Chapter 12
We were all called to the office. We all recieved after school detention. Although between me, Rosie, and Harvey we didn't care. If we were in trouble, we were in trouble together. It was the three of us against the rest of the world. As I sat in the library during detention Harvey and I passed notes back and forth. Rosie sat next to me, Harvey sat behind me; and Carly and Stan sat across from us. Harvey tapped my shoulder to hand me another piece of paper. It read:
"Lola told me Carly bullied her a lot, but stayed friends because she didn't know anyone else on the cheer squad."
I wrote back:
"Poor Lola, I know how she feels. I feel bad that she has to eat lunch by herself for a whole week since we have lunch detention and after school detention."
I slipped the note behind me, and looked at Rosie. She smiled shyly and opened her notebook. With a pink pen she began to write a note that read:
"I'm glad we are all back together again...I don't think I missed anyone as much as you...except for maybe mom."
I nodded and wrote under it:
"Your mom is very proud of you I'm sure...and I missed you too.
Rosie blushed. Harvey tapped my shoulder with the note again. It read:
"Lola understands, I told her to sit with her new friend Danielle, she's not as crude as Carly; and they met a couple of days ago. Dani is new to the squad. Also what are you and Rosie talking about?"
I turned around in my chair and whispered:
"How we missed each other."
Harvey gave a thumbs up and nodded. I looked over at Carly and Stan. He was making paper footballs, and she was just glaring at me. I shrugged and Rosie gently pulled the sleeve of my jacket. She gestured to her notebook. There was note she had written that read:
"Did you and Carly really...do it?"
I almost scoffed and quickly wrote in all caps and circled it:
"NO."
Rosie blushed and nodded.
"Mrs. Mann, how much longer?" Carly raised her hand and blurted out.
"Quiet Carly, you have an hour left...perhaps you should all use this time to focus on your homework." our school librarian Mrs. Mann replied back. Carly folded her arms.
I watched Rosie take out her math book to do her math homework. Harvey reached into his bookbag and opened a random book; just so he could pretend he was doing something. Stan continued making paper footballs. Carly glared at me and opened her math book as well. We all had a set of problems to do. I picked up my backpack to get mine out.
As we sat there in silence, my pump alarm went off. It was pretty loud because the room was so quiet.
"Was that a cell phone?" Mrs. Mann called out.
"Proably and it came from Bryan Mrs. Mann." Carly said with a smile.
"Bryan that's not a cell phone is it?"
"No mam, its just my insulin pump...I need to check it...may I please go to the bathroom?"
"Of course!"
I got up and took my backpack full of my medication with me.
"Bry? You okay?" Harvey asked.
"Yeah...it's probably just low on battery."
Carly raised her hand as I made my way to the door.
"May I go to the bathroom too Mrs. Mann?"
"Sure Carly, just be quick about it."
I entered the bathroom and put my backpack on the sink. I then pulled up my shirt and my under shirt. A message on my pump read:
"Insulin flow blocked. Consider injection and testing keystones. Change reservoir."
I took out my meter and a few test strips. I checked my blood sugar several times as I set up my injection site again. I basically had to take off my pump and redo it.
"Does that hurt when you do that?" came a voice.
"Sometimes..."
I gasped and turned to see Carly in the men's bathroom.
"Carly! What are you doing in here?!"
"I wanted a minute to talk to you alone."
"Sorry I'm not interested in anything you have to say."
"Bryan...you know you enjoyed your time with me."
"When you weren't acting the way you were...sure I guess, but why do you have to be so cold towards me? You even got Stan to try and beat me up. You said I slept with you when I didn't."
"No boy has ever turned me down before."
"Then consider me the first."
"Bryan...seriously, let's be mature about this for a second."
"Mature?! You're the one who acted childish. My dad told me that even if you have respect for girls, you have to have respect for yourself; you don't have any self-respect Carly! You've slept with more guys than you can remember! I came along and I would have treated you nice...in fact I did...I actually cared and made you feel special! I never once forced myself on you, but you forced yourself on me!"
"Bry..."
"And another thing there's always one or two girls like you in every high school. Girls that think they're queen bee and get whatever they want. And when you can't, you lash out. You lie and scheme and sneak around! Your nasty Carly, that's all there is too it! Maybe one day you'll wake up and realize that you've made several mistakes. One day maybe you'll learn something. One day maybe you'll find someone that loves you more than you know and you actually love them back."
She then got in my face.
"And you?! You lied to me, why did you even bother with me if you still liked Rosie?!"
"That was my mistake, I apologized, I owned up to it, if you accept my apology or not remains to be seen. All I can do now is learn from it and move on."
"You are a snake Bryan Jay LeMay! I did love you, I would have given you every part of me! You are going to miss me! You are going to miss our talks. They were real. You are going to miss me in every way a person can be missed!"
As she spoke her words slurred in my head. I began to get dizzy. My blood sugar was dropping.
"Do you hear me?! Our texts, our hugs. Even holding my hand you'll miss! Are you even listening to me?!"
I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a piece of candy. Carly snatched it from my hand.
"Carly don't do this...don't get yourself in anymore trouble than you already are okay? And I'm sorry you can't add me to your list of guys that gave into you, I'm sorry you're a slut."
"Shut up!"
She pushed me. I was so light headed that her simple push actually knocked me down. She then got on top of me.
"Carly! Carly don't be stupid!"
"Stupid?! Me?!" You could have had all this!"
She then touched her breasts.
"You're the one that's stupid!"
She gave a shy smirk.
"Hmm...what's that Bry? Maybe you are still into me..."
"Just because a guy gets an erection doesn't mean anything. I bet that's how you got your way with all those other guys?"
She shook her head in disgust by my truthfully words.
"I hope Rosie breaks your heart."
Carly got up and turned to leave.
"Forget it...she would never do that to me...she's ten times more of a woman than you will ever be."
Carly left crying. I didn't care. I then reached in my pocket for another piece of candy. I sucked on it while I fixed my pump. I felt overly confident. I felt happy. Rosie is a God send. She'll never take advantage of me, and I'll never take advantage of her. I see us living out our days like my parents, and my grandparents. She's my person.
