i. Beginnings & Distorted Inhibition

"Step forward. Can you do it?"

The voice, imperceptible in origin, spoke with an indeterminable tone. It was strange. Sora was aware of this voice's existence, yet any identifiable traits were indiscernible. Its words simply appeared in his mind, and, for some reason or another, Sora felt compelled to listen to it, almost as if he couldn't refuse it even if he wanted to.

Yet, as much as his heart yearned to take that step, terror held Sora back. For as simple a task as this supposedly was, Sora's instinct tried his damndest and forbade him from moving forward. As it turns out, 'stepping forward' is far more arduous than one would initially assume.

There had to be some deeper meaning behind this notion that something in him understood, right? Otherwise, why would he feel fear in the first place?

Was he a coward? Was it simply a matter of overthinking?

Regardless of the truth behind the matter, Sora understood one fact beyond a shadow of a doubt.

He didn't understand himself as much as he thought he did.

As if sensing his inward conclusion and unwillingness to move, the 'world' forced Sora's eyes shut.

{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}

Sora opened his eyes, the humming of the Gummi Ship's engine ringing in his ears. His head rested on the top corner of his seat, and the blinding rays of a nearby planet's sun were a simultaneously welcoming yet overbearing sensation, even as an islander.

His expression was grim. That dream again. Part of him thought they would stop eventually, but they're still going strong even after five years.

What was it, the 200th time he's had that same dream by now? 300th? 400th? He stopped keeping count of it at some point, but it was definitely at least a few hundred.

"Ah, look who's finally awake!"

Sora's eyes widened, his inquisitive thoughts interrupted. He then turned his head in the direction of the jubilant voice. It was Kairi.

"Well, excuse me for resting. It's not my fault you two needed help packing… at 1 in the morning," Sora finished dryly.

"Yeah, yeah, we've been over this. We're oh-so-grateful to you, Sora," Kairi exaggeratedly stated, her voice going higher.

"Heh, yeah, you better be," Sora grinned.

The two of them laughed, resulting in the trio's third member finally speaking with a knowing grin plastered on his face.

"Ordinarily, I'd butt in here and make fun of you guys, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to do so with how…clearly together you two are," Riku grinned, humored by the immediate blush creeping on Kairi's face.

"R-Riku!" Kairi chided, her fists cutely shaking like a kid throwing a tantrum. "I thought you said you'd stop with those jokes!"

Kairi wasn't actually upset or anything. Riku knew that, and, hell, everybody else on the Gummi Ship who was watching came to that same conclusion. Well, almost everyone.

"Yeah, c'mon, Riku," Sora shook his head innocently. "We're heading off to Superbia High now. And you're already a second-year! You know better than that! You gotta stop with the childish jokes, or you're gonna make unnecessary misunderstandings for poor Kairi here!" Sora pointed to the blushing redhead, who slightly pouted at Sora's remark.

"Oh, excuse me. I didn't realize how much you grew up in the span of 12 hours, Sora," Riku jokingly rebuked. "Who is it that still keeps their lamp on when going to bed?"

"R-Riku!" Sora chided, his fists cutely shaking like a kid throwing a tantrum. "I thought you said you'd stop with those jokes!"

Riku rolled his eyes.

"I swear, it's like you two were made for each other," he said under his breath, not desiring to incur any more pouts of rage.

The rest of the Gummi Ship ride was reasonably uneventful and quiet, save for Sora, Riku, and Kairi occasionally discussing the topic of Superbia High.

Sora, having had his rest, was wide awake. He was an islander at heart and used to rural life—a genuine country bumpkin. However, Kairi, the princess of Radiant Garden, and Riku, the now second-year, were used to the hustle and bustle of urban life and would aid Sora in acclimating to it. Still, it wasn't as if he were entirely unused to crowds. Destiny Junior High was a packed, packed place, to say the least.

As nervous as Sora was, he was excited. Almost uncontrollably so, though he learned to reign in it as not to potentially irritate Riku and Kairi as much as he thought he used to.

For as much as Sora loved Destiny Islands, even he wanted a change of pace. The gorgeous scenery loses its luster after a while, especially after 15 years. And, while he's been to other worlds like Radiant Garden and The Land of Departure, those were merely quick visits for the sake of his friends and not much more.

This stay at Superbia High is precisely what he's desired. Not only would he be spending time with Kairi and Riku in a place entirely new to him, but he'd finally pursue his Culinary Arts degree and hopefully make new friends.

Sora's enthusiasm was getting to him, and he smiled, its infectious nature prompting Kairi and Riku to do so for the rest of the trip as well.

Finally, the Gummi Ship was making its landing on the port. And here it was, Superbia High. The Major Proficiency Academy that had an entire world to itself.

Sora and Kairi were in awe, their mouths quite literally agape at the sight before them.

Numerous immense azure buildings were lined up, almost akin to the walls of a fortress, for that was how intimidating the sheer sight was for a first-timer. Sora couldn't even begin to imagine how many stories high these buildings were…

Still, despite how fearful the sight was, the surrounding scenery was anything but. Enormous, well-maintained gardens circled the structures, providing a congenial sense of relief to Sora, realizing that there was at least some nature here. However, he heard rumors of how technologically advanced this place was, and part of him was worried about being too in over his head just from the visuals alone.

And, well, sure, he's seen a few pictures here and there. But he didn't clearly remember them, and he also doubted that mere photos could do the sheer scale of this school any justice.

Granted, it wasn't as if these buildings quite literally covered the planet. That'd be ridiculous. But, Sora wondered why this academy had an entire world to itself. He was sure he was told why by…somebody, but retaining all this information is a lot to ask for a growing boy!

As if the various imposing vertical structures and contrasting gardens weren't enough, the center of what Sora assumed to be the campus was possessed by a dome, the likes of which he's never seen before. It was a lot to take in, and he wasn't sure if he even got to so much as glance at the particulars before Kairi tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hey, Sora, we should probably get going," Kairi pointed to the general direction of the various buildings. "We can take a closer look at the campus after getting settled in."

"A-Ah right, sorry," Sora scratched his head reflexively. "None of this must shock you, huh, Kairi? After all, you've lived in a castle your whole life, so this view must be nothing, right?"

"Well…" Kairi brought her hand to her chin and pondered for a second. "I wouldn't say this is 'nothing' to me. Even I wasn't expecting such…vast accommodations."

"Are you two done being flabbergasted yet?" Riku asked, a coy smile playing on his lips. "It took me a while my first year too, days even, to get the lay of the land here. It's overwhelming, but you'll probably be fine, Kairi. As for you, Sora, well..."

Riku stopped, implying the obvious to Sora, who rolled his eyes.

"Come on; it's just a school. It's not like it's a city or something. I'll be fine!" Sora smiled eagerly.

On the other hand, Riku couldn't help but be moderately concerned over Sora's well-being here. Not for his poor sense of direction, but for… other reasons. He glanced at Kairi, who was swapping her stares between Superbia High and Sora.

Riku wished she and Sora would just get together already. They're practically living examples of romance novel protagonists at this point. That little episode in the Gummi Ship with them getting embarrassed and responding to him in literally identical ways was honestly unreal.

Still, Superbia High was no pleasure cruise. It was the Major Proficiency Academy for a reason. Everyone who enrolled here changed in one way or another. And, in Sora's case, Riku couldn't help but worry over whether he would drift apart from himself and Kairi here and even grow resentful or spiteful.

Sora was a vital source of positivity, but he was just human, like everyone else. And there's only so much a human can take before their mentality alters, for the better or worse.

The origin of concern for Sora was pretty obvious, and he was sure Kairi was already aware, as loathe as she likely was to admit it.

As Riku was in the midst of his thoughts, the formerly devoid campus began gradually filling up with seas of students permeating the gardens and buildings' exteriors. In response, Riku glanced at his GummiPhone, eyes widening once he saw the time.

"Oh crap, time caught up with us," Riku said, Sora and Kairi also now noticing the sudden crowds of seemingly students and staff. "Sorry, I meant to take you two there before the crowds started piling up. But I gotta head to my dorms first."

"Uh, take us where?" Sora tilted his head.

"The Administration Office, Sora," Kairi said patiently. "All new students go there for necessities."

"Ah, right! Well, see ya later, Riku," Sora waved and began walking, with Kairi heading in tow. "We'll try to remember to text you later once we're all settled in."

"Sounds good!" Riku waved back.

Seeing Sora's bright smile set Riku's heart at ease. Sure, Sora would change, but he doubted anyone or anything could change him too much.

"Do you even know where how to get there?" Kairi asked Sora, who was eagerly walking ahead of her, still in awe of campus.

"Oh, uh nah, not really," Sora stopped, his grin spreading to the corners of his face. "And do you?"

"As a matter of fact," Kairi's hand dug into her purse and pulled out a rolled-up piece of paper, "I do!"

Kairi's fingers uncurled the paper, revealing an extensive, easy-to-digest map of the premises.

"I printed out one of these back home. Now, let's see…ah, we're close." Kairi's index finger landed on the map, right where the Administration Office was. It was, give or take, around a five or so minute walk from where they currently stood.

Sora nodded, and the two went on their way to the Office, conversing all the while.

"I honestly still can't believe I got accepted," Sora admitted, his hands resting on the back of his head. Kairi almost stopped walking at his confession but kept going, not wanting to cause a scene in public.

"It's just…wow, you know? Superbia High is a big deal. I was sure I'd end up at Twilig-"

"Sora."

Kairi placed her hand on his shoulder, her voice clear as crystal.

"You deserve to be here as much as anyone else does. You earned it. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

Kairi's expression steeled, and Sora was a bit taken aback by it. He'd only ever see her with that…determined gaze when she was in battle.

