AMORTENTIA

'Amortentia is the most powerful love potion in the world and can be differentiated by the distinct mother-of-pearl sheen and steam rising from the potion in spirals. It smells different to all people according to what attracts them.'

It was a bright and sunny day. The sun shone brilliantly in the clear blue sky and the inhabitants of Hogwarts were determined to take advantage of the rare occasion by spending all the time they could outside. Some teachers had even taken to teaching outside. This however was not possible for a group of seventh year students who were stuck in the potions classroom in the dungeons.

Professor Slughorn had just informed the group that for today's lesson they would be brewing Amortentia with their partners that he would be assigning. Lily listened intently as he announced the partners Snape with Stevens, Smith with Meadows, and Black with Mckinnon and then finally Potter with Evans.

A few years ago Lily would have thrown a fit at the mere thought of being partners with Potter but things had changed after fifth year he had matured, he no longer hexed people for the fun of it and helped people out and this year he had been named head boy thought she was skeptical at first she couldn't deny that he deserved it. He was a natural leader with an air of confidence around him and people tended to listen to him without much argument. Lily enjoyed working with him and being friends with him so much so that she looked forward to whatever time they spent together. She smiled brightly as James came to join her at her table which he returned with an equally bright smile and they both went to work brewing the potion.

Lily furrowed her brows and looked at the potion with clear confusion. She was sure they had brewed it right the steps had been carried out with absolute accuracy and the potion was the right color and the spiral steam was present but they must have missed something because she for the life of her could not smell anything out of the ordinary. She glanced at James and assumed that his puzzled expression meant that she wasn't the only one facing the problem. James turned to her when he felt her eyes on him "I can't smell a thing" he declared.

"I am 110 percent sure that we brewed it right."

"But there must be something because I can't smell anything"

"Maybe if you hadn't used buckets of conditioner this morning I would be able to smell something" Lily replied anger evident in her tone.

"Well I wouldn't be one to talk considering the amount of rose perfume you are wearing today is giving me an asthma attack."

Unbeknown to them the entire class watched them with a sigh of resignation before turning back to their respective potions the both of them bickering after all was not an uncommon scene. Sirius Black and Marlene Mckinnon watched their best friends with amusement dancing in their eyes and twitching lips. When it was finally too much for them they burst out laughing James and Lily turned to watch the pair. James was the first to speak as Sirius and Marlene gained control of their laughing fit "What's so funny mate?" Sirius smirked and replied "Nothing much just the fact that as Lily flower over here put it about you using buckets of conditioner well that's not possible since you woke up late and didn't have time to shower this morning" Marlene picked up where he left off "And Lily isn't wearing her rose perfume because she ran out of it last week."

Slowly they watched as realization dawned on both of them and Lily turned a shade of red that was brighter than her fiery red hair meanwhile James just stared at Lily with a shocked expression with his jaw hanging open. Their expressions were so comical that Sirius and Marlene burst out laughing again. This time Lily and James ignored them and instead with a silent agreement went back to work they bottled their potion and packed up. Since they were the first to finish their potion Slughorn allowed them to leave early. Later both the Head boy and girl arrived five minutes late to their next class which happened to be transfiguration breathless. When Professor McGonagall questioned about where they were they both turned red and started stuttering something about potions and had to talk and some other things before she finally gave up and told the two to go and settle down. This however did not stop Marlene and Sirius from teasing them. As Lily took hold of James's hand under the table she found that she did not particularly care about what they said.
