Worst Last Words

The masked woman leapt through the battle lithe as a tiger, scanning her opponents carefully. She drew something from her belt - an assault gun. Taking aim, she fired.

The bullet hit her intended target in the head. His eyes widened for a brief second before he fell to the ground, dead.

She betrayed no emotion, simply leaping back into the fight with ease.

One opponent down.

The enemy ship had been prepared for them, and the pirates had been taken unawares. The enemy crew had gone onto land, forcing the pirates to do the same. The battle started immediately, bullets flying everywhere, hitting people left and right and center, knives hurling through the air, daggers impaling themselves in enemy chests…

But the battle was soon to be over. The masked woman glanced around at the bodies of those who had perished, and felt a twinge of regret as she noticed some of her own crew resting on the ground, cold and stiff.

A bullet narrowly avoided the woman, centimeters from her left ear. Her head whipped around, and she caught sight of a man trying to discreetly sneak away, holding a gun.

Smoothly, the woman sliced him apart with a knife.

Before long, bodies completely covered the ground...and none of the enemy were left standing.

"Success?" a voice rang out.

"Success," the masked woman responded. She took off her mask, knowing that only her crew could see her now, revealing straight red hair tied up in a messy bun and startlingly emerald eyes.

All around, other masked people took off their own masks. One, with raven black hair and innocent sea blue eyes, said, "How much, Lily?"

"Quite a bit," Lily said. She took out a handful of glittering jewelry. "Now, back to the ship." she ordered.

James Potter lounged on a couch carelessly, sipping a glass. "How far are we from Romania?" he called.

"We still have two and a half days left," Sirius Black replied.

"Anything else?"

"Um, yes. There's a ship following us - sources report that it's the Lily 1960, a pirate ship."

Lily.

"Prongs?" Sirius asked. "Hello? Welcome back to Earth?"

James blinked. "Sorry," he apologized. "Well, that ship's a problem. How do we deal with them?"

"They're pretty close, but not close enough to fire. How about we wait, and when they get closer we fire before they can?"

"Sounds good," James said, but he wasn't listening at all.

Lily.

Lily flopped onto the ground next to him, her red hair spread like a halo around her head.

"This is boring," she complained. "I finished all the summer homework already."

"It's still the first week of the holidays!" James said, taken aback. "You've finished all that homework already?"

"Just because you're lazy doesn't mean I am," Lily responded.

"Oh, okay - hey, Lily! Wait a second!"

But Lily had already disappeared.

"I heard there are pirates," Lily said, her green eyes glittering.

"Oh, I heard that too." James said. "What do you think about them?"

"Oh, they're bad, of course," Lily said. "But also interesting." She was about to say more, but then Euphemia Potter's voice shouted, "Lily! James! Lunch!"

"They're slowing down," Lily noted. She peered through the telescope again. "Funny."

"Do you think they're trying to lure us purposely?" Her second-in-command, Dorcas, asked.

"Perhaps," Lily replied. "Get ready for it. They'll learn why no one don't messes with us."

Lily swam for the giant red and gold boat, not once glancing behind her. Her red hair was soaked and plastered to her nape.

She finally reached the boat, and took out a key from her swimsuit. Unlocking what seemed like a window, she threw herself inside.

Good planning had ensured that Lily landed in the treasure room directly. She chuckled to herself. It was so easy - but she was a seasoned pirate, after all.

She locked the window, but not very securely so that if someone came into the treasure room, they wouldn't notice that an entrance had been used, and if they found her, she could escape quickly.

There was a narrow little path free of treasure so that people could walk. Lily strayed off the path and explored the right side of it.

She was here to see how much treasure this ship had, so if the ship wasn't worth the risk, the crew knew not to rob it.

Large treasure chests were filled to the brim with gold coins and glittering necklaces, bracelets and rings, as well as precious gems - sapphires, amethysts, diamonds.

Yes, this ship was definitely worth it.

Looking at a medium-sized jewel - an emerald, she realised - Lily felt a strange urge to reach out and take it.

Just this time, and just this one, she told herself. No harm.

Lily grabbed the emerald, and made to get out of the room when -

She froze.

Footsteps outside of the room.

Lily cursed inside her head. She quickly unlocked the window and was ready to jump out when the door opened.

What was she going to do?

She was swiftly brainstormingi ideas when a voice that she hadn't heard in a very long time said, "Lily?"

Lily looked up, and her breath caught.

James.

Oh, this was a disaster.

Once he'd seen the long, flaming red hair, James had known who it was.

When the woman glanced up, it only cemented what he already knew.

Lily.

A split second passed as Lily stared at her old flame, disbelieving.

No. It couldn't be.

As she stared at him, he stared right back, confusion in those hazel eyes she used to love so much.

But she wasn't Lily Evans, the carefree girl with beautiful emerald eyes that sparkled prettily when she was with her boyfriend, anymore. She was Lily Evans, ruthless pirate, captain of the Lily 1960.

Then, as her feet were rooted to the floor in confusion and surprise, the boat rocked crazily. Lily fell backwards and only managed to not fall by using her hands to steady herself.

"What's happening, Padfoot?" James screamed, peeking outside the door.

"Sea monster!" another voice that Lily knew well answered back. Sirius.

Those two words alone made Lily stumble back in fear. Sea monster. She'd never encountered one, and while the experience might be interesting, she was not eager to go and die right now.

She wasn't fully convinced that this wasn't a trick. James and Sirius had been known, in their secondary school, Hogwarts, as pranksters. While exclaiming that there was a sea monster rocking their ship seemed a little over-the-top, she wouldn't put it past them.

James leapt forward and gripped Lily's hand. Afraid that he was going to capture her, Lily began to struggle, trying to escape his iron grip.

"I'm not trying to do anything to you," James whispered quietly. "Not now, at least."

She didn't trust him.

But then their ship capsized.

The sea monster opened its giant mouth. A forked tongue flicked out.

Yummy! it thought as it watched the humans of the capsized boat tumble out, glorious, beautiful shrieks escaping their mouths. One, with red hair, hit the water and went under.

Quickly, the sea monster snatched her up. She was soaked, from the tips of her red hair to her bare feet, as was expected of puny humans. She looked delicious, and the monster grinned, thinking of the meal to come.

"NO YOU DON'T!"

Another tiny human, this time black-headed, fell out of the boat. The monster's head snapped over to him, because it'd never met a human who dared use that voice with it.

The human was holding a green gem, and the monster tried to snatch it out of his hand. It loved shiny things. The human quickly pulled the thing out of the monster's reach. It hissed angrily.

"FOR LILY!" The human screamed loudly, then fell.

The monster laughed.

Those were the worst last words ever.
