats Charlie's head, deciding to relent at least for the moment. "I'm glad you're okay though. I was getting worried."
