Valentine's day, the day of love had finally arrived on the USS Enterprise and love was certainly in the air.
Everywhere you looked there were couples, handing each other flowers or chocolates. Along with the odd kiss here and there.
It seemed like everyone was happy, well almost everyone.
There seemed to be one person who was acting as if the holiday didn't even exist and that person was a certain red-haired Engineer.
Lexie was just going about as normal, trying her best not to look at the mass amount of happy couples which walked down the halls, hand in hand.
It wasn't as if Lexie hated the holiday, because she didn't. It was just one that she just never felt the need to celebrate, that's all.
She was working inside one of the Jeffries tubes, when a voice called up to her. "Hello Lex."
"Hello McCoy." The Engineer called back, not bothering to exit the tube. "Happy Valentine's Day."
Lexie just said thanks, which seemed to cause McCoy to become concerned. "You mind coming down here for a sec kid."
Sighing quietly to herself, Lexie placed her tools to one side and crawled her way out of the tube and back into the hall way.
"What's up McCoy?" She asked, "You don't sound happy kid, what's wrong?"
Lexie sighed once more, did she really make it that obvious? "Nothing McCoy."
McCoy folded his arms and stared into her eyes, "Nice try kid, I can smell a lie from a mile away."
Lexie should have known that, there was no lying to the good Doctor. "Is it something to do with Valentine's Day?"
"It's just a day I've never really celebrated, mainly since I've never had anyone to share it with."
McCoy just blinked, "What does that mean?" "Valentine's Day is about love and romance, something I've never experienced before. Not in that kinda sense anyway."
Her reply shocked the Doctor completely, "You mean, you've never been in a relationship?" He asked slowly, trying his best not to sound insensitive.
She just shook her head, "You hit the nail on the head, no one ever looked or felt that way towards me."
Lexie replied sadly, "It's not as if I don't know why…" McCoy tilted his head to one side in confusion.
"What do you mean?"
"No one wants to date a girl with two different coloured eyes, they find it weird and ugly." She said sadly.
McCoy felt his heart sink, he quickly lifted the girls head up so her eyes were staring into his.
"You're eyes are what make you special Lex, they are beautiful just the way they are and no one should think or tell you otherwise."
Lexie forced herself to smile, if she got a dollar for every time someone had told her that since she got on the Enterprise. She would be rich! Very rich!
"Thanks McCoy, believe me when I tell you, I don't hate my eyes but I just wish others wouldn't."
Lexie's voice was muffled since she had reached back into the tube to retrieve her tools.
"Well I better be off, before Scotty starts worrying where the hell I am. See ya around Doc."
Before McCoy could even think of what to say, Lexie had already ran off.
"Man, I hope I didn't upset the kid." He muttered to himself as he walked away.
Lexie had made her way swiftly down to Engineering, she just wanted to report to Scotty and head to to her room.
It didn't take her long to find the Scotsman, since she just followed the sound of angry yelling.
Clearly Keenser was somewhere up high again, which he had a habit of doing and Scotty was yelling for him to get down.
"Hey Scotty, I fixed that wiring." Lexie called as she walked over to the Scotsman. "Thanks lass, that you done for today?"
Lexie nodded, "Sure is, now I can enjoy a nice long sleep." Scotty just looked at her.
But before he could ask if something was wrong, Lexie hurried off.
If Scotty wasn't already concerned, he sure was now.
Lexie kept her head down as she made her way to her quarters, she didn't want to see the countless number of people holding hands or hugging or kissing.
She guessed in a way, she was jealous of others being in love.
It wasn't as if Lexie had never had a crush on someone before, but it wasn't as if she had loads either.
There was only one time when Lexie felt like she was falling for someone, that was back when she was at the Academy.
It was a boy who was older than she was, since Lexie was the youngest person at the Academy during her time there.
But nothing ever happened, mainly since the guy was already dating someone.
Even if he wasn't, Lexie was too shy to even talk to him.
