Chapter 1

:

The Pickles family RV was driving up to the national park entrance that late afternoon. It had been Stu's plan for a last summer vacation before the park had to close.

Tommy Pickles and his younger brother Dil were seated in back with their grandpa, Lou Pickles. With them, along for the ride, was their dog Spike.

Outside, hitched to the trailer and covered in a canvas, was Stu's latest invention; The Auto Camper 400. It was field tested in the backyard at the Pickles house a few days ago, and Stu was sure that it was ready. To test it out in the field he had arranged for the family to go camping for the weekend.

A few minutes later they had arrived at their designated spot.

Their campsite was located on a rise that overlooked the rest of the campgrounds. There were only a few campers and families around, and no other kids for Tommy play with that were his age.

Clad only in a blue T-shirt and a diaper, the 1-year old looked out the window of the RV and wished that his best friend Chuckie Finster were here. He even wanted the twins, Phil and Lil, to have joined him.

Spike was napping in a corner of the RV to keep a watch on the babies, and so he was no fun. Dil had just gone down for his nap, and Grandpa Lou was outside on a lawn chair. Typically, he too had fallen asleep, his snores audible from outside the RV.

Stu and Didi had been busy setting up the Auto Camper 400. The silly invention was supposed to automatically setup a large tent. According to Stu it had all the conveniences of home in one room, complete with working power. So far the tent looked any but. It looked like a lopsided, deflated whoopee cushion with poles sticking out of it.

Didi shook her head like she wanted to give up. "Oh Stu," she said. "Maybe we should just call it a day. This thing will never be finished before tonight."

But Stu wasn't going to be discouraged. "Didi, the RV isn't very cozy when it comes to space." he grunted, putting in another pole into the ground. "But with this, and a little luck, we'll have more space."

Didi rolled her eyes. "I just don't see why we can't all sleep in the camper, Stu."

"Pop is constantly snoring, Deed," Stu said. "And the fold-out bed doesn't have enough leg room. But the Camper 400 will give us all the space we need."

A few minutes, and an hour later, the Camper 400 was done. The thing looked like a large, 8-person Klondike tent then anything special. But Stu had added a few features including a mini alarm system that would go off if any of the local wildlife got too close. There was even a crib for Tommy to sleep in.

By evening the Pickles family was gathered around a comfortable campfire. Tommy was roasting marshmallows on a stick, with the help of Grandpa Lou of course, and Stu and Didi were huddled together with a blanket draped over them. Spike, who was leashed to the RV, had dozed off after a good and hearty meal of kibbles. All in all, it had been a good day in the natural park.

Bedtime couldn't have come any sooner for Tommy as he slept in his crib. The stars were twinkling, the crickets were chirping, and not a creature in the woods was stirring.

All except one.

Tommy was awoken late that night by the sound of something howling in the distance. And not just any howl either. It was the howl of a wolf. Tommy shivered under his blanket.

In his crib, inside of a tent with his mommy and daddy, he felt safe. But when that howl reached his ears he knew that sleep was not possible.

Memories came back from the time he, his brother, and his friends were lost in the woods. That had not been fun at all. They were chased around by monkeys, almost went over a waterfall in the Reptar Wagon, and had almost got eaten by a wolf.

Tommy wondered if it was the same wolf as before. Nah! It wasn't possible. He knew that if it hadn't been for Spike, the wolf would eaten him and his friends. It was gone.

Tommy closed his eyes and went right back to sleep. He smiled, reassuring himself that it was not the same wolf as before. It had washed away down the river when it fell off the bridge. It was long gone.

Or was it?