"Thanks, Kairi," Sora said, a genuine smile forming. "You always know just what to say to cheer me up."

"O-Oh! No problem, hahaha…." Kairi laughed awkwardly, causing Sora to glance at her questioningly before they resumed their walk to the Office.

{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}

"I can't believe I'm really doing this…." A boy clad in bizarre greenish attire said to himself, his breath running ragged.

"Aqua might actually kill me."

Ventus stared at the immense campus before him, its numerous buildings stopping him in his tracks as much as the onslaught of crowds did.

Hey there, I'm Ventus. But you can call me Ven. Who am I talking to? Don't worry about it. I just have a habit of talking to myself. But, if there is someone out there listening or reading my thoughts, then hey! What's up?

I can't really explain why, but something about today feels like the start of a new book, a brand new story, I guess. So, let me give a rundown.

I'm a Keyblade wielder and trainee under Masters Eraqus and Xehanort. Though I guess Aqua and Terra can also count as my Masters in a way. That's a weird thought.

Anyway, I'm currently on the run from, uh, all those people I just mentioned. Well, everyone aside from Xehanort, that is. And as for why I'm on the run, it's because I decided it'd be a good idea to stowaway on a Gummi Ship to Superbia High, where my friends Sora, Riku, and Kairi are attending.

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, honest! I just got to thinking that it'd be cool if I could attend school, make some new friends, and, y'know, expand my social circle. Heck, maybe even become more responsible!

Yeahhh, even I know that sounds dumb.

To tell you the truth, being cooped up in my room at The Land of Departure all day, every day, is so draining. Every time I ask to go to another world, Aqua yells at me, and the others tell me, 'it's too soon.' What's too soon? Me losing my mind?!

Gah, sorry. I shouldn't be losing my cool, even in my head. I'm a Keyblade wielder, after all. I gotta keep my head in the game, even if that game's rigged from the start.

Still, I'm kinda shocked I managed to stow away in the ship's bathroom successfully. No one had to go during that 8-hour flight?

Well, whatever. I'm here now. Superbia High. It's a pretty cool-looking place.

Now, what's the plan?

"Excuse me, are you lost?"

A deep, feminine voice alerted Ventus from his thoughts. He glanced, noticing the lady's unique attire.

"Uh…yes...?" Ventus shrugged and grinned, scratching his head.

The lady, whose face was covered by a mask, was a bit perplexed by his odd response but chose to let it go for the time being.

"I see. You're standing in a high-traffic zone, so come with me, and I'll help you get to where you need to be," The lady stated, her tone having an aggressive edge to it.

Ventus, feeling pulled in by her words, complied and moved to her side, right next to one of the rest areas housed with a plethora of benches.

Jeez. This lady sure reminds me of Aqua.

"…So?" The lady inquired once again. "Where do you need to be? What year are you in? What is your major? Have you gotten your schedule yet?"

Her questions barraged Ventus, who was understandably overwhelmed, his eyes darting all over the place in a panic.

Wow. She really IS like Aqua.

"Invi!"

Another feminine voice approached, except this one was far lighter in tone. For some reason, Ventus felt oddly transfixed by her voice; it was pleasing to his ears.

"Don't harass the poor boy like that! Look at how scared he is!"

"Hmph. I'm simply asking questions."

"Have you thought about HOW you ask questions?"

"Excuse me?"

Uh oh. If this continues, it's gonna be a problem. I gotta step in!

"I-It's alright! I don't mind…." Ventus raised his hands, hoping for peace.

The two masked girls ceased their bickering and looked at Ventus. While their masks didn't show it, they were blushing in shame.

"I-I apologize for my tone," Invi coughed. "Back to the matter at hand, would you mind stating who you are?"

"I'm Ventus."

Crap! Why did I say that?! I'm so stupid!

"Okay, Ventus," The other girl said. "What year are you in?"

Her voice instilled that same delight into Ventus as it did earlier. What was going on with him? As if she were an angel, he felt a desire to be truthful. He couldn't lie to such a sweet-sounding girl!

I…I can't keep this up. I'd get caught sooner or later anyway.

Ventus tried to inwardly reason himself out of this dilemma via logic, avoiding the elephant in the theoretical room.

"Ventus? Oh, that reminds me! We haven't introduced ourselves yet! Apologies for the poor manners!" The light-hearted girl bowed in apology.

"T-T-That's okay! You don't have to bow…." Ventus fervently replied.

Wow. This girl is NOT like Aqua.

"I'm Ava, and she's Invi," The light-hearted girl said, pointing to herself and Invi, respectively. "We're direct disciples of the Master of Masters and members of Superbia High's Board of Directors."

Wait. WHAT?! THE Master of Masters?! They're his disciples?! AND they help run the school?! Man, this is some mess I've gotten into.

"Ventus, is something wrong?" Ava asked, for what, to Ventus anyway, felt like the umpteenth time. Yet, despite her insistence, Ventus could not lie to her. He couldn't explain why, but even the sheer thought of upsetting this girl made him sad.

Sure, she'd also become upset at the truth yet, if he had to choose between two evils, it'd have to be the lesser.

"I can't keep doing this…." Ventus said aloud, prompting Invi and Ava to glance at him quizzically.

"The truth is…I'm not supposed to be here. I might have…sorta stowed away on a Gummi Ship."

…..

"YOU WHAT?!"

Yeahhhh, those are about the reactions I expected.

{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}

Roxas was exhausted, to put it mildly. He didn't think unpacking would take literal hours. Granted, much of the struggle wasn't in his hands. But, thankfully, Superbia High transported all student luggage around a week or so before classes started. So, he at least didn't have to lug around his crap from the port to the dorms.

Still, he had to wonder how Lea, of all people, handled this last year. As far as he was concerned, Lea did the absolute barest minimum to pass here. And, if Roxas was struggling on something as minute as unpacking, then, well, he had to wonder if he was weaker-willed than he thought.

"Well, what can you do," Roxas said aloud to himself. "At least I'm practically all done now."

Roxas walked to the entrance of the dorm room and gazed at his work. The bedsheets were all set up, posters of his favorite Twilight Town bands were plastered all over the wall, clothes were all neatly folded into their respective drawers, and he even managed to hook up his gaming consoles. All was well.

Granted, the other half of the dorm room was still empty. His roommate, someone called 'Sora' based on the nameplates outside, wasn't here yet. Roxas was admittedly not thrilled about dorming with a stranger, but he supposed that was just the price of school life. If he could have his way, he'd instead room with Lea, but he was a second-year, so that wasn't possible.

"Hmm, what to do, what to do…." Roxas mused. Lea was busy catching up with his friends, a club simply called 'The Organization.' Roxas and Xion never met this group, but their super vague name did nothing but heighten the mystery. Lea, at least, seemed pretty eager to catch up with them. So, that was nice.

"Actually, I wonder how Xion's doing. We haven't talked since arriving here."

Roxas pulled out his GummiPhone from his pocket and called her up, though it eventually reached voicemail. Her purposefully cutesy tone in this message always made Roxas rolls his eyes a bit. Still, it was endearing in its own way.

"Hmm. Probably busy. Guess now's the best time to explore this campus, hopefully, get a lay of the land. This place is freaking massive."

Roxas put on his checkerboard-themed jacket and locked up, pondering wherein the living hell he should explore first. The probably literal millions of gardens? Cafeteria? Battle Arena? God knows how many classrooms?

He sighed. This was a lot. He supposed the website and Lea's words were correct. This school really was its own world.

"Roxas? That you?"

Roxas directed his attention to the expansive hallway, seeing a familiar figure approaching him.

"Wait. Hayner? H-How are-"

"Surprise! I guess…" Hayner sheepishly interrupted. "Truth is, Pence, Olette, and I all got in, though admittance was pretty damn late, gotta admit. Just got told a few days ago."

"Admittance?" Roxas could scarcely believe those words. "You mean, you're a student here?! Olette and Pence too?!"

"Yep to all 3," Hayner smiled enthusiastically. "Glad to be here, buddy. Looks like the Twilight Gang's back together!"

"Wow." Roxas was dumbstruck, a childish twinkle shining from his eyes.

"What, you gonna cry Roxas?" Hayner teased. "And here I thought you were looking forward to clipping your wings."

"What? Get real! This is like, the best outcome! All of us are at Superbia High! Together!"

"Indeed, Rucksack. All of us are here together."

Another familiar figure approached, and this was one Roxas nor Hayner derived any delight in seeing.

"Wait. WHAT?!" Roxas and Hayner exclaimed simultaneously. "Seifer?!"

"The one and only." Seifer flexed his arms. "And please, I don't swing that way."

"…Excuse me?" Roxas replied incredulously.

"Come on, guys. Screaming my name like my lovestruck female fans? How else am I supposed to interpret that?"

"I see your ego's the same as ever," Hayner said under his breath.

"So, what the hell are you doing here, Seifer?" Roxas couldn't help but ask.

"What do you mean? I got accepted. Fair and square."

"Yeahhhhh, I have a hard time believing that," Roxas retorted.

"He's right, y'know? We all got in fair and square, too." Yet more familiar figures approached, and Roxas started to think he was losing his god damn mind.

"This can't be real," Roxas closed his eyes.

"Rai and Fuu too?" Hayner could hardly breathe.

"The Twilight Town Disciplinary Committee is ready to become the Superbia High Disciplinary Committee!" Seifer said haughtily, raising his arms.

"What the hell are you all majoring in anyway?" Roxas asked, ignoring Seifer's outrageous claim.

"None of your beeswax Roxee. Kinda rude to ask such a personal question," Seifer glared.

"How is that personal?! That's literally one of the questions you answer on the damn application!"

"Roxas," Hayner put a hand on his shoulder. "He's just trolling you. Let's go."