When she walked into her quarters, she was greeted by Delta who was sat on her desk.
His glowing green eyes softly illuminated the walls, "Hi Lexie, everything OK?" He asked sweetly.
Of course Delta would notice something was off, he always did. "I'm just tried Delta, that's all. It's been a long day."
"What's with everyone hugging and kissing? Is it some sort of holiday?" Her robotic friend asked.
He was bound to ask that sooner or later, Lexie had never told him about Valentine's Day.
In the thirteen years that Delta had been around, this was the first time that he was experiencing Valentine's.
Mainly since he stayed in Lexie's room most of the time, to keep himself hidden from others.
How was she going to explain this? Even though Delta could express emotions, Lexie didn't know if he would understand what the holiday meant.
"As a matter of fact Delta, today is a holiday called Valentine's Day." Lexie said as she walked over to her bed.
Delta looked puzzled, "What does that mean?" He asked while jumping off the desk to sit in Lexie's lap.
"On Valentine's Day, people express their love to each other. It's mainly between couples, that's why people are hugging and kissing."
By the look on his face, Delta still didn't completely understand. "So why aren't you celebrating it?" He asked.
"I don't have a boyfriend bud, and besides, it's really doesn't bother me." Lexie replied quickly, too quickly for Delta's liking.
"Sorry Lex, I didn't mean to make ya mad." He muttered.
Lexie quickly picked him up and held him in her hands, "You didn't make me mad Delta, sorry if I made it seem that way."
Delta smiled softly at her, "It's ok Lex, like you said you're just tired." Lexie returned her friends smile, while giving him a 'boop' on the nose.
Lexie had placed Delta back down on her bed and had wandered into the bathroom to change out of her uniform.
When she walked back into the main room, she noticed that Delta was now flying around the room.
"Someone's full of energy." Lexie chuckled to herself as she made her way over to her desk.
Instead of going to sleep, she decided to catch up on some work which she had been putting off.
But as soon as she had sat down, her door buzzed. Strange, Lexie wasn't expecting anyone.
She rose from her desk and went to the door, all the while wondering who it could be.
However when she opened it, there was no one there. The hall was empty, not to mention quiet.
"Funny, maybe my doors on the blink?" Lexie questioned as she turn to head back into the room.
It was then when she noticed something laying on the floor, right outside her door.
She crouched down to take a closer look, it looked like a flower.
Still confused Lexie picked it up to investigate further.
Turned out that it was indeed a flower, a single red rose which was wrapped in clear plastic, held in place by a tiny black bow.
Lexie then noticed something else, laying on the floor next to the flower was a letter.
Even more confused Lexie took the flower and the letter inside, closing her door behind her.
"What ya got there Lex?" Questioned Delta as he watched his creator walk over to her bed.
"I'll be honest Delta, I don't really know. They were just sitting on the floor outside my room, I wonder who put them there?"
Lexie said as she gently placed the rose down on the bed, before turning her attention on the letter.
"Who the hell writes letters anymore?" She thought, it was 2261!
Not to mention it was sealed with a wax stamp, boy who ever wrote this needed a reality check as to what year it is.
Despite the oddness of this all, Lexie slowly removed the wax seal and took out the letter which was concealed inside.
She unfolded it gently, the last thing she wanted was to get a paper cut. Then she read what it said.
"Roses are red, Violets are blue. You're eyes are perfect, just like you. Happy Valentine's Day."
Even though the note was incredibly cheesy, Lexie actually found it kinda sweet.
But it didn't say who it was from, she didn't even recognize the hand writing. But Lexie didn't really mind.
This was her first ever Valentine and even though she had no clue as to who gifted it to her…
That didn't stop it from making her smile.
She placed the rose in a glass with water, until she could find a vase and placed the letter in her desk draw.
Lexie couldn't even guess who had sent her a Valentine, but if she ever did find out who it was.
That would make her day.
