The day after Jade's birthday was a Monday, and on that Monday the Daily Prophet wrote an article on the Triwizard Tournament champions. This interested everyone but when Draco actually read it aloud for them that morning at breakfast, Jade noticed that it wasn't about the champions. It was mainly a story about Harry. Cedric and Krum only got mentioned and Fleur Delacour was left out entirely.
"'I suppose I get my strength from my parents. I know they'd be very proud of me if they could see me now. Yes, sometimes at night I still cry about them, I'm not ashamed to admit it. I know nothing will hurt me during the tournament, because they're watching over me.' Merlin, really?" Draco groaned.
"That doesn't sound like Harry at all." Jade defended him, she couldn't imagine Harry opening up about his parents with a complete stranger, worse than a complete stranger, a complete stranger who was a reporter who he knew would write everything he said.
"'Harry has at last found love at Hogwarts. His close friend, Colin Creevey,'" Draco continued.
"More evidence that that reporter has no idea what she's talking about." Jade cut him off and got a group of shushes from her friends.
"'Colin Creevey says that Harry is rarely seen out of the company of one Hermione Granger, a stunningly pretty Muggle-born girl who, like Harry, is one of the top students in the school.'"
"I didn't know Potter was dating Granger," Blaise said.
"Stunningly pretty? Her?" Pansy gasped. "Compared to who? I mean if you think Hermione Granger is the best of-" Theo nudged her in the side and then Pansy looked across the table at Jade, who was waiting impatiently for her to finish. "Sorry," Pansy mumbled, obviously still upset.
"Hermione is not dating Harry," Jade told them.
"That's not what Rita Skeeter says." Draco chuckled.
"I don't care what Rita Skeeter says, she's writing lies."
From that moment on for the rest of the week, every class they shared with the Gryffindors was another opportunity to harass Harry about the article.
"Since when have you been one of the top students in the school, Potter? Or is this a school you and Longbottom have set up together?" Draco snickered the first time he saw Harry at the next Care of Magical Creatures lesson. But the Slytherins weren't the only ones giving Harry a hard time, whenever Jade was with Harry and Hermione it seemed someone from Hufflepuff would shout something rude or quote the article at him. Just as she suspected, none of the article had come from Harry's mouth, he was always on edge and it didn't take much to push him over. Hermione had tried to get Ron to talk to Harry and Jade attempted to help Hermione but whenever Jade mentioned Ron, Harry got angry.
"I didn't start this," Harry said stubbornly. "It's his problem."
"You miss him!" Hermione argued. "And I know he misses you-"
"Miss him?" Harry scoffed. "I don't miss him."
"You're a horrible liar, Harry," Jade told him and he looked between the girls before sighing and walking away from them. "Where are you going?" Jade called after him.
"The library." He told them and they followed after him.
"He has to work on his Summoning Charms. He's had a bit of trouble recently." Hermione explained. "He can't seem to hold focus long enough for it to work."
"I wonder why," Jade said quietly.
"If he can't get things worked out with Ronald, his grades are going to suffer."
"You think that's what it is?"
"Positive." They walked behind Harry silently as they entered the library and waited for him at a table until he returned with a book on Summoning Charms. Jade's Summoning Charm was "brilliant" according to Professor Flitwick, but telling them that right now would just irritate Harry further so she kept it to herself.
"What's he doing here?" Jade whispered, pointing over to one of the back corners where Viktor Krum sat alone.
"He's always here." Hermione rolled her eyes. Jade noticed the table next to him was filled with girls, whispering and giggling together as they stole glances of Krum every few seconds. "He's not even good-looking!" She muttered angrily, glaring back at Krum's sharp profile. "They only like him because he's famous! They wouldn't look twice at him if he couldn't do that WonkyFaint thing-"
"Wronski Feint," Harry corrected without looking up from his book.
"You know what I meant."
On the Saturday before the first task, all students in the third year and above were permitted to visit the village of Hogsmeade. The Three Broomsticks was packed and Jade squeezed into one of the few empty booths with her friends. Despite the crowd, the waitress was quick and they ordered a round of butterbeer.