Roxas didn't respond and stared wordlessly at Seifer, Rai, and Fuu before deciding to walk away. Hayner followed suit.

"Why are you running away, Roxas?!" Seifer shouted. "You scared of me shaming you in front of your girl again? Best keep her away from me then!"

Roxas didn't turn back, but the toxic laughter from the three behind him caused him to clench his fists in darkened rage. Hayner could only offer his sympathies.

{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}

"Sora."

"Yeah?"

"I can't believe how hard you were staring."

"Staring? At what, Kairi?"

She could only sigh.

The two of them just concluded their business at the Administration Office, receiving their schedules and other vital information. The most noteworthy upcoming event was a welcome ceremony in the Auditorium that evening, roughly three hours from now.

It was a pretty extended stay since they were in the midst of fellow new student traffic. Apparently, older kids got their necessities mailed to their dorms since the staff wanted new students to acclimate to the school layout. Kairi understood the logic behind it, but it was still a mess. That seemingly infinitely spaced Office was packed to the brim with new students of all majors.

Though, to be honest, none of that bothered Kairi all that much. She was a princess, after all, and was used to swarms of crowds and the like. What did annoy her was Sora. Or, rather, to put it more accurately, his behavior.

When Sora and Kairi sat on one of the numerous sofas in the Office and waited for their respective numbers to be called up, Sora was looking everywhere.

Kairi could understand general curiosity. Even she found herself looking around the place like a cat desperately searching for a comfy place to sleep.

Hell, she could even understand nervousness driving his behavior, to an extent. First day jitters and all that. But, why in the living hell was he exclusively staring at women?!

She wasn't crazy. She wouldn't even call herself possessive of him by any means. She had feelings for him, but they weren't together. He was free to look at whoever he pleased. But did he seriously have to lack any amount of tact?!

He's with his adorable childhood friend who has tried coming on to him every other day, and he had the gall to stare at breasts twice the size of his own damn head right next to her?!

"Uh, are you doing okay, Kairi? You look...mad. Like really mad." Sora asked, genuine concern seeping into his tone.

"Huh?!" Kairi let out louder than intended. "I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine."

"Ooookay? Are you sure, Kairi?" Sora's worry amplified, and he stopped walking, looking at Kairi in the eyes. "If there's something wrong, let me know."

I swear, Kairi thought, he's too caring for his own good. Relax, Kairi, relax. You're losing your cool way too quickly. He's a boy going through puberty! And knowing Sora, he's probably a late bloomer. So it's no wonder he'd find himself so transfixed by those…things. I even caught him stealing glances at Master Aqua's recently. And, I mean, she IS beautiful! I don't blame him. But, has he seen my legs?! I'm hot too!

"Kairi. Seriously. Talk to me," Sora said.

...Ugh. I have to calm down. This is absurd.

"I'm fine, Sora," Kairi replied. Her tone was starting to ease up. "Just thinking about girl things."

Sora didn't look entirely convinced, but it was clear Kairi didn't want to linger on…whatever the hell just happened.

"If you say so…" Sora reluctantly complied.

"Anyway," Kairi started, eager to change the subject. "I'm glad we share some general education classes."

"Yeah, I don't see the point in these classes, though. I mean, we're majoring in something for a reason, right?"

"Well, think about it this way, Sora," Kairi began. "Would you rather be a one-trick pony or a jack of all trades?"

"Uh…"

"Sorry, what I meant to say is, wouldn't you rather be well-rounded than just specializing in one subject? Variation is good for the brain, you know."

"I guess you have a point."

The two continued conversing, starting to take in the gorgeous scenery. For as busy as the area was, whoever did the cleaning was doing a damn great job. Scraps of garbage were barely identifiable. Eventually, screams from nearby took their attention.

"Oh. My. God. Is that THE KAIRI OF RADIANT GARDEN?!"

Dozens, no, hundreds of students began surrounding Kairi and Sora, like deer caught in headlights.

Sora and Kairi were silent, not sure what to make of all the sudden attention. Finally, however, one eager girl walked up to them and began spouting what they could barely discern as words.

"WowKairinowayhaha,sorry,anyway,um,you're,like,asuperinspirationtoallofusgirlsyour'esoprettyandstrongandkindandyoulooksooocuteinyourprincessdressdidyoubringthatwithyoubythewaynottobeweirdoranythingbut…."

Sora was catching on to what was happening here.

"Oh wow, Kairi, I knew you were popular but, this is wayyy beyond what I was expecting," Sora said.

"Yeah, you're telling me," Kairi could hardly believe it. She knew she had a particularly…passionate fanbase back on Radiant Garden, and that was to be expected. It was her homeworld. She knew people from other worlds knew of her, and she was talked about online here and there. But she had no idea she had this many fans. Seeing so many people look at her with glee and respect was, to be blunt, really boosting her ego. Still, she was a student now. They were all equals. There was a time and place for whatever this was.

Just as Kairi was about to attempt to defuse the situation, though, the crowd surrounding the two started closing in, causing panic. Sora was lost in the hustle and bustle of people shoving him out of the way, and they started asking Kairi for autographs, hangout times, and even dates. It was clear most of them were lost in the moment, which Sora couldn't blame.

He's known Kairi for pretty much his whole life, so the fact that she's a princess never really meant much to him. He knew she was important, obviously. Like those trips to Radiant Garden to see royal ceremonies and the like honed in that facet of her life. He's never just seen her swarmed by fans like this out of nowhere. Whew.

Riku and Kairi were genuinely incredible people. Riku was an accomplished Keyblade wielder and would likely become a Master when he graduated from here. And Kairi was well, Kairi. Everything about her was incredible.

"You a fan too?"

A newcomer took Sora by surprise. He turned around to see a black-haired girl, donning an ash grey skirt and a stylish, charcoal sleeveless blouse.

"I guess you could say that," Sora stared at Kairi admirably, handling the crowd deftly. "But we're friends."

"Friends, huh? Right… that's what all love-obsessed stalkers say," The black-haired girl replied.

"Hey, I'm serious!"

"I'm joking, I'm joking. I saw you two talking to each other earlier," Xion assured.

"Oh, okay," Sora accepted. "Sorry, but who are you exactly?"

"Ah, sorry. I have a bad habit of striking up conversation and not introducing myself. I'm Xion."

"Alright. She-on?" Sora tried pronouncing her name to no avail.

"Hehe, it's pronounced She-Own. I get that a lot, don't worry," Xion clarified.

"Okay, Xion."

The two laughed at each other's awkwardness before Sora brought forth another topic.

"So, did you need me for something?"

"No, you just looked like you were lonely."

"Did I?"

"Yeah, big time."

Sora wasn't sure what to think about that revelation, but Xion decided to change the subject since she noticed how uncomfortable it made him.

"Soooo, I assume you're a first-year?" She asked.

"Yeah, you too?"

Xion nodded.

Sora kind of had a feeling. It was an odd sensation to describe. It was somewhat obvious who was new to school and who wasn't based on the way people carried themselves. Sora, for instance, if what Xion assessed was accurate, probably looked like an out-of-depth first-year. And to Sora, Xion looked outgoing and confident, yet her lack of surrounded friends made her seem like a newbie too. Well, she could be a loner, though, with a personality like hers that seemed hard to believe.

"To tell you the truth," Xion started. "I wanted to get a look around the campus on my own, without my friends."

"So you're not alone?"

"Nope. My two best friends got in with me, and I'm super grateful for that. You have no idea," Xion giggled. Sora couldn't help but smile himself. It was clear that she held her two friends in high regard.

"But, I don't want to hide behind them for my whole stay here, you know? It feels like it's time to branch out a bit, meet new people. You understand, right?"

"Yeah, completely," Sora admitted. "I'm the same way, actually. In fact, I also got admitted with my two best friends."

"That really is a funny coincidence," She beamed. Sora didn't realize it himself, but his expression was gleeful when just thinking about Kairi and Riku, similar to Xion when she thought of her own two best friends.

"What's your major?" Sora couldn't help asking.

"Believe it or not," Xion raised her right hand in the air, summoning a fantastical blade, "I'm majoring in the Keyblade Arts!"

Sora looked at her Keyblade with utter fascination. It emitted several golden spikes at the tip of the blade and above the hilt, while the keychain had a distinct 'X' engraving on its center, with jagged edges.

"That's a cool Keyblade," Sora said, awe practically radiating from his face. "The ones my friends wield looking nothing like this."

"Thanks," Xion chose to send it away, having it vanish in a brief stream of light. "According to my Master, it's called the Aubade. Was hoping for something cooler sounding, but oh well."

Sora chuckled at that. This Xion was easy to talk to.

"You said you have friends who are Keyblade wielders?" Xion asked.

"Yup! Kairi there," Sora pointed to the princess still in the midst of dealing with the sizable crowd, "and some friends of mine back home. One enrolled with us here, too. His name's Riku."

"Huh, interesting. And you're not one yourself?"

"…Nah. I'm majoring in Culinary Arts. That sounds kinda lame in comparison, huh?" Sora smirked at his own slightly derisive joke. Xion didn't seem to find it funny, though.

"Not at all," she said right away. "Food's a big deal. I sure as hell wish I could cook. I can make some mean pancakes, but that's about it." Xion said as she placed her hands on her hips, looking uncharacteristically stern.

"Pancakes? Seriously?" Sora tried to rein it in, but the absurdity of her confidence for such a simple dish was too much for him to handle, initiating a laughing fit.

"Hey! It's not THAT funny!"

"S-Sorry," Sora apologized, still amid his laughing episode. "Pancakes are just, well, you know…."

"Yeah?"

"Never mind."

"Come on; you can't NOT say it now!"

"It doesn't matter! It's a stupid joke!"

"Ohh, so you're a coward then?"

