Summary:

Inspiration comes along when required.

"Any progress, Dai?" Susumu met Dai at the stone statue in the Kishi family's yard.

"No. Writing music is a lot harder than reading and playing music."

"It'll come. You'll have the piece ready in time to submit your application! Maybe it's the location. Do you have enough light?"

Light, paper, a soundproof spiritual barrier, and a due date! What didn't he have?

"I've got enough. Just waiting for the inspiration to hit. A word, Susumu. Give me a word, and I'll see if I can't make a melody out of it!"

"A word?"

"Yeah, whatever. It can be anything! Whatever pops into your head!"

"Um, okay. Daring?"

Dai wrote some notes on the staff, listening to them internally since he had no physical instrument out. "Not bad. What else you got?"

"Spooked!"

"Spooked." He filled in more notes like bubbles on a test. "Hey, this is working! Shoot 'em at me! Bonus round, go!"

"Colourful! Dramatic! Competitive!"

"Yes! I've! Cracked it!"

Susumu giggled Dai found the flow after struggling to find the right theme.

"Now what's a strong beat to go with this phrase? Should it be a solo?"

"Love?"

"Love?"

"Yes, love. Don't make it a solo."

Dai noticed the rose bushes behind Susumu. And the sky. The sky was a striking shade of blood orange.

"You were leading up to that on purpose!"

"Oops. Was I, Dai? Heh heh heh…"

Their songs mix. Dai's hands descend on Susumu's sweater, his spiky pink fringe kissing Susumu's honey cowlick. Their noses kissing. Just not their lips.

"You drum up the best ideas in me, Susumu!"
