May was in the kitchen of the houseboat drinking hot chocolate with Uncle Donald when she asked him.
"Do you have many friends Uncle Donald?" . It was mostly just an attempt to start a conversation. And It was a question that she was legitimately curious about. She noticed that he was a family man for the most part. Most of the people he talked to regularly were family members. And there's nothing wrong with that, but every once in awhile either Aunt Della or Uncle Scrooge would bring up someone, usually either a mouse or some man dressed in green and whenever they were asked who they were they'd always respond with something like "oh they're just an old friend of Donald's. He doesn't really speak with them much anymore." And on their trip they got to visit some friends of his. Panchito and Jose and Goofy. She'd seen all the hugs and the secret handshakes and the catch ups. She knew that they'd all be coming to Donald and Daisy's wedding in a week. But She wondered about all the others. The ones he doesn't speak to anymore. Why he doesn't speak to them anymore.
" Well there's panchito,Jose, and Goofy. You've met them." He replied.
"Yeah but I meant like, old friends."
"May, they are old friends."
She looked down at the hot chocolate swirling around her Mug. "I mean the ones who you don't talk to anymore. What they were like, how you knew them. Stuff like that."
She looked up at him. His face had a sort of Melancholy gaze to it. It was as if her question had unearthed a bunch of memories. People he probably hadn't thought about for a really long time now.
"Well..." he said. "There's Lyla."
"Who's she?"
"She was a reporter I knew from my college years. She was a good fighter too. Had a strong sense of justice and an interest in history."
"What'd she look like?"
Donald blushed. "Well, she had blonde hair, she usually wore it in a bun. Wore mostly pink. Usually Trench coats and jackets and stuff but sometimes she went out in dresses that Uh... "
He looked at the girl, red in the face and sweating like he could get whenever she or June asked him and aunt Daisy asked what a "honeymoon" was. Before Daisy had answered them saying it was a special vacation that the bride and groom had after the wedding.
"Well moving on!" He said quickly. "And then there's Kay K..."
"What was she like?"
"Kind of a tough girl." He said, taking a sip of his hot chocalate. "Aloof but deep down she had a heart. At least I think she did..." he trailed off.
"Why do you say that?"
"Well she kind of... she betrayed me."
"Why?"
"Okay now on to the next one." He said, without answering the question. Maybe it was for the best since they didn't seem to end on very good terms.
"The next one is..." he paused, wearing a sad smile on his face. "Uno." He said the name softly, almost whispering it.
"Like the card game?"
He laughed a little. "Yeah like the card game."
"How did you meet him?"
Donald froze.
"W-well, He was an old coworker of mine."
"What was he like?"
"He was interested in technology. And he was very smart."
There was a pause.
"I have a question."
"Answer away."
"Did you date any of these people?"
She probably shouldn't have said that while he was still drinking because he was so shocked he spit it everywhere.
"Why do you ask that sweetie?" He said, getting up to get paper towels all while his daughter/niece/cousin had a cheeky Smile on her face.
"Oh, I was just wondering."
"Well I did have... One ex."
"Who?"
He sighed. "Her name was reginella."
"Why'd you break up?"
"It was kind of an on and off thing. We tried to stay together but things kept getting in the way." He started to wipe the hot chocolate off the table. "We tried to elope once." He added.
It was quiet for a moment before May spoke again.
"Sometimes Della brings up a mouse."
"WHAT?" Donald squawked as he looked up at her, shocked.
"Yeah, apparently he's real big in Hollywood. You know him?"
She could tell that He hadn't been expecting to hear anything about the mouse in years, so She wasn't sure if he would answer the question. But he did it anyway.
"I had him as my roommate in college." He said, May noticed there was bitterness in his tone. "I knew him a lot longer than that though. Since middle school at least. For a long time it was just him, me, and Goofy."
"What was his name?"
"Mickey" Donald said. And there was the melancholic look again. The look you see when a person is remembering something that should've been happy in a way that just feels sad or depressing. Like they've lost something. She's seen that whenever Uncle Scrooge talks about his maybe/maybe not girlfriend when they were younger.
"Uncle Donald, if you could invite any of your old friends to your wedding, who would you invite?"
He thought for a bit before answering.
"Lyla, probably."
May smiled. She got out from her seat to go put her mug in the dishwasher before going to bed. "What brought this on?" Donald asked.
"I was just wondering." She shrugged. " I mean you raised the boys for a decade before their mom came back so I guess you lose contact with a lot of people."
"Yeah. Yeah I guess you do." He said quietly.
"Well I'll be off to bed." She said leaving to go to the small room she shared with June. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight Mayflower."
When the door closed Donald sank down on the sofa.
He really hasn't done a good job staying in touch with a lot of a lot of people has he? All the people he'd met on all his own adventures. The people he knew from being Double Duck and the Duck Avenger, all the adventures that no one would ever know except for himself and the people who came along for the ride.
All it took was one question asked from one of his soon to be adopted daughters for it all to come back in a rush. Like it all happened just yesterday.
Donald sent two emails the next morning.
The first was received by a reporter dressed in pink with her blonde hair in a bun.
The second was received by a mouse in his trailer, having just gotten back from a long day of filming.
Neither was aware that other had gotten one.
Both of the emails read:
You are cordially invited to the wedding of Donald an Daisy Duck on November 10 at six o clock at McDuck manor in Duckburg, Calisota.
I might make this a full story if anyone's interested. But for now, have Donald talking about old friends with May. I'm gonna try and get some of the other stories I have going on done but intrusive thoughts and anxiety make that really hard so if this does end up becoming a full story please be patient with me. Hope you guys all liked it! Most of the characters I mentioned come from Italian comics like Paperink new adventures and double duck (that I haven't even read yet because I can't find any sites with the full run but I really want to read them so if anyone has any recommendations thank you).
See you!