"What?"

"Finish your 'joke.'"

"I think I'll just leave you hanging."

"Wowww, you sure must be a hit with the ladies. What a tease."

"I am not!"

"Don't be so down on yourself! You seem like the popular type!"

"I don't know about-"

"WHEW! I'm finally free!"

Sora and Xion ceased their little fake argument as a third voice joined the fray.

"I swear, I thought that crowd would NEVER end. Sorry for the holdup, Sor-uh?" Kairi noticed the girl standing next to him.

Noticing the perplexed state of Kairi's expression, Xion decided to alleviate any potentially erroneous conclusions.

"Hey there, I'm Xion," she waved. "I'm just a random first-year student who struck up some conversation with your pal Sora here."

Kairi wasn't quite sure what to make of this new face. Sora looked happy enough, though, so she decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.

"Hello Xion, I'm Kairi. A new first-year student along with Sora," She reciprocated the introduction. "How are you doing?"

"I'm alright. Just trying to get a better understanding of how everything's laid out here, you know. Maps don't do it justice."

"You're telling me," Kairi giggled. "Sora and I have already had our hands full for the past few hours."

"Ah right, Sora," Kairi turned to him, smiling. "I was thinking of grabbing a bite to eat before the welcoming ceremony took place. You want to come with?"

"Yeah, sure," Sora nodded.

"Y-You're invited too, of course!" Kairi turned to Xion, feeling a bit guilty for leaving her out.

Xion was silent for a moment, contemplating whether she wanted to interrupt these two on their totally 'not' date. Still, she quickly decided that her going would be for the best. She wasn't sure about how Sora felt for Kairi. He looked pretty neutral around her, implying he's either dense or doesn't view her in any romantic light.

Kairi definitely had the hots for him, though. The way she looks at him says it all.

Even in this brief, not even minute-long interaction. Her on and off blushes, occasional stealing glances, and apparent propensity to smile whenever he so much as happened to look in her direction were so damn obvious. It was unreal. Kairi looked like the definition of a storybook princess.

And, as a girl dealing with a rather dense boy herself (at least she hoped he was just dense), she felt inclined to help a fellow gal in need.

"Xion?" Sora asked, noting how she hadn't yet answered.

"Y-Yeah, I'll come along, if you don't mind. Staying in a group sounds more comfortable right now."

"Alright," Kairi nodded. "There is a cafeteria. I was thinking about going to a café though. This academy is more like a mini-city than anything else."

"Sure, sounds good," Xion replied.

"And, since Sora is a professional chef, I was thinking of letting him decide," Kairi beamed.

"Well, I wouldn't exactly say I'm a professional. I'm not quite there yet." Sora averted his gaze, a flattered grin forming on his lips.

"Well, you're already a professional in my heart."

"I'll accept that badge of honor," he laughed, Kairi joining in.

I swear, Xion, thought, viewing the fairytale-esque scenario playing before her eyes, they're legitimately like a newly-wed couple. I didn't think these types of relationships could ever actually exist. Oh, wait, excuse me. They aren't in a relationship. How could I be so foolish? It's not like THEIR CHEMISTRY IS THE MOST OBVIOUS GOD DAMN THING IN THE WORLD.

"So, Xion, right?" Kairi directed her attention to her as Sora performed cursory glances at the various cafes in the vicinity.

"What's your major? Forgot to ask you. I'm actually a Keyblade wielder, though you probably already knew that. Not to sound narcissistic, but my face is kind of everywhere," Kairi tried to laugh it off.

"That's not narcissistic at all. It's the truth!" Xion insisted. "I'm also a Keyblade wielder!"

"Really? Mind if you show me yours?"

"Only if you show meyours."

Whenever Keyblade wielders encountered one another, there was this silently understood sense of pride for the weapons they carried. They were representative of their heart, after all. And seeing their feelings become literal strength to fight for their ideals is something to be proud of.

Kairi summoned her Keyblade, a colorful spectacle.

"Wow," Xion beamed. "It's beautiful."

"Thanks. It's called Destiny's Embrace. I love it. It reminds me of my second home," Kairi stared at her blade in delight. If Kairi was right and understood what it symbolized, it was way too obvious. Still, she didn't think anyone else did. Regardless, she found it glamorous.

Xion summoned Aubade.

"Yours is nothing to scoff at either. Looks kinda techno and reminds me of the sun," Kairi complimented.

"Yeah," Xion smiled. "I can see that."

Sora was watching the exchange with genuine delectation. Him and Kairi making a new friend on their first day of admittance was a dream come true. This Xion girl was pretty nice. Funny too.

Unfortunately, when he saw them summon their Keyblades, his heart lurched. He felt it screaming.

Step forward. Can you do it?

For reasons he couldn't fathom, that voice from his dreams spoke to him again. This never happened before. Never in broad daylight.

Choosing to ignore the voice, Sora grasped his chest, squeezing the skin above his heart as if repressing something he could not quite understand.

"So your name's Ventus, huh? Kinda windy but alright," A man donned in a black cloak addressed the young boy, who entered the premises with Invi and Ava.

"Master," Invi started. "This boy said he stowed away on a Gummi Ship. He should be sent to the dungeon immediately!"

"Dungeon?!" Ventus and even Ava exclaimed.

"Since when the hell did we have a dungeon? Get your head out of your ass, Invi," The black-cloaked man said, stunning the young woman into silence.

"Oh! Er. Um. Sorry, that was probably too harsh. Ignore what I said. What I MEANT to say is there's no need to take such drastic measures! Venty here-"

"Ventus," the boy corrected him.

"Yes, Ventus. You're a Keyblade wielder, right?"

Ventus' eyes widened.

"How did you know?"

"It's just something experienced welders can detect. No biggie. Anyway, Ventus, why did you sneak your way to Superbia High?"

"Why?" Ventus repeated. "Uh, well, I just wanted a change of pace. I've lived in the same place for as long as I can remember, and it's been driving me crazy."

"I see, I see. So you want to broaden your horizons, huh? Ah, the endearing tales of strife from a young heart! How touching!"

"Is this guy okay?" Ventus couldn't help asking.

"Don't mind the Master's quirks," Ava insisted. "He's…a bit out there, is all. But he means well!"

"I relate to you, you know," The Master said somberly, tone changing entirely.

"Y-You do?" Ventus asked reservedly.

"Yup, all too familiar. Being cooped up in one place for too long makes you want to see the world, right?! Expand your perspectives, strengthen your heart, and mold your ever-changing malleable young mind!"

The Master raised his voice and dramatically raised his arms in the air while doing so.

"I too desired that once upon a time. Still, kid, you gotta remember. Running away bites you in the ass eventually."

Ventus couldn't argue there.

"But, since I relate, and since you clearly mean no harm, I'm willing to let you study you here on one condition."

Ventus could hardly believe what he heard.

"Master! With all due respect, that's outrageous! He did not even apply!" Invi argued, recovered from her earlier shock.

The Master sighed and looked out of the middle window of his Office. It was a cozy room, that's for sure, Ventus inwardly praised. Lots of bookcases with tons of books he couldn't even read the titles of. He wasn't sure if that was a sign of his lack of education or if the Master of Masters was really that smart.

Huh, this carpet seems like a weird choice. Purple, really? With how brown the bookcases and walls are, these color choices don't line up, Ventus thought. But, then again, who am I to judge peoples' rooms? Mine is a mess. And, the Master of Masters seems like a pretty…weird guy.

Ventus noted the oddly long pause from the Master as he continued to gaze out the window.

That thing up there looks pretty important; Ventus directed his attention to the glass sphere above the windows. That looks like a Station of Awakening? What are those symbols, though? Animal masks? Oh, wait a second…

Ventus turned to Invi and Ava, who were patiently awaiting the Master's words.

Huh, apparently so. Their masks are part of that picture. And there are three more. I guess more of the Master's apprentices…

"Taking a look at that wondrous artwork?" Ava noticed.

"Uh, yeah. Hope that's not a problem."

"No problem at all! You've probably already noticed, but those masks are designed off of ours. The Master's direct apprentice is a talented artist. He's the one who drew this," Ava explained.

"Direct apprentice?" Ventus repeated.

"Yeah, he isn't mentioned much, but he's the one the Master directly passes on everything he knows to. The rest of us are more like general students. So you can view him like someone who's closely tutored."

"Luxu." Invi suddenly said, her gaze still fixated on the Master. "He hasn't shown his face today."

"Don't worry about him!" The Master stated, turning around from the window. "He's already hard at work with his latest training session!"

"Already?!" Invi exclaimed. "You work him hard."

"That's the price of being taught my invaluable knowledge! At no price or distance, even! Generous, aren't I?"

"Anyway," Ventus started, "What is it you were saying about me being allowed to stay here?"

"Ah, right, right. So, Ventay-"

"Ventus."

"Right. Ventus. I'm gonna let you stay here as a student under one strict condition."

Ventus gulped.

"Contact your caretakers and have them approve of it."

"God damn it."

"Ventus! Language!" Ava scolded.

Really? You're gonna scold me on language when your Master trash-talked your fellow apprentice there earlier? Ventus thought.

Well, come to think of it, I can't imagine Ava talking back to this guy. Something about him always seems scarily off. I still can't believe HE'S the legendary Master of Masters. I wasn't expecting a more upbeat and erratic Sora, that's for sure.

The Master lazily sat down on his fancy chair decorated with what seemed to be engraved jewelry on its handles. Wouldn't that be uncomfortable, was a stray thought passing through Ventus' mind.

"If it were up to me, I'd let you stay here in a heartbeat! Can't outrun responsibility, though. Just when you think it's out of sight, it's lurking behind your every corner, waiting for a chance to pounce you."

Ventus looked lost.