"I don't think I've ever seen it this busy," Theo mentioned as a group of loud adults sat themselves down at the bar. There were many recognizable faces in the sea of people though, Jade noticed Ron sitting with Fred and George at a table near the stairs that led up to a second floor of seating.
"Everyone wants to celebrate the tournament." Blaise offered as an explanation. Madam Rosmerta swept past them quickly to greet the wizards who cheered loudly when she came around to the other side of the bar. There was a barely audible ring of the entrance bell and Jade saw Hermione quietly weave her way through the crowd to a corner table in the back. Jade was surprised she didn't join Ron and the others, she definitely saw them on her way.
"Would you excuse me for a moment?" Jade asked Draco, gesturing for him to let her out of the booth and he looked around to see what could have grabbed her attention before finding Hermione himself. "I just want to talk to her, she's all alone." He sighed, obviously wanting to object, but he slid out to let her through anyway. Jade stumbled out of the way of several people but made it over to Hermione quickly. "Hey." She greeted her and Hermione jumped slightly. "What's up with you?" Jade asked,
"Nothing," Hermione told her, hovering over a notebook filled with writing.
"Can I sit with you?" Jade asked and Hermione nodded. Jade stepped to sit in the chair opposite of her but Hermione quickly stopped her.
"No! Not there." She said, looking around to see if anyone had heard her but no one could be bothered, they were all too busy with their own conversations.
"What's wrong with this seat?" Jade asked and Hermione looked at the seat in question.
"Um…" Hermione looked at the chair with concern.
"Hi, Jade." She heard Harry's voice on her left and she turned to look over her shoulder but he wasn't standing there.
"Harry? Where-" She started and then she realized that Harry was sitting in the chair she had intended to sit on. She stuck her hand out and came in contact with something solid to confirm her suspicions.
"Ow." He muttered.
"Sorry, Harry," Jade told him as she sat in the chair next to Hermione. "Why are you using the cloak?" She asked quietly.
"I'd just prefer it if people didn't stare at me the whole time," Harry told her. "Hermione, when are you going to give up on this S.P.E.W stuff?" Harry went back to what they had been talking about before Jade joined them.
"When house-elves have decent wages and working conditions!" Hermione hissed. "You know, I'm starting to think it's time for more direct action. I wonder how you get into the school kitchens?"
"No idea, ask Fred and George," Harry said, he seemed uninterested and Hermione had lapsed into silence, glancing down at her book that had the current members of Hermione's S.P.E.W club at the top of the page. Jade sat there for a few minutes, about to get up and go back to Pansy and her other friends when Hermione looked up and said,
"Look, it's Hagrid!" Hagrid wasn't hard to spot, even in the large crowd, he towered over everyone. Hagrid was currently talking to someone, leaning against the bar, Jade moved her head to get a better look and then saw it was Professor Moody. They straightened, moved like they were going to leave, but then Moody paused, and his magical eye found them in the back. He tapped Hagrid on the back, muttered something to him, and then the pair of them made their way back across the pub toward Harry and Hermione's table.
"All right, Hermione?" Hagrid asked.
"Hello," Hermione smiled. Professor Moody limped to Jade's side and bent down,
"Nice cloak, Potter." Hermione and Jade shared a look.
"Can your eye, I mean, can you-" Harry stuttered.
"Yeah, it can see through Invisibility Cloaks," Moody said quietly. "And it's come in useful at times, I can tell you." Hagrid then smiled down at the empty seat before leaning over the table and whispering something that neither of the girls nor Moody could hear. Straightening up, Hagrid said loudly,
"Nice ter see yeh girls," Hagrid winked at them and then departed. Moody followed him. Before Jade could ask what Hagrid had told him Harry spoke.
"Why does Hagrid want me to meet him at midnight?"
"Does he?" Hermione asked, looking startled. "I wonder what he's up to? I don't know whether you should go, Harry." She looked around nervously and hissed, "It might make you late for Sirius."
"Sirius?" Jade asked, "What have I missed?"
"Nothing. Sirius just wants to talk to Harry tonight, face to face, and going with Hagrid could make him late." Hermione ended her statement looking pointedly at where Harry was sitting.
"Well, whatever you choose to do, keep me posted," Jade told them both as she rose from her seat. "See you later."