"Point I'm trying to make here is it'll be easier on you if you tell your parents or whoever about your desire now, rather than wait it out as long as possible and screw yourself over in the long run. And, I'd also rather not get chewed out. Can you imagine?! Me, the Master of Masters getting yelled at by your mom and dad?! Ah, that'd crack me up! I don't think I would even be able to take that meeting seriously!"

"Uh-huh," Ventus nodded.

"Do yourself and me a favor then, kid. All it'll take is a nice, simple phone call. Just dial up whoever you gotta dial-up and let them know. Of course, they'll have to say yes eventually, right? I mean, I know if my kid were getting offered the opportunity to study at THE Superbia High, I'd say yes straight away!"

The Master's eager tone threw off Ventus, but he got the message. He sighed.

"Do I have a time limit or anything?" Ventus asked.

"Hmmmmmm, how abouuuut tomorrow here at the same time, 4 PM?"

"Alright," Ventus nodded. He was going to turn around and leave, but he stopped himself.

"By the way, thanks for all this. I'm not sure why you're giving me such leeway, but it means a lot to me. Even if this doesn't pan out, I won't be upset."

With those words, Ventus left the Master of Masters office, feeling simultaneously thrilled and despondent.

"Convincing Terra, Aqua, and Master Eraqus, huh? Sounds impossible, but hey, anything can happen, right?"

"That's right."

A voice from behind Ventus agreed. He turned around, identifying it to belong to Ava.

"Ava? Did you need something?"

"Well, I figured you'd be lost without me. You seem like the type to get easily lost, even with a map. No offense. Just the way you carry yourself," She waved her hands around.

"Wow, you got me all figured me out. Can't say you're wrong," Ventus smiled.

"If you don't mind, I could give you as much of a tour of the academy as I can before the welcoming ceremony starts," Ava offered. "There are a few people I want to check in with, too."

"Sure," Ventus agreed immediately. Spending more time with Ava sounds like a good time.

With that, the two Keyblade wielders went on their way to the student-packed depths of Superbia High.

{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}

"Hey, Riku! Glad to see back, man!"

A silver-haired youth excitedly shook Riku's outstretched hand. The two came across each other in the dorms, and as it turns out, they'd be sharing rooms this year.

"Likewise, Ephemer," Riku smiled. "How have things been back at Scala?"

At that question, Ephemer unconsciously rolled his eyes. "Things are, well, they're something alright."

"What does that mean?" Riku grinned.

"Just the same old same old, you know. Paperwork. Combat training. More paperwork. Rinse and repeat."

"Yeah, that sounds like the Scala I'm familiar with."

Ephemer looked downcast, and before Riku could cheer him up, Ephemer did so himself.

"Enough about home!" Ephemer shook his head. "All that matters is that we're back in Superbia! Can't believe we're already second-years. Man, time flies."

"You're telling me," Riku agreed. "Some of my friends are now here, too. This year's looking to be one hell of a doozy."

Riku set down his bag, taking a glance at the state of the room. His idol posters (that he'd never tell Sora or Kairi about) were hung up above his bed, the special magic-infused weights Terra gave him were placed next to the T.V. and childhood drawing of him, Kairi, and Sora was framed above his bed's helm.

Ephemer's side consisted of miniature models of machinery. His upbringing at Scala caused him to become fascinated with all things technology, but more in the sense of admiration. He had no desire to delve into the intricacies of assembly and jargon. He just thought machines looked cool.

"Lo and behold! To think I'd be roomed right across from you two!"

A familiar voice caused Riku and Ephemer to turn their heads to the dorm room's entranceway, and they beamed at the visitor. The three of them fist-bumped each other, initiating a brief fit of laughter.

"Lea!" Riku exclaimed. "Huh, what a coincidence. You're roomed across from us?"

"Sure am," Lea waved. "With my buddy Isa too. Seems like things are turning up for us, huh?"

"Yeah, this seems pretty fortunate," Ephemer noted. "Riku, you said some of your friends are here too now, right?"

"Yeah," Riku nodded. "Kairi and Sora. Think I've talked to you about them before."

"Oh, no way! They're all you ever talked about! And now they're here as Superbia High students too? Whew," Ephemer whistled. "It's sure getting packed with familiar faces."

"You're telling me," Lea leaned on the wall near the entranceway door. "My two best friends are here as well. Roxas and Xion."

"Holy shit," Riku said, wide-eyed. "Everybody really is coming here, huh?"

Lea grinned, hanging his arms behind his neck.

"I can already tell. This year is gonna be wild."

{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}

Namine wasn't sure what to think of herself. Not anymore.

She sat by her lonesome in a café called 'Traverse Tacos,' munching away at some nachos she ordered. Usually, she'd worry about calorie intake. But to be blunt, she no longer gave a shit.

Stress was eating away at her from the inside out. Her father, who she was forced to call DiZ, admitted her here with no warning. Saying it was for her own good.

Like, what?! Where the hell did this decision come from? He always kept her cooped up in that mansion all her life. And now he decides to send her away? With no explanation? Did he catch onto her daily escapades of sneaking out from the vents in her room and got fed up? Why not just kick her out onto the street then?

What the hell was going on?

Even the paperwork was all done behind her back, not to mention her luggage also being sent here.

"Majoring in Art Design, huh?"Namine gazed at her school ID and schedule. "I guess that man should know at least that much."

"Excuse me, miss. Are you alright?"

Namine turned her head, seeing a spiky-haired boy staring at her with a gaze engraved with worry.

"Who…?"

"Ah, sorry!" He grinned. "I'm Sora. New first-year student here."

Namine wasn't sure what to make of the boy. He seemed to be around her age, and that hair certainly uh, it stood out, for sure. She guessed he just came out of the bathroom, seeing as she was seated right next to it and she heard the door close.

"Did you need something from me?" Namine asked, remaining neutral in tone.

"Uh, not really-"

"Then would you mind leaving me alone?" She interrupted, more loudly than intended.

"…Sorry," Sora said. "It's just…."

Sora paused, causing Namine to stare at him intently, even if fueled by aggravation. She had no desire to converse with anyone right now. Least of all, a boy who was probably trying to hit on her.

"You were crying."

Her thoughts stopped.

"Huh?"

"Did you not notice?" Sora's frown deepened. "You looked like you were in a lot of pain. I couldn't just leave you like that, you know?"

Namine moved one of her fingers to her face, feeling the ever-familiar wetness of tear streaks. Sora was right.

"Is there something going on?" Sora asked. "Personally, I can't stand it whenever people walk by someone clearly in pain."

He gazed at the numerous occupants who took no notice of their conversation.

"I'm free to talk, if you want to that is! Not like I'm forcing you or anything!" Sora laughed awkwardly, not really thinking about what he would say.

Namine would tell him, 'Don't waste my time,' but that didn't seem fair. This guy, hmm.

This guy, Sora, Namine thought. I can't pinpoint why, but he seems to care for some reason. I can't detect any malice…

Namine kept this to herself. She had the ability to sense other people's emotions. It was far from perfect, yet it got her out of trouble many times throughout her life. Each person's feelings depicted themselves as colors across varying intensities.

And Sora's current emotions were what she generally identified as 'Compassionate,' a moderate orange hue she's rarely ever seen before.

She took a closer look at Sora himself, who stared at her with eyes of pure innocence, and, as loathe as she was to admit it, an adorable frown that she didn't want to see plastered on his face anymore.

"Take a seat," Namine said, patting the chair across from her.

"Huh?"

"You heard me, right?"

"Y-Yeah, alright."

Sora abided and sat across from her.

"You can take some if you want," Namine gestured to the remaining nachos in her bowl. "I've had way too much already."

"..Sure." Sora accepted, casually grabbing one of the chips before quietly chewing on it.

"You see, I…I don't know what I'm doing here," Namine's shoulders slumped, and she looked dazed.

"What do you mean, exactly?"

"My…father…DiZ, he sent me here without my knowing."

"What?! You mean you got accepted without realizing it?"

"Yeah, somehow. They scrutinize applications here pretty closely, so I have no idea how far back this was planned."

Namine stopped talking, so Sora felt as if he had to continue the conversation. He was admittedly a bit nervous about upsetting or triggering something traumatic for her, yet he still decided to see this through.

"Do you and your dad not get along?"

"No," She answered right away. "In fact, I hate him, so, so, soooo much." Namine's fists tightened, and her expression became hardened. Sora wasn't a Keyblade wielder, but even he could tell there was darkness emanating from her. A severe amount of it at that And that meant her heart must have been in unimaginable pain if this was going unchecked.

"All he's ever done is lie to me, and when he's not lying to me, he's beating me, and when he's not beating me, he's ignoring me," Namine listed, her voice gravely low. Sora could barely hear her.

He was taken aback, sure. But this girl needed someone to talk to. Someone who wouldn't judge her and make things worse.

"I can't pretend to know what you're going through or pretend to sympathize," Sora began. He gently placed his palm atop one of her fists.

"But, what I CAN tell you straight from the heart is that you should take advantage of this opportunity."

"…Huh?"

"From how you described him, your dad sounds like a real piece of work, and I don't at all blame you for feeling the way you do. I'd actually be more worried if you didn't feel that way." The intensity of Sora's gaze heightened as he neglected the remaining nachos on the table.

"You have to channel that anger into strength, strength to better yourself," Sora smiled. "And this is the place to do it. Sure, your dad admitted you here behind your back, and you had no choice in the matter. That sucks. Trust me, I know that feeling all too well."

Sora paused briefly. Where did that come from? Why would I know what that feels like?

He ignored that apparent slip-up and continued.

"You may not entirely relate to this, but I have two friends. One of my best friends and his Master. They're both Keyblade wielders, and they both struggle with accepting their darkness." Sora started.

"Back when my best friend began learning how to use the Keyblade, it was clear he had more darkness in his heart than light. And, even though society began accepting those with darker powers, it broke him. Shattered his worldview. He never even wanted to see a Keyblade ever again. It just reminded him of what he perceived as his weakness. There's a tendency to see darkness as this unreasonable, monstrous beast, you know? A scary unknown that just drives people to seek power."

Namine nodded, invested in seeing where the story was going.

"But is that really a bad thing?" Sora said, catching Namine off guard. "Just because something inside of you scares you doesn't mean that it's necessarily bad. My friend's Master told him as much. It's what you do with that darkness, that negativity inside of you that determines where you go and how you end up. Darkness on its own isn't bad."

Namine was speechless. Interpreting it as confusion, Sora panicked.

"Uh, sorry! I guess what I mean to say is that while you shouldn't forget about your pain, the pain you rightfully feel, you also shouldn't let it define you. Understand it and accept it to become stronger. Don't let it become a leech that sucks away who you trulyare. It's much easier said than done, I know. Though realizing that alone is a decent enough first step, I think," Sora continued.

"Superbia High is known as a place of change, right? I overheard some students calling it that earlier. Since that's the case, you should use this school in that way. Accept who you are and try to move on from your pain while also accepting it. Make new friends, learn new things, and maybe realize that life isn't as bad as you think it is, you know?"

Namine didn't say anything and merely kept staring at Sora.

"That was probably a mess, huh?" Sora grinned, scratching his head.

"No. Not at all." Namine smiled, the first time she's done so in this meeting. "To be honest…that opened my eyes."

Sora had to admit, he kinda just pulled all that out of his ass. Still, he meant all of what he said. He desperately wanted to see this girl become happy. Seeing anybody with that pain, not even realizing that they're crying, it's too much for him to bear seeing.

"You have a way with words. No one's ever spoken to me like that before," Namine admitted. As far as Sora was concerned, her whole attitude seemed to have changed. She was actively smiling now, and her tone was far friendlier, less aggressive.

"Thank you, Sora." While seated, Namine bowed her head, a reaction Sora wasn't entirely comfortable with.

"You don't have to do that!" Sora insisted. "I'm just glad you're feeling better."

"If you don't mind," Namine continued, "would you mind exchanging numbers? Having a friend here I could talk to whenever possible would help me a lot."

"Sure!" Sora replied eagerly, taking out his GummiPhone.

"Um, sorry for how I treated you earlier, by the way. I swear I'm not normally like that! I was just-"

"You don't have to justify yourself," Sora interrupted her. "It was clear you weren't feeling well, and there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone needs an outlet every now and then, right? Someone to rely on?"

Namine was, to be transparent, touched by his words. She could've sworn she could feel her heart quite literally jump in glee.

"Uh, you doing okay? Your face is red. Allergies?" Sora inquired, his GummiPhone out.

"Oh! Oh yeah! Allergies, haha, really annoying, huh?" Namine responded a little too loudly, causing some suspicion, but Sora didn't pay it much mind. She was going through a lot.

"This is kinda awkward," Sora said, chuckling.

"Hmm?"

"Um, what's your name?" He asked. "Sorry if you already said, and I forgot!"

Oh, he was right. She never did tell him her name. How did that slip through the cracks?

"Namine."

Sora tilted his head.

"Namine? Uh, how do you spell that?"

She giggled. "Just give me your phone. I'll give you my information."

Sora obliged, and she inputted herself into his contacts list.

"Ah, I see. That's a cool name; never seen one close to it before." Sora grinned infectiously.

"Thanks," she smiled. "And your number?"

Sora provided his information.

"Sora?"

Sora and Namine turned to see two girls before them.

His eyes widened. That's right. He was eating out with them. Oh boy.

"Hey Kairi, Xion, what's up?" Sora asked, his eyes darting all over the place.

"What exactly is going on here, Sora?" Kairi's said, awfully calmly.

Uh oh! Uh oh! Red alert! Red alert! I haven't seen Kairi this mad in a loooong time, Sora thought, a bead of sweat dripping down his brow.

"Yeah, Sora. It's awfully rude of you to forget us and go to another girl," Xion said, pouting.

She was playing it up for dramatic effect. She doubted Sora was the type of guy to pick up girls like that. He was too dense if those conversations between him and Kairi at the table were anything to go by. Something else must've happened is her guess.

"Yes, Sora," Namine stared at him herself, and while her expression was neutral, Sora could sense some sort of…animosity behind it. "What exactly isgoing on here?"

To be frank, none of the girls knew how to respond further. After that enlightening speech from Sora, Namine doubted he was simply trying to seduce her. But if that wasn't the case, why were two girls who looked to be around their age looking for him here? They were beauties too; she had to admit. She supposed they could be his sisters? Before she could continue pondering, Sora finally took action.

"T-These two are my friends! I was eating lunch with them!" Sora stood up quickly, placing his palm in front of Xion and Kairi. "Namine, meet Xion and Kairi!"

"Namine?" Kairi and Xion said simultaneously.

"Um, yes. Nice to meet you. Sora here was just…helping me with something urgent. I owe him," Namine carefully replied. If she weren't careful, she would cause an unnecessary misunderstanding.

"Urgent? What was wrong?" Kairi asked.

Sora was about to jump in, but Namine retorted before he could do so.

"None of your business," She said stoically.

Kairi was silent.

Wait, I did NOT mean to be that insensitive, Namine thought. I guess my tone when talking to DiZ slipped out. Oh no…

"Wait, I-I didn't mean-"

"Oh? Is that so?" Kairi said.

If Sora wasn't scared before, then he sure was now. His gaze now fixated on Kairi, whose expression was indeterminable, impossible to read. It almost reminded him of Aqua when she caught Riku sneaking out of the training grounds to hang out with him. Except, well, this instance felt far scarier.

"If it's 'none my business,' then it should be fine if Sora leaves you alone and comes back with us, right? Don't want to waste any more of your time, of course," Kairi stated, grabbing Sora's arm.

"Wait, Kai-" Sora started before Xion overtook him.

"Kairi!" Xion exclaimed. Though the café was still bustling with activity, Sora could've sworn all went silent for the briefest of moments.

"Calm down. What's up with you?" Xion asked, stepping between the other two girls. "Relax. And, you Namine. You might not have intended it, but you have to rein in that attitude of yours, too."

Sora was in awe. Wow, she just told them like it is!

"Take a deep breath and reintroduce yourselves," Xion said, stepping out of their line of sight.

Namine and Kairi stared at each other for a few seconds before they followed Xion's advice and breathed deeply.

"I-I'm sorry for talking to you that way," Namine stood up and bowed slightly. "It was unbecoming of me. I apologize."

Kairi, for all intents and purposes, was back to her old self. Seeing Namine apologize so sincerely caught her off guard.

"O-O-O-Oh! Uh, um! I-I'm at fault too! I shouldn't have blown up at you like that! Sorry! You don't have to bow! Raise your head!"

As the two exchanged pleasantries and over-apologized, Sora swung over to Xion.

"I don't know what to say. Thank you so much for defusing that."

"It was no problem, really. My two best friends tend to argue out of nowhere sometimes, too. So someone has to calm them down, right?" Xion said.

"However, you're not out of the woods yet, mister," Xion added in a humored tone.

"Uh-"

"You're going to have to explain why you never came back to us after leaving for the bathroom. That was just a teensy bit rude, don't you think?"

Sora sighed. She was right.

"Yeah. You're right. I didn't intend to ditch you guys like that, promise."

Xion nodded.

"Thing is, Namine was in trouble with…a problem I don't think I'm at liberty to say. I couldn't just leave her alone."

"…You really are something else, Sora," Xion said after a brief silence.

"W-What do you mean?"

"You're genuinely kind. I've never met someone like you before. Helping out a random stranger isn't something just anyone does. Most would ignore them and mind their own business."

Xion's tone was tenderhearted, but it quickly morphed into one of curiosity.

"Are you sure you don't wield a Keyblade, Sora?"

Sora raised an eyebrow at her question.

"I mean, it is dependent on luck first and foremost, and there's obviously no guarantee, but every Keyblade wielder has to have a strong heart. And Kairi and your other best friend are wielders, aren't they? I just find it a bit odd how no Keyblade has ever picked you yet. Guess it could simply be a case of bad luck…."

"I believe you're thinking too highly of me, Xion."

She slightly tilted her head at his assertion.

"If anything, Kairi and Riku are the ones who have truly strong hearts. Mine is worthless."

Xion's brows furrowed at that statement; she was concerned. Yet before she could inquire further, Kairi and Namine approached, seeming to have concluded their introductions.

"Sorry about that guys, we're good now!" Kairi said. Her expression was altogether different from how it was a few moments ago, now calm and collected.

"Yes, we are," Namine added. "I told her how Sora helped me overcome an… artist block I was facing and gave me inspiration."

"You're an artist, Namine?" Xion asked.

"Yes, majoring in Art Design, in fact," She clarified.

"Oh wow, that's so cool!" Xion's eyes lit up. "I've always wanted to be an artist growing up! Don't have the talent for it, though, haha…."

"Nonsense! Everyone can draw. It just takes practice," Namine claimed.

Sora's and Kairi's GummiPhones suddenly beeped. Glancing at each other, they checked and saw a group text from none other than Riku.

"Hey guys, how's your exploration of Superbia going? I met up with my other friends, and we were thinking of meeting up with you before the welcoming ceremony began to, you know, introduce each other. Sound good?"

"So, Riku, our mutual best friend," Kairi pointed to Sora, "wants us to meet up with him and his friends before the welcoming ceremony starts. You two can come with us if you want! That is if you aren't busy or anything."

Namine and Xion contemplated for a moment before nodding in acceptance.

"Sure, interested in meeting this friend of yours you talk so fondly of," Xion admitted.

"Might as well. I have nothing better to do," Namine said. Truthfully, part of her felt glad to be included, even if it was with people she had just met. They seemed kind enough.

"Then let's go! Well, after we pay our bills," Sora exclaimed excitedly. "Riku says he wants us to meet up at someplace called 'Cocoon's Clams.' Right next to the Central Auditorium."

Soon afterward, the four occupants paid for their meals and made their way to Cocoon's Clams, using Kairi's map as a guide.

Xion's GummiPhone beeped, and when she checked it, she saw Roxas and Lea asking her to meet up at this same café.

Huh, what an interesting coincidence, she giggled to herself.

{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}

Cocoon's Clams was an exquisite joint as if the 'Clams' part of the name wasn't already telling enough. It was usually a place where the rich kids and staff would hang out. Still, with it being the first day and all, none of those social norms were set in place quite yet.

Riku, Ephemer, Lea, Isa, Skuld, and Brain were standing on the café's side, awaiting the arrivals of the numerous people they contacted.

Skuld and Brain were close friends of Ephemer and were second-years who were majored in the Keyblade Arts like him.

Skuld was the outgoing, curious type, drawn by any little thing that even minutely grabbed her attention. Brain, on the other hand, was dutiful and studious. While he enjoyed Skuld's and Ephemer's company, he was always the business first sort of guy.

Isa was one of Lea's close friends. He was stern and had no trouble teasing his Lea for a quick joke. In addition to being usually outspoken, he majored in Astronomy, a stark contrast from Lea's Chakram major. Yes, you read that right; there is a Chakram major, though it's a relatively niche field, only housing a few dozen students at most.

"So you contacted your friends too, Lea?" Ephemer asked.

"Yup, and get this," He chuckled. "Turns out Roxas contacted others for this meet-up as well."

"This is going to be quite the crowd then," Brain remarked, lightly adjusting his hat. "Not sure if I'm up for it, to be quite frank."

"Oh, don't be like that, Brain!" Skuld pouted. "You need to break out of your shell! And avoiding people you don't know all the time isn't going to help!"

"As nervous as I am about this whole thing, Skuld has a point, Brain," Ephemer chimed in. "Nothing good ever comes out of stagnation."

"Excuse me? I don't believe I even remember the last time I've seen you nervous," Brain claimed.

"What? Of course I get nervous!"

"I don't know Ephemer," Riku turned. "You've always got your cool face on when you're on campus. Don't think I've seen you panic over anything from here." When your mind isn't on Scala, anyway.

"Like you're one to talk, Riku," Lea jumped in. "Why do you think the chicks always fall for you? You always exude that Chad-aura."

"Please, Lea," Isa sighed. "Don't embarrass yourself. No one ever says 'Chad' in an unironic context."

"What are you talking about?! Of course they do!" Lea challenged. "Did you hear those first-years spout it earlier?"

"I'm pretty sure they were just joking around, Lea," Riku answered for him. "But, hey, be my guest! You can be the one who makes it a real, unironic term! Petition your dear Instructor Quistis to make it an encouraging word used throughout campus!"

"Riku," Lea growled. "You-"

"Lea!"

The six-person group directed their attention to four figures running in their direction.

"Roxas! And, wait, what?! Hayner, Pence, and Olette?! Why the hell are you three here?!" Lea yelled.

Roxas? Riku thought. Why does he look identical to Ventus? I'd ask, but uh, that'd probably be rude.

"Yo Lea! Nice to see you too!' Hayner clapped one of Lea's outstretched palms, with Roxas clapping the other.

"Well, we got in!" Olette said happily. "Last-minute inclusions, but still in! We still can't believe it!"

"Yup, it's pretty wild!" Pence kept nodding fervently. "Our parents were so happy by the news that they started tearing up! We did too!"

"Woah guys, that's…wow," Lea was at a loss for words. "Congrats, seriously. Getting into Superbia's no joke."

"And where're my congratulations, Lea?" Roxas asked jokingly.

"Oh, shut it you!" Lea grinned back.

The newly arrived group quickly settled in, standing by the already present individuals and engaging in light conversation.

"Huh, I thought Xion would be here by now," Roxas brought up, glancing at the extensive group.

"Yeah, same here," Lea asked. "I'll shoot her another text, see what's up."

"In the meantime, how about we introduce ourselves?" Skuld suggested. "So many new faces!

"Not yet," Riku raised his hand. "Two of my friends are supposed to be coming here soon."

"Oh, wow, even more people?" Hayner whistled. "We're already starting a clique!"

"I wouldn't go that far," Roxas chuckled. "Still, it's pretty cool to be meeting so many new people on day one."

"Yeah, we have to thank the power of hearts' connections and all that. That's what all you Keyblade wielders say, right?" Lea jokingly mocked.

"You're admittedly not too far off the mark," Ephemer acknowledged. "Still, we're far cooler about it."

"Cool? Come on now. You can't be serious. That sort of talk's cringe as hell," Lea retorted.

A singular snort escaped from Isa.

"Lea. Please. Don't ever say 'cringe' again for the love of god," Riku started laughing up a storm, with the rest of the crew joining in.

"W-What? I see that word online all the time! Do kids not say that?" Lea asked incredulously.

"Lea, bro," Hayner planted an arm on his shoulder. "You're sounding like an old man."

"Yeah, maybe he's the cringe one," Isa unexpectedly added, amplifying the laughter tenfold.

"Hahaha, yeah, yeah, laugh it up," Lea rolled his eyes.

As the group continued to howl at each other's antics, a voice from afar eventually caught their attention.

"Heyyy Riku!" Sora yelled.

"Sora! Kairi!" Riku smiled, gazing at the approaching figures. "Wait…"

"Xion?!" Lea and Roxas let out simultaneously.

"Who's the blonde girl? She's beautiful," Skuld was transfixed. "Well, I-I mean they're all beautiful! I'm just saying-"

"We get it, Skuld," Brain shushed her.

Sora, Kairi, Xion, and Namine all finally arrived. Except for Kairi and Xion, they seemed a bit out of breath.

"Sorry we're so late," Kairi walked closer to the group. "We were farther than expected."

There was an awkward silence with these new arrivals. Finally, Riku coughed, trying to clear the air.

Sora and Kairi eyed Roxas with suspicion, who noted their looks but didn't quite know how to address them.

"So, Sora, I had no idea you worked so fast," Riku grinned slyly.

"Uh, what?" Sora asked, head tilting slightly.

"Come on, man!" Lea wrapped his arm around Sora's head. "He means how you brought three girls with you! For such an innocent-looking face, you sure work hard!"

"I know you're joking, Lea, but that's not what's going on here," Xion sighed. "I coincidentally met Sora and Kairi earlier today, and we became friends. Then, we met Namine," Xion gestured toward the blonde, "in a café who also became friends with us, and yeah."

"Sounds like an eventful day," Roxas smiled.

"Yeah," Xion nodded. "You can say that."

"So, we got around 30 minutes till we gotta get lined up for the welcoming ceremony," Pence checked his Gummi Phone. "We should all introduce ourselves before time catches up with us."

"Sounds good!" Lea started. "I'm Lea! Prideful pyromaniac and Chakram Major!"

"Chakram…?" Sora questioned.

"Yeah, it's a niche weapon major, but hey, it's a damn cool weapon!"

The roll-call continued.

"I'm Ephemer. Majoring in the Keyblade Arts."

"Oh, hey cool, another Keyblade user," Kairi acknowledged.

"I'm Brain, also majoring in the Keyblade Arts."

"Oh, wow, another one," Xion noted.

"Hey there! I'm Skuld! I'm also a Keyblade Arts Major!"

"There sure are a bunch of Keyblade users here, huh?" Hayner said.

"I'm Olette! I'm majoring in the Culinary Arts!"

Sora's ears perked up at that reveal.

"I'm Hayner! Majoring in Software Engineering."

"Pence here. Also majoring in Software Engineering."

"Isa. Astronomy major."

"I'm Roxas. Keyblade Arts Major."

"Riku. Keyblade Arts Major."

"Hey, I'm Xion. I'm also one of the many Keyblade Arts Majors here."

"Hello, I'm Kairi. I'm yet another Keyblade Arts Major."

"Namine. Majoring in Art Design."

There was a lull.

"Uh, Sora, your turn," Riku chuckled.

"R-Right! Haha," Sora grinned. There are tons of Keyblade wielders here. Wow.

"I'm Sora! Culinary Arts Major!"

"And that should be everyone," Riku noted. "Didn't realize it until now, but there are a LOT of us."

"You're telling me," Ephemer said. "14 even. Pretty hectic start to the day, huh?"

The group got to chatting amongst themselves, with some even exchanging contact information. They were taking advantage of what little time they had left before the welcoming ceremony.

"Hey, Riku," Kairi whispered, dragging Sora along with her.

"Who is that Roxas guy? He looks just like Ven!"

"I wish I knew, Kairi," Riku admitted.

"We sure he isn't Ven in disguise?"

"Sora, please," Riku rolled his eyes. "Sure, they look similar, but Roxas' voice is far deeper. I doubt Ven could make that work.

"Yeah, good point," Sora agreed.

"Well, I think it's best of us to ask him," Kairi suggested. "It's going to constantly be on our minds if we don-"

"Sora! Riku! Kairi! Is that you?!"

A familiar voice shook the three from their conversation, also grabbing the attention of the rest of the group.

"Ven?!" Sora, Kairi, and Riku shouted.

"Roxas?!" Xion and Lea called.

"Wait, no, that's not me!" Roxas pointed to himself. "I'M me! No one else!"

"Wait, who is that?!" Ven pointed to Roxas.

"Who are you?!" Roxas pointed to Ven.

"Oh, brother," Isa sighed.

"Are you two not related?" Namine inquired.

"No!" Ventus and Roxas exclaimed.

"Alright, alright. I'll admit, the two of you certainly look…identical," Skuld said. "But, Ven was it? You should at least introduce yourself."

"Right, right. Sorry," Ventus coughed. "I'm Ventus, and uh, I'm a Keyblade wielder-"

"As if the similarities don't end," Lea interrupted.

"And I'm a first-year student? Maybe? I hope? I'll know for sure, um, eventually…."

"Ven," Sora shook his head. "Why are you at Superbia High? What about Aqua, Terra, and Master Eraqus?"

"So, there's a really funny story there, Sora!" Ventus laughed nervously. "You see, I stowed away on a Gummi Ship to get here!"

"…YOU WHAT?!" Every member of the group screamed out at once.

"But wait! It's fine! It's fine! I promise!"

"In what world is that fine?" Kairi asked, her tone becoming scarily grave. "Do you have ANY idea how much trouble you're in right now?!"

Lea whistled. "Whew boy, fellow redhead there sure is feisty."

"Wait, wait! It sounds bad but let me explain!" Ventus pleaded.

Riku sighed. "Let him do at least that much, Kairi. He deserves that much before Aqua…does whatever godforsaken thing she'll do to him."

Ventus shuddered.

"So, I successfully stowed away, right? And then, soon after I landed, I got to explore the campus for a few minutes. Real cool place, by the way. And then, I ran into two of the Master of Master's apprentices."

"…YOU WHAT?!" Every member of the group screamed out at once.

"Yeah, crazy, right? Invi and Ava were their names. I ended up confessing what I did to them, knowing I'd be screwed eventually. They then took me to the Master of Master's Office. And uh, well, to summarize it as best as I can, he offered me an opportunity to become a fully-fledged first-year student here!"

"No way in hell," Brain spat out in shock.

"Yeah, crazy, right? Issue is there's one caveat. He said I have to call my 'caretakers' and have them approve of it…." Ventus sighed, looking despondent.

"Yeahhh, that's not going to be happening, Ven," Kairi said, crouching down and placing her arms on his shoulders. "Aqua will obviously say no, and to be blunt; I don't entirely disagree with her. You're…too young and inexperienced to be here."

"I've trained with you, Riku, Aqua, Terra, Master Eraqus, and Master Xehanort for years!" Ventus retorted.

"…Sorry, I shouldn't have said inexperienced," Kairi shook her head.

"What I mean is…." Kairi didn't know what to say here. She didn't exactly have a particularly strong reason for why Ventus shouldn't attend Superbia High. It's that something about him attending just felt…wrong.

"What she means is it would be too overwhelming for you," Riku interrupted. "You've never gone to a public school, Ven. Going from the Land of Departure to Superbia is too drastic of a jump. And you're incredibly reliant on Master Aqua, Master Terra, and Master Eraqus. In fact, you've barely even traveled to other worlds. Not that I'm one to talk, but I have the social experience to handle myself here. Sora, too."

Riku knelt down and gently moved one of Kairi's hands away, placing one of his own hands-on Ventus' shoulder.

"Be honest with me. Were you comfortable navigating the campus by yourself?"

Ventus didn't share that Ava led him around as much of the campus as she could before she had to leave to make preparations for the welcoming ceremony. But, he had to admit, Riku did have a point. If he didn't have Ava with him for most of the day, he would've probably broken down. He relied on Terra, Aqua, and Master Eraqus all the time. Maybe they did have a point. Maybe it was too soon for him to leave the nest.

Just as Ventus was about to turn over a new leaf and alter his stance, a new voice jumped into the fray.

"Ven, you know it's ultimately your choice, right?" Sora said. Riku and Kairi looked mildly concerned at his insinuation. "I honestly don't agree with Riku or Kairi here. Like, yeah, it's true that you're not exactly independent, and you haven't interacted with many people outside of the Land of Departure. But, doesn't that make this the perfectopportunity?"

"Sora!" Kairi exclaimed.

"Everyone has to start somewhere, Ven, and there's no shame in that," Sora continued, intending on addressing Kairi after he was done. "Just because Superbia is a big deal doesn't mean you should undervalue yourself. Still, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so are you really not going to even try attending because you're scared?"

Sora eventually realized what he said before adding to it. "I-I'm not calling you a coward or anything like that, obviously! I'm saying that if your heart is telling you to be here, then it's at least worth asking Aqua. Better to try than not, right? Follow your heart!"

Kairi stood up. Her gaze was fierce, and she made a quick mental note to assure Namine and Xion that she's not usually this prone to anger.

"Sora, what in the hell are you saying to him? You should know as well as I and Riku do that him going here isn't a good idea! He's too sheltered! I agree that Ven should eventually start making his own choices and start to be independent, but we shouldn't encourage wanton recklessness!"

"When should he start making his own choices then, Kairi? It's not like he's some jewel that has to be protected constantly! He's a Keyblade wielder not much younger than us. You know he can hold his own! Plus, we'll all be around to help him if he has any issues!"

"We wouldn't always be around to help him!"

"That's part of him growing! We'd just be around to help when the going gets tough! Besides, I'm not much better off. Sure I've gone to a public school, but Ven's chances shouldn't be shot because he didn't!"

In the midst of the group watching this scene play out, Roxas nudged Ephemer. He didn't know the guy, but he seemed reliable enough.

"Hey, uh, you think we should step in before this gets out of hand? Random people are starting to watch. And, if this keeps up, it might result in a fight."

Ephemer glanced at the argument a moment more before responding. "Yeah, you have a point. Riku's a close friend of theirs, though, so I trust him with how to deal with them if the situation escalates."

"Hmm, alright. Fair enough," Roxas nodded.

Speaking of, Riku was intently watching the argument play out. Sora and Kairi likely didn't realize it yet, but people were taking photos and capturing footage of their spat. If this intensity increased, he knew he should jump in. It was unlike Kairi to get this angry for this long, though. Sure, she sometimes lashed out at inane things but she'd always quickly realize she was at fault and apologize soon after. And, for the issues she wasn't in the wrong in but still showed unnecessary attitude, she would still reflect and apologize appropriately.

It was apparent to Riku and everyone else that Kairi was acquainted with that she had anger issues. Yet, it never impeded on her personal relationships. At most, it was usually a slip-up here and there, but nothing all that major. Her upbringing as a princess undoubtedly helped her control herself to an extent.

Still, it was worth asking; what was causing her to lash out this much? This was unprecedented. It was a polar difference in perspectives, yeah, but Kairi knew better than to blow up like this, especially for this long, and to Sora of all people. Sora, for all intents and purposes, was handling this reasonably well. Sure, he too raised his voice, but it was only in response to Kairi doing so.

Feeling like enough was enough, Riku finally stood up and approached the arguing duo. On the other hand, Ven constantly switched glances between Sora and Kairi and his GummiPhone, his eyebrows furrowing in sorrowful concentration.

"Okay, okay, that's enough, you two," Riku started. "Let's rela-"

SLAP

A reverberation occurred, causing a deafening silence. Everybody's eyes widened.

Kairi wasn't sure why she did that. Her mind felt like it was in a haze. Were the emotions with Namine from earlier resurfacing? Was the stress from being on campus for the first day eating away at her? Hell, was Sora staring at breasts in the Administration Office still getting to her?

She didn't know, and even though she logically knew that what she just did was wrong on all levels, she couldn't control herself. Anger got the better of her.

Kairi tightened her shaking fists, staring at the face she just slapped. Sora's mouth was agape. He looked like he wanted to say something but couldn't get the words out.

Worst of all, she could see him tearing up.

To say she felt immense guilt would be an understatement. She felt terrible. But, now, her pride was getting the better of her. Part of her desperately desired to cement her domination in this argument, prove she was right.

And she gave in to it in the worst way imaginable.

"You know what?! Where do you get off telling someone to follow their heart like you're a Keyblade wielder?"

She summoned Destiny's Embrace.

"Until you have one of these and understand how to see peoples' hearts, you have no right whether to tell someone to follow their heart like you understand them!"

Sora visibly flinched.

Riku was in shock, not entirely sure what to say. No one was.

Suddenly, voices began echoing in every student's head. It was a spell that acted as a replacement for megaphones, making it convenient for multiple people to receive messages clearly.

"Attention all students, this is Invi. Member of Superbia High's Board of Directors. The welcoming ceremony will be initiated in the Auditorium in approximately 5 minutes. Please form orderly lines outside of the building and, when you are prompted, claim the seat nearest to the front. Repeat…"

Everyone in the vicinity of Cocoon's Clams heeded the message and started to make their way to the Auditorium, still eyeing the scene of the recent argument.

Kairi stormed off to the Auditorium with Xion and Riku chasing after her. Ventus ran off as well, too scared to face anyone at the moment. The rest of the group offered Sora sympathetic looks. Still, due to needing to witness the welcoming ceremony and accounting for their lack of interactions with Sora, they collectively thought it best to talk to him afterward when they didn't have to rush anything. Ephemer even told them Sora likely needed time to process what just happened, to which they agreed.

That is, except for one person.

As Sora stood still, taking in what just transpired, with a few tears unconsciously dripping down his face, a blonde girl gently patted him on the back.

"Hey, if it helps, I think she went way, way overboard. Disturbingly so. You alright?" Namine asked.

Sora sniffled yet nodded.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Don't worry."

At those words, Namine gasped. She began to truly understand how dangerously closed off Sora was from other people. And she was worried that what just happened would cause him to repress his feelings further. His emotional state was…pitch black.

Pure, utter despair.
